Chief, you and your D Battalion did great! Firewall or not, that whole damn block would have went if not for your department's and mutual aid's companies work... And you orchestrated the entire thing... Kudos!! Especially with very limited resources out of the chute.... You and your department have much to be proud for!

As a former volunteer firefighter of Squad 8 back in the 80's it is great to see the Harrisburg fire department still doing an outstanding job!! Great video of these men on the job!!
Our police are a big help to us at fires, occasionally the car is the traffic control and occasionally we are the traffic being controlled. We work through it and bust their chops and most of the time they are good about it. They also do a great job of getting these homes evacuated and areas cleared and information gathered. It's a team effort! Plus they know they really wanted to be firemen anyway. ;)
Our police are a huge help to us every day. Occasionally they get a car in the way. But occasionally we mess up their work as well. so together we work through it and try to do better next time.
Oh did that cop have it coming daring to park in front of a hydrant to get to scene 1st and just watch ! I didn't see you changing camera to that fireman by cop car. And he busts out one back passenger window then the other to string a hose thru. Firemen should just leave hose hooked up there if they leave before he gets back !
Great job Chief. I’m awestruck by your ability to maintain a command presence, accountability, evolving strategies, and even some task level work, and never losing your focus. Really exceptional work on this by you and all your men.
Thank you for the kind words. We work hard on coordinating our operations and working as a team. When everyone is where they are supposed to be, doing what they are supposed to be doing and communicating it takes a lot of pressure off of all of us!
Technology has been such a wonderful thing for fire response and fire science. I remember Our Lady of Angels fire just like it was yesterday and the amazing heroics of the times. Getting control of this rowhouses upper floor fire, above the fire wall was stellar. Big thank you to all Fire Fighters everywhere!
I remember that "Our Lady of Angels" school fire in Chicago. That fire was in December of 1958, and I was a kid of eleven years old. I was in the 5th grade. What hit me was that 93 children and 3 nuns (school teachers) were killed in that tragic fire. At that point in my life I was getting a better understanding of the world being a bigger place than my home in my neighborhood and my Grade School that I walked to every day. I remember talking to my dad about the Chicago fire (he was a career City of Harrisburg firefighter). I can't remember the exact words, but the time he gave me to try to explain what fire can do, and how to avoid smoke (staying low, etc.) and acting fast to escape the smoke, heat and fire. I just couldn't grasp how a school building could burn, and why the kids didn't run away. That's when I learned about the dangers of smoke, and being trapped, which was the "killer" in that Chicago fire. I do remember dad saying most of those children died from the smoke, before the flames of the fire got to them. I began to grow up in a hurry in the late 1950s and those whacky days in 1960s. By the end of the 1960s I began my college days, got drafted into the Army, became a specialist on Aircraft Parts for a Huey unit in South Vietnam. I had several very close calls with death, but I made it home in one piece. I came home, got a good job, got married, bought a home, and we had 2 wonderful kids. And in the late 1970s I was on hand to see my dad retire from his City Fire Department in Harrisburg. He was a happy man to have lived thru 24 years of the stress of dealing with the ugly results when people became victims of tragic fires.
My Chicago elementary school, Arnold, burned down a few months later in January 1959. I was in 8th grade. Lucky it was a Sunday night conflagaration and no people were in the building.

There was no formalized par over the radio on this incident. That said there were many face to face interactions with the members and officers in charge of sectors as the incident played out. I'm not saying there shouldn't have been, but we had an accountability working and after the video ends got some reinforcements at the command level that began managing other parts of the incident. The way we work isn't for everyone for sure, but just because there was no par over the radio does not mean that there was not accountability being addressed. Thank you for the feedback.
great job -being from the mid south , I get a blank look when I use terms like balloon construction etc to the younger guys. Great job knowing your district's construction and doing an actual 360 . as opposed to the windshield command that was in vogue (much to my frustration)
That type of construction must be a firefighters worst nightmare! The Chief is excellent at juggling about 500 balls at once. That stressed ME out! Great job!!
