There are variety of choices in 18650 battery made in china. The 18650 is not a consumer standard, the channel that reaches consumer is chaos and mostly illegal (some are disqualified waste from factory, some are disassembly from electric waste). The reliable way to get those is to place order in batches to qualified factory or get them from disassembling qulaity yet cheap power bank like XiaoMi.
If Ultrafire was selling a car: - it flies, no fuel required, V12 engine, all wheels have electric motor, it can dive into the sea, can reach supersonic speeds, no spare parts necessary... Daum people, please be careful about these little things, they hold great amount of energy and Chinese makers are really dishonest.

I recently was inspired to do my own tests. I found the same results. The Japanese batteries were 10 years old, salvaged from old laptops. After two weeks of testing, they all tested the same and within 80%+ of their stated capacity. The newer Chinese batteries gave me as little as 10% of the rated capacity.
I'm using an EFest 18650 battery in my vape mod which works fine, lasts me about a day of normal vaping using a 0.6 Ohm load. Tried several different Samsung blue and green batteries and they weren't any better. It depends on the application, including load and amperage draw.

funny to see how the cheaper brands misspelled "shelf life" 0:58 - ultrafire "sheef-life" 4:05 - castnoo "sheef-life" 4:55 - bxe "shell life" unsurprisingly, these brands also added an extra digit to their mAh ratings from around 900 to 9000.
Wrong spelling is a good indicator to stay away from a product. One thing I noticed, the error seems to have a pattern. Those different brands could be manufactured by just one company. It was just re-branded. Great vid keeping us entertained while we are going thru a lockdown. Keep safe guys.

I would like a hammer test on these. I work in electronics recycling and these 18650 batteries starts like 99% of fires at our factory. I would like to know if some are more prone to bursting in to flames when mangled than others or if it is just dependent on their charge state. If you do test it, do it outside on a windy day, the smoke is definitely not good for you. Also, don't use water to put it out or have a source of it nearby, it not only worsens the fire but it also creates more of the very poisonous hydrogen fluoride gas that is generated by the burning of lithium hexafluorophosphate.
@@Ormagoden94 What? The batteries in vape pens are usually lithium polymer, they aren't nearly as bad as 18650. Also, did they get killed by poisoning? There's no way the explosion from a small lithium polymer battery could kill someone unless they held it pressed right next to an artery or something. Or was there a time and place that 18650 was common in vape pens? Those would be a serious hazard and I could see that being able to kill someone.
@@skitidet4302 There are a lot of bigger vape machines that use 2x 18650 batteries. You need those if you want to do up to 200 W sub-ohm vaping (meaning the coil has as little as 0.1 ohm resistance). They are more fun than the pens because they can produce a huge amount of vapor, but they fell a little out of favor because only massive douchebags used them in public spaces. They can basically be turned into fog generators with the right liquid. On the other hand, these are not a danger at all if you buy good 18650 cells like the Murata (former Sony) VTC5 or VTC6 and if you are a little careful with the cells. Put some additional shrink-wrap over them to prevent exposed metal, only transport them in silicon "socks" or battery boxes, and only use good, reliable charging devices. I've been using them at home for many years and never had a problem nor have I ever been worried. I mean, I used to do some rc model drone flying. Those high-amp drone LiPos can give you the creeps. @ Okay, lets see how well you do using a foreign language that you have no or limited knowledge of; and on top of that, lets make that foreign language use an entirely different written system, as using a common alphabet isn't comparable from going from Chinese to English. You can't really complain about someone else's use of a language when you clearly don't fully understand the language itself, try teaching yourself some grammar, so you can actually look literate. Things such as capitalizing 'Chinese,' putting an apostrophe in 'can't,' maybe try adding a comma after 'dumb' as well, you might also want to add 'people' after 'Chinese.' Also, when using, "... craps," do you mean to use 'pieces of crap'? Not to mention the, "... fake...,' part of that statement is outright false, what makes them fake? They're an _alternative_ product; if they were fake they just wouldn't work, at all, like a dummy place holder. If you don't understand what an alternative product is, look at name brands and generic brands that offer the same product. Typical hypocritical, uneducated, racist scum, it seems, as you clearly don't know what grammar is, can't form a proper statement, use proper logic, have any kind of informed opinion, and you single out a specific people when the situation could happen to any foreign people. Please, keep your toxicity to yourself. Nobody wants to see your racist, hypocritical, uneducated, and uniformed opinions. If you feel the need to be racist, go seek help.

