So I tried playing KINGDOM HEARTS 3 In 2023...

  • As time has gone on, Kingdom Hearts 3 has looked worse and worse for many in the rear view mirror thanks to the myriad of spinoffs that came before it leading to an overly complicated tale. When combined with (before Re Mind), a stunning depletion of Disney bosses and Final Fantasy characters and you're left with a bit of an identity crisis. Still, I remember my time with Kingdom Hearts 3 well and even in my return to it, I found myself enjoying quite a bit about it.

    Part of the issue for me with tangled and frozen is square wasn't allowed to alter the story. So we got basically carbon movie copies, and also i might be in the minority on this idk but i hate the attractions. Its so disruptive

      Tangled was allowed to take some very minor liberties, but yeah. Frozen *definitely* suffered the most from this. Which is a shame, because there could have been a lot of fun stuff there.

      It’s “you keep using that word, I do not think it means what you think it means” territory. All the entries feed into and develop the Dark Seeker Saga, introducing plot elements, characters and relationships that pay off later in the game and subsequent games even when it’s not the next release chronologically that has pay off (the Lingering Will post-game super boss in 2FM whose origin is shown in Birth by Sleep for example, or re:coded’s datascape being very important for Union X). Even the rhythm game sets up plot points and direction for future games, albeit entirely as post-final boss cutscenes.

    • @jedirayden
      @jedirayden ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Actually, according to the Merriam Webster dictionary, spin-off (when used as a noun, like in this case) is the EXACT word he should be using. "Something that is imitative or derivative of an earlier work, product or establishment"
      The non-numbered titles are not sequels, as they take place in various points in the overall timeline, they do have significant relevance to the overarching main plotline of the Dark Seekers story, so they are NOT side-games, and they are certainly derivative, because their more contained narratives are all derived from/related to the characters and events in the numbered "mainline" titles.
      Just saying.

    • @hiizen
      @hiizen ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@jedirayden what about dream drop distance, it literally begins on the ending of kh2 and it finishes with the begining of Kh3, chain of memories doing the same between kh1 and kh2, or melody of memories now begining right after the ending of Kh3, they are literal sequels, I can give it to you with BBS, union cross and 358/2 days for example, as they do take place in different points in the timeline (358/2 days is a little weirder though as it happens in tandem with kh1, chain of memories and ends in the begining of the kh2 prologue), specially BBS and union cross, but BBS would be more of a prequel than a spin-off in the strict sense I think. But other than union cross and the rest of the mobile games I don't think any other really has a more contained narrative, as they expand on and explain the events that already happened on that point in the series or that were about to happen right after their release, without them you wouldn't be a little lost about tiny details, you wouldn't understand anything that was happening after in the story.
      As far as I can think of and have seen, the only things that define a numbered title as such is the fact that sora is the main focus and only playable protagonist, a form of xehanort is the main villain and the most defining one, the kingdom hearts is summoned. I know in BBS xehanort kinda does it too (although it just appeared because he forged the defective χ-blade), but being a prequel it kinda makes sense, it works as a sort of Kingdom Hearts 0 in the timeline of the whole plot.

      @@thewiseyounglad2699 In 2FM Critical Mode is easier to play than Proud Mode, though. It's just more punishing.
      Overall I think KH3 is the better game between the two, even without the DLC combo modifiers and keyblades. Its combat system has a comparable amount of depth and it's a far better RPG. 2FM had an alright combat system, but the enemy design was consistently bad and the RPG elements were completely unfinished and poorly implemented (I sure love getting no rewards out of the Hades Paradox Cup, or the synthesis system being completely worthless outside of debatably four specific endgame items), so much so that on Critical Mode the developers basically said "Fuck it" and removed the RPG elements from the core experience, making the gameplay completely action oriented, which is bad design for an Action RPG.
      I would never put any Kingdom Hearts game on the same level of quality as genuine masterpieces of the Action RPG genre like Dark Souls and especially vanilla Dark Souls 2, but if I had to choose one Kingdom Hearts game out of all of them, I would choose Kingdom Hearts 3. It has its own fair share of issues, but it strikes the balance between action and RPG far better than all of the other games in the series.

    Something I’ve learned to consider when comes to game development is the internal changing of hands from one dev to another. Cuz the team behind KH3 were the team that developed BBS and DDD (the Osaka Team btw), while KH2’s team were scattered about working on other games. Doesn’t give the base of 3 a pass for not feeling as tight, just provides context for those who weren’t watching the game’s development closely. I’m personally hopeful for KH4, because Re:Mind with its new combo modifiers and bosses, showed how the Osaka Team is improving and responding to feedback. Not an ideal situation overall, but I’ll take willingness to improve over stubbornly staying the course any day.
    Also it’s unfortunate that you’re not interested in 3’s Critical mode, as it adds an ability that turns off Attraction Flow (among others). If you do decide to give it a try, the challenge declines as you level, so most of the difficulty will spike early on but diminish the further you progress.

