    I was the director of technical operations for Starstruck Studios in Nashville when it first opened in '96... as Dann was winding down his studio career and beginning his production career (by producing an album for Megadeth! Just before then, Dann came into the studio to do some guitar parts for a Reba album and some of the things that he did with guitar were other-worldly... completely outside the realms of what most humans could or would be able to do. Yeah... he's SUCH an underrated, unsung guitar hero. One thing he told me about Giant was that they had just released their second album when Nirvana Nevermind was released. He said when he heard that record, he knew that Giant was finished. The best thing about Dann, besides his musicianship, is that he is truly a very great man as well!!
    By the way... Dann also talked about working with Mutt on Shania's album... Mutt asked Dann (as well as all of the musicians hired to play on the album) to bring EVERY guitar and amp he had. He said he pulled up to the studio in a U-Haul truck. Apparently they spent about three weeks or more just looking for sounds for the different song styles.

    along with Lukather, Landau, and Paul Jackson Jr, Dann was one of the most prolific session players in the 1980s. Some of the tastiest , and a few well known, guitar solos in the 1980s, he did.

    First heard him live in the early 80s when a band I was with was on a festival bill with the band, White Heart, that he and his drummer brother were in. Had a lot of Luke and Landau in his bag, but also had his own spin. The Huff family was well known in the Nashville scene because huis dad was a successful arranger. Having an arranger for a father taught him to listen with much bigger ears than just as a guitarist. After his LA years, he came back to Nashville and did extremely well as a producer.

    • @VertexEffectsInc
      @VertexEffectsInc  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      For sure...I think he could bring the virtuosic playing of a Luke to solos, the ambience of Landau's cleans, and the funk of a Paul Jackson all in one.

    Jason thank you for recognizing Dan Huff. I remember Dan the most from the CCM side of music with bands like White Heart and then his studio work so many CCM albums like with Michael W. Smith. His high gain but mostly clean tones in guitar ballad leads still gives me chills when I hear them. He had the nack for making a guitar ballad scream without over using distortion to the point of too much fizz. Unbelievable talent in both guitar and then as a producer.

    This is Dann Huff on Right Out Of My Head by Boz Scaggs. He plays an incredibly melodic and yet ripping guitar solo and I think we hear him on the chorused clean parts. Luke is also credited. I think Luke would be on rhythm guitar here. Dann is also credited as composer on this track. th-cam.com/video/0x5-H3-ndFs/w-d-xo.html

    Always been one of my favorites and a nice guy too! As a young guitarist growing up in Nashville, I talked to Dann when I was around 13 about what it's like to do studio work. He was my 'guitar hero' and epitomized the best of both worlds between Nashville & LA players. I remember asking him about all the extensive gear that session guitarists were bringing for their work because it all seemed out of reach - he said: all this gear is necessary, but none of it's necessary. In other words, most great musicians can make great music with minimal gear. It's really about learning to think in terms of parts and how to craft an overall sound ... and to not just approach everything like a guitar player in terms of how we think of the fretboard but to think more like an arranger and how your part & sound fits into the whole.

If you're not familiar with his earliest stuff (1982-ish) here's one of if not the first music video he was in. It goes without saying, he played guitars on, and brother David played drums on. This is off the bands 2nd album from 1984. The first album was self titled and released in 1982. th-cam.com/video/5a38v-zCj8Y/w-d-xo.htmlsi=Gw314ApybGLMDF4U
