Many people have asked me recently how I learned to speak Croatian (after seeing a few video clips of me speaking the language). I've been living in Croatia for 9 years already, and had to learn the language from scratch (as I don't have any Croatian roots, and had never heard the language before moving to Zagreb).
I learned Croatian in my own, unconventional way, and I've broken it down into 6 steps. It's NOT grammar-focused, I'll just give you some simple grammar beginnings, and then many helpful ways to increase your vocabulary and get you speaking.
I'll also share some tips to how I improved my written Croatian and worked on my grammar when I was ready.
I hope you find some helpful tips in here and are able to use some tricks to improve your Croatian!
Here's a link to the phrasebook I used:
    LONELY PLANET PHRASEBOOK - amzn.to/3aGAGJS
Here are a few children's books in CROATIAN!
    amzn.to/3v17BBC (Sweet Dreams, My Love)
    amzn.to/2QrlXw7 (I Love My Dad)
amzn.to/33TKMnK (Sleep Tight, Little Wolf - this one has both English & Croatian text on each page, which is helpful!)
amzn.to/3u13Nz4 (In Here, Out There - this one also has both English & Croatian text on each page)

Everyone who tries to learn our language has my respect. We Croats know that our language is hard and difficult...the grammar drives even us sometimes insane :P So we feel the pain and there is no reason to be mean to foreigners if they say something incorrect.
Everyone who learnt one or two languages knows how difficult it can be and if it is nothing similar to your native language it can be even harder. Well English is def easier than croatian but till this day there are words that are hard for me to pronounce.
Also your croatian sounds pretty amazing.
    Svaka čast :D

Wow, interesting you would say that bc we have a lot of slang. Not to mention…they, there, their , they’re. Bought, brought , buy, by, bye.

    • @Niki91-HR
      @Niki91-HR ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@teresamance8381 every language has its own slangs which is normal and sure for foreigners who dont live in those places where a certain language is the native one wont necessarily pick up the slang from the get go BUT most of us still achieve to learn the grammar properly and know how to speak the "proper" way/ standard language (idk if I can say it like that 😅).
They, there, their can be confusing in the beginning but the thing is if you have someone who teaches you the language properly from the beginning and you understand the differences it wont be a problem. Also a big plus is if you have the chance to use the language you are learning often or even every day.
I had the luck when I used to live in Germany as a kid that my english teachers were very good and had some great advice how to differentiate words that sound same or similar. One I will remember for ever. In German you would say "he, she , it das s muss mit" which basically means " he, she, it the s has to go with it". That was a great thing to remember when using he she or it to put a s at the end of the verb in the present form.
I for example picked up some american slang by watching their movies and shows and even music. With time you will pick up some stuff by watching things or interacting with people due to work for example.
At the end of the day it also depends how dedicated you are while learning a foreign language and how willing you are to learn it properly.
I have to say although I am Croatian I grew up in Germany till I was 16 and when we moved to Dalmatia, southern part of Croatia I had my problems as well since I didnt know how to speak in the dialect and certain slang but with time I learnt that as well. I did have to ask for translation to the proper language to understand what some people said to me 😅🙈
So I can understand her how she felt when she came as a complete foreigner.

I found that just speaking without caring if you made a mistake was very helpful. My friends basically said I spoke CroEnglish LOL.... Right when I started to understand 50% of the conversations my friends were having, I moved to Hungary!!! Now, I am back in Croatia and will use your technique to learn this time. Such a helpful video Sarah, thank you! Languages are my passion and I’m fluent in 5, but Croatian sure isn’t one of them! I’ve been finding it hard finding a good app to start learning so your video has been a great starting point (even though I still haven’t completely worked out memerise - they don’t have an official Croatian course). Your level of Croatian is fantastic, (especially your r’s, which I still struggle with at times after 18 years of speaking Spanish fluently). I like your approach of not worrying about Grammar at the start - one of my biggest mistakes in the past was not speaking to locals before I felt I was ‘perfect’ enough.

