12:37 look at that special animation when Fio touches the ground while flying... it's something most developers wouldn't even think about, but SNK went all-out with their pixel art back then. It's so small and unnecessary when you think about it, but it's those small things that made the franchise what it is

totally, it has such a strong materiality to all the elements, animations are expressive and personal yet very functional, and the blend between grit/cartoon is perfect

Okay I may be wrong but I dont think theres no glitches in MS3
Kinda ignorant take since a lot of the glitches also take a tremendous amount of skill to pull off
@@swevery I don't think veknuns meant that glitches take no skill,The impression I got was that optimal play using the games intended mechanics are what make this run so special. I personally love both aspects of speed running as they both can make or break a run depending on the game.
It's Hilarious that all but last level only takes 10 min and last Level almost takes double than that!

The soundtrack on this game is so epic.
This guy is INSANE
It's not on the same difficulty that you'd experience at an arcade (these games have lots of difficulty tiers that the cabinet operator can choose from when setting up the game for customers), but it's still a very good speed run.
@@Nicholas_Steel true, the OG neo geo difficulty is "level 4", the steam default difficulty is the equivalent of the neo geo's "level 3", a tad easier
@@theYTfox the difficulty i did is level4. steam's medium difficulty is set on level 4
Absolutely incredible run, not only was he translating on the fly but was self commentating during a practically deathless metal slug run. Just insane!
Meanwhile it takes me 1 and a half hours to beat metal slug 3 with 68 continues

the ONLY thing th's keeping this game from being 10/10 is the fact that you cant shoot up while standing still (like in cuphead). Also, having to pay for each 3 lives in an arcade was brutal, because the game was hard and great.
I love the slighty gore in this game. Btw: I downloaded the MS Anthology for PS4 after seeing this. Great games.

What are the rules for this run ? The continue loss at 07:20 should have restarted the game. Am I the only one puzzled by this ?
Geese BoltR Why should it restart the game? Never have ever Metal Slug games done that. It gives you an option to continue. In arcade it meant putting in more coins.
Idk... it is an arcade game. If you die you just put in a new quarter to continue without having to restart.
Simple, the only aim of these runs is end the game asap. If the game give you infinite continues, you take advantage of that (to receive bombs or a heavy machine gun for example). I imagine that there are categories where you can't use continues.

I'm surprised by the use of the Steam MS3.
I'd imagine because emulators are not allowed (unless it's a retail emulator like the Steam version lol) and Metal Slug 3 cartridge and the Neo Geo are extremely expensive and probably didn't want to travel with it even if he had one.

Steam version. The game is mainly ran through the steam version, but there is the emulator version, and winkwiz which has overclocked CPU to make it lag less.
