Hi Nikki; Years ago I read that Tuomas said in an interview that "Dead Boy's Poem" is the most self-referential and personal song he has written, and for which he would like to be remembered for posterity. As for Floor; In this performance she demonstrates, without a doubt, why she is considered one of the best singers of her generation, if not the best. Greetings from Argentina!!!😉🤘😎👍🤗👏

The song is very personal to Tuomas. It's about him, and how he wants to be remembered. He's called it " the Mother of all Nightwish songs" From the 2000 3rd album, Wishmaster. When you see 'boy' or 'poet' , Tuomas is usually talking about himself.
One of the few times you don't see Emppu smiling and having fun. Troy is playing his Irish Bouzouki.
The next 2 tracks at this concert are "Elvenjig" and "Elvenpath", both songs will be in one video, and should be played together.

Yeah, I feel noticed the more serious side with Emppu. He did his part and then walked away. And I love his goofy faces and expressions so I could feel the change for this one.
Thank you for the heads up about Elevnjig and Elvenpath! 🎥

welp, now you know why so many of us have been waiting for you to get to this song! Floor's voice, the slow build, one of the few song's where Emppu is dead serious on stage, and the story... Tuomas has stated this is his most personal song, and how he wants to be remembered after he's gone. this song also has one of my favorite lyrics of any song ever... "So much to live for, so much to die for, if only my heart had a home..." f-ing gets me every time. anyone who's ever been lonley and was longing for a connection, any connection... that line just hits too close to home. you can really tell Tuomas is giving us his truth in songs like this, and that makes it hit even harder...

    • @nikkireviews
      @nikkireviews  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

Yeah! Emppu is the one I really took note of. He usually is always making silly faces and is hamming it up with the other band members but this time he was just very serious and then turned around and walked to the back when his solo was over.
And those are heartbreaking, yet beautiful lyrics.. 💔

Nice job noticing how everyone gets more serious in songs like this. Even Emppu, who is almost always smiling, was dead serious during and after his solo. And I always like seeing Tuomas feeling the music, and singing along to himself.
Regarding Floor, this might be second only to "Devil and the Deep Dark Ocean" from the same concert, amongst my favorite Floor vocal performances. Love the delicate singing at the beginning, and my goodness, those belts at the end! Just insane. And yes, she's a fantastic storyteller.