Hey there Phil!! These are much faster paced and adrenaline filled than bus videos aren’t they but I sure enjoy the endings of your videos much more than these. It’s sad to see folks lives get turned upside down in an instant with a fire. Hope your able to stay warm up there right now Phil, you guys have been having a tough time the past few weeks it sounds like, but hopefully it’s gonna break soon and better weather is around the corner. Looks like Scott’s even got a good bit of ice and snow in Tennessee which is uncommon to have that much in his area at one time. It’s been bad for a whole bunch of us this month for sure! Take care Phil, be safe up there buddy.
It's not always a perfect situation. But that said the most important safety issue at that moment was to get the main moved so there was egress for the men on the roof as they moved with the fire. Our aerial chauffeurs get dressed and go to work. I know other places may do it differently and that's fine for them. With our staffing and what we often have to accomplish with that staffing it's a trade off we accept. Who wouldn't love more staffing. But while we wait and or fight for that, the job still has to get done, the citizens will not accept, "if only" as an excuse.
Top notch video top notch training and top notch chief one of the best I have seen. Very good to have the pictures of the interior helpful in understanding what was going on .
Thank you, but your words are likely a little too aggressive though, we just try to put forth a solid effort. On this job we had a good day and as always it was based on the hard work of a lot of good firemen.
Impressive Incident Command! Excellent job by all, especially the Chief. Definitely a nightmare potential with those rowhouses but you guys did a helluva job!
Love seeing all the team work. Not just the firefighters, but even the police helping out as well. Not a fire fighter here, but military veteran and former law enforcement. Team work between agencies is always great to see. Not everyday you see a battalion chief on a ladder. Lol
Thank you! I like our team work as well. Our police and EMS are always willing to get in the mix. We don't play games when the chips are down. Its a great group of dedicated people serving HBG! Sometimes you have to do what you have to do to get the job done when it needs to be done. Our crews were committed and the guys needed the ladder to be moved as an egress point that was safer to get to. I have no problem making sure those guys are as safe as is possible. You know, when it needs done it needs done, doesn't matter who has to do it.
Im always fascinated with the SOPs and tactics of different departments…..especially with RowHomes since I’m from Philly…. Those structures are definitely an easy 75-100yrs old built to last until fire gets in the common cockloft or walls if there balloon construction…. Phenomenal job Chief!
More than just the fire was out of control - even the captain was reporting fire was 'under control'. Then this amazing Chief shows up, tells the captain if he thinks it's under control, he is looking at a different fire, LOL. The minute the chief takes over, everything gets sorted, and a plan was put into place. That guy needs a HUGE raise.
Thanks for the shots after the fire. I would like to see that on more videos. It gives a little better perspective of what was going on on the inside that can’t be seen from the outside.
I have a question. You pointed out to HPD that you had a firewall. What were you seeing to make that determination? I know nothing about firefighting so I’m curious. Thanks!
Every four houses there is a ridge that runs up the roof, you should be able to see it when you look down the row to the left. That ridge is the firewall sticking out through the roof. Not all firewalls do that and not all firewalls are made equal. Some are mostly there and are not tight allowing fire spread, some are in poor shape and in these old houses some of the mortar is breaking down and of course some of them have been breached for various reasons like running utilities ect. You can never just say oh there's a fire wall we're good. But if you get people in there and you 'support' the fire wall you can make a stand and stop the fire there. If the fire wall was good, like we had on the Dauphin St. fire, it does a good job all on its own. But we still had a crew with a hoseline in there monitoring the conditions.
New perspective into firefighting from a Chiefs point of view. Excellent strategy and use of resources prevented what could have been a major disaster. Job well done.
I am a new subscriber and I am so impressed! Thank you for letting me see exactly what you Hero’s accomplish and letting me in, to appreciate everything you do, and the lives and property you save! Thank you Sirs! Love from Md.
Great perspective from the helmet camera. Chief did a great job. What this shows best is the effect of the budget cuts and manpower reduction. They're lucky they haven't had more casualties from running this shor.
We have more staffing currently than we have had in the last 20 years. The chief is consistently working to upgrade our staffing. But at the street level, the job still must get done and the brothers and sisters do a great job of making that happen.
