"If you're doing some landscapes, casual portraits, and maybe some wedding work..." Yep that basically describes me right now. I have an a7iii and I shoot about 1-2 weddings a year and do a few portrait sessions too. I have no need to upgrade right now. All I'm really missing is the real time tracking AF. Totally content to wait until the a7V update in a few years time.
Have a look at your wedding work, especially the receptions where you're photographing in the dark at high ISOs and tally up all the out of focus shots. The a7IV would nail focus every time (my a7RIV even does that) with tracking and eye AF. To me, it's well worth the money to have every photo with tack sharp focus.
If that's all you shoot ... then why are you looking to upgrade to an a7v in the future ? btw dusk off your camera occasionally between those only 2 wedding a yr. I question your interest in photography with that lack of workload tbh,
@@drwalka10 he light not be a professional photographer. Or he could be shooting landscapes all the time and does some wedding and portrait from time to time. Who are you to judge ;)
@@huwmorgan51 You have missed shots from receptions with an A7III? I have rarely any missed shots. A7III + 28-75/f2.8 here. AF.C with live preview OFF. Usually ZoneAF. And with primes the focus is only better.
I've briefly used an a7iv and I can confirm for pro photographers I highly recommend that camera for it is faster in so many ways. For the occasional pro user the iii is still a great choice and very affordable on the used market! To sum up I agree with Chris and Jordan
Of course what Chris and Jordan say is spot on. Since I have a few minutes I'll throw in my half penny or two since Chris did suggest the a7r lineup toward the end...I chose a lightly used a7r (first edition) as my very first full-framer a couple months ago for $950. I looked at the $2000 a7iii and of course the more expensive and in-demand brand-new a7iv. The iii and iv of course seemed great, but for more than $1k less I got a great camera that covered my needs. I got a 36mp sensor, weather sealing, durable shell and relatively compact (I have big hands, so the grip is barely even big enough for me). Yes I do have to put up with the click-clack of the a7r's clunky shutter. I believe later a7r models get rid of that issue. Either way when I switch over to my a6000, I hear that single shutter sound and think, "ahhh, just hearing that in my next full-frame will mean I upgraded sufficiently." Lastly, since I'm almost exclusively a landscape photographer, I don't at all care about the special focusing features and those sorts of things. In other words, don't forget about good used gear from a reliable source, or even older but unused models. That's all I can say right now. Great review as always, guys. Stay warm up there, aye?!
I wouldn't touch a used anything with a pole but the difference in the A7R you bought and the a73 is so much different you wouldn't use that thing if you tried one. Ill be going for the A74.
I had a choice between the A7R4 and A74, I choose the A74 because of the flip screen. I do pet photography and being able to get that low angle in portrait orientation without having to lay down on the ground was the deciding factor.
Nice video. I'm still very happy with my A7III. It does everything I need and the image quality is very good. I rather spend the money on new lens(es).
Just wanted to say the Vazen Anamorphic Lens made this video look very pleasing and filmic. I hope you use it in future. For those with 21x9 screens, would it be possible to crop the black borders for a full-screen presentation?
well, it comes without any bars right from the camera. the guys added it to play it safe of variety of devices supported by youtube. otherwise, natively you get double your sensor width frame size.
@@ValJedi That's still the "wrong" way of doing it. Just export your video in the correct aspect ratio and let the TH-cam player display it best for the device. Adding black bars to a 16:9 is literally the worst option.
I think the body and menu alone would be worth it. Im always using my sIII for photography because it feels and controls so much nicer. I just hope all the new video stuff from the a7IV will be added to the a7sIII too like focus map or iso auto/manual switch
I’ve just ordered an a7iii to go along side my a9. Got it brand new for just over £1000. No way the upgrades of the a7iv justify double the price to me. For some it might, but I’d rather spend the difference on a decent lens.
Yeah, I'd just go with the A7RIV if I were to pay nearly double the price for it. I mostly shoot extreme focus stacked macro and that high resolution is pretty tempting for me, lol.
@@MomentousGaming got my A9 for 1600 this summer. I do wildlife so it's paired with the 200-600mm I want something I can keep a wide angle or 35mm prime on and the a7iii is perfect for that.
@@TomPhotoix also an a9 user. it was super great as long as u dont need video performance and high megapixel count. AF are still awesome now, resolution is enough for use, but the price was so cheap (at this tier), it was a no brainer.