This is great, thanks for sharing. I'm hoping you'll mention the dialects in one of your videos about our language one day. I live in Croatia and some of them are barely understadable when it's real thick ^^. I also hope you would cover slang one day. I learned english when I was a kid, and I can say that my vocabulary and grammar improved significantly by reading books in english. The hardest words to learn are the one less used, like names of trees and fish IMO. Next up, I would say words that imply a multitude, like a flock of birds, a hoard of gold or a gaggle of nuns. It would also be fun if you translated some of the city, town and village names into english, all you need is a good map!

I learned English the same way (and now I'm level C1, both in written and spoken english)! this method does actually work, and - for me at least made learning much less frustrating than learning it in school for example. Currently, I'm learning Croatian, and this video reminded me how much fun it is to actually learn a language, so thank you very much again! Or puno hvala 😏😄🥰

😁 Pozdrav!

Sarah, your video is SO helpful! You speak to some really basic guidelines ("grammar in doses", etc.) but it makes sense. You seem to share a "common sense is not so common" approach, great for someone like me who tends to overcomplicate things. Just learning biti and imati in the present with the subject pronouns, and the adverbs of frequency and some simple expressions of time, can already take you a long way. Many, many thanks!

This is great system to learn any new/foreign language. My teacher in elementary school (40 years ago) used it to teach us German, and later I applied it to learn self-learn Spanish and Portuguese. Personal Pronouns, To Be, To Have...once you learn how to use these (+ learn how to read alphabet to expand the vocabulary) - you have a foundation to converse in any language. I loved your initial instuctions to your viewers not to get intimidated with imperfections in grammar. Way too many adults never learn the new language as they are affraid to make basic mistakes that other pple would consider inappropriate and stupid.
I hope my wife (Brazilian) will start following your channel and instructions about Croatian language and experience of the country from the perspective of the non-Croatian, curious person.

This is really good advice. As a native English speaker who only speaks English, I am having a very hard time with padezi. My vocabulary isn't extremely developed, and I find it so hard to just jump in and write and speak whilst making mistakes. I feel like everything I say has to be grammatically correct, and that's probably why I haven't progressed as far as I'd hope. I am starting an online Croatian course 3 days a week though, so I am very excited. I just need to learn to be okay making mistakes.

I am going to visit Croatia soon and you encouraged me to learn the basics.

Hi Sarah, I have to say that I’m really impressed with your level of Croatian! I’ve been learning Croatian for just over a year now, and I can totally relate when you say that it’s a difficult language to learn! I’m Australian (living in Australia) but I’m also Croatian through my maternal grandparents. They lived in Crikvenica, where I was also christened as a baby. I also speak Spanish and German, but despite my experiences in learning these languages, Croatian is definitely the hardest. I think your learning methods are really good, as I too use Memrise and such methods. I have weekly lessons with a native Croatian speaker using italki.com. I tend to write a lot of Croatian: usually a few paragraphs every week about something I enjoy. I find that has expanded my vocabulary quite a bit. Jedva čekam govoriti hrvatski tečno, ali znam da jezik nije jednostavan. It took me a little over 3 years to reach C1 level in Spanish, but I think it’ll take me a lot longer in Croatian!
Anyhow, apologies for my ramblings! I really just wanted to comment on how much I enjoy your channel!

Why would anyone give a thumbs down to this video? Those people are either mean or competition. Sarah, I was an exchange student in US back in 1987/88. I approve of your method. The most important thing is to expose yourself to the vocabulary. Words, many words. Verbs are the most important. Nouns are second, adjectives are at the bottom of the list. Good job! You've done a great job learning the language. One thing I would add when learning a language is once you have the basics, work to read simple texts to see how sentences are formed. It helps to increase one's vocabulary and leads you to more advanced texts. Magazines and books work great. By the way, I always describe nj as in New or News. Haven't thought of an english word for lj usage 😂. A friend of mine, whose mom is Slovenian, pronounces Ljubljana as lube-lah-nah, cracks me up.