My only gripe with it is that it spends more time on set up than wrapping up the current saga but i am satisfied with the product we got, even before Remind. I will admit that the series itself is awful at catching newcomers on. If you’re new, look up the release order, and experience it that way, even if its in video form. • @KingArthur7777xbox

    I played the series by release. The not numbered titles are not spinoffs, they are direct continuations to the overarching story. Yes they aren’t direct continuations to the timeline, but they are directly connecting the information given from one to the next. If you follow that (which is how they were created I’m guessing), then the narrative is relatively easy to follow. Go into it without other’s forcing their expectations on you and you’ll have a blast with the story. If you pay attention to the story, it’s overall a very simple story. Sure it can’t be summed up in a couple sentences but it is by no means that convoluted as so many people claim. The only “spinoff” KH title (which still isn’t a spinoff as it is relevant in 3 in a major way) is the one on mobile that is actually a set-up for KH4. Dark Seeker saga titles have no spinoff titles. Glad you enjoyed the games Matty! I know KH3 didn’t live up to the hype but it couldn’t possibly after over a decade worth of waiting. Hope you keep enjoying KH as it goes off into it’s next saga!

      Lowkey the only things that I think are genuinely convoluted in the series so far are the way it handles time travel and the way KH3 ReMind in particular handles the Power of Waking (the ReMind Episode made my head spin and certain parts of it honestly added more questions than it answered, and of course it also retconned some of the main story events, like the battle with Saix, so that didn't help). I haven't had issues following along with anything else. The people who think the story of the Dark Seeker Saga is "too complicated" have low media literacy. These games are made for kids.

    As a long time KH fan (got into it with KH2 and have gone through all of the collections since) and KH3 is probably my third favorite game (1st being KH2 and 2nd being BBS). I really loved the combat, it felt like a culmination of so many systems from previous games and gave you so many fun options to just cool shit happen like Keyblade transformations, strengthened spells, team up attacks, and the Attractions.
    And most of the worlds are bangers. While it's disappointing that quite a few worlds are just the movie, a lot of worlds gave unique narratives like Toy Box, Monsters Inc, and San Fransokyo. But my favorite part of these worlds are just how large and lived in they all are, it's no longer just a series of boxed off rooms connected together, now you have Black Flag as a single world. It was just so much fun to go through these worlds (except Frozen's world, that was a miserable experience the whole way through).
    But, as fun as KH3 IS, it's far from perfect when it comes to pacing and especially narrative. I really wish they could incorporated more of the main storyline throughout the Disney worlds (like KH2 did with the attack on Hollow Bastion). Instead we get Sora and co. messing around in a Disney World, a cut scene happens teasing the plot, Sora needs to gain the power of waking, and off to a new Disney World. Rinse repeat for 8 WORLDS. Then the plot finally happens for two more worlds and credits.
    In this way, base KH3 is very unsatisfying when it comes to it's end game and finale. All these storylines and characters that have been built up for over a decade and it kind of ends with a confusing wet fart. Though I don't know how much of that comes down to my lack of knowledge when it comes to the mobile games side of the narrative. But that said, the Re:MIND DLC fixes most of my issues from the base game climax (with my biggest criticism being that you are basically playing the climax 3-4 times thanks to all of the time shenanigans) and I hope that whenever the KH3 remaster comes out that the Re:MIND ending will be incorporated into the base finale. That said, I can't really comment on the other parts of the DLC as the Organization XIII boss fights kicked my poor Lv 50 ass so I didn't get to experience it outside of watching the cutscenes on TH-cam.
    In summation, KH3 is a flawed but super fun game to play and explore, with a lot of spectacle to keep you glued to the screen. Kingdom Hearts 3 is a game that should be every self respecting KH fan. But that's just my long winded take.

But all in all, Ithink this one has had the best Disney worlds and overall plot pacing (This might be the biggest hot take here). In general I think disney worlds in every game feel like filler between the plot, and in general this one also does, but they made most of them at the very least interesting to play (except Frozen, got I hate that world). I just think overall the game is disappointing. Before they added different combat animations Sora had really boring combat/combos. Post launch support wasn’t that good either and they didn’t add any extra cool key blades besides two that should’ve already been in the game to begin with. The final world isn’t explorable like the others going through waves of hard enemies to get to the final boss. The worlds do not have enough difference from their movie counterparts making them extremely boring. No original worlds besides traverse town and the very last one and it’s not even explorable!!! They bring back the colosseum but no tournaments? It really sucks man I was so excited and it has so much missed potential. They also dumbed down the combat too taking out reaction commands, and the game is extremely easy too. It was also a missed opportunity where in 0.2 with Aqua you could actually customize her some and her clothing. Why was that not in kingdom hearts 3? It would’ve been awesome to be able to change the main casts look. They could’ve leaned more into the rpg elements too and added more like certain equipment pieces giving you different moves for combat and stuff like that.

