Why Indians Develop Cataracts Earlier? | Understanding Cataract Surgery in India | Centre For Sight

In this video, Prof. Dr. Mahipal S. Sachdev addresses the question of many people that why Indians develop cataracts earlier than people of western countries. He explains that it depends on different factors. One important thing to understand is that, for reasons not fully known, Indians tend to develop cataracts about 10 years earlier than their Western counterparts. This could be due to genetic factors, high levels of sunshine, malnutrition during childhood, etc.
The magnitude of the issue is significant. India performs around 7.5 million cataract surgeries annually, which is equivalent to the combined numbers of China, US, and Europe. Despite this, India has only about 30,000 ophthalmologists, with approximately 18,000 to 20,000 being operating surgeons. This creates a substantial workload for each surgeon performing these essential procedures.
