    I bought one of those "shell" keys from Amazon. Performed (or failed to) exactly as yours did. My only working key just broke. Thank goodness for your video! I just held the broken one up until the security light went off and then stared it with the new key! Calling a locksmith in the morning, but thank goodness I'm not stranded! You're a lifesaver!

      He's coming tomorrow, but he was adamant that if I use the key without the transporter to do EXACTLY what you did and TAPE the old key close to the ignition or it can screw up the car! I think he's going to take the transponder out of the broken key and then give me additional key that has no remote buttons for around $100. Stay tuned.....

    I have a European Nissan Patrol 4X4 similar to a Landcruiser. I damaged one key and had the problem that I could not get another one coded to match the other one good key I had. I just removed the steering column cover and zip tied the good key to the barrel. No risk of damage to the glass encapsulated RFID (Chip) by trying to extract it from the key plastic and yes these often come in a glass vial, real easy to break. There is no no messing with the wiring. Took a little time to get it positioned right. Its been there now for nearly three years and my vehicle goes off roading. Purchased a couple of regular keys to have cut with aftermarket keyfob plips to operate the door locks and just signed them onto the system,

    There are several type of remote assembly (remote module inside the case). Some of them got a tiny space next to battery cover to fit the chip. If don't, you can just glue it inside the case. Either way, you can "extract" the old chip using dremel and be careful not to damage the chip. I remember doing those rav4s and corollas when I was working as locksmith

      HEy buddy! Yes, you're 100% right. Some people do extract the transponder ships in these keys, it's a very delicate job, I just choose to avoid it considering the car itself is a older style car at this point (2006) with lots of body damage. Since this video I've been using a 65 dollar Home Depot Programmed key.

    Nice video man! Nice of you to share your knowledge with the rest of us 👍. So I have a 2018 RAV4 and I lost my master key but I am currently driving around with my spare key. Would I be able to apply the methods in this video to make extra copies? Or do I need the master key? Thank you in advance 🙏

    • @hybrid32494
      @hybrid32494  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      hey man! thanks for watching. I just looked up the 2018 rav4 key, there is a smart key fob and a regular key for those models. IF you have the regular blade (metal key) you can take it directly to any Lowes or Home Depot and they will program a blank key for you. This will only work if your current key has the transponder in it already (as it should, to start the car). The basic principle is they just clone the transponder and cut a new key, now ofcourse you won't have the master key's keyless door buttons work, but the key will open the door and start the car if needed. Your only other alternative is to get it from the dealership and get them to cut and program it, probably will charge you close to 400-500 for this.

    Hi, maybe you can help me? I had a locksmith come out about two years ago because both of my key fobs stopped working. When I changed the battery it didn’t work. The locksmith tried everything but could not get my key fobs to work. He even tried to program new key fobs. He said that it wasn’t connecting to my car. Do I have a blown fuse? The dealer said it would cost $500 for one key fob. What would you recommend?

      hello sir, its very rare for a key fob to stop working after a battery swap. More than likely you put the battery in incorrectly, please check it. Also check the battery with a voltmeter to be sure it's normal.

    • @hybrid32494
      @hybrid32494  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      there is a way to program a transponder chip if you already have two keys.(I have not done this myself) Otherwise you would need an Home Depot or Lowes to use their machine to code the transponder chip in a new key.

      If ya have two working keys you can program the key yourself that will cost ya nothing. Just put in the first key in the ignition turn it to the right do not turn the engine on then take key out, then within 5 seconds put in the second key turn to the right do not start engine take key out, then within 10 seconds put in the key to be programmed turn to the right do not start engine leave it in for a few seconds take the key out, then put key back in the engine should start with the key that ya programed. Home Depot and Lowes will not cut keys with chips in it ya have to go to a locksmith

This is an anti-theft system and all cars have this. Basically if the key and car's system isn't programmed correctly or looses connection the car will not stay running.

  • @MorrisDugan
    @MorrisDugan 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    It's not that hard to get the chip out of an old key. I do it by prying on different areas with a small screwdriver until something starts to come loose. I usually break some plastic on the key, but the key is dead, anyway. The chip will stay put in the new key without glue.
    The least expensive durable option if you have a chip is to get something like the Ilco TOY43-GTS blank key that has a slot to insert your chip. (You'll need to match the key model to your model of car.) I don't consider the keys with built-in remotes to be durable, nor a lot of the cheap keys on eBay or Amazon. Open one up and you'll see.
    If you're a super-cheapskate, I suppose you could epoxy your chip to an all-metal key.

    Take pliers and break the old o me off. Or throw it in warm water and use a razor blade. The home depot key was unnecessary. You could have got the Amazon key for the 15 and cut for 5. Then transfer transponder. Using two keys is more expensive and less efficient. Good luck.

    • @hybrid32494
      @hybrid32494  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      thanks for the advice. Although I still think the Home Depot key is very useful because it is like a second key, I still have the old transponder in the original Toyota key. Technically I can now program a third one. The Home Depot key has now become the main key, and no issues at all.
      In terms of a second key this was the cheapest route. In terms of just one key, your method would have worked too.
