- Completing our triforce of Zelda videos, it's time to sit down and finally discuss Tears Of The Kingdom. The review scores are insanely high and there's an unbelievable amount of hype for this one. Most games would crumble under such pressure, but Tears Of The Kingdom has done the impossible. It not only meets the expectations, but surpasses them. For a middling Zelda enjoyer such as myself to love this game so much says all that's needed, but the systems in this game truly blow my mind.

I have to say TOTK is absolutely fantastic. I know a game is good when I suddenly realize I've played 10 hours straight. That literally never happens to me anymore but well, TOTK is special.
It's incredible how Nintendo consistently blows the competition out of the water even though their hardware is weak to say the least. Legendary stuff.
Nintendo is the only company that still cares about good gameplay and not only focuses on graphics. That's why.

Yeah it really an amazing game. I loved BOTW but this so far has blown me away in almost every aspect. Graphics look great to me albeit do I wish the performance was better, however it has not detracted from the experience for me. My game of the year so far, the only game that may take that crown is FF16.
Same vibes!!! I can’t remember the last time 10 hours pass and I’m like WHAT HAPPENED TO TIME. This game is just truly insane. Feels like such an adventure

The game is incredible. 20 hours in has barely touched the surface. The amount stuff you still have to discover. Mind-boggling.

Ever since the Dreamcast days ive always wanted a game or imagined a game with real time fog that can be displaced and moved around in real time and its finally happened : D

in the first 10 hours I was kind of like “we’ll this breath of the wild 2 alright”, but after 40 hours, and all the memories collected. This is def the better more fleshed out Zelda experience, period

Nintendo needs to setup build sharing within the game. That'd be awesome

Coop next game play as link and Zelda to kill demise or something. Allow building in the world like a survival game that doesn't despawn

Imagine how great the speed runs are gonna be and how creative the speed runners will have to get.
Already...only 94 minutes but a lot harder than last game. Nintendo patched most glitches/tricks.
I’m now really looking forward to Nintendo’s next console, because I feel in my bones that there’s going to be some kind of “Definitive Edition” at launch that resolves all the technical limitation problems.
I’ve also got a feeling that with all the time, money, and manpower they’ve dedicated to building this iteration of Hyrule, that TotK is going to be Nintendo’s Skyrim or GTAV for a while.
TOTK in 60fps 1080p would be amazing

That advice at the end is huge! That’s the exact perspective I use for trying out new ps plus or game-pass games.
I couldn’t stop playing because I wanted to get the armor sets. I really love how creative you can be, the bosses that you fight, and even the story. I haven’t seen the whole thing because I’m trying to get all the memories and then see them in order. This game’s a lot of fun.
Controls felt wierd to me as well, glad you brought it up, i had that issue with breath of the wild too, but not to the same degree. I actually get confused on rotating objects more often than id like.
You know you can change the control scheme where you use the B button to jump and the X button to sprint right? You can do it in BotW too.

Kinda wish it had layout like most open world games. Feel like a is on the right due to handheld feels better for most used button. But pro controller would prefer Xbox ps position for that
The Zelda team are genius to make a game that adds so much to its sequel and make it feel fresh!! Undoubtedly will be Game of the Year

It should be default though.
Not seeing any severe frame dips at all. Neither did Digital Foundry. You may have a pre-patch copy.
I also remapped it with the Controls Settings

