  • SEASON 2 - EPISODE 4
FLORENCE BEACH - located 27 minutes from the Big Fiddle in Sydney. There are two beaches here, one at Little Pond and another at Big Pond. There are no lifeguards, but there is cell phone service. VISITED: SUNDAY JULY 21, 2024 at 9:30am. I loved this beach. Ample parking. No change rooms and restrooms.
Interesting story: TAT-1 submarine telephone cable. The cable was laid in 1955 and 1956. It went into service Sept 1956 and retired 1978.

📺 ABOUT THIS CHANNEL - In 2023 I decided it would be fun to try to visit all the beaches on Cape Breton Island. I read somewhere there are around 80. I don’t know how long this will take - I’m just gonna go one by one.

Very nice job on the video and history. The back beach is in my back yard. Many happy memories of summers spent snorkeling at the front beach.

Thanks for watching! Great pair of beaches. I went back to the front beach a couple of days ago and found a manhole cover on the beach, some sort of access or service hatch, it’s stamped MTT.

Sorry in advance for using this beach as my own personal MX race track since '95. Still do. The no anchor sign is gone.

Yes a hidden gem … my wife and I come home from Calgary and spend a few days here every summer.

Nice video of our local gems. Some other facts. Florence Colliery (coal mine) underlies most of this area. At the beach parking lot it is about 60m or 200ft below ground surface. Also you mentioned erosion. Little Pond Beach, the one to the west has migrated about 350m inland in the last 100 years whereas Big Pond Beach has not because of the railway and the measures that were used to protect it over the years.

Thank you Glen for watching and commenting with the additional bits of info! Always learning! 350m of erosion in the last 100 years, that's wild. ( I plan on doing an end of season video and throwing in little bits of info that subscribers/viewers have offered up)

Thank you for a beautiful video:) It's my 2nd video of yours and I can't thank you enough for the details and history. Yes I have a that little nerdy side of me that just gets excited by little tidbit of information about areas I visit. Often I will take a dirt road just for the sake of satisfying my curiosity and then try to even talk to locals to learn about an area. You are scratching that itch for me. Looking forward to where you will take us next. OH and btw while I know CB is full of many gems I am really liking that this one is close enough for a day trip yet a total escape at same time. Keep up the great work!