    Background things
Swan on the screen: In Finnish mythology and folklore, the swan was the divine messenger between the living and the dead. Tuonelan Joutsen (Swan of Tuonela) carries the dead to afterlife.
Tuomas composed this when he was 22 years old. This from their book, timeline year 2000:
    ------------------------
Besides the choir, the album featured some other guest artists, Ike Vil of Babylon Whores contributed some deranged self-inspection for 'The Kinslayer', and 'Dead Boy's Poem' featured a child's voice. "I had an idea of a song with a young boy reciting a poem", Tuomas says. "The trouble was that no Finnish 12-year-old could pronounce English so that it sounded right, so I had to find a native speaker to do it. My mother's sister, actress Miitta Sorvali, knew (the English-Finnish director and writer) Neil Hardwick well, and my mom remembered that Neil had a son called Sam. I called him and asked him to do the poem, and Sam agreed right away. It was just funny that when I talked to this 15-year-old boy, he seemed like such a citizen of the world and was actually familiar with our band, too. Sam said he'd be free to record the poem anytime; I'd just have to give him a call. He even knew where Finnvox was and promised to meet us there."
The professionalism of young Sam Hardwick made a deep impression on Tuomas. "When he arrived at the studio, I had to ask him to wait for ten minutes or so, and he just pulled a book from his pocket and sat down to read", Tuomas says. "I gave him the poem, and he read it through a few times. We did some editing, and Sam just sat down on the studio floor and read his book, after which I asked him to read the poem a couple of more times."
"When I started talking about his reward, he wouldn't hear anything about it. He just said "It's okay, it was fun". I insisted on giving him at least a couple of hundred marks, and then he left. A very puzzling young man, but a real pro and a very nice person. He later did the beginning of 'Bless the Child', too, and once again, everything worked like a charm. 'Dead Boy's Poem' continues to be a sort of a signature song for Nightwish, and after 'Wishmaster' came out, the song was voted on our web site as the best Nightwish song ever. There's certainly something about it that defines us, and - for me at least - the poem is the absolute high point of the song. So Sam Hardwick made a big contribution to our music."
For Tuomas, 'Dead Boys Poem' is a deeply personal song. "The idea for that song came to me when I was thinking that if I die tomorrow, what kind of a message do I want to leave behind", Tuomas explains. "That song is all about apologizing, about saying thank you to those who deserve it - and likewise telling those who deserve it to fu*k off. It's kind of a testament. I had to make a song like that, just in case I happened to die tomorrow. A Finnish man rarely thanks anyone, or says he's sorry, but for me at least, it was possible through music."
"I still live at my mom and dad's, who are the best people in the world, but I've never been able to tell them what I think about them", Tuomas confesses. "Maybe if they listen to the song and read the lyrics, they'll understand that it's partly about them, too. It's also about my best friends and Nightwish, the band that has come to be a significant - if not the most significant - part of myself in the course of years. My band mates are really important to me, but it's hard for me as a Finnish man to show my feelings. I'd rather write a song like 'Dead Boy's Poem' and ask them to listen to the words, because I just can't say it out loud. It's such a personal song, and I think it has the best lyrics I've ever been able to write. Musically, it's really good, too, definetely the best song on 'Wishmaster' - maybe the best Nightwish song ever."
It had not gone unnoticed by Tarja (1st lead singer) that Tuomas expressed his feelings through music. "The melodic power of music - and the fact that music can be beautiful even at its heaviest - has always meant an awful lot to Tuomas", Tarja says. "He's able to show all his feelings in his music. I think Tuomas is very brave, because not many people can do the same. He may not look like a macho man, but when it comes to music, It's all or nothing for him."

Welcome to Toumas' most personal song. His elegy, eulogy and at the same time is declaration of intent for music and life. The child and the ocean, his preferred themes. This song was published in 2000 for their third album, Wishmaster, and loved it since then. It took this live version with Floor's staggering stage presence and interpretation for this little masterpiece to get its well deserved recognition

  • @Thorgrim247

This is a very emotional and personal song for Tuomas. The small child's voice represents Tuomas inner child speaking.
When asked what this song was about "Tuomas has said about this song, that it's about if he were to die tomorrow, what would he want to say to everyone that he loves, and that love him..."
Notice the small boy on the screen reaching out to the flying swans on the screen. He is reaching out to implore them to take him with to the other side.
In archaeological excavations done in Karelia, a child was found and its body was laying upon a wing of a swan. In Finnish mythology and folklore, the swan was the divine messenger between the living and the dead. When a swan dropped its head below the surface, people of old times believed that it was communicating to the spirit world.
Killing swans was a terrible crime because it was as bad as murdering a human. Punishments for killing swans were severe, the usual penalty was death.
Swan song often symbolizes an artist´s last performance but for a long time all across the world all the way to the 17th century it was believed that swans only sang when they died.
A beautiful song filled with sadness from an unfulfilled destiny.
Here are the spoken words from Dead Boy's Poem.
    "If you read this line
Remember not the hand that wrote it
    Remember only the verse
Songmaker's cry, the one without tears
For I've given this its strength
And it has become my only strength
Comforting home, mother's lap, chance for immortality
Where being wanted became a thrill I never knew The sweet piano writing down my life"
"Teach me passion, for I fear it's gone
Show me love, hold the lorn
So much more I wanted to give to the ones who love me I
    'm sorry
Time will tell, this bitter farewell
I live no more to shame, nor me, nor you
And you I wish I didn't feel for you anymore"
    A lonely soul
    An ocean soul

You should find a better "songs explained"-site. ;-) The boy (as always) is Tuomas (or at least his younger version). He wrote this song as he was 22-ish, just after Nightwish exploded in popularity. All of a sudden he is assigned this god-like status he is not prepared for. The pressure to create new songs, even better than the last is huge. He feels his fame and responsibilities have cut short his childhood. The boy he once was, now no longer exists (hence the boy is dead). He worries how he is ever to find true love in this crazy situation. Also it is hard to stay true to yourself when you are running a multi-million operation, where many people depend on your performance for their livelihood. It would wrong to complain about any of this, because he is living his dream. He got exactly what he wished for and should be thankful for that.

