I've been crazy about my CIVIVI praxis. Hasn't left my pocket since I got it. Well worth the $43 bucks. Fit, finish and overall build quality are top notch for the price point.

The reason the Ontario RAT and ESEE seem so similar is they’re both designed by the same people essentially. RAT stands for Randall’s Adventure and Training. The Randall is for Jeff Randall who is one of the founders of RAT Cutlery.
They licensed the design to Ontario knife Co to build them for them before they started making them themselves through Rowen Knives.
About 8yrs ago they changed their name from RAT Cutlery to ESEE Knives. You’ll notice that both have similar looking fixed blades too ( the original RAT / ESEE fixed blades (RC-3 aka ESEE 3, and RC-4 aka ESEE 4).
You’ll also notice that the ESEE knives logo still says Randall’s Adventure and Training.

To remedy the hard open on the Gerber flatiron tie a small knot in the lanyard hole and it will act as a thumb stud to facilitate easier one-handed opening! I can literally flick my open without trying now and I have the shortest fingers of any person I know or have ever met! Great video! Love your channel!

Kershaw Atmos, definitely. It's lighter (just 2 oz), sleeker (Dmitry Sinkovich design), and easier to handle and carry in your pocket (no thumb stud, deep carry clip.) Excellent Kershaw flipper action. And it's only $30.

I lost my brother not long ago, my condolences. As for knives left off the list, one of the first I'd note is the Civivi Praxis. The leaf-shaped 3.75 inch blade of 9Cr18MoV is superb! I like it better than any of my Civivis, even my Damascus/carbon fiber Chronic. I couldn't believe how smooth, well made, and excellent performing this knife is for every day.

  • @marycahill546
    @marycahill546 4 ปีที่แล้ว

You put together an excellent budget list. Spyderco knives are great but not worth the money. I only need a knife for opening small packages. I love my Victorinox Excelsior used on a lanyard with tiny bright Olight 1R EOS rechargeable flashlight -- very light combo and super handy. The Rat 2 is too big for me mostly but I have it to use occasionally. I don't work anymore but always had an Opinel # 8 in my lunch bag, and I still use it on picnics as it is the best tomato slicer around -- also very light. Their garden knife is cheaper and will also serve well. Note: always wipe it dry after use. The Case Sodbuster Jr. is a wonderful knife, one of my favorites as it fits my small hand just right. The Pioneer always comes with me hiking, along with a Mora fixed blade. Buck Bantam is a handy very sharp small knife I have enjoyed, also very light -- it's just usually I like to have 2 blades on a knife -- but might be too small for a man. Rough Rider makes pretty good traditional knives -- well worth the money and a nice way to collect various traditional types.

My favorite "Under $50" pocket knife is the Ruike P108. With it's 14C28N spear point Sandvik Steel blade, deep pocket clip (tip up, right hand only), "Beta Plus" safety lock (when open), lightning fast flipper action, Stainless Steel frame lock, and slim and elegant design more than makes up for the 4.16 oz weight for EDC.

Both Rat models with D2 steel can be had for less than $50. The new Civivi line from WE Knives are also in this price range. There is also a line of D2 flipper knives from Steel Will under $50. Much better options than some knives on this list.

I've been looking at off grid knives they are 59 to 75 I think, and the ka bar Dozier is 14 for the pink to 22 for zombie green, if you want real budget combat ready knives, from smoky mountain knife works, like 6.99 to 12.99, I got one I have been using gutted fish, cut boxes rope, now if you chopping branches in half prolly need a harder steel.

Another alternative to the Tenacious comes from Spyderco themselves (although there are some who completely deny this): the byrd Cara Cara 2. It's sometimes referred to as the "poor man's Endura" as it's very similar, but with less expensive steel (8Cr13MoV -- just like the Tenacious -- instead of VG-10). The CC2's blade is actually longer than that of the Tenacious (3.75 inches vs 3.375), but the cutting edge is shorter (about 3.18 vs 3.375); however, the CC2 has a finger choil, allowing you to get close for more detailed work. The CC2's available in G10, same as the Tenacious (a few grams heavier, usually a few dollars cheaper), but the CC2 is also found in stainless steel (heavier, cheaper) and FRN (lighter, CHEAPEST!). Like the Tenacious, it has a four-position clip (Up Down Left Right); UNLIKE the Tenacious, it's a mid-back lock instead of liner lock (making it more ambi-friendly).
It may not have the panache or the round hole of a Spyderco (a point that quite a few Spydie fans are QUICK and LOUD to point out), but for a beater knife it's hard to beat!

