    I had a similar problem. Although the rubber wheel wasn't slipping, the scrolling action was random. Following this guide I was able to take the mouse apart, clean everything up and, on reassembly, it's working properly again. There's one point I'd like to make: when you've removed the circuit board, there's nothing holding the on-off switch in place, so don't lose it - I nearly did!

    You're a smart guy with great attention to detail. just a quick tip, you can wipe off superglue quickly before it dries with kitchen towel or when it dries to a white foam it sands off really easily. and also if you boil the rubber fitting in water it will shrink back to normal size.

    When you do a teardown of anything, it's always helpful to show the pcb and components. This is the only reason I watched this video, as I'm just looking for the microswitch package size -- the clicking noise is driving me bonkers. I'm sure others will definitely appreciate the effort you made though.

    I was inspired by your efforts! I could not get my case off so I jammed a toothpick in the crack around the mouse wheel and it had all kinds of fuzz and dirt there around the wheel that I could pick out carefully without snapping the cover. Now my wheel works!

    Thank you for showing this. This is exactly what I need to do with a wired "Microsoft Comfort Mouse 4500", which is a damn good mouse. But, mine will let you scroll down easily, but it starts to not receive signals as you want to scroll up. Very frustrating. So, I sure hope that I can find the screws. Rest of the repair doesn't look that bad.

    Finding the hidden screws made all the difference. The wheel can be taken taken out without disassembling anything. Just lift out the left side carefully and it goes back in quite easily. The rubber tyre can be removed and refitted on the axle with a bit of rubber glue.

    Thank you for this very useful video. I followed your instructions but the wheel scroll didn't still work. I found out that the problem, in my case, was with the little pin like end of the scroll wheel shaft assembly. This pin end of the assembly is inserted into the potentiometer hole so the when you turn the wheel, the pin end in turn turns the potentiometer. I found that the pin end on the shaft had worn out some causing the potentiometer wheel to slip. I solved this problem by dipping the pin end of the wheel shaft in some glue and inserting that into the bearing hole in the potentiometer. Since now the pin is glued on to the potentiometer, is no longer slips. See the picture at 10:38 minutes in the video above that shows the pin end on the shaft I am talking about. At 4:38 , you can see the potentiometer at the top of the wheel assembly.

  • @csimring

    I had the same problem. Before you buy a star drive to take this apart consider trying what I did: take a cotton swab and dip both ends in alcohol. Gently lift the rubber on the wheel and slide a moistened swab underneath, between the rubber and the wheel it rests on. Release the rubber and slowly rotate the swab which then turns both the wheel and the rubber. After one cycle of that I reversed the swab so the unused tip was sandwiched between the rubber and the wheel and I held the swab in place while I pinched-pulled the rubber, forcing it over the swab and repeated until I made another full cycle. Mouse now works fine.

    • @UltimateDIY
      @UltimateDIY  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      +csimring that is the first stage. The rubber will get looser over time and that will not be enough. But for some maybe it's enough for the time being.

  • @ObservingLibertarian
    @ObservingLibertarian 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I had the same problem of the scroll wheel not relaying commands: however the problem in mine wasn't the wheel itself but rather the small point which goes into the adjacent bracket. The ball point was no longer rotating the bracket it fits into - because that's the part which actually relays the scroll command. If that bracket doesn't rotate when you spin the wheel: it doesn't matter how well attached the rubber is to the wheel. So what I did was use a razor blade to cut a very very small sliver of rubber off of my mouse pad, lay that atop the hole which the mouse wheel's ball point fits into: then put in the ball point so the sliver of rubber would be wedged between the ball point and the bracket the ball point fits into. Now when I rotate the mouse wheel: it also spins the bracket that it fits into and thus sends the scroll commands properly.
    So while my issue wasn't exactly the same as seen in this video: this video's instruction *did* point me in the correct direction in order to determine the actual problem and I was able to fix it. So thank you Ultimate DIY
    - you saved me $50 on a new mouse.

    Somehow I don;t think glueing the rubber wheel was what fixed it. there's little or no slippage there. what probaly cured it was cleaning the fine end of the spindle, the part that goes in to the potentiometer. Clean that up, simply by wiping it down with a cloth etc. (I used my fingers). put it all back together...all good. Anyway, thanks for showing how to take it apart.

      So you took off all the low friction pads and there are no more screws? Maybe you just have some strong clips then.

      Screws can be sometimes hidden under the slip pads from the corners.

    I have a mouse, and when i scroll it won't scroll on my computer... And i wanna fix it but i dont wanna break my mouse (not wireless )

    • @UltimateDIY
      @UltimateDIY  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most likely it's the same problem presented in this video.
      In my opinion your mouse is already broken, but if you really do not know how to do this kind of repairs, then maybe it's better to have someone else fix it for you.
