Wow. A sailing channel that shows sailing and sail adjustments rather than just talking about them. Show more actual sailing. Thanks. Liked, subscribed and belled!
So is altering course a point or two. More comfort, less roll, Better VMG, The main can be used for both propulsion and roll damping. What's not to like?
That has to be a mood destroyer crapping in a bucket on the high seas. I just could not muster the courage to do something like this but I love the story.
That was an awesome video showing the challenges and rewards (working toilet) of a long passage. Nice shout out to Gary for the successful repair. Beautiful spinnaker too. Have fun, be safe, and enjoy One Life 🇺🇸🙏👏🏻🚜🤗.
Not on the boat, but at 31:46 with that sky in the horizon, I thought that why are they putting up the spinnaker, well yeah. Glad nothing bad happened. Thanks for the video!
I sailed around the world in the early '90s. A boat almost same size and configuration as One Life. Also had a very very similar philosophy and approach to blue water sailing. All this makes it super fun to watch your videos😊
Best boat hack.. Remove the old toilet pump, us a maciator on the out side and a saltwater pump for the in. Each on their own switch. This will change boating for you.
Made my morning coffee when I saw your video! Nice spinnaker. Glad it came down safely. Enjoying your passage videos. Looking forward to the next. Thanks for sharing your adventures.
Wow! Great filming and content. We are a sailing couple as well, rarely have extra crew, so while we are 20 years ahead of you in age, you are about 20,000 sailing miles ahead of us and your videos are extremely informative as well as entertaining. Well done.
Just love your channel! Your videos are so raw and real. ( I don’t have a boat, or know anything about sailing) You show sailing in the real world! Stay safe guys!👍🥰🥰🏴
It's great to see you guys interacting so well together, it can't be easy in such a small environment. ... all I can see is that its truly a relaxes team effort. I'm pleased to see both of you using safety kit when working with sails. I wish you continued safe sailing.
I watched a few scattered videos and how I ever stumbled across these videos I'll never know, but I went back to video 1 and binged watch this and finished 9/30/23 central time, Missouri and realized you two are in the pacific ocean at this time, wow! I feel like I'm right there with you. I wish you 2 all the best and cannot wait until the next video. Brook, you really do a great job with the videos. Gary, I can relate to you fixing everything, and Brook does her share, too. Safe sailing to you both.
I saw a review of a yacht the other day where they commented that the counter really needed a ledge, you just showed us why! 3:43 and I'm talkative this morning. BTW, new sub, I'm really pleased, you two goofs bring a smile to my morning, what else in life can we really hope for?
Thanks for joining our channel, Michael! When we first bought the boat we were total newbs to sailing and I (Brooke) wondered why there were ledges on every surface. 😂 I quickly learned why. Cheers!
This documentary of the crossing is definitely in the top echelon. Good story telling and cinema, you got me I’m going back to episode one for a binge, wahay.
the romance of a broken toilet and 5 minutes too late reducing sail . . . as jimmy sang, "its for the stories we can tell." keep on telling. it is truly romantic in a way few will ever know like you.
Glad you got into the ocean groove. Did the Atlantic South and North 4 times in the late 1990's and the ocean passages were the best. Time exclusively for yourself as we were max 3 people at a time.
Great video, appreciated Gary's sail setup explanation while going dead downwind. The question just entered my mind and Gary explained. Great video, nice editing.
I love the videos guys!! Every time you threw one of those Chicken Dolphins back in I screamed...nooooooo!!!! That's fresh meat and tasty too. No way would I have done that but I am a bit of a rogue at times...lol! Enjoy the sailing and the time together!!!!
So glad to see this update. I was getting very worried but found you on Instagram, so I was happy to see you got to French Polynesia! YAY! Great videos and I really enjoy watching them. I have to suggest to buy some eyeglasses chains/straps to wear. I lost my favorite sunglasses while sailing and my dad lost his eyeglasses, which was really bad as he has Astigmatism and made it harder for him to see. You both stay safe!
