I think what's so funny (and fascinating) about Homestuck is that, well, there is the story told through the comic that explicitly expresses x and maybe hints at y. Buuut sometimes, fans really like y, then it's all about y-thing and x is overshadowed that eventually even the story (kind of) neglects it. Let's all be honest, Homestuck is a messy story with lots of unexplored/abandoned plots/ideas (*cough* Sylladex *cough*), an experimental sandbox. Then fans pick up their favorite ideas and build around that and make Homestuck an amazing experience. And it's nothing new really, some fandoms are very driven by what fan-created stuff (like Touhou) and heck even Greek Mythology's charm is the amazing artistic interpretations that stems from it (a fancy way to say fanfics and fanart)