Another option is keep the A7III and spend the $1500 or so it'll cost to upgrade (with a trade-in) on a lens that solves a photographic issue... Also the A7rIV is discounted down to about $500 above the A7IV at the moment. Oh and for sports types a used A9/A9II might be worth considering...
for stills shooting, a7iii is enough. amount of it was so high, many good second hand deals now, 1000~1100USD in my region for a clean, nice looking second hand camera. if you want high mp with decent autofocus and 10fps shooting, a7r3 is also still great. sports, a9 is quite affordable and had animal eye AF + tracking available. Honestly unless you do video, dont really commend a7iv
Honestly, the only reason to upgrade to the A7 IV is if you feel the the shutter on your A7 III is on the verge. Otherwise the improvements are marginal and you will more than likely not feel or see much difference. Image wise, as other reviewers have stated they are pretty much identical.
This Video made me feel secure about my decision. I got my A7III for $100 more than an A7C. Coming from a DSLR (non-articulating screen), I’m focused on mastering the many functions as the menus are quite daunting. It’s gonna be a while but so far my pics are improving. Love the compact body and it’s so well built. Thanks Sony and DPReview and to BH for my good deal! 👍
Love my A7III...it has served me well over the past couple years, but I do believe I must take the jump. I'm very much a "hybrid shooter"...I do pretty equal parts photo and video. So the bump in resolution would be great for photos and the video upgrades are QUITE substantial...I think it's gotta happen!!
Fair assessment. I agree, image quality is very similar. $800 price bump for better AF and usability makes more financial sense for people who use this as their daily camera to earn a living. If you're only a light commercial or consumer user then it will come down to if you have deeper pockets and money isn't an issue, then by all means get the newer camera.
The articulating screen, coloured focus square, bump in resolution, better autofocus, better weather sealing, better grip, better buttons and more customisable……I bought the a7iv and kept my beloved a7iii…..win win.
Love the footage. Not sure how much post processing or colour grading Jordan has done here but it really looks fantastic almost at real cinematic -Hollywood level. Well done. Regardless A74 who already owns A73 this camera won.t make you better photographer.Better invest in some nice GM lenses or at least Sigma Art lenses 85 1.4-135 1.8-24-70 etc.
10-bit video makes this a no-brainer 3rd camera for wedding work, alongside our A7SIIIs. Thanks for the confirmation, because this is my first pre-ordered camera ever!
So many professionals shoot wedding video on 8-bit cameras, and it's fine. I doubt clients would be able to tell the difference. The extra dynamic range that SLog3 provides could come in handy sometimes, but I don't think it's going to make or break a wedding video. I guess if you are using the a7S III, then that could be good for matching. I would only consider 10-bit truly necessary for real cinematic work.
@@danieldougan269 We currently use the A7C as our third camera, and when you compare the 8-bit from it, to the 10-bit SLOG3 from the A7SIII there is a huge difference in color grading. I'm hoping you aren't confusing wedding videos of 7 years ago, with wedding films today. What does "REAL cinematic work" imply? I will happily take and work with SLOG3 footage over 8-bit. It's not much more work in post, and the resulting image, especially at 4k is much more refined. In my mind the client may not be able to tell a difference, but they might be able to sense it; much like over-cranking vs the 180* rule. Plus, at least on the A7SIII, the 10-bit SLOG3 allows us to use the clean 12800 ISO. That IS 100% worth it in all the crazy low-light situations we find ourselves in on a regular basis. We DO light receptions and as much other scenes on the day as we can, but weddings are incredibly fast-paced, and the ability to crank my ISO in SLOG3, especially with the flexibility of 10-bit makes an absolute WORLD of difference. If you don't believe me, you are welcome to watch our wedding films from this year, versus those from last year. I'm willing to bet you can see a difference.
Nice comparison. I’m definitely a candidate. I still use my old a7ii so it will be a worthwhile upgrade to skip the iii and go for the iv. I shoot architectural photography at least 4 days a week, 8 to 10 hours a day so any little improvement is a big deal. As capable as the a7iii is, the extra programmable control wheel will eliminate the need to use that fiddly little back wheel, the extra digital stabilizing, better autofocus with more options, touch screen with option to shut it out, higher megapixels and curtain cover for lens changes is more than enough to make me jump to the iv. It’s no contest. 😉
Great informative / succinct video as always guys. One comment - I personally was able to shoot *400-500* compressed RAW at 10 fps in my testing without any buffering (when shooting only to the CF-A card). I've no doubt the actual slow down point is much higher than this too (as is advertised by Sony) I just gave up around 500 out of boredom 😅. I'm not sure exactly what methodology you guys were using (maybe you were bottle-necked by shooting redundant RAW to the second slower slot?), but just thought I'd clear that up for anyone searching the comments ❤
Andrew is Sony Fanboys. Sony a7iv win over Canon eos r6 for megapixels. Sony a7iv loss with Canon eos r6 in so many like 20fps in Electronic shutter, 12fps in mechanical shutter. 4k60p only 1.01 crop. Lcd display Resolution. Body durability. Color science. Less mechanical shutter sound, low light performance. Shame on Sony
@Ail'enduril The new CF-A cards are brilliant to use on the a7S III, a1 and now a7 IV - shooting on all 3 of those cameras it's like there *_practically_* isn't a buffer at all. Obviously the card cards are still expensive, but the card slots being reverse compatible means you can use your current cards until prices come down / third parties (SanDisk, Lexar etc) start making the CF-A cards!