Thank you. One thing I love about our City is that the emergency service work hard and they work together. Our police are always willing to give a hand when it comes down to these incidents. Ans they certainly don't get the credit they deserve for the daily beat down they receive.
@Brian Bastinelli nice job on the 360,had a good friend that was a Harrisburg B.C. .. His name was Ron Reed I’m sure it’s before your time since I’ve been retired from P.F.D. Local 22 for 7 years but he hung out out my station while his daughter was taking a test for college back in 2001. We remained friends for about 15 years afterwards but haven’t received a return Christmas card for a while. Stay safe and I hope Ron is good!
Thank you. Chief Reed was my first Battalion Chief when I came on the job. He was one of the best Chief's I've ever worked for. I've not talked to him in a bit, but I am going to reach out to him this week.
Outstanding job by the Bureau of Fire and Chief Bastinelli!!! Nothing more can be said about Chief Enterline and his trust in his command staff, he shows up, checks in, and goes and does his thing, NOT "hey i'm the chief and i'm here to take over"
Interestingly enough we actually took this job. I work for a restoration construction company off of derry Street, I wasn't there for the es but i find it interesting that there is footage of a house that we are doing the repairs on.
Thank you. We work really hard on being prepared to carry out the job. We know what we are up against and that no matter how many of us there are, the citizens depend on us getting the job done.
Outstanding job by the FD here. Judging by the damage photos it shows the professionalism of the members that this was held at 2 alarms with no injuries.
Anybody ever notice that the fire departments are the most efficient agencies of any city or town, large and small? I always compliment the firefighters in my town when I happen to be at the scene of a fire.
Really enjoying these. I'm not sure why they were recommended by the TH-cam auto generator (or whatever the proper name is), but I'm happy to watch and put a like.-GSH
Thank you, we have a lot to do with the little that we have. All of the crews know that and work very hard to get the job done as efficiently as we can. But it's all based on their hard work.
Thank you. I like to give the crews the opportunity to work, but I also don't want them to take too much of a beating. There are days when you just need more resources to get the task accomplished.
@@rob.o.b Initial 2 engines, 2 trucks. 1st alarm fill out 1 engine, 1 heavy rescue, 1 air unit. 2nd alarm 2 engines, 2 trucks,1 rescue, then we had two recall engines as well. Roughly 41 personnel in total.
Sure thing. Give me a little time and I get something together. We are still evolving that set up but I will go over where we are currently at. Great idea!
Good question. The Knee wall is not really specific to row houses but is specific to houses with peaked roofs. The peaked roof created a triangle shaped top floor. The knee wall serves to purposes, one is roof support as it goes from the bottom of the roof to the floor. It is also used to 'square' off a room making it a more inhabitable space. Generally the space behind a knee wall is unfinished and open to other voids in the construction allowing for rapid fire spread. Some people have put floors I that area and doors in the walls and made them into storage areas.
Great video Chief! Lot of learning in here. Aside from that, do you happen to know where your FF at 13:50 got their Jean jacket from? Any reccomendations? I've been looking for a good one for forever! Thanks!
Being smart as you can and being cautiously aggressive, coupled with good communications and coordination will set the stage, then it's hard back breaking work that wins the day.
Well , that was a runner of a fire . These old building have so many changes and dry , the devil knows the ways ! After pictures also tell how it ran. Thank you
This fire was truly a structure fire. The fire would have eventually entered the living spaces but upon our arrival it had a good hold of the voids and as you said was moving quickly through them. They crews worked hard, got after it quickly and got ahead of it.
Just found your channel tonight. You guys do amazing job. I have so much respect and appreciate everything firemen do. I do have a question. I use to live in a 3 story apartment building we had several fires while I was there. How did you know there was a firewall. From the outside?
Fantastic ivew of a fireground.. amazing presence.. even when the situation was deteriorating quickly, command kept order and control of the crews.. great save!!!!
@@MisterTwister55 there also always seems to be a playback speed issue, so good at the beginning doesn't mean good in two min. So I have to slice sections out to realign the sound if that makes sense.
