      Lots of money will have to be spent. 3 CGI dragons was hard enough, now imagine hundreds of dragons. The giant topless towers might also have to be CGI as well. Magic, spells and stuff would also have to be CGI.

    So if it is true, that all 14 volcanoes erupted at the same time, it is highly likely, that there were in fact a supervolcano, like Yellowstone and the phlegraean fields, with every crater just beeing one weak point over a huge magma chamber. Beeing that close together would fit that picture. Not only would the timeframe fit, as supervolcanoes do tend to sleep for a long time between eruptions, like 100,00 years,, but the amount of destruction would also be fitting. If we take a look at the 1883 eruption of Krakatoa, we can see a similar picture here: The Indonesian vulcanic island of Krakatoa exploded in a massive VEI6 and literally destroyed itself to the point, that only a small part of the island remained. The main body of the vulcano was ripped apart. The eruptions shockwave was felt 180km away, where it still shook houses and furniture and the sound of the explosion is said to have travelled the globe three times. It also generated a 100m high tsunami, that killed people around the sunda strait. A supervolcanic eruption can reach a VEI 8 or even higher (an VEI 7 eruption is ten times as strong as an VEI6). And like we see in Italy around Mt. Vesuvius, areas around vulcanoes are so fertile that the are beeing re-settled despite the danger. If the Romans were unaware that their Mt. Vesuvius was a volcano, the sheep herders of Valyria could've been, too. It could be a plausible theory to what the Doom of Valyria was.

    • @anthonyappleyard5688
      @anthonyappleyard5688 3 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      I suspect that, like Krakatoa, Valyria was once a single round volcanic cone, which in a prehistoric eruption blew itself out and caved in, like Tambora did, leaving a collapsed mess, which restarted erupting from many points.

    I say there are multiple places dragons come from apparently most north of the wall there are giant ice dragons 3 times the size of the normal dragons and under valyria across the sea there are dragons that don't breathe fire.

    • @DiplodocusesAreHawt
      @DiplodocusesAreHawt 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      the dragons that dont breathe fire are called wyverns, there are loads of them that run rampant on the continent of Sothoryos and are one of the reasons why its so uninhabitable.
      theres also rumours that the Valyrians created dragons by experimenting on firewyrms and wyverns with blood magic (as a dragon is kind of a combination of the two species) but thats not confirmed

    hard to believe that with all these other colonies, no other dragonriders outside of the targaryens survived. not to mention, if dragons are fire made flesh, how would volcanic eruptions kill them?

    • @InitialPC
      @InitialPC 2 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      there were other individual dragon riders, they were in the free cities when the doom happened, but after valyria was destroyed the free cities fell to infighting to succeed it, the remaining dragon lords were killed in the process
      there was one dragonlord who may have led a house, he gathered an army and his dragons and went to reclaim valyria but they were never heard from again

      A handful survived, but none of the dragonlords did. The most powerful Valyrians in other cities were usually quickly assassinated, or killed by angry mobs. The video mentions the one surviving dragonlord who was in Lys when the doom happened. He declared himself emperor and then took a massive army to Valyria to try to find out what happened and just... never came back.

    3 more notes
    1. Land of long summer fate is known. It has been flooded when the doom appeared, turning once rich and fertile land into a swamp haunted by demons
    2. Elyria is prominent for it's slaver city reputation
    3. Valyria has had alot of colonies in the south that were not mentioned. If i recall correctly they were Goggosos, Isle of Tears that completely died out of red plague and Gorosh, former Ghiscary colony that was used as a prison/slaver camp until it disappeared

