I had two trd offroads. Finally bought a sr5. Never used the locker or terrain select. 2 blizzards, a flood, and plenty of mud. Still haven't been stuck.
I find that one benefit of a sport over the off-road is if you ever plan on installing a rear locker later on. The aftermarket options are better than the stock off-road. And if you upgrade to an air-locker on the off-road, you’ll be stuck with an indicator light on your dash.
Because the truck thinks the e-locker is broken if you put in an air-locker. Because there is no e-locker. At least that’s what I’m told. I dunno, I have a sport. Also a benefit of something like an ARB air-locker is that it can be engaged immediately without having to move the truck for the gears to engage. The downside of the stock off-road e-locker is you gotta move for the gears to engage. So if you’re running the stock e-locker and get stuck in one spot before engaging the locker then you might already be too late.
@@nr9464 this is false. Also, in most cases if you have half a brain you should know immediately when to engage the e locker. Also even if the locker doesn't engage you can activate crawl control.
I agree with most of the points about the sport. The color matched fenders look amazing, and the hood scoop I think looks better and more stylish than the regular hood. All this on a truck that costs 1,300 less than the off-road. Definitely a viable option.
I have the 2021 TRD Sport 4x4 w/ premium packages like yours. You can solve the front camera issue with the Trail Grid Pro anytime front camera upgrade. It is fabulous for parking, off road and garage entry. Make sure you buy the presoldered option that will save you time and grief. It is about $240 with that option. I love my 2023 Dual Cab, automatic, short bed Taco Sport! I got it 4 months ago in Lunar Rock with everything on it...all the cameras/tech/Sound/leather seats and sunroof/fancy headlights. I've already installed what it didn't have...Predator Steps and mudguards...all bolt (OEM) on with no drilling and perfect fit (took an hour) and I have the OEM remote tailgate lock sitting, waiting for me to decide if I want my tailgate lock cycling every time I enter the truck. I bought the colorful PRO all weather mats (perfect fit on the Sport) and the OEM cushioned bed mat. Not crazy about the black interior you get with the seats...more detail cleaning required. I'm getting used to the lack of view with the scoop blocking a lot of the clearance view...I'm no longer misjudging my parking space clearance in front by 6 feet! The only downside is that it seems to have a lot of interior "gassing" off the new materials inside the cab...gotta clean the interior of ALL the windows at least once per week...Ugh! Love the 17" wheels too...that only the Sport has.
I just bought a 17 TRD Sport. So far it's been a great truck. I haven't had a chance to off road yet but my off road days are gone. I had a Colorado Z71 for 12 years till I wrecked it. Very off road capable. So far this truck has equaled the Colorado and bettered it in power. Can't wait for snow to give it a full test.
@@ModernDayViking, the sport is perfect. That way you can regear and put in your air compressor and ARB lockers in at the same time. Factory E locker is garbage, and only runs in 4L. ARB lockers can run at highway speed. You save money in the long run. Cameras? Lol. My 2013 sport has gone places that honestly shocked me. My advice is to plan for 35”x12.5” KO2 and plan accordingly. I usually just lock my rear in 4wd and haul ass through the desert. It’s ridiculous. I only Lock the front for insane climbing/crawling.

So as of March 23rd 2023 I put a deposit and my local dealer is searching for a Toyota Tacoma TRD sport access cab Barcelona red four-wheel drive. Not easy to find. You need the AnyTime camera!! I love mine for seeing my dumb dog plus it helps in parking lots, so you know you're in the spot and not taken up two. Mines a offroad. Another good point both camera's can be used while driving to check you're load on your trailer.
I have a 2020 TRD Sport manual transmission in cement grey. I was considering an Off Road but the Sport just looked so much better. I just bought it after leasing it for 3 yrs and the truck is still worth the original sticker price.
yeah, Sport here too. The Hood Scoop I could have done without. Manual with a six foot bed 4x4 were my conditions. If Toyota could have given me the locking dif and the cameras with that I would have taken it. But, have been 4 wheelin it without and am fine. I like the color matching fender guards too,
One thing to keep in mind, if you live in an environment that has lots of snowfall, like Alberta Canada, the locking differential will become much more necessary. I’ve only had my TRD PRO for a month or so and I’ve already had to use my locking diff
I grew up in South east MI and never needed a locker to get through the snow. It's nice, but it's' not necessary. Decent AT's will get you almost anywhere you need to go.
