    I first know about 18650 batteries and chargers through vaping, then 21700 when using high lumens torchlight. Thank you for making this educational video MJ.

    You are such a good educator, fantastic job. I love my 18650s and have learned a few things from this video. Thank you very much. For my bike lights i use older models which use batteries. This gives me "infinite" run time. I learned this in ultramarathon running, especially during winter when there are 12 hours of darkness to run through, and especially when wet the ground is darker and roots seem to disappear at under 200L, but it was difficult to find something that would run long enough, even with lots of AAs in drop bags. LEDs have changed the game. So with enclosed batteries one you run out the light is dead, whereas one that uses batteries you can swap them out, and 18650s last a long time. The other concern i found in my garmin. The onboard batteries last 10 hours or less with continuous GPS, and for a 20 hour race that doesn't work, but the advantage of the model i have is it can be charged while it is operational (it doesn't have to be turned off). I haven't tested this over a long time period but i have tested it. This means i can run it with a power bank (10k) in a close frame bag with a cable attached and it should run longer, hopefully for the 20 hours i need it. The 5k battery you showed with a tiny charger would fit way better. It is also interesting to see what happens if something like this gets wet, or say you protect it but over time the cable is higher and water runs along the cable and into your bank or battery. One downside of the unencapsulated/surrounded battery, vs a powerbank, especially if the bank is ipx rated like my external wireless speaker/powerbank. Wondering if you have experience with this, and weather, from something like your Mongolia story. For touring i will probably run this new solar panel i got. There is also a stove that comes with a powerbank that is charged from the fire through heat conversion. And there is a german bike touring front hub that is fairly lightweight that has a cable that fishes up to above the steering stem with a USB port - it can run an 80L front light when travelling >=10 kmph. With all these inputs and outputs i still think the powerbank is viable as a centralizer/collector/converter. Along with devices that master the efficiency of storing and converting as there is energy lost to this. And to weatherproofing and also to cold - when i run in the cold i store the battery inside my jacket next to my chest. I expect cycling will be similar, with the extra cold wind creates.

    Brilliant explanation of all the types, it's great to see a flashlight company making these educational videos. Many other brands barely have information about their own flashlights, let alone educational content.
    Question, when comparing the 14500 to the AA, how come putting in a higher Volt battery will fry the device, however, you've mentioned for other batteries it's okay to put in a higher "A" (8A vs 4A) output battery into a device?

    • @NitecoreSG
      @NitecoreSG  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Usually AA devices don’t have built in circuit protection, say a tv remote control. And voltage is the one that will fry, not amphere. So 8A vs 4A is ok.

    For me the 18650s are the best, excellent ratio bettween dimensions and mAh also lights can use cr123 as back ups.
    21700s are too big with modern efficiency, 18650s are the best format IMO.

    Is it safe to assume that using a 8A battery in a flashlight that requires 4A will prolong the life of battery since the battery would heat up less during the discharge process, resulting in reduced stress on a battery?
    Also wanted to ask, so far as the voltage does not exceed 4.2v, any battery whether 8A or 15A, will only allow a flashlight to draw current up till the max limit specified by the respective battery(if needed). But it no way pushes extra current into the circuit and damages it. Is my understanding correct?

    Hello,
    I have a doubt that I would like to clarify.
    I generally use my UM2 to charge Ni-MH battery types, recently I purchased a few USB rechargeable 650mAh 14500s and I observed that the batteries charge in almost 2hrs 40mins using a 5V 1A power supply with USB cable and nearly 2hrs with the UM2 charger but after the charge reaches 650mAh the charger doesn't stop unless it reaches 4.2V. So is it ok to charge the 14500s till they reach 650mAh because I thought charging the USB rechargeable batteries with an Intelligent charger would likely extend the life of the battery compared to a constant power supply when every possible and while traveling I use the USB cable way. So which is the preferred method to charge USB rechargeable batteries to extend the life.

    What's the difference between UMS4 & SC4 charger?

    • @NitecoreSG
      @NitecoreSG  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      SC4 has been discontinued, don't have to look at it anymore. It's old tech now. Go with the UMS series
