  • Instead of being a light hearted episode about people stealing a super abundant resource, instead this ends up being pretty much just about mafia murders. If you LOVE murder, this one is worth a watch. And who doesn't LOVE murder?

    Back in the day I worked in a jewelry store, we were just a ma and pa shop nothing to big but I enjoyed the job.
    To make a long story short I had become the senior sales associate (aka the only sales associate) and my boss allowed me to help the more wealthy customers. For a few years this older gentleman would come into the store around September and order a bunch of pocket watches with us and have us engrave initials on them for people retiring from the company he owns.
    Finally after about the third time he came into the store I finally asked him what kind of company it was he owned.
    “Sand boy, I deal in sand.”
    And I was astonished this man who had spent a good amount of money in that store made all of his money owning a large sand supply company.

    Here in the States, my nephew works for a company that mines sand from former river channels (created when a river meanders around a river valley, leaving behind channels that were cut off from the main river as it moved around. I’ve worked in QC in the concrete industry for a decade. Unless there’s an issue with alkali-silica reactivity, which is an issue in places like NJ and can reduce the functional lifespan of concrete by 30-50%, jobs often use manufactured fine aggregate. It’s essentially the same limestone used as coarse aggregates in concrete, but processed to pass the fine gradation test standards for sand.

    I know it sounds crazy, but when I deployed to Iraq the first time, I was so surprised by the texture of the sand. It was like baby powder. The only reason I noticed it so quickly was probably because of how much I'd been told about it beforehand. That's right folks, the US military is talking about sand texture behind closed doors.

    • @hawlitakerful
      @hawlitakerful 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Isn't ground texture actually a rather important thing to discuss in a military way like how easy one can you cross a spot of land with heavy armored vehicles for example?

    • @ColeyDuncan
      @ColeyDuncan 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@hawlitakerful Yes, when you're going to be going on convoys, that's something that's somewhat addressed. But even with that, it's basically telling you to stay in the middle of the road and away from the shoulder. Sadly, too many people are lucky enough to avoid injuries from IEDs and gunfights, to be severely injured or killed because the driver is overworked and exhausted, then loses focus for a few seconds and there's a rollover. Unless everyone else in the vehicle is on point and remembers rollover drills, a gunner likely won't walk away. But the people who receive that training are those who will be doing convoys. A great deal of people (probably the majority) never leave the base until they go home and will never convoy. But anyone who has ever been to Iraq can tell you about how powdery the sand is. It's that much different than anywhere most have ever seen.

    Most building concrete is made with: Portland cement, sand, aggregate, additives, and water. You can swop sand with crushed stone, if need be. Thin veneer concrete is made without aggregate and as such can have a higher per portion of sand. Cement tends to be the lowest proportion of concrete with, depending on the mix, aggregate typically being the highest percentage as the aggregate are is what gives the strength. Sand, or stone dust, fills the voids and thins the mix allowing it to be made less expensive. Additives or add mix are things that can be added for strength, like fiberglass, Kevlar, or stainless steel fibers or chemicals like accelerators and bonding agents to help setting time and adhesion. You can also add lime to the mix which can add flexibility; lime, cement, and sand along with water makes mortar with the sand functioning as the aggregate.

  • @dannyharbour3951
    @dannyharbour3951 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Desert sand grains are too smooth thereby making it worthless for cement. Sand created by water is irregular shaped making it better for cement because it wouldn't crumble like desert sand would. It's similar to when you get a tooth crowned the dentist will make the tooth to be crowned really jagged so the adhesive will hold on a lot longer.

    Bonus fact: Ancient Rome had a stronger concrete that was better underwater than modern concrete. We have not been able to replicate their formula, but make up for our lack of such strength with rebar reinforcements. -Btw, this is yet another incident where an advanced technology existed in the past, that has been lost. This is seen a lot in ancient megalithic constructions, where counterintuitively the older technology is more sophisticated than the later technology, such as in Mayan constructions

    Also if you plan to cast you own statue you would need a 1+1+1 mix so it can be super smooth

    When concrete is made it is as strong as its bonding agents so hard rocks make stronger concrete and sand is the stuff that the concrete binds to the recipe being 6 shovels sand, 4 shovels rock and 2 shovels concrete mix. From this we can see that sand is the primary grit of concrete and the most prevalent agent showing the importance of it, rounded rounded objects are easier dislodged from binding like trying to make a brick wall of rounded bricks or like trying to pull a ball out of the mud instead of a root. By this we can visualize why sharp angled uneven grains are preferred to soft rounded grains.

  • @todayonthebench
    @todayonthebench 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    For mixing concrete, one can also use crushed rocks. (aka gravel. (downside, it isn't as small particles as sand, but just crush it some more...))
    Sand isn't really "needed". And technically, one could just stuff a bunch of desert sand and sinter it together before breaking it up again, giving one a far coarser material.
    Though, downside with sintering desert sand is that it takes a fair bit of energy, and crushing rocks isn't really hassle free either...
    For glass production, one needs a clean source of silica on the other hand, so desert sand isn't a good option, since cleaning out the impurities is expensive as hell...

      and today we learned that desert sand is less coarse than beach or ocean sand. I would have assumed the opposite, that the tides would be a constant smoothing rock tumbler, while the desert was more gritty with less wearing wind/sandstorms.

    Sand is also used for making computers. Specifically sand is silicon dioxide which is reduced to impure silicon, then grown into a huge crystal, then zone refined before being turned into wafers to turn into chips.

    If anything, the situation is much worse than how you describe it. Several poor countries are seeing mass excavation, for example Cambodia and Vietnam are experiencing massive dredges working up and down the Mekong, removing vast quantities of sand, ruining the local ecosystem for the fishing industry, causing riverbanks to collapse with losses of life in the cities etc. It is utterly illegal in both countries, but due to how economics works, the government institutions suposed to watch and monitor such events are easily payed off and, the end result being that this just goes on and on.
    The last ten years or so China is the largest purchaser of sand, in just ten years they made more concrete than what was used in the US for the entire 20th century and as you say, concrete is mostly sand...

    No joke. There is a huge market for it. In Northern Michigan, the summer people will pay big money for sand from the local beaches to make their own private beaches at their summer homes, for example making their "beachfront" larger because technically no beach is private if it is between the water and high water mark, but rather is public. So they can have a private beach, these people will pay hundreds of thousands for sand to be illegally hauled and installed above the natural shoreline to have a private beach.
    The joke is on them, though, as much of the natural beach will erode, and their private beach will become the public access within a decade or two.