@@brianbastinelli Yup and if I remember correctly, there's a way in Premiere to tell sync it at two points and the program will fill in between. I have a video using this radio at a pistol range and I had to go back and sync it up to my voice. Not as easy as clapping in front of a camera and syncing. It sounds like you're recording from the station with a radio set for priority scan? I hear the beeps. If you ever need audio, let me know. I have a computer that records every non encrypted talkgroup 24/7.
At the begining when the first interior crew said they used the can and had the fire under control, I was thinking, what building are you in? Heavy brown smoke from the eves and roofline. Something was still rolling pretty good inside.
On their arrival there was light smoke on the A side and the reporting party, unaware of the actual location of the fire, took them to her house where the fire was extending via the void space.
Keep in mind these houses are over a hundred years old and are at the heart of a city that has been economically strapped since the 70's. And that they are inhabited by people and families who are just trying to make it to tomorrow. The blame for the long neglect of these homes is directly related to the level of ignorance and level of greed that many of the absentee slumlords have. They are the people living in beautiful neighborhoods in cities and states far away from Harrisburg taking advantage of people who do not have the means to immediately improve their situations. What we see happen day in and day out at the hands many of these landlords is disgusting.
These row house fires must mske the firefighters nervous. You can loose a whole block. There were fires in two separate brick doubles in my neighborhood recently and there was considerable damage to one side and not the other in both cases. Brick firewalls and the great work of the Hsgerstown MD fire department saved both houses and they are being repaired.

@@brianbastinelli Brian. I worked under Commissioner Quinn in Chicago in the 60s and yes you did a great job.
Well thank you, I appreciate the kind words.
@@brianbastinelli 👍
I love the onfo in the description. Really helps to understand your attack of the fire.
Thank you! I try to set it up so we can all learn from the videos.
GREAT video!! Chief 7 did a awesome job utilizing the NIMS Command system!
Impressive Incident Command! Excellent job by all, especially the Chief. Definitely a nightmare potential with those rowhouses but you guys did a helluva job!
Thank you, we appreciate your kind words.
Great going Brian. Your all doing great. Thank you for taking us along.
Thank you. The whole team works very hard to provide the best service we can to the city!
Give this man a huge raise…. That’s atleast a 3 BN chief scene fire. Great work
This was really interesting, Great job Chief and crew. Thank you for sharing!
Thank you.
Thank you.
I am a new subscriber and I am so impressed!
Thank you for letting me see exactly what you Hero’s accomplish and letting me in, to appreciate everything you do, and the lives and property you save!
Thank you Sirs!
Love from Md.
Thank you so much!
@@brianbastinelli God bless you all.
Great Work to all 1st responders. Police helping Firefights was the best. Once again, Great work to all
Nothing more can be said about Chief Enterline and his trust in his command staff, he shows up, checks in, and goes and does his thing, NOT "hey i'm the chief and i'm here to take over"
Thank you.
Interestingly enough we actually took this job. I work for a restoration construction company off of derry Street, I wasn't there for the es but i find it interesting that there is footage of a house that we are doing the repairs on.
Great work chief ... totally in control even took the time to move the aerial when it was called to be moved .
Thanks, we do what we can and we try to help each other out when its needed as well.
Great job!!! Props to you for managing it!
I’m impressed on how these guys get so much done with little resources
THANKS TO ALL THE 1ST RESPONDERS
Those still photos told the story. Fire didn't look so bad from 'our' angle, great job.
Great job don't know how you guys only ride 3 on a truck up their but you guys get it done
Really enjoying these. I'm not sure why they were recommended by the TH-cam auto generator (or whatever the proper name is), but I'm happy to watch and put a like.-GSH
Thank you for taking the time to watch and for the feedback. Those algorithms are strange some times!
@@brianbastinelli that was the word I was looking for. Great videos
HFD did a great job! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching!
I have watched a couple of Harrisburg FD jobs..Impressive command with limited manpower...MUCH RESPECT
Thank you, we have a lot to do with the little that we have. All of the crews know that and work very hard to get the job done as efficiently as we can. But it's all based on their hard work.
“Based on the conditions on the exterior im not sure you have it contained”🤣🤣
I was a fire dispatcher for 20 years. Great job.
Great job Chief - good call mustering additional resources quickly.
