The manual comes with 4.30 gears vs 3.58 in the autos. That may make up for the minimal hp/tq decrease. The manual also has a heavy flywheel for off-roading/towing so max rpm is limited.

People forget and are bewildered by numbers. It is a truck so being able to actually use the torque (IE: staying in a slightly higher gear and using some turbo boost) you actually get economy and hauling power up hills loaded etc. The auto simply detects load and keeps kicking down until higher RPMs and load reduction are achieved and then the engine is out of its torque band and into the HP ranges. Why I ALWAYS bought Cummins Dodge manuals.
Funny after years of making small work trucks with regular cabs the one ton model they ehere all pretty much manuals and the stock bed was 6 feet the one ton was a 7 footer they even had flat beds with dual rear wheels and 6 cylender engines all vinyl interior just wash it out every now and then i had a gmç full size but working in the city it was like parking a car.
I’m not entirely sure how the 4th gens are set up but I know on the 3rd gens the manuals are equipped with 4.30 differentials while the autos are stuck with 3.93 (except the 4cyl auto they also get 4.30s). This is greatly beneficial to turning larger tires and/or low speed crawling offroad. I’m hoping they gave the same benefit to the 4th gen manuals which would provide all the more reason to take the better transmission over the auto!
