I'm the commercial HVAC industry... pneumatic controls... no one ever drains anything. I put auto drains on mine but some guy shut it off. Over 15 gallons of water in a 30 gal tank.
    Good video sir!

Good point. I replaced air receivers on two old Joy rotary screw compressors. One a 72 model year, the other a 76. Both were original to the compressor. Both rusted through to the point that they were leaking air through the bottom.

Holy crap, they never drained out that thank at all! good job sharing it!

Even ran across air tanks that someone had actually welded patches on the bottom of a rusted out tank. People don’t realize the potential of stored compressed air, if it were to catostrophically fail!

I would recommend an automatic drain for this customer

Lloyd Haight I've seen 200 gallon tanks filled to the top with water in the past lol

Lloyd Haight air compressors in general are some of the most neglected piece of equipment nature of the beast unfortunately

benny , is it because of the case of out of sight out of mind ?

Lloyd Haight yeah pretty much or it's because "it hasn't broken yet so it must be fine" or others are just to cheap or don't have the funds to afford service or are just ignorant about the day to day things to do with their unit to keep it going

I drained a pancake compressor a few months ago that very little use. I don't know how there was room for any air! Of the 6 gallons, at least 2 was water.

I think you should probably sell that customer and automatic tank drain of some sort.
I've seen a lot of tanks with pinhole leaks in them with Cracks by the feet. overpressure causes air receivers to rupture typically mostly found on reciprocating compressors stuck or welded closed contacts and a faulty relief valve will cause that to happen almost every time
I've seen and 2 cases the same model type 30 Ingersoll Rand tank mounted unit with a ruptured tank
but never on a rotary screw system

ROTARYCOMPTECH I would put one on but all I can to do is recommend the management has to quote customer has to get it approved then a P.O. So it'll probably get done next service.

ROTARYCOMPTECH I've seen mostly piston units too rupture or crack tanks but I have seen plenty of rotary both screw and vans fill up tanks full of water I'm sure of it would sit in there long enough eventually it'll rust out

I once had a 150 horsepower kaeser compressor attached to a 1060 gallon receiver the compressor was short cycling
found the problem to be the air receiver about three quarters to two-thirds of the way full of condensate, it took about 15 minutes to drain it under full line pressure, if you think about it the tank is always wet, if you drain it it just does not have standing water in it, the next ruptured air receiver that you see take a close look at the bottom of the tank in all the cases I've seen there was not even enough rust to cause that kind of damage. welded or stuck contacts result in this issue on piston air compressors on rotary screw compressors they result in a sump tank fire

ROTARYCOMPTECH yeah totally agree we try and run our dryer setups before the tank to minimize moister in the tanks as much as possible

    • @rotarycomptech
      @rotarycomptech 7 ปีที่แล้ว

Benny CompTech the latest and greatest trend and compressed air systems is to sell the end-user two tanks a wet tank and a dry tank in that case there's not much you can do about the wet tank scenario
      just sayn

Just drained a ridiculous amount of water from my old pancake compressor under my work bench - brown sludge.
Wondering if I should just scrap it rather than risk an explosion....that moisture sat in their for well over a year. :(

mike_HVAC I would get rig of it!!! When it comes out like a brown sludge that's all the metal that has rusted inside the tank!!!

Frankie M. Ripped a huge whole in the wall and busted open air lines and drainage pipes and slight damage to the air dryer as well. it was a hell of a job to fix! OSHA was breathing down all our necks!! Was me installing the new compressor and tank a electrician redoing all the electrical and refrigeration tech doing the dryer and a plumber doing the drainage pipes was a interesting experience! To say the least lol

Dam I hear you bro I work with high pressure cylinders every day I've seen videos of when a cylinder ruptures they fly as far as 2 miles away 👍🏼✌️
