Got a chance to meet Dann at United Sound Systems in Detroit back in the 90's when he was with Giant. A&M had a listening party and I was the engineer assigned to the session. We had never heard of Giant, so we tripped out when they brought their equipment in and we saw flight cases with "Dann Huff" stenciled on the sides. We got a chance to sit and talk with him and ask him about the L.A. session scene. He was a wealth of information and was one of the nicest people you could ever meet!
No, he’s not underrated. He is HIGHLY rated in the studio world. Everyone knows him in the industry. He chooses to hide in the shadows as a studio musician.
@@davidmerlin3344He means underrated as in the masses have never heard of him. Everyone talks about Clapton, Page, EVH and SRV but the average person has never heard of guitar wizards like Dan Huff, Tim Pierce and Paul Jackson Jr. Another guy worth mentioning is Bruce Gaitsch who not only played on alot of Cetera’s songs but Richard Marx and Madonna’s as well.
Dann is such a down to earth person. I started listening to him back in the Whiteheart days. After he got to L.A, he eventually used Kasha preamps and Schecter guitars. This was around the "Giant" years. I had some questions about his rig, and wrote a letter to him through Schecter. I included my phone number. One day the phone rang, and my wife said it was Dann Huff. I couldn't believe it, I thought that a friend was messing with me. Anyway, it was him and we chatted for a bit. I'll never forget his kindness. I ran into him at a NAMM Show a few years later. One of the NAMM concerts was Giant! What a show. Thank you for having him as a guest.

Dann has always been one of favourites but to hear him go through his parts is awesome! How Dann and Luke and Landau came up with such wicked parts that really make the record for me. The glue that holds it all together. So creative. More Dann! Loving this!
For those that don’t know, Dan Huff is now arguably the biggest producer in Nashville - Keith Urban, Brooks & Dunn, Thomas Rhett, Rascal Flatts, Lady A, Josh Groban, Martina McBride, Kid Rock, Doobie Brothers, Kenny Rogers, Trace Adkins, Dolly Parton, Megadeth, LeAnn Rimes, Taylor Swift, Lionel Richie, Kelly Clarkson, Bon Jovi, Carrie Underwood, etc.
Those guys really knew how to build up a song piece by piece. No arpeggiators, it all came right out of their heads and they created timeless high quality tracks that can be enjoyed forever and ever. Big respect to all those heroes and thanks god that i grew up in the 70/80s.
What a musician and seemingly lovely guy. It’s so refreshing and cool to hear a mature, tasteful, top-flight producer and session legend say “I just wanted to play a lead on every song”. He knows we all know that you play what’s right for the song, so he doesn’t have to say it again. The honesty of a guitar ripper is still there. Dann Huff rules.
Mason, thank you for bringing these interviews! Wonderful content with beautiful lighting and sound. The joy on your face was priceless while he was playing "Glory of Love."
I'm so glad to live in a time where we can watch long form videos on amazing musicians, that are rightfully getting celebrated for their contribution to music. Amazing musicians and professionals perfectly serving the songs, a tradition that's been lost in the pro tools era
Amazing guitarist, players like Dan, Steve Lukather & Neal Schon have that instant soul & melody in thier playing. Giant's Time To Burn is an incredible album, better than the first record, proper gem!, as was Hardline's Double Eclipse release which featured Schon, i saw Hardline support Extreme in 1993, wicked gig. Great video, lovely to see Dan talking & playing, good interview, enjoyed it, thanks for posting. Cheers
Mason is right that David Foster WAS involved - but it was on the writing end as he co-wrote the tune with Peter. Michael O's production was spectacular - and having Dann on guitar just makes this track all that more special. Great interview!
Dann’s an amazing guitarist. Chicago used him on Chicago 19. Dann’s solos on Look Away, You’re Not Alone, and Heart In Pieces (particularly) are out of this world.
Dan Huff is my favorite session guitarist and an influence in my musicianship. His prolific sound and sensibility in his musical contribution from countless records and his band Giant always kept me enthralled. This is such a wonderful interview/performance from Dan. Cheers.

Saw him live in Stockholm 1989 with his group Giant. Great gig 😍. He also played rhythm guitar on my favorite Scritti Politti track, “World Come Back To Life”. So tight a funky 🕺. He’s really one of my favorite guitar players from the 80s.