      Ack. Well, at least you mention their Sothoryos colonies in this. Big fan of your map videos. Your next should probably be on Sothoryos. The idea is that Zamettar was their version of Roman Carthage, and the headquarters of the "Free Holder" faction (the wealthy merchant princes who aren't one of the two dragonlord factions). If you look at a map...we already knew that winds and currents in the Summer Sea go clockwise, which is why shipping lanes to Yi Ti have to go east through the north side of Great Moraq around Qarth. Well....how do they get back? Keeping in mind they've also said that most ships hug the coasts instead of going across open water (except the Summer Islanders and Ironborn). Well....ships heading west back TO Valyria would go along the coast of Sothoryos, and reach Zamettar. And we KNEW that Zamettar was once a flourishing city, right? Why would there be ruins if it wasn't once a functioning city?
      The idea is that the north coasts of Sothoryos used to be a more habitable/settled - before the tsunamis from the Doom wiped out Zamettar. Used to be a trade hub for all the ships coming back from Yi Ti - I'm guessing, but look at a map.
      So one of the big tensions in it will be like the fall of the Roman Republic: the capital versus the provinces. And which was the wealthiest province/most interesting? They settled on Zamettar (not ALL of Sothoryos, mind you, that's an entire continent, but the coastal strip used as a trade port. I mean, similarly, Qarth is just a city on the coast, but its entire hinterland is the useless Red Waste.
      Probably a short update on "Well, we know that Sothoryos had SOME cities in it, planted by the Ghiscari, captured by the Valyrians in the third Ghiscari War" etc etc.
      This video on its own is great, though - you do mention the Sothoryos stuff.

      Nah, Valyria is inspired by Melnibone, from Michael Moorcock's Elric stories ( the Melniboneans are Dragon Lords & slave owners, practise magic and rule over an island empire) with a hefty dose of Atlantis and Numenor from Tolkien's Silmarillion mixed in for good measure.

    • @Madame702
      @Madame702 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      No @hanhai8515. The shadow people of Asshai created through blood magic half human and half animal creatures. These are the Valyrians themselves. No humans have violet eyes and silvery gold hair like the Valyrians of old. They are part dragon part human and they can bond with fire breathing dragons. That why most Valyrians stayed in within Valyria and 14 volcanoes that gave them their power and energy. If you are part dragon you want to be around magical areas.

    • @hanhai8515
      @hanhai8515 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Madame702 That makes sense, I understand the stories in the setting/other fantasy novel are more related. I'm trying to say the geography and events of Valyria also mirror a lot of the events and geography in classical antiquity. It literally looks like the shape of Italy/mainland Europe/Britain. With similar events like Roman conquering Britain. Free citiies such as Braavos literally have a giant bronze statue. just like Colossus of Rhodes in the real world.

    This video is wonderfully informative, but misses a few spots. One is when the narrator calls the Doom a natural cataclysm, though there are many hints that it was perpetrated and premeditated as a calamity caused by the Braavosi. A very interesting, slightly conspiracy theory-ish series of videos exist to back up this, as well as many other claims, with albeit only circumstantial evidence, but a lot of circumstantial evidence.
    2nd, Euron Greyjoy did go to Valyria. He has a full suit of armor made of Valyrian steel. However, this is told from the POV of Aeron Greyjoy while coming down from shade of the evening, so it may be a hallucination. Also, perhaps Euron's many reavings acquired him enough Valyrian steel to forge a suit of armor by a Qohorik armorer, but then there is Dragonbinder. Finding that messed up horn and a suit of Valyrian steel armor makes more sense if he went to Valyria, but he otter have a whole mess of swords, weapons, and armor that did not fit if he went to Valyria. Euron, really, is far more mysterious than he is evil. Yeah he is evil, but his power, motives, objectives, and purpose are all not what they seem. The only clear thing about him are his methods. They're fucked up and full of evil shit that would make Snidely Whiplash cringe, but it has been prophesied that a hero would rise from the sea. Wouldn't it be some amazing, mind-blowing shit to find out that this evil, brother raping (as he claims), serial out of the mouth tongue ripperering, druggie pirate with a god complex turned out to be a good guy?

      My best theory to try to explain it would be that "Britain", "Rome", "Carthage" and "China" all are (1) far more well-known to history buffs than Russia is, and (2) possess traits and qualities that seem to be more "universal", to the point where those traits could be included in and enrich even the lore of a completely different fantasy world, whereas Russia's unique traits are kind of only specific to Russia (ex. it adopted the Cyrillic alphabet -- cannot really translate over into the A.S.o.I.a.F. world; it is stereotyped as having a lot of potatoes and vodka -- again, not really interesting or universal enough to help build a different world; it had a history of tenuous relations with nomadic peoples -- not really unique in either our world and Essos).

      There’s elements of Roman inspiration but not solely. Look at Braavosi is clearly heavily inspired by medieval Venice; a city-state in what is now Italy... but using Italy in a medieval context is pretty much always inaccurate.
