  • Miss part 1? - Watch it first: • Inductive Bible Study ...
How you ever wondered how to study the bible? This Branch Together video is the second in a series teaching us how to read with the Inductive method (the OIA method). In this video, Jenna Garrison walks us through her own study of Matthew 2.
At the end of each section, pause the video and follow the prompts on the screen to practice this way of reading the Bible. We are thankful for the care Intervarsity Christian Fellowship/USA and Lindsay Olesberg have taken to teach and produce some of the questions and methods we’ve used here. Get something out of the Bible! And have fun. There’s treasure waiting for you to uncover!

One thing I love about God is that His word helps us, even when it's years later.
A couple questions I would add to the list...
    1. How much were the gifts worth back then?
    2. Why were all the little children allowed to be killed?

Also what are the'hows' in your example?

Most Effective way that helped me a lot to understand and take things slowly to interpret and observe each verse and to catch a central idea. Thank you, Jenna, aided a lot to look at the verses from a deep perspective than to simply brush through from the surface. One thing that I realized was that even a simple line when observed could bring in more questions and curiosity to know more.

The bible is a book mostly written by men who never even met the people they wrote about (many years after). It is also heavily edited and censored by a church that had a power and politics agenda, eliminating around 14 books (the Apocrypha). In addition, there isn't just one Christian bible - there are at least three with different numbers of chapters. There exists no provable, fact-based evidence to support any of the supernatural (spiritual) events in it. Thus, it is pure human belief - a human emotion and dependent on as many human thoughts as there are humans. To believe without factual evidence is like saying a court case should be determined by only hearsay or a feeling. It's hard to think God wouldn't hold humans to a standard that they hold themselves.
ANYTHING supernatural or spiritual that is taken from the bible is hearsay, feelings, beliefs, hopes, and tales of imaginations, and not proven with evidence.

As the wise man being glad in heart about Jesus. priest scribes Jews with all the knowledge of the coming messiah and the word of God did nothing. The knowledge of the word isn’t enough for the light has come to out shine darkness; focus on the light and rejoice for Jesus Christ our lord, who has come to redeem and save us from our sins. Like the wise men let us travel to see and worship Jesus, let us be glad in him, let us pour out our gifts before the lord for he is light to our life.

Great video! Very helpful walkthrough- 2 questions: when you are observing, do you write everything you observe or only what you think will be helpful in unlocking the meaning? And I love marking and coloring like you are, but I struggle to keep it consistent... Do you have a system? I know these are not simple to answer - sorry! Thanks for the video!!!

    • @jennagarrison
      @jennagarrison 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Steven Shreyberg Hey! Great questions- if you wrote down only what you thought might be important, what you're doing is interpreting, before you're ready to interpret. During observation, you're not yet sure whats important, and your job is to collect as much as possible. So try to be as open to everything you're seeing! I don't always write things down, but circles, highlight, question, make notes and tally repeated words, on my paper.
2- i do have a system! Create your own. With repetition you'll develop a system that works for you. I pick a code and then use it consistently throughout a study and just in general. Once you have a method, it becomes super easy to jump into observation mode and really start to see stuff pop out. Here's what I do, but anything goes!
      -orange squiggly underline- action words
      -green underline: places
      -blue underline: time
      -yellow underline: people
      -purple: God, Jesus
      -purple crown: king, LORD references
      -red: commands
-full highlight, extra color: repeated words
It's worth every minute you put in- Jesus said "pay close attention.. the closer you listen, the more understanding you will be given--and you will receive even more" - mark 4:24

Jenna Garrison great answers! Really excited to get into this method. -funny, I studied the book of Ruth and it was incredible, God poured into me- was eating so well! Then the next book I tried studying was somehow not flowing for me AT ALL and I wasn't getting much so I started studying how to study the Bible and tried to get the flow again and get the method down, but only got overwhelmed with it and left it... (Been just doing SOAP and just reading for a while) but I'm realizing there's a big difference between devotional and study, so, I'm getting excited to study again. Will press. ANYHOW, this was very helpful and video was encouraging. Big thanks and God Bless :)

Hello don’t even know your name....I listened to your part 1 and now part 2,. I’ve been a Christian for a long time, I love His word and have recently began what I call the OIl method, it’s exactly how you teach except for Application, I use L for Life Application.... same principle,. I’m asking if you can list the questions you listed to get more out of the study but it was only on the screen for seconds,.

I was at a place where my sin was more valuable than God. I came to youtube looking for some programming knowledge until I came across a video about Esau and how he sold his birthright and it spoke to me. It was like God telling me, you are way off. Your heart is almost hardening. Never felt this afraid before and I felt inside me like He wanted me to really get back to reading scriptures and really devoting my time to the word; because I can write code 8-12hrs straight but I hardly have time for God.

I like doing things accordingly to a method and a plan. You used yellow for "who, green underline for "where", blue for "when", and orange squiggle underline for "action words". Do you also mark any other things? Such as What? or Why? or How?

What impacted me about this reading is how Joseph was quick to respond to God's leading.
I have found in my life, I can know it's God's voice and yet some times there are moments when I don't react right away and delay the journey.

Great job!! I just started studying using the inductive method and your lesson and explanation has helped me tremendously. I am trying to determine if I should go colored pens and highlighters or digital as you are using. Any inductive Bible study software suggestions?

With pandemic there are many looking for a small inductive study group via zoom. Start up one group n it will multiply....Geography not a barrier.
