  • On 11DEC20 Harrisburg Fire D Battalion members responded to box area 1-5 for a reported basement fire. Enroute they were advised that the fire could be in the basement or the kitchen. In reality it was in both, it was a fire that started in the kitchen in the basement apartment.
    The video is from the first arriving BC's perspective.

    Good to see a senior Officer (Chief 7) get right on the fireground, survey and communicate directly with crew and keep inspecting all faces of the building until fire is reported out, then detailing crews after face to face discussion with dealing with the pipe chase.
    So many chiefs just want to sit in their air-conditioned vehicles and direct everything from the comfort of the front seat of their vehicle.
    And I do have Fire experience, rural brigades and at group officer level running fires with upto 12-14 brigades/appliances.
    All in all a great video and controlled operation on the fireground Brian!

      Thank you for your reply and for checking out the video. I don't have a problem with someone staying in the buggy to run command IF there are enough officers on the scene to cover what needs to be done. That said, I wouldn't necessarily call the person in the buggy 'command' I think when you remove yourself from the incident in that way, you just become a resource coordinator. I think the officers running as 'operations' or sectors really take over in making the decisions. But if it works for them, ok. This is what works for us. However, I would love to have more officers on the incident to cover sectors, have more eyes on the building and run a better accountability. Sometimes I get that, most times I don't. But we still have a job to do, so we figure out a way and do the best we can with what we have. And believe me, I am very aware of the potential consequences of that situation.

    I love the term/reason for calling engines wagons. Here in NY some guys will say back in the barn referring to when we had horse drawn pumpers that were parked in barns. Like the professionalism from all this chief. Nice video and footage

    Harrisburg is fast with water. I have watched hundreds of videos and am surprised at how slow some departments are with water. Good thinking looking at pipe chase.
    Videographer...any way you can stop the echo? It renders some exchanges inaudible. Great videos.

    • @brianbastinelli

      The guys work hard at being efficient and effective.
      The echo comes from the mismatch of the audio recording from the scanner feed and the live audio from the camera. Because I use an ear piece if I just play the live audio you only hear half of the conversation. The trade off (echo) comes when you try to match it up. It doesn't the speeds are just a little different If you match it exactly by the time you get a minute or two later its completely off. So for whatever reason when you line it up the way I do you get the echo but it stays in sync. I'm not an audio engineer so if someone knows a better way, id certainly love to know it!

    • @brianbastinelli
      @brianbastinelli  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thank you for your feedback. We don't. However, we do work closely with our police department to ascertain who the occupants are and if they can be accounted for. Our firefighters on the search assignment conduct primary and secondary searches on all fires and report back as they are completed or find something. We do also pass along information to them about who may or may not be in the building, because as I'm sure you know, that information is vital as well.

      Thank you. Everyone does it a little differently but you have to get the leather to soften up a little bit to make it pliable, that is generally done with heat. They you shape it and let it cool.

    Did you ever ascertain a cause?
    And did you ever find a gas meter? In some places I’ve lived they’re located on the property line perimeter instead of next to the house...I guess to make it easier for a walking person to read multiple meters.

    • @brianbastinelli
      @brianbastinelli  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Cause is under investigation. The gas meters in our town are mostly in the basements. However the gas utility has been on a several year program to remove them from the basements and place them on side A. Also not all houses in the city are on gas.

      @@williamthurmond4940 I know right!?! But they are working on getting them all moved outside. Interestingly enough we go on more gas leak calls now than ever before. And its because the meters have been moved outside. People are not accustomed to hearing them operate or that they have bleeder valves on them that burp off extra pressure now and then. So we get a lot of calls for an odor of gas and hissing at the meter. But, its still better than having them inside the house!!! Thank you for your feedback we work hard to be as functional as we can be.

    Why are some engines called Wagons?

    • @brianbastinelli
      @brianbastinelli  3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      In the horse drawn days there were steamers (engines) and hose wagons. In HBG there were both. We still have engines on paper, they are our reserve rigs and in theory could be staffed. Our front line engines are called Wagons. It is simply a hold over from our history. There were some larger cities on the east coast that ran two piece houses and one was the engine and one was the wagon. Again just a hold over form our past.

    • @ritirons2726
      @ritirons2726 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have to respectfully disagree with you.
      The smoke we see is lazy, fairly slow moving, and light in color.
      Flashover indicative smoke is dense, dark grey/black, pressurized, and violent smoke.
      Lazy, light colored, uniform smoke emanating from multiple locations is cooler smoke and distant from the fire location or is not exposed directly to the fire, therefore resulting in cooler smoke.
      Keep in mind flashover is a thermal driven event.
      The members appeared to have had water on the fire quickly, therefore cooling the overall area and smoke.
      Quickly reducing overall temperatures of the smoke and fire gasses as well as extinguishing the actual burning material is the fastest way to prevent a flashover which it’s seems like they accomplished.
