Not me, watching a _bunch_ of DnD Beginner videos because I am about to join my first session ever and I logically *know* that as a beginner I don't have to be perfect but I also have just met the people in my new dorm and know that at least the DM is very experienced and am fearing that I am the only one who doesn't know a thing about DnD despite the fact that I _do_ .... I should really stop worrying, I have been searching for a DnD group for _years_ and finally found one! I myself love creating stories, worlds, and most of all, in-depth characters, I am able to visualise scenes and environment easy and all of this should help me perfectly to get around... I should really stop worrying, in 1/2h we will meet for Session 0 🙈

For newer people, he really isn't kidding about how readily most groups accept and help out new people. It's a very welcoming hobby and everyone is generally happy to help and happy to see new people interested in the game. I've been playing for like 3 yrs now, online and almost every group has been that way. The one issue with getting groups on roll20 sometimes is that they can fall apart pretty easily sometimes. Either the dm panics and thinks they are over their head, the group synergy isn't there, or a player or two aren't committed and it can lead to a domino effect. Don't give up though. I've found multiple groups that are gems with a lot of great people. One game from there I've been playing for nearly 2 1/2 yrs and another group is over a year in. So have patience and don't give up. The game that is nearly 3 yrs in also had a very rough start btw. At first only me and 1 other stuck around after other players left. There was a spinning door for a few sessions (maybe 4-5) then we got the rest to the group foundations. The dm was on the ball about immediately recruiting more people when 2 bailed early on. So even if it looks like a domino, perhaps try and stay to see if dm will try and recover
3 years?! I'm just researching this gsme cause it always peaked my interest, but how does that work? Is it simply because there wasn't enough people to play the campaign? And how do you get people that are coming in caught up on the 3 year story?
I have had the opposite experience. Not saying they aren't *trying* to accept newbies, just that most people aren't equipped to train anyone else, or frankly even capable of understanding how someone else needs to learn. They will overwhelm you with information, expect you to intuitively know shit well beyond beginner level, give several conflicting and confusing explanations for the same thing simultaneously, expect you to understand the books as written (which, I don't), and a lot of people are simply impatient about the session coming to a halt for minutes at a time to catch the new guy up or answer his questions - but then when said new guy shoots in the dark because he still has no idea what any of his options are, what they do, and what ramifications they have on himself, everyone else, the campaign and world at large, they complain about that.

I played D&D a lot when I was a kid. I had an entire folder full of characters. I really loved how involved and detailed it was. Our friend up the street was the Dungeon master and taught us how to play. He had all the dice and a huge basement we would set up tasks.
My first dnd character was a goblin wizard/fighter they had a extremely powerful staff that allowed them to use magic barely and they would cast maul their face off
My son (b 1980) was a HUGE DnD kid, starting in about 5th grade. There was an older boy up the street who acted as DM for all the kids who wanted to play. He (DM) was socially awkward, didn't have many friends his age, overweight, the whole ball of challenges. He was also the kindest, most understanding & patient young man I ever met. I LOVED him & how he (&his parents) made a safe space for all the slightly weird, nerdy, not-like-all-the-others kids. I've ❤❤❤ DnD people ever since. (gawd, now I'm crying lol}

I'm using that starter kit to introduce my group to DnD. I started with an encounter I made to introduce them to combat, even writing a story based on the outcome, and now we're going through the starter kit, using the premade characters, then on another starter kit, they're going to make their own characters. They're enjoying it so far. :)
Yesterday i was feeling down and sad so what did i do? I watched so many of your videos and shorts. After about 30 minutes i felt a lot better. Thanks Duke for helping to brighten my days so often!!!
This is a pretty good quick, but cohesive guide. I’m not sure exactly where you would put it, but there is one stumbling block in the character creation process that I would always mention two new players, which is that the proficiencies that you get from your background a static, but the proficiencies that you get from your class are changeable, so I would always suggest that new players choose their class, then the background and fill out their background before filling out the details of the class. It’s a bit backwards I know, but it runs more smoothly.

It's a common mistake and a lie to claim that 5e is easy for people to learn; it's not. It's a game full of bloat and rules that aren't rule-lite or even close to being easy to learn. There are other game systems in this same genre that are a million times easier to pickup and learn than 5e is.