The one song where Emppu does not smile while he plays, yeah, they all know what it means. This is a heart-wrenching song, yet it is one of their most beautiful. Floor is absolutely on point, holding notes at perfection. Tuomas is the key to it all, it comes from his soul, but he speaks for all of them, and they each bring a vital piece to the puzzle of the song they so brilliant craft. Remove any one of them and it.falls apart, and that is the secret of Nightwish. They know this, they do not fight for attention. They place their piece of that puzzle, and smile, and when it's all put together, they smile again and we swoon. Tuomas is very simply the greatest composer of my long lifetime. So glad that you "get" this, Nikki. Thanks for sharing with us.

  • @jukkahelminen9071
    @jukkahelminen9071 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

This version is one of my biggest NW favorites. Especially when sung in Floor's emotional way. As you might have guessed, the song really tells what Tuomas feels and thinks. The song is really very personal to him and the rest of the band supports it nicely with their performance. Not even Emppu smiles after the guitar solo, as he normally does!
Tuomas has also sometimes said that it is difficult for him to talk about his feelings, but he is able to write them into a song and present it that way.
The original song was released in 2000 on NW's third album, and only two of those who played in the band from that period (Tuomas and Emppu) were involved in this 2018 version.
You can see big birds on the LED screen. They are related to the theme of the song, death. In old pre-Christian Finnish mythology, a large bird represented the carrier of the soul. It gave the child a soul at birth. When a person dies, a big bird picks up the soul and transports it to another world. So Tuomas has shown with his choice of LED screen that now there is a serious song to be played.

Good analysis and you are right, Tuomas said that this song is very personal to him. Floor's voice and her ability to feel other's emotions and transmit those emotions to the listeners, make her the greatest for me. She and her voice are a perfect instrument and Tuomas' voice.

@@nikkireviews Good luck with that. I've noticed that many reactors refrain from watching Tarja's Nightwish videos after a couple of attempts because many Tarja's fans are often incredibly toxic in the comments when it comes to old Nightwish videos: They constantly initiate holy wars about the events surrounding Tarja's dismissal, Tuomas' character traits and that the "real" Nightwish ceased to exist in 2005.

Another beautiful and insightful reaction! One of my top 5 Nightwish songs. I love how you picked up on all the aspects of this song that make it so amazing, especially Floor's ability to convey Tuomas's emotions. One of the more personal songs for Tuomas and the fans. An old song written by Tuomas when he was young. Inspired by the question what would you say if you knew you were going to die tomorrow. Tuomas has said this song was a way of thanking all those who deserve his thanks and a piss off to all those who deserve it as well. Tuomas often uses the dead boy as a symbol of the loss of childhood innocence and imagination that we experience as we grow into adulthood. When you hear dead boy or poet in his lyrics he is usually referring to himself. He also has a strong connection to the ocean and sees it as a place of peace and tranquility. A refugee from the modern world. So in this song Tuomas is saying that he no longer lives for himself or his friends but only for the music. He puts all his feelings into the music and his music is what gives his life meaning. He tries to make his life better but can never get back to the innocence of his youth. He wants to be loved but can't connect with people. He asks that they remember his music, not him, after he is gone. Thus a lonely soul, an ocean soul. Note that on the video wall behind the band the boy is holding up his arms to several swans. In Finnish mythology swans are the creatures that guide your soul to the afterlife.