Lol my elocker doesn’t work on my trd but 4wd is all I need even in deep snow. If you have traction problems you should probably invest in better tires
@@skoparweaver7692 better offroad orientated tires will affect the gas mileage I achieve with my truck driving it on a daily basis. The whole point of the TRD Pro is that it offers a great offroad package from the factory without having to upgrade anything. It doesnt matter how good your tires are, if you are in 4 feet of snow out in the boonies, you are going to want a locking differential.
I agree with you 100% I just didn’t need the things like locking rear dif and TRD pro suspension and all that. I got a 2023 TRD sport 6 speed manual in Barcelona read! I love the painted match fenders and hood scoop and it’s 99.9% as off-road worthy is a TRD off-road IMHO! totally jealous of your voodoo blue by the way that would’ve been my first choice if they offered it still!!👍😁🤘
While I agree a lot of guys do not need it, the locking diff, a trac, crawl control etc, all for the same price as a sport, make it a no brainer imo to get the offroad. Also the sport is more like 50 percent as capable, any actual four wheeling and it will be blown out of the water by the offroad or pro.
I’ve had my 2014 FJ for five years and do my fair share of Midwest off roading and have yet to use my ATRAC or rear locker. Nice to know they are there though if needed.
The sport is the best looking of the two. Everying paint matched instead of the black plastic fenders that will fade in time which will look like crap and the hood scoop. The gimmicky MTS isn't anything special from the off road I have. Also you can get the front and 360 cameras on the sport it's just an option advanced technology package comes with it. You made a good choice on your truck. Now will see if it's worth it to upgrade to the new 2024s
I have a 2017 Toyota Tacoma TRD 4x4 Sport and mine has an Automatic Limited Slip Differential in the rear. It's not a true locker, but it's all I've ever needed. To turn it on, I just pust the traction control button 1 time quick. Edit: You should have this too. My friend has a 2019 tacoma sr5 and his has it. So I'd be willing to bet that you have it too. Unless there's a difference between auto & manual transmission.
You can add the front and mirror cameras and you will be able to turn them on anytime. The Off Road has Premium package with the Softex seats too and LED light package.
I see people talking about the locking differential, I got a 2007 Tacoma SR5 four-wheel drive. I don't know if it has locking differential or not but if I have to climb a hill I use four-wheel drive and I've never gotten stuck. And I live in the Northeast with plenty of snow
My 4Runner sr5 premium doesn’t have a locking diff. Who cares? I haven’t even put it into 4WD even in snow. It’s the same as people saying FWD doesn’t drive in snow. Take any GTI or Acura and you are fine… no issues. This is the same crap. Unless you off-road non stop it’s useless Overall good video and makes sense to me at least.
I’ve got a 2023 Off-Road in Barcelona Red... with an automatic. I chose it over a Sport with a manual because I preferred the black fenders… and cuz I’m dumb. I’m currently waiting on a Sport with a manual due to issues with the automatic transmission. Totally willing to trade black fenders for a manual!
I took delivery of a 2023 TRD Sport double cab six foot bed three weeks ago. Have dedicated snow tires on it and it still slips. Overall still a great truck though.
That sucks that they done come with that feature I have a 2017 TRD Sport when I was looking I was going to get a 2023 that was messing with the 2024s because of the motor and I found it didn’t have any 2023s neither dealership where it’s family that works there so I wanna get hooked up but they’re one of the dealerships that sells a lot of trucks no they didn’t have anything when I went there for 2014 I mean 2024 nothing in it four-cylinder small radio just basic model so I knew I had to get on line find something because I heard that a lot of people are buying the six cylinders 2016 through 2023 so I found two one was a Trd off-road and the other was the Trd sport and was lifted and I did not know what I was looking at it on mine but when I got there I noticed it was raised up and head all-terrain tires 265 70R17 and the guys around it mess I think he drove it back-and-forth to work that was it because this truck was immaculate and I have a 17 inch TRD rims also send Toyota I forget what they’re called when you open the door the little strip that’s there to protect the paint in the glove box in the sun and column dividers I just bought some fall like last week but I’m gonna buy light bar and have them put on both at the same time i’m going to get a bumper I like the one where it’s down at the bottom pretty much it’s a little bit larger than the bottom but it has a hole for the winch and I can put some light bars on the bumper I found two I really like I definitely want to get mine tuned 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
I like your videos your down to earth and bring out good points , im choosing between get a 2023 at the end of this year or getting a 24 when they come out pros and cons to both im leaning towards the 24 if I can afford it , if I do i will try to go for a trd pro in white I also saw a Terra color in another video looks real nice , if you were going to buy your first Tacoma this year would u go for the 23 or 24?
