CAUTION: Forcing the throttle plate open with your hands (manually) is not recommended. You risk ruining the electronic throttle timing. Also, when spraying the cleaner, try standing up the TB with the black electronic part at the top. You don’t want fluid seeping back into the electronics. Be generous with your spray cleaner. The less you physically touch it, the better, because you minimize potential damage. (Yes you can use a brush of some kind to help remove the sediment.) If you find that your car goes into high rev idle after cleaning, try the idle relearn procedure: Disconnect battery for 10 min. Reconnect battery. Start the car and let it run for 20 min. Then switch on the AC and let it run for another 15-20 min. Then drive it around the block.

How do you recommend opening the throttle plate Instead of forcing it open with your hands?
I’m planning to do this to my Mazda 3 as well in hope to fix the rough idle.

@@TACOMANZOFFICIAL Great question! One of the best techniques I've learned was from a Japanese Mechanic who uses a long, thin paintbrush with medium thickness bristles. Not this exact one but anything like this: tinyurl.com/3spdum7f. You then spray throttle body cleaner and the swirl with paintbrush, over and over again, both sides, until clean. The bristles of the brush will reach through the opening crack without forcing the plate open.

Thanks for this video. 2012 Mazda 3 manual 110,000 miles. RPMs were bouncing when coming to stop but would then settle, cold mornings were worse. Followed your video (lost about a pint of antifreeze, make sure it doesn't squirt into the engine) and also cleaned MAF. RPMs were too high afterwards, car was pulling me. Realized I needed to do relearn procedure. After that was complete it feels fresh again, smooth idle at 650rpm, no bounce. $$$ saved plus sense of accomplishment = priceless.

The carbon build up will lead to a idling issue and your car could possibly run too rich of a fuel mixture trying to compensate for the valve essentially being stuck too far open. A good sign of it happening before a code gets thrown is your water temp sensor showing an abnormally long time for the car to warm up. Poor fuel economy will result and a check engine error code P050A (idle air control valve) which for these motors is incorporated into the throttle body as opposed to a separate part. It can also cause what is called a "hunting" idle, where it has too low of an idle ususally around 500 rpms raising and lowering 50-100 rpm instead holding steady. The severity of the rpms fluctuating can vary but generally if it's just above stalling and doesn't sit still a dirty throttle body and improperly reset computer is the cause.
To add to that an excessively dirty throttle body COULD be a sign of a failing catalytic convertor or an exhaust related problem not allowing proper amount of flow through the exhaust system to pull a vacuum on the cylinders, just something to check.
Disconnnecting the battery for any reason, the battery dying and being recharged, even manipulating the throttle body valve by hand can throw off the computers stored parameters to some degree and potentially affect the idling or even shift points in an automatic transmission.
Generally though if your battery were to die or be disconnected, and assuming your TB (throttle body) isn't too dirty, the next time you allow the car to idle for more than ten minutes or so along with just driving it will usually be enough to allow the computer to relearn what it needs to.
The link below is for ford motors, which is what alot of Mazdas have for motors, not sure on the years but if it says "FoMo Co" then its a Ford/Mazda.