@@pematamang9268 Calm your tats down man, he didn't compare A7iv with any other camera. He is just pointing his own finding about a feature which have been missleaded in the video.
This is pretty much always the answer, it is not worthwile to jump from one generation to the next. It was true before, it is still true now. And it's even more true on the Sony platform where the release schedule is so fast, even if it has slowed a bit. It's better just to wait 2 generations then jump, or switch lineup (like going from a7 to a7r or a1).
Something missing from the review: full LA-EA5 compatibility on the IV vs the III. If you want to use the classic Minolta lenses (80-200/2.8 HS cough cough) without a SLT mirror, you would need to buy the A7RIV (both) or the A1 (or a6600 for crop).
It's weird that they didn't even mention they downgrade from 10fps to 5fps for uncompressed raw, especially considering they recommended upgrading if you are doing sports or wildlife.
Because they're paid by Sony. I hate LCD Resolution, only 5fps uncompressed Raw, Rolling shutter, Distortion in Electronic shutter, 8bit only, soft look FHD 120p. Canon eos r6 win over A7IV with 4k60p less crop like 1.01. 20fps in Electronic shutter. Lcd display Resolution. Color science. I will lens than upgrading this camera
If you get a chance to watch our review of the A7iv itself we absolutely mention this fact. However as a comparison between the older and latest version of the A7 we wanted to show both at there fastest.
I had A7RII and while I was planning to buy upcoming A7IV then suddenly i changed my mind and bought EOS R6. After one year I don't regret actually. My biggest complain to Sony is the aspect ratio option for the viewfinder. Cmooon Sony it is just one line of code. We need to adjust it. This is the biggest pros for electronic viewfinder. Anyway, R6 and R5 have this feature and I am totally satisfied. I think on the paper there is nothing better than R6. Maybe extra 10mp but nnneeeehhh, 20 is plenty enough.
I am hobby photographer so take the following for what it is worth. I do not have to earn my living from photography. I am over 60 and up until 2004 I shot with film. My camera was stolen and I invested in the new digital format. My first camera was a sony, 4mp almost point and shoot. My kids were young and the photos I got are priceless. I digress. I stayed with sony because they were always pushing the boundaries and I hated the big form and weight of a Dslr. However the fun of taking a photo was missing so 3 years ago I invested in the Fujifilm system. I have a sony A73 but I always took the Fujifilm XT3 or 100V (my desert island camera) for a day out. I tried the A7IV last month, ordered and received yesterday. The A73 is still a great camera but the A7IV with the improved handling has given back to me the pleasure of taking a photo. This is the first Sony camera I actually really enjoy the process of taking a photo and and I have have had many. Instead of thinking I am going somewhere nice, need to take a camera, now I have a camera, where can I go! Of all my subscriptions you two come first.
I have the A7iii and thought I'd be moving to the A7iv as soon as I could but with the information you guys provide I'm not feeling the urge to spend the money on it. For me the features and improvements that the A7iv provides are ones that I would seldom or never use since I use it mostly for wildlife, landscape, and travel. For me at least the A7iii is still fulfilling my needs. I appreciate these videos reinforcing the conclusions that I am already reaching. Keep up the good work.
Agree. If I was starting from scratch, I’d spend the $500 extra, but to trade-up factoring in depreciation, it’s likely $1,000-$1,500 more. Not worth it.
Since you stated that you ... "I use it mostly for wildlife, landscape, and travel." why did you originally believe ... "I'd be moving to the A7iv as soon as I could"
@@drwalka10 Good question. To boil it down to the essentials I thought that the increase in megapixels and the upgraded menu/touchscreen would sway me but the cost to make the change will be $1000+. Now sure there are a lot of other new features in the A7iv but most are in areas that I would rarely if ever see. I haven't ruled it out completely though. Once the newness of this model wears off and the price starts to be discounted I may be persuaded. Now If they had made getting my pictures out of the camera and onto my PC/phone/cloud automatic and seamless now that would be a game changer for me... Take my money.