I’m currently waiting on a 23 that I put a deposit down on. Main reason is I would trust the v6 naturally aspirated over a 4 banger turbo down the road reliability wise.
I never understood why people bought the sport knowing they will go off road. The bilstein suspension on the offroad is miles ahead of what comes in the sport
I bought a sport. I don't off road. Went from a 2020 SR AccCab to a 2023 TRD sport 4dr. First & last time I went 4 wheeling I got stuck. I wasn't impressed. That was almost 40 years ago. I've owned a lot of 4×4's since then too.. I do like watching 4wheeling & it looks like fun. Enjoy your OR....Edit. I'm also installing 4 Bilsteins as well with TRD 16inch wheels (vs 17in). With 1 inch lift in front. No lift in rear
I have a 2019 Sport 4wd, which I lifted with Bilstein 6112 in the front and 5160's in the back, and its on 32 inch Wildpeaks. The most crucial thing to me was a good lift and good all terrains. I spend alot of time on desert trails and sand dunes, and most of the time I'm just in 2wd. I switch to 4wd if things get hairy but have never needed a locker. I have friends in offroad groups who need lockers because they go on difficult, rock crawling trails but I tried those kind of trails a few times and was super bored. I like the scenic faster trails. Also if there is somewhere very hairy that requires a locker, its pretty easy to just back it up, take a better line and use more momentum, or just turn back if the trail gets too crazy. Maybe one day I'll get an air locker to see what the hype is all about, but its last on my list of upgrades.
Funny thing is I got the same suspension setup on both my trucks as you, except I actually went with nitto ridge on my sport. I actually own a 2019 sport and a 2016 TRD off road and the sport is extremely capable, I've literally have had my sport balancing on two wheels and it pulls just fine over obstacles. But I will say that if you're more serious about off road you should definitely get the off road model because there's some lava rock trails here in Hawaii and if I don't lock the rear end the wheel slip destroys my tires. Not that the sport can't do it but the tires and rims take some damage from the extra wheel spin on super sharp rocks.
they don’t offer the access cab in the sport trim, I have no need for a double cab but I want the 6’ bed, I like the sport hood, breaks up the lines on the truck
If u shop cpo pricing the discounts to get any lower trim level is not at the high level of new pricing different Im not yet sold one way or the other but thank uu for the conversation I see the change in cost MORE to pro from off road
What to you think about the hesitation of the car when you accelerate? Do you have to accelerate when driving up a bridge for example? I had some issues with my 2023 Sport and would like to know if that’s common.
It's the way Toyota programed the gas pedal. They add a delay to make sure old people don't hit the gas and drive through a house. You can get a tune and improve the throttle response.
Hi, I like your truck nice blue color and features. But, make more sense if you pay a little more to upgrade for the ‘off-road’ trim. After you add the aftermarket stuff will be more hassle and expensive. Still you don’t have the ‘crawl feature’ and the other things. So, will be better off with Tacoma Off Road at the end of the day! I have a silver 2022 automatic off-road and has the hill assist.
I have a subaru wrx and plan to get a tacoma but I think I'd get the off road. The fact the sport has a hood scoop that isn't functional really bothers me since my car has one and it actually isn't just for show.
I got a 21 TRD Sport 2 months ago an the hood scoop is not in my line of view, plus I used to sit 4in higher in my 05 silverado, so it might be why. Hey my side fenders are black 🤨but my trucks color is Midnight Black lol
I ended up going for the trail, just because the truck is built out of the factory the way I like it, but I think I will get the fenders painted. The locking diff is a nice plus, but I doubt ill ever need it.
Love the black dash board and well mine is all black also I’m definitely gonna do something about the seeds I mean there’s nothing wrong with them after I get my lights then I’m gonna start working on that
Gotta an 06 TRD Sport. It has power windows and a radio. Everything else is Manual. The point of owning a Yoda is to drive using the Force. Cameras are for Padawans.
Just caught your channel! Nice Tacoma. I noticed your lower control arms are silver, so I don't believe they're stock. What kind are they? Keep the videos coming! 😃👍
@Modern Day Viking yea it's really bad to I'd the truck is pitched up. The tacomas don't have good visibility anyway cause of the small windshield but the hood scoop just makes it that much worse............especially if you trail ride your truck.
