26JUN20 1300 Blk Vernon St

This is a fire where, secondary to a domestic dispute, a man lit several fires in the home and then jumped from the 3rd story window to the porch roof and from there to the ground before he fled the scene.
Initial reports directly from citizens involved stated a woman was on the second story, in the bedroom, on the floor and was on fire. Crews were sent to search but as you will hear, citizens came back and said she was in fact not home but at work and they had just spoken to her on the phone.
Crews made quick work of this fire by following SOPs, coordinating their actions, and carrying out their duties in an efficient manner.
Squad 8, Tower 1, Wagon 4, Truck 2, Wagon 3, Chief 7, Chief 1, Chief 2, Rescue 69, Air 13, Lifeteam EMS, HPD. D Battalion working.

Pretty impressive knockdown, went from rolling to just barely smoking in a few short minutes. I’ve seen departments that wouldn’t even had a line charged in that time.

@@sweenburg I know you need to get inside ASAP but while your interior crew is getting sorted knock the fire back from outside if it has vented like that, it makes life far easier and safer. The longer you leave the fire the worse it is for everyone.

@@andyoxleyonhistravels you can push the fire back in on any victims. You can cause steam burns to anyone inside. It’s the same reason you don’t do an exterior attack when FF’s are in the building.

@@FloridaCatholicGuy When it's flashed like that any victims in that vicinity are dead. You communicate with interior crews so you know where they are. It's far easier and safer to hit it from outside if you can when it's vented and makes life easier when you do send interior crews in. In 25 years I never saw 1 victim with steam burns but loads who died from smoke inhalation or were burned to death.

I saw a video, where a firetruck (Tanker) had a water canon on top and could start putting out the fire directly through the window after arriving. Would have helped a lot in this case.

We don not use tankers in our city because we have a water supply system with hydrants. Our engines also have deck guns, we did not elect to utilize it on this fire as we were able to access the inside and our priority was rescue and support of that operation. Water though the window in this car would have complicated that effort.
