All has to do with ur mental strength. Weak minded people will eat the dog when it was clearly the wrong choice to make considering his body rejected it. Especially when he was with him for the entirety of his journey just for him to be found the next day.

@@justenzo6342 after a while without solid foods your body adjusts to whatever you are eating. This is also why he threw up the berries, he needed to slowly introduce them into his diet but of course being lost on the jungle doesn't really give you much time to do things like that

I had been on the brink of starvation before and when I had finally eaten I also threw up what I had. I remember I couldn't walk anymore and was only shaking on the ground. It's really scary.

It made me sad too when he ate the dog, I was hoping he would be able to stop himself, but watching and reading a lot of survival stuff, I know enough that dehydration and starvation can mess you up big time. Some people even resort to cannibalism.
How is no one talking about the dog finding him again after 2 weeks in the jungle, seems impossible.
Dogs have a great sense of smell and can track down owners. This dog's best chance of survival was reuniting with his human after they got separated at the white water rapids.
Cashoe probably tracked Benedict's scent and trail through the jungle for those 2 weeks.

This is an amazing summary. But you should all watch the episode of "I shouldn't be alive" about this topic it's incredible. And it shows the absolute dire situation he was in with the dog which cannot be understated. People who have never been in that situation simply cannot understand.

I remember when the tv show I Shouldn't Be Alive did an episode on this guy, was easily one of my favorites full of sadness and the like.
One of my great Uncles got lost from his unit in New Guinea for two weeks, The natives were cannibals and head shrinkers. He made it back but had jungle rot on his legs and they wanted to amputate his legs but he refused. Lived into his mid 60s

Complicated question with a complicated answer. Im general I would say yes I would eat my pet in a survival situation, the will to survive can really push one sometimes. Having said that I don't know if I would have tried to eat Casheo at that point- provided I could even form thoughts close to my 'norm' after all this.
For one- Knowing that there is a fair chance that it would just be a 'waste' due to not actually being able to eat the meat, after reaching that point from starvation and dehydration, let alone complications from malaria and other possible issues. Not being able to stomach solid food, let alone meat, after starvation and dehydration is something I've experienced myself, and is obviously something he had experienced by now, and would have at least had some idea about being a possibility (though his mental state at this point may render such knowledge moot.)
Though of course there is the idea of more slowly attempting to consume something (lightest stuff possible) to get back to the point he could handle this meat may be a thought.
Other than knowing that I may physically be unable to actually consume this meat, I also think going through such an ordeal with the dog- especially after being reunited almost two weeks after the river accident- would make me less likely to do it too. The fact that the dog survived along with me in this incident, and then proceeded to 'track' me successfully after, would definitely endear him more than in 'usual' circumstances (well as 'usual' as they could be having wound up stranded in the jungle etc.)
On top of those thoughts, if the dog was doing 'well' (or even just better than me) and I thought I was close to death anyway, what with the malaria and everything else going on, I may have the thought of at least wanting the dog to survive, maybe even attempting to attach a note or something for after I pass.
I'm sure in a similar situation even more thoughts may seem more important tipping it one eay or the other, but these were my initial, and strongest thoughts on such a situation.
Having said all that, it's truly hard to know what you would really do until in a real situation yourself. Especially with the further complications of being so mentally beaten down by that point, along with likely experiencing hallucinations and whatnot, many people may act in ways vastly different from when even slightly more 'clear minded' from a single one of these conditions, to say nothing of them further complicating each other.

When you’re that hungry, the fundamental thing that differentiates living things from non living things takes over, the want for self preservation. He would have eaten throw up from a diseased pig at the point in which he killed his dog.