I'm surprised "consumer report" hasn't tried to buy his silence.
you don't take a random garbage brand batter in China and compare it with LG or Samsung... this is so biased. There are hundreds of decent brand batteries in China yet you choose one of the most low-quality ones...
This channel clearly does no research at all. A quick search on the website of UltraFire revealed thet the biggest 18650 battery they make is 3600mAh and weighs 93 grams. If he did any research he would know that, don't trust some random guy on TH-cam
Great comparison! I use Samsung 35E cells in my performance rechargeable flashlights, the runtime is pretty impressive! It would be cool to see you test some proprietary flashlight batteries from large names like Olight, Sofirn, Astrolux, etc. and see if they actually stand up to their claims! I test flashlights and would love to include this information in my reviews!
So you’re kinda saying that Chinese battery companies overrate their battery life by as much as 8 times? You could have knocked me over with a feather.
You're funny. "Buyer beware do some research". You are my research. Great job. I use quite a bit of these batteries and your information is so valuable. Looking forward to your videos often.
The reason he says do research is because there are a bunch of clones out there. You would need the manufactures spec. Trust me too I have been burned esp on Amazon and Ebay.
I used to think big brands charge us extra & cheap batteries are almost 80% as good. I surely was never into those 9000mAh ratings. Now I know what to buy (not that I'd buy it definitely).
But then camera batteries are SO much more expensive than the Chinese knockoffs. Even when some of my batteries die several months to a year later or just can't hold a charge, it's still worth the buy simply due to numbers unless you absolutely need reliability. I'm just a casual camera guy so in my last 13 years of shooting, buying the real deal battery at $60 versus $12 for a knockoff made a lot of sense from my experience.
the most important thing for these are max A and continuous A rating. its a quick way to have your batteries explode reliably pulling 35+ peak amps or 20+ continuous on anything not rated for it. if performance isn't a concern in the particular application sure mah/hr vs dollar comes into play but if performance DOES matter the 25+ amp batteries do matter.
you can tell them what to print and you tell them what quality you want to sell , dewalts, craftsman, ryiobi ,etc... they all come from china branded by a company prestige or not ... you get what you pay for is the name of the game , so you cheat yourself by going cheap !
The weights alone on the Chinese cells i think speaks volumes to their quality not only where they super light compared to the others but there was also a pretty significant weight difference between 2 of the supposed same cells. From your tests seems like the LG cells are really good quality and offer the most bang for the buck.
Don't give Chinese a hint; they will fill the batteries with lead then. They actually stuffed the seafood that was exported to Korea with lead already.

You would know if they were protected. Protected 18650 cells have a clearly visible PCB on the bottom side under the wrapper with a strip of metal connecting up to the top. The off-brand cells that claim to have protection are flat-out lying.
Non of these cells have built in protection. That is normally built into the device. There are some batteries that have built in protection but they are also just a touch longer than these standard 18650 cells. Panasonic makes some nice cells with built in protection.
You don’t need to test this just check if a pcb is present. Then test if it works. Issue is even the ones that have pcb’s they are designed poorly and don’t cut off at the right points.

One of the reasons the reputable brands of batteries have a bit less power capacity than the absolute maximum, is to ensure safety by not going too thin on the internal elements. Samsung took a hard lesson on not exceeding what's safe to cram into a battery with the Note 7. I'd generally avoid any battery which has a higher capacity in the same space than their model. Should skin the chinese batteries and see if there's any other markings under the wrap. Re-skinning and selling used batteries as 'new' is very common in China. When the chinese "lithium ion" battery said "environmentally friendly" I spit out my lemonade...
Samsung actually didn't exceed what was safe - it was one of the battery manufacturers who didn't produce inside specs. Their battery was a little too large and therefore got punctured by a component or the case. This is why it didn't happen to all phones because the other manufacturer(s) did produce to spec and delivered the right size battery. Samsung should have noticed though, it's still their fault. But they didn't plan unrealistically, because the other battery manufacturer(s) were obviously able to deliver the right size of battery.
And btw the reputable brands just deliver whatever capacity they can realistically and safely produce. It's not like the China-"brands" ever actually deliver a higher capacity, safe or unsafe. They just write whatever numbers they like on the shrink wrap.
@@maximilianmustermann5763 Technically true, but after the incident, they backed away from pushing the limit of what could be safe for a battery. The replacement was down 200 mah, because it had healthier margins for error, to lean less on 'luck' with manufacturing inconsistencies.

Battery mooch did testing on most of these batteries, and they line up with your testing. I run the vtc5a in my ecig for high draw, it's a fantastic battery.
First off excellent video! A general rule of thumb is, the fancier the battery wrap, the worse the battery is. There is no 18650 with a capacity of higher than 3500mah. The higher the capacity, the lower the current rating. NEVER buy a battery from Ebay. As he has proved in this video, all 18650's are not created equal.
Simple rule 1 - buy Samsung, LG or Panasonic. Simple rule 2 - buy from a reputable source. Of course, there's more to things than these two rules, but if you do follow these two rules and it is hard to go wrong. I was tempted to add Simple rule 3 - don't buy any battery rated 3600 mah or higher, but that rule is actually redundant. If you follow the first two simple rules, you won't need Simple rule 3.
I have a 10 year old LG phone that I don't use anymore, I turned it on and the battery is still good on it compared to my iphone or anything rechargeable from duracell and engergizer. Very impressive!