What really impressed me with this review was the video quality of the GH5S, so much so that I didn't really listen too much to what you said about those Sony cameras. Time to upgrade from the G85 I suppose...
For me the shutter down function alone is worth it. Sensor dust spots are as annoying as roaches. No matter how hard you try to fix your unit, seal all the open ends, clean your trashcan as often as possible, as long as the building is infected they'll creep in. I even commented on previous DPreview's video where they had a very obvious dust spot during focus breathing test. So it is not about technique. As long as you let open that mount and remove all barriers before the sensor dust will get on it. Some people may be skeptical about using shutter to fence off stuff. But I say, it is only a step towards the right direction. You can always borrow the idea from Z9, and have a special mechanism in front of shutter to automatically come out as long as the mount is detecting a lens twist/off contact. I don't think that is a difficult problem to solve to humanity but instead a rather easy implementation. And honestly speaking I've had my EOS R5 for this long and I never really need to "poke" my shutter while swaping lens in a hurry. Nor do I shoot in condition where hard particles can end up inside the camera.
Thanks for the video but what I don't understand about most all side-by-side reviews is the talk is always about "features", rather than what I would think a [ camera ] is all about - [ IMAGE QUALITY ]. What or which or neither or both camera PRODUCES THE SHARPEST CLEANEST IMAGES?? This is the primary feature of a camera........this has ALWAYS been the most important feature of all cameras since time beginning. And when appraising image quality, one should compared apples to apples, meaning one should use the same, comparable leans on both cameras testing.
Excellent video! 9:20 describes my situation in considering which to buy and I am so impressed you included this little section, along with really good points throughout the video. Subscribed.
Nice compare but (there has to be i guess). There are also many things that might make someone happy from the much improved ftp en networking options. The wifi and usb-c upgrade (including faster charging), new menu system, full hdmi, 4 channel audio input etc etc. I would personally take your list and then add $10 for each small feature you like and soon you will find it makes sense to upgrade if you can get your hands on one and sell the A7III when it still has value. two important ones would be a new shutter design (since the A7III is the worst shutter sony has made the last decade) and future updates the A7IV has the new dual XR chipset and runs the same platform as the S3 and A1 so we can expect more upgrades and the A7III to get very few new updates from now on. If you enjoyed your A7III for the last few years it makes even more sense to upgrade to extend that feeling by knowing you have the followup that will make you ready for 3 more years at least. I might get one myself as a backup to my A1 since many of the features now overlap.
It was a tough choice coming from breaking my r3 not knowing if I should go r4 or for this. I choose this and I'm hoping I don't regret my decision. *Update* I regretted my decision. Lol I returned it after having front focusing issues and problems with the SD card door. My images were very soft
I bought the A7iii 3 years ago for 12000, the A7iv is selling at 19000. That's insane. The increase is equivalent to over 1000 USD extra. I want one but not that badly haha
That flip out screen would finally slow me to vlog, even though I don't do that, but want to. When I did, I was always worried it was not in focus or framed right... But it's also very helpful for my photography! I just don't like how the C1 & C2 button layout has changed. Odd that one is in a different spot. And the added MP is perfect! Not very high, but much better than 24mp Would love to upgrade my A7iii for the A7iv
Loved it! But okay the X-T4 was better than the A7iii in a video you did a year ago. So how about a new: King of APS-C (X-T4) vs New entry level Sony Full frame A7 IV. Is the £1000 price difference worth it for the full frame? And yes I am ignoring the a7c as that has Sony's old menu system that no one cares for.
I shoot weddings and alot at that, it’s every weekend and some mid week. I use 2 a7iii’s and I don’t miss a shot so a faster autofocus isn’t what I need. I think I’ll invest in better glass before changing cameras. 85 or 135 🤔🤔
Very useful comparison - especially the part where you break it down between a new Sony buyer and the one looking for an upgrade from A7III. Thank you.
Atm I stay with my A6600, if A7IV got 4k60p without crop I would buy it already, cause I shoot basketball games fully in 50p. From the other hand I can shoot 4k/60 with my old APS-C lenses :).
I've been on the "budget is important" end of the purchasing decision ever since getting into photography as a hobby. If I was brand new to photography, I'd likely go for the least expensive thing that would meet my needs. Is that what I would recommend? No. For all things technology, I suggest spending the most one can afford to purchase the newest technology one can get then promptly, with care, use the daylights out of the gear. If you end up using said gear a lot, you'll be grateful to have good gear if you opt to upgrade years down the line. You would have also squeezed your money's worth out of it if you do use it a lot. I realize this philosophy won't work for everyone, but it might help some with their decision.