I’d say the MTS and crawl control aren’t necessary at all but they are a good thing to have especially if you let an inexperienced friend drive and have fun
I understand what you're saying about the hood scoop. It looks good but it serves no purpose and can get in the way when you're behind the wheel. Just got a '23 TRD Sport Access Cab 4x2. I don't go off road, don't need the back seat and wanted the 6ft bed. I love it. I used to work for Enterprise Rent-a-Car and drove ALL of the mid-sized trucks from Ford (Ranger), GM (Canyon and Colorado), Nissan (Frontier) and Toyota. The Tacoma is by far the best of the bunch. Finding a MT Tacoma is like finding a unicorn. Congrats on that. (I have a 6 spd manual in my '13 TSX, so I'm good with the AT in the Tacoma.). Cheers.
I have a 2018 trd sport automatic, only thing I wish it had that I don’t think makes sense is at least throw in A trac since we don’t get lockers . It’s not the same but it’s pretty close.
Very true. That's the only thing we really need, but we would need the Electronic brake master to supply abs with that constant pressure. Our vacuum master wouldn't work with an aggressive ATRAC system. I'm actually looking into how I can swap mine out for the Off road brake system, but it would be expensive so it makes sense to just swap trucks instead. Thing about that is, I don't want to swap trucks.
I had a scoop on my trd sport and switched to no hood scoop cause i can barely see especially when you’re going downhill. My only regret is trading with another person and thought we have the same color then ended up getting it repainted. But i miss the hoodscop if only i can get it back. Lol
I had two trd offroads. Finally bought a sr5. Never used the locker or terrain select. 2 blizzards, a flood, and plenty of mud. Still haven't been stuck.

i Agree i got a 22 trd sport because of the hood scoop & color matched fenders & I’m doing perfectly fine without locking diff

Also a benefit of something like an ARB air-locker is that it can be engaged immediately without having to move the truck for the gears to engage.
Nope I have it and love it. I use it all the time, it works great
Traded my scooped hood to someone who had an off-road who wanted it. Win-win
Bought my 2022 tacoma sr5 4x4 no locker or crawl control put on wild peak at3w tires it can go everywhere I need to go. Mud snow whatever.
Very nice!
Agreed! Just put my 265/70 wild peaks on and it's incredible how much of a difference decent tires alone can make.
I’m the same way I live on a very hilly road and I can’t see over the hood I hate that but I still love my truck
The hood scoop is only a problem if your short. If you want it to function? Toyota designed it to be easy to remove the block off.
I'm 5'6" and have a '18 TRD sport and love the hood scoop. No problems with seeing yet. I just look where I'm going instead of at the scoop......
My 4Runner sr5 premium doesn’t have a locking diff. Who cares? I haven’t even put it into 4WD even in snow. It’s the same as people saying FWD doesn’t drive in snow. Take any GTI or Acura and you are fine… no issues. This is the same crap.
Unless you off-road non stop it’s useless
Overall good video and makes sense to me at least.
Great job with the video. First time watching you. You come across very much genuine. New sub here
Awesome glad you liked it and welcome to the community!
Yes scoop is in the way but I like the looks.
I'm buying the sport because I want the hood scoop and the color matched body and the bigger wheels I will not be doing a lot of off-road driving
I took delivery of a 2023 TRD Sport double cab six foot bed three weeks ago. Have dedicated snow tires on it and it still slips. Overall still a great truck though.
Very nice, hope you are loving the new truck
I own a ‘21, same color 👍🏻
Very nice! About the same as mine!
I also ended up rino lining my fenders on my sport because eventually they got all scratched up.
they don’t offer the access cab in the sport trim, I have no need for a double cab but I want the 6’ bed, I like the sport hood, breaks up the lines on the truck
The access cab is pretty good looking
I have had a 06 access cab and a 08 double cab
Not true...sports are available in access cab
Not anymore, they are not
If u shop cpo pricing the discounts to get any lower trim level is not at the high level of new pricing different
Im not yet sold one way or the other but thank uu for the conversation
I see the change in cost MORE to pro from off road
Hahaha I came from the Subaru world. I don't miss it at all
Contrast is a good thing. Color matched is boring.
Not plastic though maybe some carbon fiber ones
Thank you for being real, down to earth and humble. I just bought a 2023 Tacoma Off Road and I Love it ✌️
you got a sub bro love it i have a 17 trd sport
I got a 21 TRD Sport 2 months ago an the hood scoop is not in my line of view, plus I used to sit 4in higher in my 05 silverado, so it might be why.
Hey my side fenders are black 🤨but my trucks color is Midnight Black lol
I ended up going for the trail, just because the truck is built out of the factory the way I like it, but I think I will get the fenders painted. The locking diff is a nice plus, but I doubt ill ever need it.