Is it me or has the video game drought come to an end? We're being spoiled with all these great games lately.
It really is a masterpiece of a game. I haven’t had any noticeable issues with frame rate whatsoever except for about 20 seconds when I was on my way to Zora’s Domain out of 30 hours of gameplay and that’s it. I keep seeing people bring up the frame rate but I personally have not noticed anything. It’s a great once in a generation type of game and I cannot recommend it more. It’s brilliant.
It’s just fun. Pure fun. Combat is more engaging with more challenging enemies and their strategies and I like the depths and sky islands
Hey man! I just stumbled upon your video and I have to say, I have had a VERY similar exp with both BOTW and TOTK. I liked Breath of the Wild but I absolutely think im gonna put in way more than 60 hours in tears of the kingdom as it is so much fun to play
The creativity with this game is off the charts!!! Regarding that pinball shrine one you’re talking about. I thought I wonder if a bomb arrow will work and TA-DA it did! Lol. So many endless possibilities with this game. Makes breath of the wild almost look like a beta.
15:10 Matty, there is a menu option that literally inverts these two commands. It was there in BOTW and it still is in TOTK
In game > pause button > system (all way to the right, where you save the game) > options > swap jump controls
It reminds me of Prey. Chiefly, the moment I realized how much the abilities empowered me feels a lot like realizing how much the glue gun opened up exploration and changed the way I looked at every area in Prey.
That was the coolest intro ever. I’m blown away by the old school television 😅
Speaking on the creativity I saw a guy who was having trouble getting the flying things to launch so he put it on a cart and put fans on it and made it a flying car type thing

the weapon breaking mechanic constantly breaks me, I've tried a solid 8-9 times to get into the game since launch but oh my god, I can't stand having to constantly farm for weapons lol
@@Stefantius Have you tried emulating it and disabling weapon durability?
@@Stefantius but at some point you end up with more weapons than you know what to do with. Keep expanding your inventory slots with Korok seeds.

Also because I put so many hours in BOTW the only control issues I had was the ability swap being mapped to L instead of (^) so I kept going into items when trying to change what ability I was using. I always look at Zelda games quite critically because I’m a huge fan, but this game blew my mind and I can’t get enough of it. For a switch game and; some games in general it’s a technological marvel. However the performance could use some love.
It’s times like this I wish Nintendo would just make a legit PC emulator linked to Nintendo accounts. I get that Nintendo is huge in Japan and not many people have computers but it’s the cheaper option for them instead of making a new switch - plus they could still technically make sales *if* they made an emulator. That way hardcore Nintendo fans could experience 60 fps with no frame drops. They could continue to make handheld devices in the future but still get permanent revenue from people just buying their games for a “switch launcher”.
Wouldn't call it a hidden gem but it is a gem no doubt

Zelda games quite literally move the industry forward. There is a reason even other devs shut up and take notes when a new mainline title drops in the franchise and then you see so many games take the dna of the latest Zelda and run with it. For example one of the heads of rockstar once stated that if any dev of any modern 3d game tells you they weren’t inspired by ocarina of time they are lying to you. The titles that the Zelda team puts out are THAT important .

I could see them at one point adding in a story line to the newer zelda games and give Link a voice. have some wild backstory as to why he never spoke or couldn't speak, and have the first few lines of his be the most rememberable.

They want Link to be ambiguous. I think they gave him longer hair and earrings because the franchise has an equal male to female ratio. It's a smart move on Nintendo's part.
Just have him talk. He's not canonically mute in-universe. He obviously converses with NPCs, they just don't show us what is said.

His design in BoTW and ToTK are that of a character who's been asleep for years and years plus in the cutscenes during BoTW he has long hair. It's a design choice. It's changed everytime a new Zelda game is out. Speaking of Zelda games.. still waiting for the fabled Shieka Zelda game that was rumored all those years ago lol. Still wish they'd have don't something with that. It would of been awesome.

Honestly though how do you possibly miss a game dropping to pretty much only 10/10s? That sort of thing doesn’t happen much in the age of modern gaming.
Bro, they removed EVERYTHING from the quarry in Akkala, that was my fav looting spot. Also, where are the Durians? They nerf’d the HOLY F out of hearty ingredients. I love it, they upped the challenge and it feels great

Here’s my take: It’s a great game but it doesn’t have the mind altering impact like BotW.
Is it more than DLC for $70? Yeah but it also doesn’t feel like BotW 2… more like 1.5. Which is fine since BotW was such an awesome game to begin with.
I’m back! That’s interesting that you never had that click with Zelda because, man wind wake is definitely one of my favourite games and I wish they brought it to switch. With botw, it really made me miss the classic Zelda’s with temples. But this new game is fantastic! Still haven’t done a temple.. it’s a huge game!