But then camera batteries are SO much more expensive than the Chinese knockoffs. Even when some of my batteries die several months to a year later or just can't hold a charge, it's still worth the buy simply due to numbers unless you absolutely need reliability. @@williamlee7782 Yes it totally makes sense when we aren't a regular user. They are just fine for the price. Both have their advantages.
the most important thing for these are max A and continuous A rating. its a quick way to have your batteries explode reliably pulling 35+ peak amps or 20+ continuous on anything not rated for it.

Well, before you test the chinese batteries for over-current protection ...

Non of these cells have built in protection. That is normally built into the device. There are some batteries that have built in protection but they are also just a touch longer than these standard 18650 cells. Panasonic makes some nice cells with built in protection.

The higher the capacity, the lower the current rating. NEVER buy a battery from Ebay. As he has proved in this video, all 18650's are not created equal.
Great point! Thank you
Simple rule 1 - buy Samsung, LG or Panasonic.
@@wturber Sony makes good batteries as well as Molicel which used to be part of Sony.
I've become familiar with this, i got samsung 21700s instead for my ebike pack. 3000 mAh and 35A continuous discharge
where do you buy good batteries
I have a 10 year old LG phone that I don't use anymore, I turned it on and the battery is still good on it compared to my iphone or anything rechargeable from duracell and engergizer. Very impressive!
Thanks for sharing.
"Enciromental friendly" on a final product ?
Lol...China...
Hah, you noticed also 😎
Shell life. Or sheef life. 😂
@@JToona I didn't choose the Sheef Life, the Sheef life chose me.
Like to see you do better
All standard lithium ion cells are based on cobalt instead of cadmium, which is considered safe (you can incinerate it with few problems). Unfortunately it is mined by enslaved kids in the Congo. Enjoy your cheap Chinese phone!
Mate, your tests are AWESOME, I really enjoy them - keep rolling! Gianluca, Italy.
Thanks, will do!
I love my LG MJ1s. I use them exclusively in my camping equipment and can go for a 3 day camping trip without recharging.
where did you get them?
Panasonic, LG, Samsung and Ampsplus (21700) for me 👍
This channel is using a different way to demonize Chinese, westerners like to fabricate fake video to demonize China and finally fool people with no brain, it is disgusting, firstly, using the CHEAPEST China products to compare to the most branded non China product itself is ridiculous, secondly, the price of the China product mentioned in the video is more than 10 times cheaper in China than the price you mentioned in the video, so who you actually pay most of the price of the product to? The answer is THE IMPORTER AND MIDDLE MAN in your country. The real fact is CCP is already the current biggest high-tech entrepreneur and capitalist in the world, China contributes the most to the world and western countries grab the most with even inhuman measurements, it sounds ridiculous right? Use your brain to think further when you come across anything about China from westerners, western people are too jealous about the returning of the China power and tried very hard to fabricate fake videos, spread rumors to demonize China, shamelessness is continue until they destroy themselves with their inferior personality. Chai From Malaysia.
I was about to rebuild the Greenworks 80v battery pack. After watching this video, I don't want to waste my time with Chinese cells. I don't know how you can made a video with so much details information in just under 15min. without biting your tongue 😀 Thank you so much for making this video
"sheef" and "shell" life are certainly odd typos.
Thanks for the feedback.
@@ProjectFarm and you missed environmentally friendly 😂
They're not typos. They're misspellings by people who (barely) speak English as a second language.
Lots of people who learn a second language don't learn to spell in that language. They likely genuinely think that's how the word is pronounced and spelled.
@@billybobjoe198 They're made by people who literally do not know the language. They're working off a translation to know what the foreign glyphs mean, but they don't know the difference between an l or an f. They're just copying images.
Western tattoo artists do the same thing when copying Chinese characters. They might have some random guide saying what the characters mean, but they don't know how to create them properly. (Or worst case they have some gibberish guide that doesn't even make proper characters at all)
"encironmental friendly" also 😂
A down loadable file with all of those graphs would be a great reference.
You could use your computers "snipping" tool and save the graph into your computer.
@@georgeleong1572 it would still be usefull to have the data in a spreadsheet. It could also be used to see if there is a connection between the weight and mA
Use your smartphone to take a screenshot and quit being whiny after this man went through all this effort to give you all the data you needed for free....
Stop being lazy. He gave you the data, spending his time and money on this video. The least you could do is say thanks and put it in your own spreadsheet.
No offense, I hate people like you. This guy spent a hell of a lot of time to get this data for you....FREE.... Then you have the nerve to complain you want more....
He gave u the data, so put it in excel bro
You have the most thorough, scientifically controlled and impartial product reviews available, period. Another amazing review! I look forward to more content.
Thanks so much!
To be really scientific you'd have to measure many more samples of each battery. Two is barely enough to generalize about.
Excellent VDO - Again Really appreciated this one.
Thanks!
Finally, I could see the comparison that I requested. Thank you project farm!
Thanks for the idea!