Hi Nancy! Thank you! Yes, our videos are behind real time. We are safe and sound! Appreciate the tip on the sunglass strap. Gary has one that he uses for his sunnies but we need them for our glasses!
Every boat I have bought...I always buy new heads...haha...solves some of the toilet drama..who doesn't hate boat head drama..hahah..Gary's face after the fix...hahaha...what can I say..hahah (love all the effort you all do like the drone shots and all of that)
It's great to see ypu are both feeling better and all is well! You're both in my prayers for a safe journey to the other side. Thanks for sharing your journey! ❤ ⛵️
Hey! Good to hear from y’all! I can’t imagine fixing a cra**er in the middle of the ocean!🤣 Prayers, blue skies, and smooth sailing for the rest of the way. Looking forward to next episode!
Need one of those toilet seats that slides in a receiver hitch on a truck. Mount a receiver on the transom. That way you can pull your dingy or have a toilet on the transom. Fasten your seat belt and let it go overboard.
I think Gary should call Home Depot to see about endorsement for their nice Orange buckets😂 great video about the fun of Ocean passages and head issues. ❤❤
Glad to see you two healthy and still chugging along, mucho courage out there. I'll stick with my coastal cruising thank you. Some years back one of my sailboats had two heads. Always wanted to remove second one and make tool storage/sail locker out of it plus would get rid of a thru hull. But after seeing your trouble that might be justification to leave second head in boat. Good luck, of course great video.
Hey Jack! Thank you! We always thought having two heads would just be more things to fix....but when we were without one, we certainly wished we had two! Grass is always greener... 💚
Love your videos guys, I seem to learn more from you guys than any other channel and it is very helpful as we are looking to set off next march up the east coast of Australia. I also love your boat works series as well. If you get to Australia maybe you could look us up. Keep the awesome videos coming, they are great.
Hi there! We are happy to hear you are learning some things from our videos. Good luck to you on your future journey. We hope to make it to Australia at some point! Maybe we will cross paths one day. ⛵🙌
Great video you two hope to be where you are in a few years can’t tell you how much inspiration I get from watching these videos along with Delos and a couple others so thanks for what you do
Hey guys - so cool that you are out there - shew you have done great - well done man.. Nice scuba diving ahead of you in FP... please what are your night watch shifts - and how is satrlink worong out.. So happy for you.. When the boss says reef - reef..
Good seeing you again this week happy to see all is going well. All good here in OBX, dodged a couple potential storms and fingers crossed our luck continues. Hope the same for you guys. Ed
Baggy wrinkles are not suitable for running rigging. Sisal and hemp being in short supply, inexpensive plastic boots are available for use on spreader tips. For my money, I would have simply relocated the preventer a notch or two.
It’s great to see and hear all about the day to day life on passages. Thank you for not rushing through this and spreading it over more than one video!
Just started watching this past week and I'm hooked, thanks. Also, my wife has the same type of spinnaker story on Lake Michigan as I was just like Gary and a bit slow on listening to her. I have learned my lesson. Keep up with the wonderful videos and be safe.
Thanks guy's! I'm absolutely loving watching your pacific adventure and the day to day struggles you have along the way! Take care and safe travels guy's 👍
Don't just let these moments glide past. Life is about collecting memories. A bucket list is only worth your time when you realize you need a bigger bucket.😁
Brooke and Gary - you guys are rockin’ this sh*t !! This was a fantastic episode ! Your current editing style is excellent. Can’t wait to see the conclusion of this epic first time Pacific Ocean crossing. And speaking of which, CONGRATULATIONS as not only did you achieve this huge milestone but you two are now Shellbacks 🤙🏼⛵️ You two are rapidly becoming one of my top 3 sailing channels. ( and sorry, I’m not saying who is in which position of my top 3 ) 😊
I know nothing about sailing. I have only watched videos of intrepid spirits like you guys cross oceans. Fantastic. Yours is the "rolliest" boat I have ever seen in any of all the videos I have seen. Thank you for explaining why.