    As excited as I was for Kingdom Hearts 3, there was also part of me that kind of felt like it was a bit of an obligation more than anything. Loved the first two games and really didn't dive into any of the spin offs outside of Chain of Memories on the GBA. I do think it's a very strong entry in the series. A lot of the worlds still feel claustrophobic with running through corridors but the worlds where it does open up like Toy Story or Big Hero 6 are amazing. I mean Pirates of the Caribbean is basically AC: Black Flag lite and I love it for that.
    That said, not sure I would continue on with the series. Not sure I care where the story goes from here and there's a limit in the type of worlds I would want to see going forward. Even Star Wars doesn't really get me excited cause I would prefer seeing Sora and co team up with something like the Rebels crew. Kind of like how Big Hero 6 is Marvel adjacent but not the MCU. Also story and combos were great and I like it when i don't have to grind too much. Unlike in 2 where the final boss fight just neverr ends. Where're your remind and melody of memory revies?

    Story was too childish and felt way too "Disney" instead of "FF with Disney characters" which is what most of us loved about 1/2. Gameplay was super fun and the story was still good(its KH), but they toned down the seriousness and grim feel that the others had sometimes.
    They def realized their mistake and KH4 looks to be the opposite of 3 in terms of story. All they have to do is basically make KH2 with 3s combat and its a 10/10.

    KH3 was such a treat after the long wait, not even since 2. The title had been teased as early as 2012 with DDD, and for a while we only had the remasters to hold us over, even if they were appreciated.
    Like you said, it's fairly easy, but I very much appreciate that like you said, it's more a problem with the game giving you access to so many tools, even if some of them aren't as balanced. I personally would prefer a game offer me options and be easy to exploit than a game be tough but have little to offer in terms of strategy. The Final Fantasy aspect is definitely a contentious one for a lot, but I think I didn't mind it, in hindsight a lot of the plot important stuff can be easily pushed towards the original cast (which to people unfamiliar with their games, the ff might as well be original to be fair. Was this issue a problem when we got TWEWY cameos in DDD instead of the usual FF when that came out?). The FF really is at it's best to me when they really integrate it into the Disney, which is to me why the Olympus stuff tends to be the best example of it, with Cloud, Auron, and Zack all explicitly interacting with the characters around besides Sora, Donald and Goofy. And for all the FF characters' worth, KH3 was the first and only game to have a cactuar appear outside of a gummi ship easter egg and the signature victory jingle.
    The gummi ship itself also has a really cool bonus boss, and I appreciate that, like Julius in DDD, it's an out-there pull, being the Schwartzgeist from Einhander, a PS1 era shooter Square made. Apparently some of the staff actually worked on that game so they snuck it in 3, and I really gotta admire the creativity and uniqueness of it all.
    It was a pretty hot topic for a good few people, but I don't think I could ever call KH3 a bad game. Like you said, it mostly had some absurdly large expectations, but I do think the title doesn't help either. As much as it was satisfying to finally get that title out, it kind of does do a disservice to the importance of the rest of the games without numbers. It's crazy to think how much stock people are willing to put into a game having a number in the title, imagine if Castlevania fans were waiting for Castlevania 5 when there were so many titles out there like Symphony of the Night or Aria of Sorrow not using a number. Or how Crash had several games, including some that even stuck closer to its original formula (albeit with varying levels of success), but the newest just said "nah, I'm Crash 4." It's just really interesting food for thought, I guess.

    As someone who was there since 2002-2004 I will say upon initial release I was rather disappointed. I remember finishing the game next to my gf at time and she saw the look on my face as the credits rolled and i told her I just felt nothing after beating that game that I had been waiting for for yearrrrrrs. It just felt like so much was left on table and the gameplay at time didn’t wow me how I thought. The DlC came out and it helped the overall experience and I think it’s the best thing to happen for that game but I can’t come back to play this one fondly like I did the others. I feel like even now there needed to be more. Hopefully we’ll get that w/ kh4 w/ new setting and being in “reality” but I don’t think I will have that same glow during the wait.

    I love Kingdom Hearts 3. To me, it's a 9 out of 10. My issue is we should have gone back to the Disney Worlds twice like in KH2; Toybox should made you explore Andy’s house, more Final Fantasy characters besides Restoration Committee, and at least two-three more Disney worlds ( and not put it in the trailer but leave it as a surprise ), and Pirates should have been the last world Sora goes to at the end instead of Quatradtum. Quatradtum should have been for KH5.