    My no 4.
Quite right to mention TPATP - the comment Tuomas' made about this being his most personal song was many years before Poet and I feel Poet may be as personal now - or more so.
Floor tells this story far better than Tarja in my view; she has so much versatility.
When the second section starts she goes into my favourite part of her range; that low velvety sound gives me goosebumps.
Notice this is the only performance, bas far as I know, in which Emppu doesn't smile at all. Even in TPATP he does from time to time.
Here are some notes from Tuomas:
"Dead Boy's Poem' featured a child's voice. "I had an idea of a song with a young boy boy reciting reciting a poem", Tuomas says. "The trouble was that no Finnish so I had to find a
12-year-old could pronounce English so that it sounded right, so I had to find a native speaker to do it. My mother's Sister, actress Miitta Sorvali, knew [the English-Finnish director and writer] Neil Hardwick well, and my mum remembered that Neil had a son called Sam. I called him and asked him to do the poem, and Sam agreed right away.
It was just funny that when I talked to this 15-year-old boy he seemed like such a citizen of the worldand was actually familiar with our band too. Sam said he'd be free to record the poem anytime; I'd just have to give him a call.
He even knew where Finnvox was and promised to meet us there. The professionalism of young Sam Hardwick made a deep impression on Tuomas.
"When he arrived at the studio, had to ask him
to wait for ten minutes or so and he just pulled a book from his pocket and sat down to read".
Tuomas says, " I gave him the poem, and he read it through a few times. We did some editing and Sam just sat down on the studio floor and read his book, after which I asked him to read the poem a couple of more times."

From what I gather, there r a lot of sad poems and folklore in Finland... comes w/ having so little sunlight 😁 Tuomas (keyboards) wrote this for the 'Wishmaster' album in 2000 when Tarja was the singer... In some way, he related to a child who passed away early in life because he felt (especially after the 'Wishmaster' album) that he had 'lost his innocence'... and was now an adult at the mercy of the music industry and the haters out there... Every artist/ songwriter who has risen to fame has had to contend w/ the pitfalls of fame and stardom...
It's easy when no one knows who u are and u can go about your business casually... It's another when u have to watch yourself in public or anything u say on social media or the press.
Dave Grohl of Nirvana recalled that he wasn't prepared for the change that was thrust on them when the band became famous when he was only 21... (The late) George Harrison of The Beatles hated the fame because he was a gentle, sensitive soul and the crush of public scrutiny and demand ended up making him jaded and he walked away from the music business by 1992 and passed away in 2001 from cancer.
But most notably... Roger Waters (bass/ vocals) of Pink Floyd absolutely hated the peak years of the band... he would literally berate the audience from the stage if they made too much noise at their concerts in the 70's... He refused to tour w/ Pink Floyd after 1981 and left the band by 1984.

Well explained by your commentators, but might I underline these points and the dept of Tuomas' English knowledge to use little known pieces of Shakespeare appropriately.
This is what Tuomas said about this song: "This is the most personal song I’ve ever written. My testimony for the whole world. With this song I want to apologise everyone who deserves my apology. It also makes an “I don’t care” -statement to them who deserve it. The song is also about what Nightwish means and has meant to me. It’s all, without it I’m dead. I have created it and it has created me. When I pass away, this song’s lyrics are of what I wish to be remembered. An Ocean Soul".
It might help you to know Tuomas uses several pseudonyms to refer to himself in various Nightwish songs which he writes from experiences or imagination, he says he is a man with a boy's heart and you will see that directly in places, here for instance, or elsewhere as "one with a pure heart", a line Floor sings in a high head voice as you might hear from an excited small boy.
    Of course, you hear the narration spoken by a young boy. . . . . . .
He will also use poet, dreamer, writer/song writer or ocean soul - Tuomas has an affinity for the ocean, he was studying to be a marine biologist.
As has been correctly stated, this song is his self-written obituary/epitaph, he is the dead boy and appears in the back drop imploring the swans which in Finnish traditions carry you off to the afterlife.
There's two Shakespeare quotes in this song almost verbatim from Sonnet 71 and 72, Sonnet 71 starts, "No longer mourn for me when I am dead" and Tuomas used the line " Nay, if you read this line, remember not the hand that writ it"; and Sonnet 72, "And live no more to shame nor me nor you."
It is the only time too you will see a very serious Emppu, not his usual joking and happy self; he knows exactly what this song means.