Enjoyed the video showing vairioius issues and challenges you guys are facing. Interesting to hear about the different sail configurations you have considered and tried. Through this you guys continue to show a positive attitude and outlook. Thanks for sharing with us. All the best...
the only problem with Composting toilets is where do you keep all that Biomass for them that they need? A Seawater toilet you bring in the Water, flush and dump, or holding tank while at Anchor. Only Reak issue is urine reacts with Seawater, and the pipework starts to build up a calcium lining, so soak them with Spirit Vinegar regularly to clean that off the pipes. I have heard a number of people saying to soak with bleach prior to doing the Vinegar soak, Sounds OK, but I haven't had a chance to try it myself yet. Spirit Vinegar is nice for removing scuffs and stains from Non slip decks as well, just brush on with a deck brush, leave to work then rinse off. Spirit Vinegar can be really cheap to stock up with, and if you close the seacocks, can freshen up the sink piping from Galley and sinks in heads too. Chlorine in Bleach (especially the weak standard stuff ) normally is gone really fast too. Friend's wife, ex Waterboard employee, cleans up chlorinated tap water by filling a jug, and popping it in the fridge overnight, and in the morning, Chlorine free water. 👍 Safe Travels and Fair Winds. Bob. ⛵️✨️✨️✨️❤️
@@brownnoise357 storing the media to cover is a definite consideration, but with a low powered fan to vent and a stirring function, it dessicates pretty quickly and you don't need a huge amount of media for a couple of weeks.
Straight over the rail… drag a wash cloth behind on a rope, use it, drop it back in. Then you don’t mess up the bucket. Don’t worry, you’ll find the right perch.
@SailingOneLife Thanks for sharing Gary and Brooke. One question: How do you handle anxiety or having fear? ( while sailing and or prepairing for an ocean crossing ). I deeply respect the seas , after racing open sail cats , in harsh seas , back in the days. An Atlantic crossing , on a fast sailboat ,is still on my bucket list. 🙏
Hi Glenn! Thanks for the comment. That's a great question. We both have a level of anxiety and fear which we believe is a good thing. We believe we've done every reasonable thing we can to set us up for a successful passage. There are many things that can happen but instead of focusing on things we have no control of, we focus on the things we do (boat maintenance, safety gear, etc) and keep a positive mindset. Hope this helps :)
@@SailingOneLife Thanks for your honest reply! Yes 100% with you , you can only prepair to a certain level. The rest is making hours and getting experience, because there always will happen something, that's new. ( btw, by doing new things and overcomming that stress , new connections in our brains are made. Chronic stress is working opposit, so not good ) .
That's a roly passage, love the tied to the seat bit, lol. Well done on tackling the toilet, especially in those conditions. The spinnaker is so vibrant. Great sailing guys. Way to go on the cheeseburgers Brett, they look scrumptious. Good to see you guys settling into the sail. Damn, that was wild with the weather. Love the vlog :)
I'm curious, have either of you sailed across the equator before? Was there a ceremony, offerings to Neptune... to transform from Pollywags to Shellbacks... is it even official if a Shellback doesn't preside over the ceremony... lol
We found sailing with just spinnaker, without the main, it was very rolly. When we hoisted the main, we found it was much more stable. Thanks for sharing your videos.
You are an awesome couple. I imagine a connection you create in all this time must be unique. What books do you read when you have some spare time? Take care and enjoy your travels. Thanks a lot for sharing.
Hi Ivan! Thank you! Yes, experiencing this journey together does create a special connection. Brooke enjoys reading all types of books but mostly reads thrillers or documentary types.
Niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiice ride guys 🎉 You did pass up some sweet trading Mahi. Oh well. Thanks for a great episode. 👍🏻🙌🏻 See you next time.✨ 🌊 💨 ⛵️ 🏝️ 👙 🌞 ✨
Good video 👍yea Brooke was right about the last spinnaker,in rain and clouds wind can speed up without a warning ⚠️ Enjoyed all but the toilet repair part 😵💫felt sorry for Gary.Happy you are back at sea sailing again!!!!!❤
They make rubbery stuff you can put in cabinets and drawers. Might be a good idea to get that for the galley. Maybe the make it in silicone so you can put hot plates on it? Would help with the slide I think.
As would a 2 or 3 point course change. Less roll, more comfort, better VMG, You could get propulsion and roll damping from the main. What's not to like?
Do you clip in to safety lines when on deck? Have you practiced MOB drills? Both of you? Are you confident that you can spot the overboard person in the great big ocean? Just curious.
We had a crew of two and we did the COB drills off of Bora Bora during a calm. The lesson: never, never, never fall off the boat. Just don't fall off the boat. We had always been pretty good about clipping into the jack lines, but the COB drills with just two of us in the big wide ocean instilled discipline!
We clip into our jacklines when conditions dictate. We wear our life vests when leaving the cockpit unless conditions are very calm. Both our life vests have a personal EPIRB (PLB) in them. We never leave the cockpit at night without the other being awake and in the cockpit watching. Either of us can furl in sails alone and turn the boat around. If we do have a MOB situation, everything in the cockpit that floats (cushions, pillows) will be immediately thrown overboard as well to make finding the person easier. Nothing's guaranteed, but we feel good about our safety protocols and that's what matters, since we're on our own out here.
Most authentic sailing couple on YT right here folks.
Ah, thanks Andrew!! 💙
Wow. A sailing channel that shows sailing and sail adjustments rather than just talking about them. Show more actual sailing. Thanks. Liked, subscribed and belled!
Hey Luke! Thank you! Happy to hear you enjoyed the sailing. ⛵🙌
Love seeing just the three of you sailing across the ocean. Brooke, Gary and Gary’s epic beard.
Love you two! 💜
Loved the sail plan talk, Gary! Thank you for talking about the rig & not being able to go wing-on-wing.
Good to hear you enjoyed that! Thanks!
Omg Gary is soooo funny!!!!
Thanks, Donna!
A wet cloth under your cutting board will stop it from sliding. You guys are living my dream!
Thanks for the tip! A couple others recommended that as well!

Yes. Take the wind where it wants to go. Make it comfortable in the general direction. Its not the destiation its the journey.
It's 100% about the journey indeed!
Monday I left Split, Croatia on a 50' Bennetteau. Hit Vis, Brac, Korcula and today at Havr. Been awesome all week.
Hi Dennis! Awesome, we hope to get to that area some day!

Awesome video guys! Way to show the reality of life at sea.
Thanks for watching, friends! 💙
Love the tool drawers! Nicely organized!
Seriously that is really cool.
Thank you! Gary spent quite a bit of time getting his tool area how he wants it!

Bwahahaha wouldn't that be a sight to see! 🙈
"And Gary is shitting in a bucket..." Hahah... hilarious!
Hahaha I still laugh thinking about it.
Glad to see you both surviving the big crossing. God speed.
Thanks, Dennis! 🤙⛵
I think Gary should call Home Depot to see about endorsement for their nice Orange buckets😂 great video about the fun of Ocean passages and head issues. ❤❤
😂 maybe Yeti will give us a bucket with a lid!
That was in bad taste. They should be living in a trailer instead of a boat.
Funny to me. When we stop laughing at ourselves, that is a big problem.

Enjoyed the video showing vairioius issues and challenges you guys are facing. Interesting to hear about the different sail configurations you have considered and tried. Through this you guys continue to show a positive attitude and outlook. Thanks for sharing with us. All the best...
Thanks, Steve! Good to know you enjoyed hearing about the sail configurations! We weren't sure if that would interest people or not.