Thank you. I like to give the crews the opportunity to work, but I also don't want them to take too much of a beating. There are days when you just need more resources to get the task accomplished.
Nice work Cheif, calm...level-headed leadership right here. You and the companies did a jam up job!
Thank you, appreciate the kind words. The companies did great which makes everything else easy.
@@brianbastinelli how many total companies?
@@rob.o.b Initial 2 engines, 2 trucks. 1st alarm fill out 1 engine, 1 heavy rescue, 1 air unit. 2nd alarm 2 engines, 2 trucks,1 rescue, then we had two recall engines as well. Roughly 41 personnel in total.
ANOTHER GREAT JOB by the Harrisburg PA fire department! You guys are AWESOME!
Thank you.
Chief, can you please do a review of your command board and how it’s set up?
Sure thing. Give me a little time and I get something together. We are still evolving that set up but I will go over where we are currently at. Great idea!
Awesome video chief really enjoyed!
Thank you, glad to hear it!
Was wondering what purpose the knee wall provides. There are no row houses where I'm from thankfully for firefighters. Just a construction question.
Awesome Job Chief !!!! And great video!!!
Thank you glad you enjoyed it! It was brought to you by hard work and great firemen! They busted their humps to get the upper hand here.
Thank u for sharing pictures of the after the fire
Gracias 🙏 por el excelente trabajo
De nada, gracias por las amables palabras.
Great video Chief! Lot of learning in here. Aside from that, do you happen to know where your FF at 13:50 got their Jean jacket from? Any reccomendations? I've been looking for a good one for forever! Thanks!
Thank you. Glad you find it valuable. That coat is on our clothing allotment. I believe it is the Dickies Denim Work Jacket #DK-3494.
Wow ! So good to watch, nice skils, nice leadership Nice footage, thanks for posting! Stay awesome chief!
Glad you enjoyed!
Smart Aggressive Command means Smart Aggressive Firefighting. This is it!
We always got your back fired department. Great job.
Thank you! Everyone worked hard!
Excellent job syncing the video up with the audio delayed radio recording.
Thank you, That can be a real pain in the butt.
@@brianbastinelli As a radio guy and a video guy, I noticed and I appreciated. lol good work
@@MisterTwister55 there also always seems to be a playback speed issue, so good at the beginning doesn't mean good in two min.
Just watching all the balls you had in the air is inspiring when you consider I can't even find my eye glasses when I set them down! Excellant video.
what camera are you using on your helmet?
Go Pro Hero 9 Black
Man you really know what you are doing. I really miss volunteering for Clay station 1.
Appreciate you for doing this...
At the begining when the first interior crew said they used the can and had the fire under control, I was thinking, what building are you in? Heavy brown smoke from the eves and roofline. Something was still rolling pretty good inside.
On their arrival there was light smoke on the A side and the reporting party, unaware of the actual location of the fire, took them to her house where the fire was extending via the void space.
great job done. WOW awesome suppression and ICS.
Thank you!
great job directing personnel. it is hard to be in charge staying cool calm and collected, being pulled in 12 directions.
Thank you. It sure can be!!
Oh God what were they thinking way back when those homes were built? I couldn’t see myself living in such a dive even when they were brand new.
Is there a video of the fire on 17th and Paxton behind the tire shop?
I'm sorry I was not working that day. I don't have any video from that fire.
Thank you
Terima kasih atas penjelasannya Gbu
Is that drone footage from the air?
I'm not sure, I think it was from the news station.
Great video chief
Thank you.
Excellent work on this job.
Thank you! Every one worked hard!!
great job chief as always,. Knee walls are the devil...
Yes, yes they are.
What company is wagon 3 ?? Tools??equipment ???
They are an engine company.
It’s a hold over name from days gone by.
Great videos learned a lot from the chief keep up the great work.
What a great job, your great with your men. Thank you
Thank you, I appreciate that. We all try to to our best.
Fantastic video...great job guys!
Thank you.
Also how do I get one of those Harrisburg Fire stocking caps? I'll send ya a UFD one.
I'm going to have to see, I am not sure if they are on our allotment or if it was a special order. I don't think its something we have all the time though.
Should make that cop an aide.
Amazing perspective!