I don't see it that way. If you use the cam as a professional and do customer orders with it: yes, then maybe. But as an amateur who shoots a few videos on vacation, 8-bit is perfectly adequate. 99% of the people who watch videos from the A7III won't notice anything negative about the color anyway. The whole 10-bit discussion is pretty overhyped imo. 1500 dollar price difference is not worth it for an amateur.
In my opinion, the upgrade is only worth it if you are a professional. And then only if you need the video features. If you only use the A7III for stills, the upgrade is definitely not worth it. The A7III's auto-focus is still ahead of most of the other cameras in its price range. I've never had a camera before where I pressed the shutter and knew exactly: the focus will fit 99% of the time. I simply don't need more. Also, I find the whole 10bit discussion to be overhyped. Here on TH-cam, thousands of videos have been uploaded that were made with the A7III, and I bet hardly anyone has ever complained about the colors.
I'm a wedding photographer, and really can't see the need to upgrade, the 24mpxs are more than enough right now for my weddings, and for video I use 2 rx10iv which are just amazing, never overheat and great image quality, if only the A7iv had no cropped 4k 60p I'd thought about it, but for now my A7iii is still more than capable
@@emersonsantos0483 I've a Sony A7 (first gen) it has in my opinion good enough picture quality, but awful af and horrible battery life, but as it is only a second body, my a7iii has never failed until now, so I've barely use it, I mainly use the a7 first gen for non paid things, like family and friends stuff
The A7 IV is a great camera, but I'm more than happy with the A7iii and the upgrade would be too costly for me. I'd rather get other lenses in the system first.
@@drwalka10 What does it have to do with anything I said? I am not willing to pay about twice as much (considering I'd have to sell my A7III with quite a big loss) for what I consider minor improvements. Some people may have too much money, but others have too little patience.
@@drwalka10 He's not broke, he's prioritizing good glass over new camera features. That is usually a smart way to go. We all have budgets. Good lenses make more of a difference to your final output, and they hold their value more. The a7 IV, just like all camera bodies, will eventually be replaced by something even better, and that's when you can pounce on it on the used market.
Even if you get an A7III, it would be HUGE jump from an A7. And you can get the A7III for 1200 Dollar less than the A74. In terms of price/performance ratio, the A7III is the best you can get.
I came here for some Full Frame advice. The first shot (the desqueeze gag) I told me myself "see, THIS is the quality that I want!"... Then the screen went black and it said this episode was filmed on the Panasonic GH5S. My camera. The one I wanted to upgrade from. Mind blown
Great video as usual. Thx guys. I'm now facing a strange sitaution : i've got an old nikon (d300) and I want to switch system. And i really hesitate between the canon R6 or the the sony A 7IV. I prefer the sony's specs, but the canon lenses catalog (even with an adapter) is crazy big, you can find good deals with the second hand market etc. We'll see !
I don't agree the handling being an worthwhile upgrade at all. It's a comfortable body. There's nothing wrong with Sony's old menu when you got used to it. I agree the IQ is a worthwhile upgrade, but only because something you didn't mention - the A7IV has practically eliminated hot pixels in long exposures. Resolution and arguably better highISO aren't a big selling point. Although the AF is better, is it really that big of a difference??? I think the A7III tracks wonderfully and it's the only reason I bought the A7III. Getting marginally better AF really doesn't justify an upgrade. If it's your first A7 body? This is a stupid question, because it SOLELY depends on type of photography and the budget. We all know newer is better. You can get a used A7III for ~1300$. A new A7IV costs you ~2600$.
@@billy00001 It's definitely a matter of personal preference. I shot Pentax before Sony and am used to small bodies, especially the pinky being under the body - this way I have a finger on all 4 sides of the grip. Feels natural and extremely secure to me, unnatural to others. 6 months is rather long :P I'm sure you meant you never really bothered looking into what it meant until one day after 6 months you decided to look it up. I personally used the manual for some stuff too, especially how to customize buttons and set up eye-AF. But I also used my manual on Pentax when I first started learning and even later on. So... using a manual is rather normal, no? I have used Canon and Nikon on a few occasions and I can't say their menus were anyway better. They are all different. We just have to accept the simple fact: different manufacturer -> different menus. At this very moment I think it's fair enough. You have people with all kinds of budgets. But you won't find an cheap used A7IV unlike the A7III. ... pretty pointless discussion really :D at the end of the day, I'm not upgrading and when I do I'll have my own opinion that will differ from what DPReview says, as it should be. No one should base their buying decision on a single video or suggestion :)
Well I will choose only to comment about one fact stated in your response. You are absolutely and unequivocally awesome for choosing JC Denton as your profile pic. Let's leave it at that.