The best way of starting is to find someone who played before as a DM, it is way easier that way. Maybe putting up a note at the local gaming store that you and your friends like to try and ask for a DM, we DMs usually like that. I for one don't really need the players to know the rules when they start playing, learning while you play can be rather fun and the basic 5th edition rules are rather easy to pick up as you play. If that isn't possible, the beginners box is the easiest way to go around. It will be a bit harder since DMing can be a bit tough when you start, not only do you need to understand the rules but you also need to juggle your players so everyone is having fun and not one or 2 does all the talking. As a DM, creating your own world and stories can be incredible fun but that also takes a bit of experience to get right and no 2 DMs are exactly the same. The entire point of roleplaying games is to have fun together, so you don't have to go too far into rules as long as everyone are enjoying themselves. The first time with an entirely new group can be a bit awkward even with a good and experienced DM but most people tend to get into things rather quickly so don't be nervous. :) And talk with your DM if something doesn't feel fun. Roleplaying games can be run in many ways and not everyone enjoys all of those variants. D&D isn't the only game either, there are other games, both fantasy games and other genres, like horror, western, sci-fi and many others which can have very simple or very advanced rules but D&D is pretty easy to get into so it is a great starting point. If you instead want something more modern (in the setting), then Call of Cthulhu is a good alternative to start with. It also have rather easy rules and it is pretty easy to find an experienced Keeper that can run a one shot for new players there.
As someone who has been playing since '04 it didn't help much, but it was clear snd concise with some humor to make it sound like a great hobby to try.

I literally opened roll20 the very first time in my fucking life and rolled the dice in the tutorial...got a 20!!, THE VERY FIRST TIME I ROLLED THE DICE AND GOT A 20!!

Total damage atm is 4+1d4 / dart. If he has 14 on dexterity, he gets a hit bonus of 2. To hit: 2+1d20>=19, damage: 4+1d4. This gives about a 15% chance to hit and on a hit it deals 6.5 hp damage on average. Overall, 0.975 dmg per dart. So to take down the dragon, you need an expected number of either 263 turns, or 263 people to throw the darts simultaneously. There is a way to calculate a 95% success probability on the first try and how many darts you'd need, but I'm too lazy to compute that rn. I just think it's funny.

I'm a 12 year old boy who lives in a small town in a country where the D&D player's handbook costs as much as a fckn house. My town doesn't have any gaming stores too. And I am 101% sure that everyone in my town doesn't know what D&D is (mostly because they don't believe in dragons, fiction or mythology) so I can only rely on the internet to teach me about this game. (Edit: I have question, what happens to your characters when you make a new session? Do you just make a new character and story every session or do you stick with that character as basically your oc for the rest of the sessions?)
As the years went on in D and D I have seen that the game has become more evil and evil becoming really dominate! It is a good thing I quit D and D because it debases the people playing it! And it creates a warped sense of really in people and are ruled by it in their lives and lose all sense what is really going on in the world! Thinking About Trying It, Don’t Really Have Friends BUT I Know My Character’s Race And SOME Stats.
Anyone wants a newbie? Tales from the Stinky Dragon really made me interested in DnD but I am struggling.
I downloaded DnD Beyond and tried to create a druid, went to my local library and rented the basic books.. but I need help to 1st learn the game and 2nd find people to play with...
Bewarned, it is totally normal to spend 5 hours on making your 1st character and still not sure what you've actually made. But, surprisingly making one is fun. I never get to play one even though I've made plenty. Cries in being a forever DM.

I have a question! Once you make your charater understand the given rules and so on, where do you play? Beacuse the group make a story themselvs right? Do you play and rool the dice on a platform or…?
I'm so delusional for thinking I can just create a oneshot with my own rules based on my little dnd knowledge... Despite never having played let alone dmed myself and neither have the friends I'm trying to make it for :')))
I've JUST bought my first dice set so the starter set feels kind of like a waste. I have heard there are plenty of other pre-made oneshots suitable for beginners but I'm wondering if maybe anyone here has recommendations in that area?
Probably gonna try to make my own and disregard how it's probably not going to be balanced at all but oof...

I'm a 12 year old boy who lives in a small town in a country where the D&D player's handbook costs as much as a fckn house. My town doesn't have any gaming stores too. And I am 101% sure that everyone in my town doesn't know what D&D is (mostly because they don't believe in dragons, fiction or mythology) so I can only rely on the internet to teach me about this game.
(Edit: I have question, what happens to your characters when you make a new session? Do you just make a new character and story every session or do you stick with that character as basically your oc for the rest of the sessions?)
You could keep the character that you already made or you could change it however it could get boring playing the same character for a long time
As the years went on in D and D I have seen that the game has become more evil and evil becoming really dominate! It is a good thing I quit D and D because it debases the people playing it! And it creates a warped sense of really in people and are ruled by it in their lives and lose all sense what is really going on in the world!

Players, do not go into D and D and waste your life in vain imagination that takes you from truth of life and God! Accept Christ and repent of such self-destructive thoughts that would ruin you life so you will have a real good life and be with God in the end!

I haven't looked at any of the paperwork but I'm gonna start playing with some new friends for my first game. I want to be a wizard with spells for helping the team as well as atk. Where should I spend the ability score points if we don't roll for them? Intelligence? Wisdom?
They should make a 3D version of this, like a companion app or some shit. Idk maybe not.

I'm sorry but for an absolute normy like me I feel like this advice is way too generic. It feels like I should have stopped the video when you said to get the beginner set.
