Fishing Line 101: What is a leader line? Which fishing lines are best?

  • It seems as if there is an endless choice of fishing lines today. From all of the different braided fishing line, different leader line types, mono, fluorocarbon, etc.
    Note: This fishing line video is part of an online kid's fishing course. To access the full kid's course for free, click here now: www.saltstrong....
    Some takeaways from this fishing line video:
    Keep the main line light as possible. In most cases, this main fishing line will be braid unless you are using a kid's reel. In that case, monofilament is just fine.
    Thin fishing line will also allow you to cast further as well.
    Regarding braided fishing line, our favorite is PowerPro.
    For kids fishing for inshore fish, the highest pound test line you should need in most cases in 10lb test line. In most cases, use 15lb to 30lb leader line. For kids, you really only need monofilmanent (not fluorocarbon leader).
    As mentioned in the video, here is how to tie the Double Uni Knot: www.saltstrong....

    Always had that question but never got an answer as good as yours! I use braid for longer casting but use 30lb to 50lb mono for my shock leader. As you said and I totally agree, fluorocarbon is so expensive and I cant tell the difference (Walmart is the best and least expensive I have found for mono)... Thank you, great video!

    I do a lot of surf fishing and I find that using a Swivel in between the main line and leader line is very important. Swivel keeps the main line from twisting and causing problems.

    Good video, I have gone more and more to braid line, so thin and so strong

    • @Saltstrong
      @Saltstrong  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, I have found braid to be much more effective for inshore fishing since it allows for longer casts, less water/wind drag, and better feel. But I recommend mono for those who are just getting started (especially kids) because it's less expensive and the knots are easier to tie.

    What's the disadvantages to using the same strengths? Like 20LB braid with 20LB leader.

  • @gregorybutcher9555

    In my opinion It depends where you fish, if you close to rocks then a lower lb leader and higher lb main line is better so that if you get stuck on rocks you can just snap it off without losing your whole line and possible your whole rig, if no rocks then I'd maybe use this type of setup but that 10lb main line is still to light in my opinion for big fish go for 20lb for the minimum

    I've been fishing most of my life and fish braid on some reels and mono on others. I'm thinking of switching to braid on all my spinning reels. any advice on test and color. I mostly troll for Spanish, blues and, less often, mahi. I troll with light rods. Penn battles and tdl 15. I also fish for reds and trout with the same spinners. looking to buy a large spool so really thinking hard about this purchase. let me know your thoughts.

      I've used both green and high vis yellow line, and can't tell a difference between strike percentages, so I now stick with yellow since it appears better on camera.
      As for test line size, I stick with 10 lb PowerPro for almost all of my inshore fishing needs targeting redfish, trout, and snook... I'll go up to 20 lb if fishing for big snook around structure or if going after tarpon.
      Here's a link to see the exact leader assembly I prefer to used when inshore fishing along with line types for various species: www.saltstrong.com/articles/how-to-tie-a-fishing-leader-for-snook-redfish-seatrout/

    so you're saying that I can have a 10 pound mono main line with a 40 pound leader? Am I able to catch big game fish without having to worry about the main line snapping? Just curious.

    • @Saltstrong
      @Saltstrong  8 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Yes, it is possible to catch big fish with 10 lb line and 40 lb leader... and the line won't snap assuming your drag is set properly, the fish doesn't wrap you up in structure, and you have enough line in your reel to handle any long runs the fish makes. Here's a video showing a 40+ lb tarpon being caught on 10 lb line and 30 lb leader: th-cam.com/video/K9cJeyjxeFk/w-d-xo.html

      If you're using braided line in your reel, then I highly recommend using a mono leader. If you're using monofilament line, then a leader is not necessary as long as the strength of the line can handle the fish you're targeting.

    • @Saltstrong

      With just a short strand of mono, there is very little stretch so any sensitivity loss it may cause to the line system isn't noticeable.

    How does using a stronger leader affect the line overall?

    • @Saltstrong

      Using a stronger leader will increase the odds of a fish seeing it, but it'll decrease a fish's ability to break off once hooked.

    • @Saltstrong
      @Saltstrong  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Braid is not typically used as a leader because it's not clear and doesn't handle abrasion on rough surfaces very well. The more common approach is to use a braid mainline with a monofilament leader line.

    • @lukesimonds3653
      @lukesimonds3653 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's mostly due to monofilament line being less visible in the water than braid. Plus, it's better at handling abrasion without breaking.

    I think buying "leader" line is a waist of money. Just buy two main line spools. One twice or three times the strength for "leader" line use. That way you get six times the "leader" line, as you would just getting "leader" line.