GREAT VIDEO as usual. I LOVE my Spyderco Tenacious!! It's an awesome knife. I've had it for years. Only prefer a Benchmade Griptillian over it for my EDC purposes, but that wouldn't fit in this category. The Opinel #8 makes an amazing camp companion. Good idea to store a couple of those in a cook box for when out on the campgrounds enjoying a nice steak dinner cooked over the fire pit. :)

I have an older model swish army knife, not sure the exact year or model but from the markings and emblem on the handle it’s from the early 70s-late 80s if I remember correctly. I love it but the only problem is that is has a cork screw. I’ve never use it. If it had the screw driver I would carry it everyday. Instead I only carry it if I’m wearing these two pairs of shorts I have because the small pocket up front fits it perfectly and is comfy when sitting down. Even then I’m more likely to use the small swish army knife I keep on my keys since the smaller blade is easier to sharpen
Edit: so I did a little looking and i believe it’s a economy swish army knife. It has deep red handles. The emblem shield is hot stamped into the handle with a silver color to it. Which I believe would date it before 1979. But then with the blade stamp it says Victorinox Switzerland stainless rostfrei and on the other side has an emblem and officier Suisse which I believe dates it 1980-2005 so I’m not really sure... any idea knowledgeable people? It has the main blade, a smaller blade, can open, bottle opener, cork screw, an awe with a hole in it, and a split ring hole

Word of caution on the original Shuffle. There are actually 2 models, the 3800 and the 8700. The 3800 uses 3Cr13MoV whereas the 8700 uses 8Cr13MoV. Scales on both are glass filled resin, so pretty hard, not really rubbery.

Check out the #Kershaw Barricade, 8650, blaze orange, strap cutter, window breaker, speedsafe opening. 8cr13mov. Clip, tip down, right side. #Knifecenter has a hugh sale on #spyderco right now. Look for Rat 2 in D2 steel. #Opinels come in stainless or carbon steel blades . That #Statgear slinger, looks great, rocks. One of my favorite EDC knives is a #Smith& Wesson swmp1bs, wicked little blade for cutting rope, cardboard & plastic. 4034 steel, magic opening, glass breaker, safety lock, tip up right side carry. Great job on this video, thanks! Subscribed.

Spyderco manbug and ka bar tdi fighting knife. Both badass, compact, highly utilitarian, and under 50 bucks.

Other than a blade for The cutting surface that aw is by far the most useful tool you're going to find it's actually scary useful when you're in a pinch and you need a drill

I think one you should’ve included is any of the gerber paraframes. Not the greatest budget knife out there but they’re pretty inexpensive, u can buy them pretty much everywhere, i see a fair amount of people carry them, and they’re not too bad. Plus i mean the gerber paraframe mini is the first knife I’ve ever gotten when i was young and is what first got me into knives so they hold some sentimental value to me.

I was being tossed between the rat 1 and tenacious. Just couldn’t get over the looks of the rats. Plus I found the sprint run of tenacious with carbon fiber for just over $50. It will be my new beater carry to replace the case mid fold hunter I had.

What do you think about the CRKT brand? I bought one and was breaking in the sheath and accidentally cut myself, almost lost the finger! So I know they’re plenty sharp lol

Steel will cutback "urban" series in d2 is my edc. I typically swap between that or a benchmade griptillian or a kizer kesmec.

Hey. Love the videos. Just wanted to add that the Ontario Rat2 does also come in d2 steel. It is a serious consideration for my next edc knife. What does everyone think of it? Also wanted to make custom micarta scales for it possibly to change the shape of the handle if possible. I feel the same way about the look of it. Keep up the great videos. You got me back into my edc game!

Isn't the frame lock essentially a liner lock but with no scale on the side of the knife? That's what it appears to be in the Esee Vs. the Ontario.

For me, the Spyderco Efficient is a better designed Tenacious but with a shorter blade. I have both, each with a deep carry custom clip :)
Kershaw Skyline, Injection and the Cold Steel Tuff Lite are awesome choices too

I miss carrying my pocket knife, I spent most of my time at school and I cannot take it near school. I had many situations where a knife would have been helpful.

8Cr13MoV is underrated. Common for budget but hated a lot. It's really not bad. My Kershaws & other knives with 8Cr13MoV are still going strong. In the end, I have to resharpen my knives with other steels, too. It's budget but still works.

Yea I agree. If you know your steels, you can prevent damage easily by not sending a softer steel to do the job of 1095 spring steel, for instance. Each steel has it's purpose, so I buy my knives based on matching what I need them to do to the steel they're made of.