Great job structuring and delivering the content! You made some good summary as well! I am in your first category (buy A7 for the first time) and this video helped A LOT. Thanks!!!!
Tbh, the client doesnt really care even if you shoot in 1080. If clients wanted 4K then I'd be charging more, would be serving a different clientele and at that point, would probably be using a FX3 or A7S3 or a FX camera... and also would have to upgrade my PC and storage. But I'm not.. not doing that. Now that the A7III is more affordable, i can grab another one for like $1k used and have another angle to use in wedding shoots or get good glass like the 50mm 1.2 GM. Great video as always. Will just wait for the A7V. Sony is messing up with their lead right now by coming up with small improvements instead of something revolutionary like what they did with the A7III..
4:15 "33MP over 24 is a substantial increase". No it's not: sqrt(33/24) = 1.17 or 17% increase in linear resolution. Not really much at all from a theoretical standpoint (Nyquist Theorem). But if you don't trust theory, look again at 4:22 or better still, go to one of dpreview's test scenes and you'll only see marginal improvement between 42 and 24mp.
@@BrianTheCameraGuy I think most serious video folk will have already bought the a7siii or the a1 as a business investment/asset to write off against. A7iv shooters probably won't even go off the basic profiles and will shoot pics semi automatically. Just being honest.
If it would be my first A7 camera, I would still take the A7 III because of the huge price difference. The A7 III is 1.550€ with cashback in europe at the moment . The A7 IV is 2.800€! The A7 IV does only make sense if you do a lot of video. Even if I would do much more sports and action I would hesitate.
Great video as always. ONE QUESTION. I was offered a brand new A7R3 for $1900 . I used to have the 7R and loved it. Bought the Canon R5. HATE IT and thinking should I get the7 R3 or the A74? I only do travel / landscape photography!!!! Please HELP!!!
My wife's business is getting more video intense so I think we're gonna upgrade from the 3 to the 4 as a business expense. It's not an exciting update but it's meaningfully better at pretty much everything I shoot. Hard to follow up on the 3
Just returned my a7iv, that I waited months to get. Just sitting on my desk for 25 minutes the camera was so hot I couldn’t tough the bottom. The camera was on but not filming. I was working on the menus. Of course it’s on backorder again at B&H. Hope the next one is better
Another great review- especially the advice at the end. Personally, my clown hands are just too big for the Sony bodies, and my R6 is too comfortable to leave. The a7iv has brilliant specs, a wide array of lenses, and is going to make a lot of people really happy.
I got an A7S III as my upgrade from APS-C to full frame, but I'm finding 1) I'm not really shooting much video, 2) I feel somewhat hampered by the low still resolution, and 3) (kinda the same issue as 2) because the resolution is so low, I can't effectively re-use any of my APS-C glass. Considering selling it and getting an A7 IV. I'd miss the occasional 4k 120 clip, those always look epic, but like I said that's only an occasional thing for me. What I'm really wondering is if I'd be taking a step back in low light performance. I know they're not really comparable, but I'd greatly appreciate a comparison video between the A7S III and the A7 IV!
For absolute low light, you can't beat the A7s3. But the A74 is surprisingly great for low light. In fact on some ISO comparisons, the A74 had LESS noise than the A7s3. But when pushed to the maxes ( >12800) the A7s3 still beat out the A74 no doubt. So if you are looking at extreme low light conditions and is part of your routine work, I'd stick with the A7s3. But if your workflow deals mostly with occasional low lights, than the A74 would be the way to go. At the end, I think the added versatility of the higher pixel count in beefing up the photo capability of the A74 and the remarkably improve low light performance of the A74 is a great choice. The only that currently concerns me is the occasional overheating issue that I've been hearing about people say about the A74.
I own a Panasonic Gh5 and I want a Sony A7 for milky way photography. So which one is the best for that? - The fully articulated screen of the A7IV is a great reason for me to choose it since most pictures are vertical and with the cam pretty close to the ground. many thanks !!
Before IV, the III was go to for professionals... slight changes and upgrades came up now suddenly its an occasional camera.
I'm a Canadian who's been living in Japan for over 15 years...the pond hockey portion had me rolling!! Thank you guys!
May i ask you.. Why you left Canada
Few years = 4 years
I love very Canadian Chris, more of him please.
