I can see Beethoven spending weeks alone with his piano angrily composing this piece. He returns from his blind composing rage and takes a step back to calmly admire the finished script. Next to the sheet music sits a forlorn penny.
Every note is so clear. The dynamic on every note is precise. Kissin is like Glenn Gould in terms of precision, but I think Kissin has more power and strength in his performance.
I googled it, appears Anton schindler added the words.but why would a german assistant of beethoven add the words,"penny" instead of shilling or whatever the german penny value is or was.I also found out the original manuscript was incomplete, ANton diabelli finished it andmost likely Eric Hertsmann retitled the penny in 1949 post WW11.
adamaj On the contrary, Lang Lang is quite UNDERrated. Look at videos of him playing: The comments are all "He is terrible, Yundi Li was better",or "Its okay, but not enough emotion, listen to Kissin for a proper version"
Ollivander the Wand-Maker It depends. Lang lang's la campanella is different to Kissin's, Yundi Li's, Valentina's, and Cho Seong Jin's. Kissin's la campanella was in rhythm and it was fancy. Yundi Li was also fancy. Valentina's was aggressive but good. Cho Seong Jin's is super emotional. Every pianists do have different styles. Lang Lang uses exaggerated moves to impress the audience. Lang lang skill based not emotion based. And yes, I do agree he is an amazing pianist, but still, he is overrated.
cocococotube sorry, I didn't mean that in an offensive way, but it just made me chuckle. Have you tried to learn the piano/keyboard? It is a great hobby, very relaxing and energizing at the same time, I find. I can play a few simple pieces (Fur Elise, Moonlight Sonata, Bach's BWV926, Erik Satie's Gymnopedie No. 1) completely and to my satisfaction, but I'm self-taught and not performing for a living, so I wouldn't call myself a pianist, per se.
Don't be sorry at all.I did not take your comment in the offensive way. No, I haven't tried to play the piano. So you are plying the piano. I like a simple piece of work it is very beautiful and delicate. Do you play Chopin too? I envy you play the piano whenever you want. How did you learn playing the piano yourself?
KingDragonCat I don't know who you are, I don't know what you want, but I assure you I have a very particular set of skills, and I will find you, and get that penny back.
I love his ability to show Beethoven's rage through that short passage at 1:41 - 1:43. So beautiful. I love the way Kissin plays. I recently watched him play with Yuri Bashmet -and I, being a violist, was pleasantly surprised to see my idol working with Kissin like they were one voice .... together. It was a big change [for me] to hear Bashmet playing without Mikhail Muntian or his daughter Ksenia. I really love Kissin's encore pieces because he can really express himself without anything holding him back. I'm not a pianist so I can't really comment much on his chamber collaborations or concerto work, but they are all lovely too :)
Back in 2007, I watched this and at once fell in love with the song...I learned it, but never nearly as well as he played it. After watching this again, I remember how much I enjoyed the piece...I'm going to re learn it right now :)
aight buddy, i was paralyzed on the left side of my body, and i play piano almost everyday for 2 hrs, practicing on simple pieces to improve. unless you have a good reason on why you can't keep improving your skills then dont feel sad. My left hand sometimes just gets really stiff and stays in a locked position that i cant bend my fingers but does that stop me from practicing and and improving my skills nope, so come on Ngth, never quit
SAME! I can play extremely fast, but my left hand start to hurt and paralyze and this is the reason I'm not even gonna try learning this piece any time soon.

wow, never thought piano and classical music could sound so good. i used to think it's just loud pounding noise. But kissin is an exception. seems he is not only playing musical notes skillfully, more importantly, he is telling you an interesting story through the keyboard. his performance sounds so engaging and meaningful. he just has that magical mesmerizing power over his audience. I cannot think of any other contemporary musicians that could be as half good as he is.
This is superhuman, he plays so fast yet every note is crystal clear
XyX YxY bounce the hand.
He is indeed the very embodiment of gifted!
He made a few mistakes tho
keepray sure you heard them!
At what time did he make the few mistakes? Please tell me!
Yea for example there in the left hand
I like the way he calls out the next piece he is about to play. He keeps the audience informed.
Particularly for ignorant people...😕

Unfortunatelly Beethoven died before he finished writing this piece... But that was a good dream ;-)
He left it unfinished mate.
He found the penny so he didnt need to finish it.
I know he left it unfinished but this comes to mind whenever I hear it. :)
Over Enthusiastic Trekkie He died before it was finished.
I can’t believe how he played super fast and crystal clear and got all the notes right!!!!!😱

Well, a penny was worth a lot more back in beethoven's time I believe, inflation and all that.
Lol yes my friend
Wasn't it a shilling in Germany?Penny is Uncle Sam.
fadethetrade Actually, Beethoven (like many composers) didn't name his piece. The publishers slapped the name on there as a marketing ploy.
sounds right.penny was the key.no penny in germany.

Entirely subjective, I don't like Lang Lang's playstyle and I also don't like Argerich for that matter
If I were Kissin,I would be so happy everyday to play the piano. What a great life he has!
