The 3rd movement of the Moonlight Sonata is in my opinion the most incredible musical piece ever written.
It goes well in a hyper-caffeinated society that we currently live in. Urgent and rushed.
Check out Liszt we can all say for certain he was incredible, Mazeppa incoming

She is, by far, the best pianist I have ever seen in the face of the Earth. No other performance comes close to any of hers. Everything she plays is just effortlessly flawless. If you want to hear the best, just listen from her.
It is amazing how effortless she makes it look. Compare to Daniel Petrov who seems to play with every inch of his body and soul until he is pouring sweat

as a percussionist, I truly admire the separation between notes, incredibly even. you can hear the gap written between each note and she is doing it at such speed, the years and years of discipline required to achieve this level of perfection is truly noteworthy!

I don't think Valentina will ever know how much I look up to her performance of this. I've watched these three movements of her playing for almost 10 years. I have learned the first two movements because of her. No one else plays Beethoven with this beautiful passion.
Thomas Headley thanks that is true. It can be difficult I guess every one is different. Never thought music could lead to destruction as the first two movements of this piece singlehandedly kept me alive in some of my most darkest days. This music speaks to my core and every week if it was ALL I could do, I just learnt one bar. One by one. And then I could play it. It was my only source of happiness and beauty for a long time so I can’t really understand that frame of mind.
I learned Moonlight sonata bar by bar as a result of Valentina’s performance.
Don’t give up, Cleary Ellis! I put this aside for now, but will continue again when I’m in the right frame of mind 😉

@@Thvll Interesting piece you mention, the Chopin etude, it's actually the first video of Lisistza's that I ever watched some years ago which started my interest in her. It was stunning to me for many reasons, not the least of which is because I had never actually heard the piece before, but since having listened to many, many others play it, I can say it is one of the very best I have ever heard, probably just behind Pollini's performance.

This tempo so clearly brings out the hidden phrasing Beethoven so intentionally placed into every arpeggio and harmonic transition. She plays with such intentionality that it almost brings out new phrases and lines I don't hear in other interpretations.
First: this is my go to video when I want to show someone what “piano virtuoso” means. Performance is excellent.

How does she remember so much music in her head, plays it perfect and doesn’t get tired. Amazing
Music trains and educates our memory. We forget, even music. But memorizing this isn’t as impressive, to pianists, as her execution and expression. I just wish it was on a better piano.
After 2-3 years of training as a pianist you can remember 4-5 pages of A4 written music , later close to end years of secondary music school I could remember 10-12 pages. I think proffesional musicians can remember 40-50 sheets of music - like 1 hour of play - like Chopin concertos. What's interesting for first you read notes stem by stem , often with mistakes and start to memorize after 3 of 4 th of play of piece. Than it takes let's say 10-15 of repetitions (at first at slow tempo than faster) to record it consciously in memory. After you don't have to excercise it to memorize - AT last - you start to excercise it physically - speed, clarity and as the last thing you excercise articulation, verlocity changes and tempo . And whats interesting when you practice a speed and clarity - it goes from your conscious memory to muscles memory , and surprisingly at 100 th of repetition you DON'T ACTUALLY KNOW WHAT YOU PLAY - YOUR FINGERS ARE PLAYING. That's magical ... When I noticed that effect on exam , when I was getting nervous at thought I lost memory of part of piece. But fingers did have memory ...