And also today's episode looks great, more anamorphic in the future 😍
Agreed!
Just dropping a comment to say that the framing and grade at 4:52 looks absolutely gorgeous. That is all.
I came to say the same.
Shot on GH5S with anamorphic lens.
That anamorphic look
Never have I ever felt more rewarded for excusing a commentary segue in a review. Had a good laugh, Chris does a great Canadian impression.
Cheers!
I'm thinking of trading my A7r4 for the A74.
Nice video. I'm still very happy with my A7III. It does everything I need and the image quality is very good.
I rather spend the money on new lens(es).
Same here.
Just wanted to say the Vazen Anamorphic Lens made this video look very pleasing and filmic. I hope you use it in future. For those with 21x9 screens, would it be possible to crop the black borders for a full-screen presentation?
Yea when I saw the anamorphic video I moved the window to my ultrawide... was so disappointed 🤦♂️
well, it comes without any bars right from the camera. the guys added it to play it safe of variety of devices supported by youtube. otherwise, natively you get double your sensor width frame size.
@@ValJedi That's still the "wrong" way of doing it. Just export your video in the correct aspect ratio and let the TH-cam player display it best for the device. Adding black bars to a 16:9 is literally the worst option.
I didn’t pay attention to anything Chris said, just enjoyed the anamorphic wide video experience. It’s something about it
I think the body and menu alone would be worth it. Im always using my sIII for photography because it feels and controls so much nicer. I just hope all the new video stuff from the a7IV will be added to the a7sIII too like focus map or iso auto/manual switch
what makes the s version better for you?
I just wanna thank you guys for freezing your asses off again and again to keep us all warm and well informed. Cheers from sunny California ⛄️
Used A9 goes for just under £1900, about £500 less than a A7IV, for event/sports shooters (non-video) it's a much better deal.
@@MomentousGaming does the A9 have an AA filter on the sensor?
So the bump in resolution would be great for photos and the video upgrades are QUITE substantial...I think it's gotta happen!!
use canon r6
@@djicj4643 Nope. The overheating is a deal breaker. 20MP sucks, too.
Nice video guys! Jordan - loving the Vazen lenses on the GH5. Any chance we can get a review on those?
They already have a review up of the 40mm on the GH5
Fair assessment. I agree, image quality is very similar. $800 price bump for better AF and usability makes more financial sense for people who use this as their daily camera to earn a living. If you're only a light commercial or consumer user then it will come down to if you have deeper pockets and money isn't an issue, then by all means get the newer camera.
The articulating screen, coloured focus square, bump in resolution, better autofocus, better weather sealing, better grip, better buttons and more customisable……I bought the a7iv and kept my beloved a7iii…..win win.
A cam. B cam 😍
Reminder that the core video was shot on GH5s
GH5s was Jordans baby

When I have a question about a camera, I always check to see if you have a video out about it before anything else. Love your content!
3:09 - such great Canadiana! I felt like I was watching Bob & Doug…
I'm not sure exactly what methodology you guys were using (maybe you were bottle-necked by shooting redundant RAW to the second slower slot?), but just thought I'd clear that up for anyone searching the comments ❤
that's impressive! That tiny bump in the buffer sure left me wondering.
More fps vs high buffer? What is different? More fps capture most moments but more buffer doesn't capture every moment.
I jumped from the a6400 to the sony a7iv and absolutely am in love.
Looking forward to the review of the Vazen lenses
good review and i agree with everything except the iso/noise performance. every test chart and image comparison shows the a7iii has less noise.
Lossless compressed though!!
@@906Roofer Lossless and uncompressed raw. this camera is not worth to upgrade from previous model.
@@pematamang9268 I have an A7RII so for me it will be!
The GH5S footage looks really nice Jordan.
"I use it mostly for wildlife, landscape, and travel."
why did you originally believe ...
Here is my dilemma: should I spend the money on the a7IV or a new MacBook Pro which can blaze through video editing from the Sony cams? What to do?
I am thinking the same thing, hmmm not sure what to do.
What really impressed me with this review was the video quality of the GH5S, so much so that I didn't really listen too much to what you said about those Sony cameras. Time to upgrade from the G85 I suppose...
Diggin the results on that Anamorphic lens! What gloves are you guys wearing, I recently just ordered some from Vallerret.
I have a7c is it worth the upgrade. awesome video guys .
Great video, you should do Sony A7 IV vs. Panasonic s5
$2499 can buy me some exotic glass if I chose to stick with my existing A7III. Thanks guys, your review just prevented this 💸!
