  • Welcome back to another ultralight rod video. Shout out to my buddy Micah for loaning me this rod to try. This is the most expensive ultralight rod I have used so far! At $370, this is clearly a premium option on the market today. I wasn't sure what to expect, but after fishing with it, I definitely have my own personal opinions. I don't tell people how to spend their money; I just do what I can to inform people what they will get and let them decide.
    Check Out The St Croix Legend Elite Panfish Rod Here: stcroixrods.co...
    This rod is very sensitive, it is semi-versatile, and it balances pretty neutral with a 1000 size reel. This is the 6' Fast UL model, which I think is the most productive size for ultralights in general (after testing several sizes from numerous companies). Overall, I was very impressed with this rod, but I don't think I will personally be spending $370 of my own hard earned money on one of them.

    All of the Crappie caught on this day fell victim to my micro finesse approach - the Donkey Tail Jr on a 1/32oz Mule Jig. It was a fun day despite the fact that most of the Crappie I found were really small. With the conditions, I wasn't too mad about it!

    Try JDM. You won't come back. I sincerely recommend Tenryu Lunakia 6'10. Ridiculous rod. Ultralight but very sharp and sensitive unlike my Gloomis GLX TSR 862 that's got the action of a wet noodle. Weighs 2 ounces. It'll run you $300 delivered and this rod is worth every penny. Titanium guides, carbon fiber handle that's extremely comfortable, the works. Now of course with JDM gear you have their domestic quirks like very small guides designed for either very light flour or equivalent diameter PE braid.

    That reel seat isn't the worst I've seen, but at that price point it's disappointing. Why should any part of your hand touch those hard, coarse threads? Many much cheaper rods are a lot more pleasant to hold on to.

    • @FishAnything
      @FishAnything  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is a fair point. Honestly, the reel seat was a bit underwhelming for a near $400 expense.

    For Ultra Lights I feel once you get into the $300 and above range, you might as well just get a GLoomis Or Phenix blank and get a custom wrap job so you get exactly what you want configured to your own specifications.

    • @FishAnything

    Nice. Always wanted to see this rod in your hands. Found st croix to be too tip heavy for my liking. But good rod. But Ethan please get your hand on a Shimano soare xR super ultralight rod. You prob won’t want to use any other rod after you try it 🫠. And yes I spend too much money on rods and reels.

    I love to catch giant crappie. Panfishing is starting to get popular but will never be as popular as bass of trout or the other manlier species. But ul fishing takes skill and a great drag. Anyone like me would see that this rod is worth the cash bc as u said u feel more bites. If u feel in the line it’s kinda too late. It’s not like plastic fishing for bass. Panfish don’t choke down all the time. They can be fickle and nibble. I kind of bite matters too. A nice $150 ul rod is definitely the way to go unless ur obsessed like me on a certain species. But what do I know. I have 3/4 gloomis imv gl3 s. But my favorite. Team diawa 4’6” tip to butt ul rod from 1992/3. In high school if was $80. I did some crazy shit to get that money. Sold a bunch of candy and basketball cards for that. And it’s still around and catching me up to 3/4lb crappie. They can build rods like this again but chose not too.

      Hahaha you and me both buddy. I can't justify quite that much yet. I will spend up to around $200, but anything over that feels a bit extreme. Ultralights don't really need to be more than $50 to catch fish. I am a believer in value-friendly fishing especially with light line.

    Is someone able to help me? I am finally starting to go fishing myself. I have been having a few problems, i am trying to cast 1/32oz jigs with a 2inch crappie minnow like online outdoorsman and I use a 5ft ugly stick gx2 ultralight with a shimano sienna 500 reel. I put 10lb power pro braid with 2lb fluoro leader. It didnt go very far so I decided to get a 7ft gx2 as I am a bank fisherman. Unfortunately my jig is still only going about 10-15yards max. I have even reduced my drag pretty heavily. What exactly am I doing wrong? Is my line too heavy? Thank you for your videos I love them.

    • @FishAnything
      @FishAnything  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sagar I’m sorry you’re experiencing issues! From the sounds of it you’ve got solid gear so it’s hard to say what’s causing the problem. I’m wondering if straight monofilament may increase your distance (2lb or 4lb if you need more strength). The other thing I’ll say is that I personally have more success with a size 1000 reel, but you’re 500 should still get fine distance. I’m sorry I don’t feel like much help. My gut tells me it’s the line because that’s usually the issue.

    • @SMaamri78
      @SMaamri78 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      15 yards is 45 feet. I’m not so sure I cast much farther, if at all, with my 6’ St Croix ultralight. Now, I typically use 1/60 oz jig with 2” gulp minnow or a panfish magnet jig. Sometimes I may use 1/32 oz. But I don’t get lots of distance with either one.

    • @saerto121
      @saerto121 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Interesting review. I'm not sure I personally could justify $400 for a rod that is targeted at what I would consider the "beginner species". But then again I am obsessed with bass; some people musky and pike, others salmon or striper. It makes sense that there are those out there who target trophy panfish. So really I think it's cool that St. Croix provides an offering for those who want the premium panfish option like every other species have.

    • @FishAnything
      @FishAnything  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I totally agree that it is unnecessary but I think it is good to benchmark how other rods compare. I wouldn't say panfish are really beginner species though - yes Bluegill can be, but they can also be an epic sportfish for serious anglers too. Let alone Crappie!
