Dann Huff is a killer guitarist/musician. But I never liked most of the Giant songs. That's why I personally think that Giant was not really underrated. Their success was appropriate. I'll See You In My Dreams was a hit. One of the best powerballads ever. But besides that...hmmm.
@@mantelmann13 You need to take another listen to the second album, "Time to Burn." I actually thought the first album, outside of the ballad, was a little weak in the song department. But not on "Time to Burn." Great sings abound, rockers everywhere. Great album buried in the heinous onslaught of grunge.
Giant is one of those bands that seemed to be mostly overlooked by the industry mainstream. But that’s okay because when a lot of great bands become so overly commercialized they tend to lose their niche. But regardless of their popularity, they are still there to enjoy and appreciate for guys like me who still enjoy some good, straight ahead guitar rock. 👍
Saw them too in the Paradiso in Amsterdam. One of the best concerts i,ve ever seen. Saw a lot of great bands there. Tesla, TNT, White Lion, Kingdom Come, Loudness, Def Leppard, Frank Marino and lots more. Paradiso was the place to go in the 80s. All the great Hard Rock bands performed there.

@@ruiplas I just watched an interview with Mike Brignadelo. He played bass for Giant for 5 years. I know David Huff, Dan Huff's brother was the drummer. Who were the other members of the band?
Dan had everything in spades except timing. They came out just as this style of band was becoming a cliche. Supremely talented. He had an enviable career after this as a Nashville producer and studio guy.
Seen them that same year Live in Amsterdam.. Great Voice for a non natural born singer!! I always loved that (to me) U2 sounding/vibe on "Innocent Days".
@@panavisionnot7180 nix...it sounded just like that, that's why Dann swallows words and he actually brought his student on rhythm guitar...I saw them play live over here
It doesn’t get any better than this. The whole band is fantastic, but to sing and play guitar both at that level is just unbelievable. Dan Huff is superman. And then he’s so sought as a Nashville producer. He’s got a clinical ability and kinda reminds me of Mutt Lang in terms of a unique sound you can hear in the production. When he produced Martina McBride on the wild angels album Dan plays the solo on Two more Bottles of Wine himself, and it’s blisteringly brilliant, even though played at much lower gain/distortion levels. Fast, thoughtful, cleverly constructed, even humorous. Her band guitarists must have felt inadequate listening to that. He just knows how to leave you wanting more. Like the outro solo that fades on Hold Back the night. I’d pay a ton of money to hear that unfaded. So damned good, these guys should have been superstars. Grunge wasn’t kind on them and others though.
His vocals are almost as good as the album. That’s really something to me. Not too many singers sound as good if not better than the recordings. I wasn’t sure if his vocals were live in the beginning but I see where here and there he cuts his notes a bit short and there’s no backing track. He sure has one hell of a voice, with a lot of energy and rhythm in it.
THANK YOU FOR LISTING THIS!!! I've been trying to find this concert everywhere! There are a couple of songs posted from this concert, but not the whole set. I have loved Giant since their first album in 1989. I just wish they still had the same line up.
Tito Schmidt - AOR Melodic Rock Not me personally. Did you see the reunion show from last year? It's about 20 minutes & 4 songs and Dann isn't singing lead, but it is pretty amazing. Someone else posted it. Here's the link: th-cam.com/video/kYlxVRq9eaw/w-d-xo.html.
Loved the reunion - except that Giant had a guest lead singer. It’s not that Dann couldn’t still sing the songs ( he couldn’t .. time, yeah?) - It’s that the Giant songs were recorded with Dann singing his best on “the” day in the studio. He always struggled with the vocals live. Not that he couldn’t sing the songs - just that he couldn’t sing those high notes every night. He’s said so in several interviews. Doesn’t matter to me - been a fan of his since WhiteHeart in the early 80s.
If only giant had hang around for a few more years longer ... They would have been been even more gigantic ... NB. I believe that this gig was later overdubbed.. due to apparent sound issues live.. e.g 31.18.. a bit like air guitar playing.. DH is still one of my favourite giants of guitar..
Nicely done! The band sounds great (whether or not some parts are overdubbed :-) - just a reference to earlier comments in the thread). Dann is such a fine musician and now producer. He does such a credible job handling the vocals in studio but I have to wonder if the band might have fared a bit better with a front man to complement his guitar chops? Seems like the label really tried to make him a "star" which doesn't seem like his bag at all. Even so - thanks for posting this. (BTW - I believe the "official" title of "Doctor Doctor" is "Bad Case of Lovin' You" - at least that's how Robert Palmer titled it. Cheers!

Looking closely at the solo at 14.10... There's definitely some miming going on here! There's an audible slide and bend when his hands aren't moving!? Maybe he overdubbed them to get them the way he wanted afterwards... But I remember this show from 1990. I'd accidentally recorded it at half 2 in the morning, as we Brits used to get one hour a week of decent music shows and they were always on in the middle of the night. I watched it many times and you still have to admire the musicianship. This was a forerunner to me discoving Halen, Extreme etc.
You’re wrong, because they have another guitarist playing mostly rhythm. It’s like James Hetfield sometimes plays lead over Kirk Hammet, or he adds some playing to Kirk in Metallica. Same with Giant.