    What ruined it for me about KH3 was what they cut out of the game. One thing that sealed the deal for me was this one cutscene in Hercules world where Xigbar is talking to someone and legit, it just randomly cuts out in the middle of the scene. The dialog and music just cuts out, not even fades out. I remember I got the deluxe edition of this game at launch and thought that was a bug. I found out later that it was intentional and meant to be that way. And there are other scenes that just get cut in the middle just to be completed in a DLC.

      We still don't know why she was looking for it or what's in it.
      It had very little to do with the Xehanort saga they were currently trying to wrap up so you can say it was more of a teaser for the next saga with the new main antagonist.

Graphically it’s beautiful, I love the worlds (Toy Story and Tangled are my favorites) and it has enough zany and heartfelt moments for longtime fans. The endgame reunions are tearjerkers and make me so happy after being with this series since it started. Overall I think 2 is the better game, but 3 is great in its own way.

    Ever since the original kingdom hearts came out and I seen the special ending I've been making theories of where the game would go. I actually used to love that...talk wit my friends about this in depth story and reading fan theories was exciting. The way 3 dropped the ball with the story it zapped all the love I had for the series away. When 4 come out I will cop but I've already been disappointed wit the story so I'm not really invested anymore. For as long as I've been waiting for all these answers to all these questions I had for almost 20 years it was possibly the greatest let down in gaming to me personally. I realized I don't even game as much because of it.thats a LONG time to wait for a conclusion only to be given some bs story in the last 2 hours of the game. Christ I even played union x for the full 5 years it was out... union x had a better conclusion than 3. That hurt my soul...

      KH2 was exactly like that as well, the last 2 hours of the game explained 90% of the story. And the endgame in KH3 was the best in the entire series. I don’t know how any real KH fan could not have liked it. Especially the data battles and Yozora. And Sora and Kairi fighting Xehanort. I think you just don’t like KH anymore but that’s fine. Also, it was never supposed to be the last game. It was only supposed to Tie up all the unresolved threads at that point and start a new story, and it did that pretty much as well as it could have all things considered. And you admitting you’re gonna play 4, is you accidentally admitting you still care about the series lol. So it couldn’t have disappeared you *that* much

      I think every question that needed an answer was answered, and the answers were fine. Though the way they were given was a bit wonky.
      I'm noticing a trend in series like KH and Naruto, where the creator's are struggling with the characters they right because there are too many of them.
      Both authors said that they wanted to permanently kill off a few characters, but back tracked because they were too popular.
      Nomura might have made a better story if he didn't feel like he had to bring back a whole bunch of fan favorites and wrap up their stories.
      But those are just my thoughts.

    • @Bogustice
      @Bogustice ปีที่แล้ว

      @thewiseyounglad2699 I can agree with this. I remember when I used to go to back for kingdom hearts like "just because Disney characters are in the game don't confuse it for a kids game". The story was dark, characters died, the story was Intriguing. I was fully invested in the lore coming up with theories and stuff only for the final game in the xehanort saga to pretty much be me watching Disney movies that they placed sora in. Then tried to cram a kingdom hearts story in the last 2 hours. I was very disappointed. The keyblade "war" wasn't even a war. And the way they made riku and mickey seem so weak was insulting. Yea sora may have gotten raw but riku was still the truth. Not in 3 tho dude was so wack in comparison to the riku I remember. Half of the questions "answered" were in my opinion were asspulls (the whole xion thing being an example). They ended up making the game mad light hearted and the dark tone it had was lost in my opinion.

    Fingers crossed they go back to the more grounded and deep combat system of KH2. IMO, still the best of the series without question. All the different combos, drive forms, the keyblade combinations, and really finding a great middle ground between the Disney worlds and the Final Fantasy elements. Also, Sora just looked the best in that game with his outfit (and the drive form transformations) and his longer hair (have never been a fan of his shorter cut like in KH3, makes him look younger than in 2) 🤷🏻‍♀️ same with Kairi and even Riku to an extent. Dunno why, just was not a fan of any of their looks in 3.

You mentioned the Toy Box fight that had the Zorg color palette, there's also the Arendelle boss that was clearly designed to be Elsa but for some reason was switched to Hans. Oh we know for a fact now Disney axed squares plan to have Elsa be bake to do anything. They wanted to make her and the others party members and have Elsa be the one who ends up being the worlds “villain” but Disney said no which is why we’re left with only the big snow monster as a party member and an overall underwhelming world. Nothing past that is confirmed but it’s reasonable to deduce they meddled and ruined squares vision in other places.

      We sadly may never get to see the level of Disney bosses we did in 1 and 2 simply because Disney is as involved in the series as they are now.
