Maan, I already knew the rules and all, just came here to see how the hell would you explain all this in less than 5 min, somewhy I take at least 10 min to explain the basics to someone when I was introducing this sport to my friends, congrats dude
Ehm... that is the categorical difference between table tennis and ping pong. Ping pong uses bats which don't have the sponge / "rubbers" it is hard bat or sand paper. Means the game is completely different. Everyone plays with the same bat, but, is much less spin and can be a quicker game. But, dive in claiming ignorance, when your own knowledge could be spray painted onto the back of a stamp...
Watching this, I have learned the measurements mostly used in making ping pong tables. I also learned that it also has almost as similar rules as Badminton.
I've always played: Service changes every 5 serves (except tie-breaker) Even in singles the ball has to be hit from one quarter of the table (divided by the net and middle line) to the opposite quarter. The two quarters you serve the ball into alternate every point. I guess it's like 8-ball where lots of people have slight rule variations. Thanks for another great video!
Good post. Played ping pong a lot when I was young. We played to 21, you had to win by 2. You could only score on your serve. Putting spin on the serve was legal. Hitting the back edge or side edge of the opponent's side was legal. And we called it a paddle. (Not a bat.) Returning the ball on the fly was legal, and was considering a good, aggressive attack strategy. Returning the ball so that it hit the top edge of the net and having go over and hitting the opponent's side was legal. Topspin, backspin, sidespin (left or right), were all good tactics. And a really good backspin that, for lack of a better word, was a "dink." You pointed the top edge of the paddle straight at your opponent with a little downward angle, and jabbed it forward and underneath the ball to drastically slow its speed down and create a strong enough backspin so that it would almost stop dead on the other side when it hit the table. I started out using a traditional grip (like the fellas you have in the video) and then converted to the "Chinese" or "pen" grip after a few years. It allowed me to do a greater repertoire of spins. Also, in effect, there wasn't much of backhand that way. We had a lot of fun in those days playing the game.
Thanks again Peter. Sometimes the old rules are the best! I think we used to play by the same rules until the organisations modified the rules to make it more marketable for television (just like they did Badminton and Squash). Tough game to master. Being from a Chinese family, I was taught the pencil grip and only the pencil grip. But I found it horribly difficult to master so I reverted to the standard grip. Fun times.

Hi Ninh, awesome video. Although can you make a boxing video or amateur boxing video, and also a sport 'Kiiking' is very complicated and need help. Other than that keep it up.
this is really help me... thank u so much for your information... "so in double player must hit the ball alternately" its because my friend told me you can hit free the ball without alternate, even your partner doing nothing like badminton rules...
Loud and clear explanation. I play for pleasure and always prefer an all-inclusive hotel where i can play ...but my wife has the final word ...ah ah. One of them is Be life Marien in Puerto Plata , Dominican Republic.
This helped a lot. I'm just starting back up after playing as a youngster for fun. We used to play to 21, served 5 times before alternating, and made plenty of illegal serves. I feel much better knowing these rules.
Table tennis used to play to 21, but they changed it to shorten the games and make them more attractive to people watching on TVs (same with the change from cellulose balls to plastic)
Great video! However, I had a question regarding the number of sets that need to be played. I watched the 2012 Gold Medal Olympic match and the champion won after winning 4 sets and not 3. Does this differ for different types of matches?
+Andrew Szymier Generally most mens competitions is the best of 5 sets (i.e. you have to win three). The Mens Singles in the Olympics for some reason has the best of 7 sets (you have to win 4). I couldn't give you the reason why to be honest? Thanks for stopping by, be sure to share this video and subscribe :)
Actually, almost all singles matches are played till one player wins four sets. The exception would be in team events, some doubles matches, and lower level tournaments.
The Chinese will figure out a technique to dominate the game (for example spinning the paddle) the , then the olympics will change the rules to prevent Chinese from dominating (forcing everyone to use paddles with different colors on each side), but then the Chinese dominate anyways.
Ninh Ly I have a question about a rule there's a tournament at school and one of the students hit the ball with backspin it touches my side then goes back to his side. Is it OK if I hit on his side I mean the has already passed the net to his side but hasn't touched his side yet but I've seen exhibition points Zhang jike and xu Xin playing round the table 360 degree but it's still OK please reply and I'll show your reply to my teacher. Thanks in advance.
If the ball come to me lets say lob shot and my bat hit the table when i catch the ball is that a point for the opposite or when i smash with forehand or backhand ? Thnx in advance for anyone that can answer me cause i have a disquss with my friend
When you serve, if you throw the ball in the air and miss, do you lose the point or do you retake the serve? (In normal tennis you can retake it but I'm not sure if those rules apply to table tennis)
Hashtag Harry Once you let go of the ball, it's live unless the referee deems something to be wrong (like outside interference or the ball hasn't travelled 6 inches etc). It's very rare for this ever to happen as this is a fundamental part of the game.
One question i have is: If I return the ball during a rally and the ball hits the corner/edge of the table and deflects down, usually straight to the floor, is that then a point to me or to my opponent.
Just want to know the rules of deuce. In badminton, typically 20-20, the player who gets 2 more points will win the game but in 29-29, the player who achieves 30 points first will win the game. For example, A 30-29 B, player A wins the games. So is there any similar situation in table tennis?
THANK YOU SO MUCH, this video helped a lot. I was supposed to be referee for this table tennis match, and this video helped a lot. It was the most clear that actually made sense. Thanks again.
I thought that if you serve and the ball goes off the side (as opposed to the back) of the table after bouncing, you have to re-serve. Also, I thought that if you serve and the ball double-bounces on the opposite side, your opponent gets a point. Are these things true?
Ninh Ly I and everyone else with whom I've ever played have always played that if it double bounces on the receiver's side on a serve, the receiver gets a point.
Just looked it up officially: 2.7.1 The ball, having been served or returned, shall be struck so that it passes over or around the net assembly and touches the opponent's court, either directly or after touching the net assembly. 2.10.1 Unless the rally is a let, a player shall score a point 2.10.1.3 if, after he has made a service or a return, the ball touches anything other than the net assembly before being struck by his opponent; So as you can see from the laws above, if the server makes a good service (in which the ball bounces once on his side of the table, and once on his opponent's side of the table), the ball must not touch anything else other than the net assembly before being hit by his opponent. So if the ball bounces a second time on the table (or the floor, or wall etc), then the SERVER wins the point, not the receiver.
1:52 you can actually do that, it's legal. when both players are preparing for the next serve, many players just brush off their sweat at the middle of the table. its kinda unpolite for you to rub your sweat on for example your clothes or skin.
Hey ***** Yeah, it's been a long time coming. I'm not kidding when I say that it takes a long time to make one of these things. However, I'll still be making these videos for at least the next four weeks at least. Thanks for stopping by Nick, always a pleasure! :)
That was great! Just one thing to correct, there are 7 games match as well as 5 games match. Could have been even better if you’ve explained service lets as it could confuse some people.
Hello Ninh Ly! We were playing mixed double 21 points game of 5 sets. After 4 set score were 2-2 then 5th game my opponent(A and B) ask to change serves (I was serving to-A and asked to serv to B) when I were 10 and they were 7 as a international rule, is it correct ? even if this is correct if they reach the score to17 (7+10) dose serve will change again(I mean i will serve back to A).
When the game is getting intense, and each player hits the ball hard... could you “Baby” hit it? Like when your opponent is far back.. expecting a large hit, but you hit as gently as you can. Is that legal?
Quick, accurate and to the point.. I don't know why people think you need a 15 minute video to explain what this video just did in under 4 minutes.