What did you decide on instead?
I bought the A7iii 3 years ago for 12000, the A7iv is selling at 19000. That's insane. The increase is equivalent to over 1000 USD extra. I want one but not that badly haha
Whooo! The GH5s looks glorious 🙌 gonna go hug my GH5 and G9s lol been neglecting them for the Sonys lately
I was thinking the same. Why do i need a fullframe when M43 delivers such a punch??
All well and good, but the best part of this video is definitely Chris gloves!
Not very high, but much better than 24mp
Would love to upgrade my A7iii for the A7iv
For me shooting birds and wildlife I believe the keeper rate will be better with the advanced auto focus of the A74 over the a7r models
I shoot weddings and alot at that, it’s every weekend and some mid week. I use 2 a7iii’s and I don’t miss a shot so a faster autofocus isn’t what I need. I think I’ll invest in better glass before changing cameras. 85 or 135 🤔🤔
Couldn't listen to what was said in the video because the shots were all so beautiful! Well done!
Man that anamorphic is NICE. Need to get more of that on TH-cam vids.
Loving the GH5S video colors. Great stuff
Very useful comparison - especially the part where you break it down between a new Sony buyer and the one looking for an upgrade from A7III. Thank you.
I'm contemplating side stepping from the a7Riii mainly for bird eye AF and real time tracking. Coloured focus point is a bonus.
I realize this philosophy won't work for everyone, but it might help some with their decision.
lol.....
Great video! You should also mention that the A7IV does 10bit video, that's a huge selling point for many people.
I'd 100% go for the A7 IV. The A7III is still an excellent camera, but for video it's lack of 10-bit color is a real dealbreaker.
What’s the 2nd camera do you use for your weddings?
@@emersonsantos0483 I've a Sony A7 (first gen) it has in my opinion good enough picture quality, but awful af and horrible battery life, but as it is only a second body, my a7iii has never failed until now, so I've barely use it, I mainly use the a7 first gen for non paid things, like family and friends stuff
The A7 IV is a great camera, but I'm more than happy with the A7iii and the upgrade would be too costly for me. I'd rather get other lenses in the system first.
So you're broke ...
Totally agree (I think Sony priced it way to high, especially in Europe). The money I save will go towards the 50mm 1.2 GM.
@@drwalka10 very odd comment buddy. Why?
I don’t upgrade often. So the real question is, is it worth it going from the original a7 to the a7iv? I would assume yes.
Even if you get an A7III, it would be HUGE jump from an A7. And you can get the A7III for 1200 Dollar less than the A74. In terms of price/performance ratio, the A7III is the best you can get.
How bout between A7Riii or a7iv?
It's just so good when you explain the things outdoor.

Very well structured and commented video. Awesome work guys!
Great job structuring and delivering the content! You made some good summary as well! I am in your first category (buy A7 for the first time) and this video helped A LOT. Thanks!!!!
Video looking so good, Jordan!
GH5s video quality is amazing here !
You videos shot on your Panasonic always look extremely good.
Great video guys. Would love to have an a7c vs a7iv comparison
I haven't seen many of these, think Sony may have barred them because they are super similar and a7c is much cheaper especially a used one
@@karaokekingskingdom it is cheaper but the video upgrade to 10 bit is pretty big.
@@BrianTheCameraGuy I think most serious video folk will have already bought the a7siii or the a1 as a business investment/asset to write off against. A7iv shooters probably won't even go off the basic profiles and will shoot pics semi automatically. Just being honest.
A real photographer DON'T NEED expensive cameras.
Great video, as always 👍 Already curious to see a comparision between Sony, Canon and Nikon 🤩
Really well done video! Love the ranking system...Great work guys!
My wife's business is getting more video intense so I think we're gonna upgrade from the 3 to the 4 as a business expense. It's not an exciting update but it's meaningfully better at pretty much everything I shoot. Hard to follow up on the 3
dope video man, love the work you put into this guys! merry xmas!
I probably will end up upgrading but my A7iii still has plenty of money to be made with it. That 10bit video would be nice
Guys, your sketches in between are so funny, I could totally imagine you both making a short film!
man, this video from GH5s and the Vazen lens..... is so good!
Will pick it up, time to upgrade the a7iii, and have two cameras is always good.
I would like to see a Canon R6 vs Sony A7iv video.
Jared Polin tested them and says even the R8 beats the a7iv
The IV doesn’t seem to have blackout on the af test. That seems like a big advantage for the viewfinder experience
5:38 That's just a preview of the image taken in my oponion, Z6 does that in H+ mode (black out free )