I like the trail edition I think it's pretty setup
Great looking truck....thanks for the video
Thank you for watching!
Love the black dash board and well mine is all black also I’m definitely gonna do something about the seeds I mean there’s nothing wrong with them after I get my lights then I’m gonna start working on that
I have a 2019 with all the extras, got it for 33.000 cash with 32.500 miles on it three mouths ago from a least turn in from private deal.
I have a 2022 Black TRD Sport 4x4, too. Question: Can you connect your Android Auto wireless instead if using a USB cable?
Think you need to buy a kit to make it wireless there's a guy with a video on top 5 interior upgrades 3rd gen
Gotta an 06 TRD Sport. It has power windows and a radio. Everything else is Manual. The point of owning a Yoda is to drive using the Force. Cameras are for Padawans.
*Why are you carrying extra Gas in the RotoPax? How far away from a gas station are you?*
Hahaha miles! I just leave it there because it's easier than taking it off. Easy storage
Great video as always ❤
Thank you!
Just caught your channel! Nice Tacoma. I noticed your lower control arms are silver, so I don't believe they're stock. What kind are they? Keep the videos coming! 😃👍
Glad you enjoyed the video!
They are actually stock, that is just a skid plate from running 4 tacos
@@ModernDayViking Thank you! Like the way you built your Tacoma! Thanks for the info and videos brother!
How you like the short bed?
I love It, prefect for what I do
Black fenders work for me, my friend
The Non rear differential lock would be a stay away for me, as an off-roader aspect
Yeah I hear that alot, I haven't hit anything yet where I wished I had one
Or just buy one…aftermarket won’t cost you as much and you can get a better one
I love my 18 sport but the hood scoop does get in the way when off-roading and trying to look at obstacles.
Right, I noticed it bad going down hills
@Modern Day Viking yea it's really bad to I'd the truck is pitched up. The tacomas don't have good visibility anyway cause of the small windshield but the hood scoop just makes it that much worse............especially if you trail ride your truck.
I have owned both and the sport is a better ride. I never used 4low, let alone locker. If locker worked in 4high I would see benefit.
Doesn’t matter if you regret buying any Tacoma. Simply list it for sale and get most of your money back 😂.
That's true!
@@ModernDayViking Then buy a GM or Ford and you will learn what true regret really is 🙂
@@anne_n_nimity SO TRUE!
@@anne_n_nimityor a Nissan lol
That’s a real nice blue
I’d say the MTS and crawl control aren’t necessary at all but they are a good thing to have especially if you let an inexperienced friend drive and have fun
On. My 2021 pro the locking diff is only available when your in 4wdL.
Yeah that's the same in all of them. It's a shame
Yeah that would have been nice. I just turn the Auto LSD on. Helps a good bit
@@ModernDayViking how do you do that?
@@joemike509 If you click the traction control button once. Auto LSD turns on. This uses the brake system to stop the wheels from free spinning.
There is already a 360 cam view. You just have to spend more $$$ for higher trim. Toyota said... "This is the way"
Right! Shame lol
Great looking truck!
You’re a good lookin’ light
Your truck looks great 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍😎😎😎😎
You convinced me too keep my trd off road hood.
Glad I could help!
I had a scoop on my trd sport and switched to no hood scoop cause i can barely see especially when you’re going downhill. My only regret is trading with another person and thought we have the same color then ended up getting it repainted. But i miss the hoodscop if only i can get it back. Lol
Did you remove the air dam in the front ? If you did , is there a brush guard under there ?
Yes I did, there is a skid plate
Lol. Got a blue crush! Waited 11 months for it! ordered it in 21' any how loved and still love it!!! Congrads!
Nice congrats on the new truck!
I even got the TRD lift package so it got different grill (TOYOTA) and rock sliders. Side note; ask for your old -new parts they replaced
Color Match fenders 💪
For me i would’ve gotten 6 speed manual sr5 4x4 and get regear and locker from ecgs. The oe lockers has problems anyway
I agree, not a big fan of how the oem locker has such limited use
Manual doesn’t start until sport model I think
Not possible, stick only available on sport, offroad, and pro.
What size are your rims and tires bro?
How much was the tent and the racks and what’s the model on that ?
Wow thanks for showing the hood from inside
glad it helped!
Voodoo blue is so much better than their current blue crush offering.
How big are your tires and how tall is your lift?
Every diff is locked if you weld it.