Hey I appreciate your thoughts and explanations on your actions and sail choice under different conditions!! Fair winds!
Glad you liked that part! Thank you!
How big of a tuna do you need? That one at 31:00 was big enough for several meals.
Yes,in hindsight we should have kept that one!
I like the simplicity of sh!tting in a bucket. When we build our boat, composting head it is.
Quite a few of our previous buddy boats have composting heads, much less to go wrong! Gary refers to them as the kitty litter buckets. 😂
the only problem with Composting toilets is where do you keep all that Biomass for them that they need?
Not having a black water tank opens up a vast amount of storage to store bricks of coconut coir ;) for the #humanlitterbox 🤣
@@BeauAndBrandy that's a great point B&B
Straight over the rail… drag a wash cloth behind on a rope, use it, drop it back in. Then you don’t mess up the bucket. Don’t worry, you’ll find the right perch.
Haha love this approach! Save the bucket!
Nice!
Thank you!
dang, great work folks! 7 mins in watching him fix the toilet was UUUGGGG but i appreciate you guys keeping so REAL!
Haha yeah good thing we had a bucket! 💩🥴
Good to see you guys are feeling better!!
Yes! Thanks, Doug!
@SailingOneLife
Thanks for sharing Gary and Brooke.
One question:
How do you handle anxiety or having fear?

Thanks for your honest reply! Yes 100% with you , you can only prepair to a certain level. The rest is making hours and getting experience, because there always will happen something, that's new.
( btw, by doing new things and overcomming that stress , new connections in our brains are made. Chronic stress is working opposit, so not good ) .
Merci!
Thank you so much, Ned! 💙
Thank you so much! Ha, yeah the passage was full of ups and downs! All part of this journey we are on! 💙
I'm curious, have either of you sailed across the equator before? Was there a ceremony, offerings to Neptune... to transform from Pollywags to Shellbacks... is it even official if a Shellback doesn't preside over the ceremony... lol
Hi Bruce! Nope the first time for both of us! You'll see our equator crossing festivities in our next video!
Gary repeat after me “Brooke was right we should have taken down the spinnaker” 😂
Gary repeat after me 'Brooke is always right' 🤣💙
We found sailing with just spinnaker, without the main, it was very rolly. When we hoisted the main, we found it was much more stable. Thanks for sharing your videos.
Good to know! Thank you :)
I would love to meet you lovely people one day soon…..you have motivated me enough for a crossing in my life time once my kids are grown up……
Hey there! Thank you! Hope you are able to cross an ocean one day, it is an indescribable experience filled with highs and lows. ⛵
@@SailingOneLife thanx
keep smiling and being positive no matter what. Love that you do. Stay safe and well.
Positivity is key! Thank you! 💙
Of all the many sailing chanels I watch, you all seem to go through many of the toughest seas by far. Great to watch!😎
Happy to hear you are enjoying our channel!
Niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiice ride guys 🎉 You did pass up some sweet trading Mahi. Oh well. Thanks for a great episode. 👍🏻🙌🏻 See you next time.✨ 🌊 💨 ⛵️ 🏝️ 👙 🌞 ✨
Hi Richard! In hindsight, we shouldn't have tossed the mahi! We have heard that it's better to eat some of the smaller fish. Maybe next time! Cheers!
Good video 👍yea Brooke was right about the last spinnaker,in rain and clouds wind can speed up without a warning ⚠️ Enjoyed all but the toilet repair part 😵💫felt sorry for Gary.Happy you are back at sea sailing again!!!!!❤
Thanks, Mark! Ha oh the joys of a long passage! 💩🌧️ Fun stuff coming next episode!
They make rubbery stuff you can put in cabinets and drawers. Might be a good idea to get that for the galley. Maybe the make it in silicone so you can put hot plates on it? Would help with the slide I think.
Thanks, Jeremy! A few other people mentioned this as well. I'll try to buy some silicone mats next time we are somewhere that sells them.
