That D20 gag legitimately happened to me in a game I was running with a new player. He was on the other side of the room each game, and or about 3 sessions he was always upset he was rolling so low, and we chalked it down to being unlucky, He never figured out why he couldn't roll above a 12. I eventually asked him about it and watched him roll initiative one time, and saw he picked up his D12. I pointed it out and he said "but this is the die I've been using for all my checks".

I imagine if the player blanks after being set free, the DM can start describing the surroundings to give the player time and context to decide. Here he was told he was in a market and left there without a goal, so it makes sense to have nothing, and if slowly the market starts having an actual mental image about what is it there it should be much easier to decide on something to do.

Yeah I'll say this I think one of the biggest obstacles is the way the PHB presents information and as a result there is a lot of flipping around. I honestly made my own descriptions of the instructions to kind of streamline it. Like I will tell people to pick a background first because you typically get more proficiencies from class. So instead of picking rogue and then finding your background has proficiencies you picked already and flipping back to choose 2 more rogue ones. You pick two THEN you're going to rogue and you don't have turn back to the duplicates. Odds are less likely you'll need to return to backgrounds and pick something there and, in the rare chance you do, you might even be able to remember the one or two other options.

Beginner tip, until you can tell which dice is which on sight, keep each die in their own container like a Ziploc and write D20, D10, etc. Always keep them in the right pouch, eventually you'll develop the sight reading skill of spotting a die just by looking.

I played with - didn't DM for, thank gods - a newbie who had a very...unusual approach to rules he didn't know/understand. Specifically, if he didn't know what to do in a given situation, instead of asking the DM or doing what he'd done before, he'd make up some BS each time. Often completely random stuff - he kept trying to roll to dodge, and would often declare what check he would make based on what sounded right to him. It'd be one thing if he learned and stopped doing it, but he didn't - for all the time I played with him, he never did learn how the basic pattern of attack-roll damage worked. And he'd get offended if he was told "that's not a thing" or "the game doesn't work like that": once he got very upset about called shots not being in the game. Things like that. It was kinda hilarious.

I was pretty decent at my first game. I'm still a baby player with only a few sessions under my belt but I think I'm doing well. I play a goblin rogue with a wholesome backstory. The biggest thing to teach me was 'which one is the d20' which I remembered after asking once and confirming a few more times (I picked then showed the dice to confirm it was the right one before rolling), I also needed help with figuring out what stats applied to what, what proficiency was, and what initiative was. On my 4th session though I got the barbarian to throw my rogue like a football so he could murder an enemy rogue who was trying to run away to tell his guild/get backup (barbarian rolled a nat 20, I have +7 acrobatics, +5 for dexterity as my dm allowed me to take -1 strength) I rolled a 26 after modifiers so my goblin totally landed that with both daggers in his back and killed the enemy rogue. My rogue also keeps mailing poop to a racist elven lord he met. If you're going to be a poop person you get poop in the mail. My DM, I think, is secretly proud of me and flabbergasted at the things I come up with, like mailing poo to a racist lord and convincing our artificer to make one of the packages spring loaded so when he opened it he basically gets pie-tinned in the face with goblin feces that've been fermenting in the time it takes to travel to him. I'm probably going to accidentally start a race war if this lord finally has enough but my goblin has proficiency with forgers tools so none of the writing matches so he has no idea who's actually sending all these packages to him, he just lives in fear of packages so far

My first time playing D&D , I rolled terribly like this. Turns out the DM thought I was having a lesbian affair with his gf (no ) who set up the game so he used loaded dice to try and make us fight. She was kind ofvhigh strung and screamed at me for being useless when her character ended up dying. I just thought it was a good prank but it backfired on him and they broke up. I am not friends with either of them anymore.