The serves generally alternate.
Do some people play using the rules of regular tennis (e.g. with "love", "sets", and "break points")?
Not that I'm aware of no.
Thank you ! What if my ball hits the net while serving? Server is allowed a new serve? If you miss a serve are you aloowed a second one like Tennis?
Yes it's a let and the serve must be replayed.

You're not allowed to touch the table - the referee will most likely give the point to your opponent.

Just want to know the rules of deuce. In badminton, typically 20-20, the player who gets 2 more points will win the game but in 29-29, the player who achieves 30 points first will win the game. For example, A 30-29 B, player A wins the games. So is there any similar situation in table tennis?
One serve each, you must win by two points.
If the ball is clearly going off the table and i catch it after it is past the table do i still get the point?
I don't think so, you have to let the ball miss the table.

I thought that if you serve and the ball goes off the side (as opposed to the back) of the table after bouncing, you have to re-serve.
Also, I thought that if you serve and the ball double-bounces on the opposite side, your opponent gets a point.
Are these things true?
+Levi “When will we want wantons” Quickburger5000 I don't believe so no. Hope that helps? Be sure to share this video and subscribe :)
Ninh Ly thanks
***** No, if your opponents lets the ball bounce twice, he loses a point, as you're allowed one bounce only.
Ninh Ly I and everyone else with whom I've ever played have always played that if it double bounces on the receiver's side on a serve, the receiver gets a point.
Just looked it up officially:
2.7.1 The ball, having been served or returned, shall be struck so that it passes over or around the net assembly and touches the opponent's court, either directly or after touching the net assembly.
2.10.1 Unless the rally is a let, a player shall score a point
2.10.1.3 if, after he has made a service or a return, the ball touches anything other than the net assembly before being struck by his opponent;
So as you can see from the laws above, if the server makes a good service (in which the ball bounces once on his side of the table, and once on his opponent's side of the table), the ball must not touch anything else other than the net assembly before being hit by his opponent. So if the ball bounces a second time on the table (or the floor, or wall etc), then the SERVER wins the point, not the receiver.
Thank you! Great video!!
What if the ball touches the white edges during the rally is it a re serve??
No, it counts!
@@NinhLyUK then why r white edges present..?
nice... only bit missing when serving is on lets (people often think you only get 1 or 2 lets per service, when it's actually unlimited)
What if in doubles game we touch net during serve. Do we call it again or continue.
It's still a let and it's replayed again.

Once you got reflexes and decent ball placement down, spin will be another huge hurdle if you want to take your game to the next level.

Hey can anyone help me in service do you have to throw the ball 20 centimeters in the air or not???
Yes.
@@NinhLyUK thanks man helps me a lot
Any time bro!
When the game is getting intense, and each player hits the ball hard... could you “Baby” hit it? Like when your opponent is far back.. expecting a large hit, but you hit as gently as you can.
Is that legal?
Yes it's legal - but highly ill advised as an opponent can react quickly to that.
Ninh Ly thanks