Very nice to see this. Been a fan since Giant came with I ‘m a Believer. Such fantastic songs and production. I have great respect for Dann. Saw them in the 90’s in Paradiso Amsterdam. 👌👌👌
That's the guy! Never heard anyone who can play AND sing this good (beside Richie Kotzen). The two Giant records are masterpieces full of perfect crafted songs, unbelievable guitar parts and out of this world singing performances
I still remember that "Usual Suspects" moment when I realised that almost all the tracks - spanning way across the genres - that I loved over the past couple of decades because of the guitar parts was Dann Huff. It was like a "wait, is that *other* track I love Dann Huff..? Yes. Yes it is." Incredibly humble guy, great musician, great producer and still somewhat under-appreciated imo (outside the industry, I mean). Thanks for doing these interviews!
WOW! Dann is such a humble man. That song is one of my all time favorites, and his performance playing on it is crazy good! I have always wanted to know a little more about those who were on the session for Glory Of Love, so this is the best!
Thank you, Dann, for giving some much deserved spotlight to David Williams. His name hasn't risen to the level of other studio players, but it sure deserves to.
You said it perfectly, you were inferring that the way he played with the mastery of knowing each change, and playing through across changes shows restraint, a self governor if you will, and leaving the listener knowing how hard the player can shred, and go crazy if they wanted, it's like a twiddle tease, and backing off, leaving the eargasm effect of wanting more, never give the crowd what they want, always drawing back from what they expect is an artistic approach only someone who has mastered their instrument, and feel, tone, sound, has the ability to do.
Thanks so much for doing these interviews with session players from back in the day. Dan came to LA just a few weeks after I did and immediately started working. Me not so much. Haha. He's a monster. I relaying liked his rock soloing at the time. I imagine he started getting more work when Luke started concentrating on Toto and touring. Again thanks for doing these.
Glad you enjoyed it! Hope you'll come back for the full interview where we get more into the weeds on Dann's transition from Nashville to LA, and then back to Nashville again. It takes a real vision to evolve your tone and style in that direction. I would have a hard time drenching stuff with so much delay and biting clarity, but Dan did it, and basically created a decade of music! Thanks for the video Mason, you are hitting it out of the park!

Check out the new clip that dropped today! Full interview also comes next week!
80s rock was best rock, 80s guitar tone was best tone. No argument, you know I'm right.
100 % truth 🔥🤘❤️
I prefer 70s rock tone but I don't mind some 80s tone too. Love those chorused and compressed tones.
Agreed... Hands down the best!!
The best.
I agree wholeheartedly.
I am such a fan of Dan. His guitar and vocal work with his own band “Giant” was simply amazing!

Glad you enjoyed it! Remember, this is just a small clip, a teaser so to speak, the full video will come out in a week or so, and will be over two hours long.
I absolutely loved Mason's reaction when Dan was playing...he couldn't stop smiling and laughing. That's exactly what I do when I hear/see one of my heroes playing. Thank you Mason, can't wait for the full interview...Dan is an awesome beast of a guitar player. I hope you asked about Chaka Kahn and Giant in your full interview...
Be sure to check back when the full interview releases!
Masters of the guitar make it look so easy. He is simply one of the best.
❤️
Another underrated guitar legend that I really never knew much about, but the music he played in. It’s great to see the person behind the guitar and his guitar tone is immaculate. Louie Shelton is another great session guitarist. 🎸👍
Did you watch our interview with Louie? Just posted last week.
@@VertexEffectsInc Yes, I just watched it. Great job on the interview. I always want to know where each session guitarists got their musical/guitar training from. 🎸👍
Mason's reaction to his playing is the same as mine 😁❤
I'm still in disbelief!
Remember seeing Giant at the Town and Country Club in London and standing a few feet away at Edwards in Birmingham. Great band, great music, great memories. Danny and the whole band were great live and very cool after the show. Wish him the very best.
❤❤❤
Cool to see Dan playing the part!
See all of our “The Guitarist Behind” videos on our channel. This is all we do in this series. Session players playing their hit songs.
Great to see Dan embracing his history and talking guitars. Can't wait forl the full interview. Good job.

That excerpt sounded amazing! Also, loved your enthusiasm and energy, Mason. Good stuff!
Glad you enjoyed it! Be sure to subscribe so you get notified when we release the full two hour interview next week
It takes a real vision to evolve your tone and style in that direction. I would have a hard time drenching stuff with so much delay and biting clarity, but Dan did it, and basically created a decade of music! Thanks for the video Mason, you are hitting it out of the park!
I appreciate that! More to come in the full interview!
Love the way he plays. Some magic moments there
Yes, indeed!
As a drummer boy and certified air guitarist, I’m *so* in love with the guitar sound of the 80’s, almost feels dream like, I do wonder what the effect chain is like, sounds so good. 💫
❤️
I was having the exact same reaction as you did... You're a good guy 😁 Looking forward to the full episode!
❤❤❤ I still can't believe this happened! What a day!
Loved his guitar work. 🎸 great phrasing on songs.

I love the harmonics and tone and echo effects of Dan’s guitar sound. So unique and melodic. I’ve seen his name on a lot of musicians credits in CD liner notes!
