    I wish you documented what the chip actually looks like outside the shell and how to take it out, but thanks for confirming my theory. I figured it had to be this little rectangle thing in the shell, since there's no where else for the transponder to fit. You also kept calling the keyless entry part the transponder, the rectangle is the transponder, and there's a transceiver inside the steering column that reads it. Together the system is called an immobilizer, since it prevents the car from turning over unless the transponder is present.

    Thank you for the info on the chip!! Yours is the first video I've seen that explains that oh so important part! I had to have the Ace Hardware store guy pry mine out and luckily it worked but it could have been a disaster! I thought it was easy as replace the plastic case. No one mentions having to pry the chip out with a razor blade. Key fobs are a racket!

    I like that you are trying to help others with information, but also explain that you had to pay to get the key cut so people know. The chip is called the transponder and the piece with buttons is called keyless entry remote.

    For anyone watching and wondering if you can swap the key over, it IS possible. You need to VERY CAREFULLY use a dremel and cut away a bit of the top of the plastic holding the key in, and eventually you can wiggle it free. If you didnt cut too much off, the new blade should pop in securely.
    Evem if you happen to cut a little too much off, it should be pretty snug when you pop the other half on. Ive tried and it works well. Just try not to cut all the way to where the transponder chip goes in.

      I second this. I just did the same thing. I used a flathead screw driver and hammer. I broke the plastic off to release the metal key blade.
      FIRST, REMOVE THE MICROCHIP before completing the step above.

    Thanks for the video! Would the old key cover with the Toyota logo fit the new key? Also does the new eBay key have the same kind of hard plastic feel as the original, or does it feel like it’s going to crack again? Debating whether to buy the cheap key or a genuine one. I only want to replace it once for the next 10 more years.

    • @ShareXP
      @ShareXP  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Go for a cheap one that has a year warranty, so if you break it you get that replacement! I've learned to be careful when starting the car, to make sure I'm twisting closer to the metal part of the key.

    Omg.. mine broke exactly the same. There seems to be a pattern here. Just wondering why can't they make the metal key with a better frame or metal frame for that matters. That way the plastic cover casing won't be under stress over time plus disintegrating plastic over time causing what we all experience.

    • @ShareXP
      @ShareXP  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      sebastinoful You take the blank key to a locksmith and have it cut and matched up to the original. Don't try to swap the metal part, it's held in by cheap plastic and that's what breaks in the first place.

    • @sebastinoful
      @sebastinoful 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Paul Carlson the cheapest I found was 89.99 in a kiosk, a big rip off just to cut a key (they won't let me provide the one I bought) I was connected to a locksmith in my area that will do it for 10. I'm looking now of you can get them imported from China already cut.

    • @chriscurry2512
      @chriscurry2512 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@sebastinoful They key from China isn't already cut. You buy a blank for your specific car type. Then you get the blank cut by the locksmith. You then move over the chip and transponder to the new key housing that you had cut by the locksmith. I hope you find this helps.