For someone who never finished BOTW, is this worth getting? I only played BOTW for 20 hours and then stopped. Shrines and combat really sucked in my opinion, but exploring was fun. Does this game fix those issues?
If you didn't like BOTW you won't like this, none of it has been fixed
Shrines are harder and more creative, but combat is similar. The new mechanics do add to the combat though if you use them.

If you didn't like BOTW I don't think you'll like this. The shrines aren't exactly hard but you need to get a bit creative. As for combat, you can do things like fuse a sword with a rock and it lasts a bit longer but it's still gonna break and the combat is similar to BOTW but it lets you be more creative such as using an arrow and putting a topaz on it which for some reason gives it lightning powers but lol. You can also use abilities to pick up an explosive from a bit away and then drop it on enemies, etc.
Personally I didn't see them as issues in BOTW, I just got used to them but that's just me lol.

I'm absolutely in love with the game. I'm so impressed. It has already been kicking elden ring from my throne. Btw you can swap the jump button to B btw ;) i also have backpadels on my joycons and use them for sprinting. So excited! I got a feeling this will be my favorite game of all time. As someone who built a log ladder for the icy section on Sky Island... Lord, man, attach them end on end. You have a whole forest there. Still, ya made it. XD

Great video. I agree with most of all you said I think. Especially the part about the problem solving aspect of BotW and now TotK. I dislike puzzle solving games. I don't want or need to do math problems in games! TotK let's me solve problems my way. I dig that so much

I had the same problem with the control set up too ever since Breath of the Wild. I changed it to Super Mario World's style and all is right with the world again.
Here the tip for the controls. You can swap the jump mapping from x to b. In the settings.
U can switch dash and jump button in option menu
i got the master sword and completed the entire map before doing any story quests lol, they gave me the paraglider and i was like goodbye im off

Love TOTK 😭 I've only played 20 hours but it's amazing. Absolute masterpiece and I hope it helps revolutionize gaming again like BOTW did.
Miyazaki said one of his biggest inspirations to elden ring was BOTW so my theory is it will have an impact on the industry for those who actually care about the medium

There's a setting to swap the B and X buttons. I did it as soon as I turned it on, same with Breath of the Wild!

There’s an option in the settings to swap jump and spring so they make sense. I shudder for anyone who didn’t find that early on.
This game is almost overwhelming to jump into with the amount of exploring and things you can do. But It's so much fun 🤘

It might be time for nintendo to marry its creativity WITH a powerful system. God help us all when they figure out that a system that can handle PS5 games AND Nintendo games will crush competition....plus let them achieve all the creativity they want.

Nintendo doesn’t care about graphics for a reason.
I literally never think about the graphics when playing a zelda game. They nail the art style and atmosphere in such a way that I get way more sucked in than I do with more "technical" games.

It's fascinating how when devs have to push the limits of hardware, we as consumers see the most innovation and most creativity a studio has to offer, as much as i agree with matty that the hardware is definitely showing its age, it makes me wonder if this game would exist in the capacity it does now, if it was on stronger hardware
Apparently it runs in 8K60fps on emulator (granted you have a strong enough PC)

Yea I did that after the intro cutscene, solid decision for sure. Jumping with B feels much more natural

I have the same issue with the controls. Coming from Xbox (long time Zelda fan) the controls and buttons just don’t feel intuitive. Love the game I just cannot get used to the button mapping…
You can switch jump button placement in the options.

I actually consider BOTW a like 6.5 or 7/10. Called it far cry hyrule or assassins creed hyrule but TOTK is such a massive step up to the point I have barely put it down

Honestly, the QA for this must’ve been INSANE. Even the dev team have said it’s insanely hard to design dungeons, with all the tools the player has available to them. I’m not sure another Zelda game can carry these mechanics into further games b/c of how open-ended the puzzles will have to be.
I had the same issue with the controls, you can fix it back to how it was in BoTW
