The bill was applied with malice at the lower levels. The bill was never meant to be used to lockup minorities. Remember that Black and brown people supported that bill until racist law enforcement agencies and people started using it as a tool for modern slavery.

He helped create the prison industrial complex with this bill. It's more prisons and longer sentencing. It also targets black Americans. I'm shocked any progressive would vote for this guy. That's not even mentioning he is backed by Wall Street and will cater to his donors. It's crazy to see people throw out their morals/values to vote for a corrupt globalist. The crime bill was written by Joe Biden yes, but with input and support from many. This is probably one of the few bills in history that passed with large bipartisan support. In other words, simply writing a bill doesn't make it a bill. It has to pass both houses and be signed by the President. In this case, it would mean over 300 people voted for this bill in the house and Senate combined. Bernie Sanders also voted for it. This bill is not responsible for the actions that occurred; it was the implementation and the application that is responsible. It was up to the states and how they implemented it that made the difference. Many who supported it, supported it because so many people of color were calling for action to be taken and wanted Congress to do something about it. The Congressional Black Caucus supported it. Why? The early '90s were a far more violent time in America, some of this as a result of the crack epidemic that plagued many cities during the '80s and very early '90s. It was a bill of its era formed because of the conditions that prompted its creation in the first place. Criticizing Joe Biden about this is just Monday morning quarterbacking. Many of those people now see that there were problems and agree that it needed correction. To simply put all the blame on Joe Biden is wrong and unfair.
So that's how he feels about the 1994 crime bill that he helped write...

There are usually multiple authors on a bill....... amendments get made, senators will add certain provisions to the bill which have to be voted on to be added to the bill. That’s why he can support parts of it but not others. He also acknowledged he wrote it quite a few times.

You’re incorrect. It’s still a crime but it won’t result in jail time, just mandatory rehabilitation. Weed is the only thing that will be expunged and nothing’s stopping people already from buying guns and then using them drunk. If you do something stupid and illegal while on weed or other drugs then that will be prosecuted and that would come up on a background check too, which is definitely the group you want that for most. So it shouldn’t affect background checks at all.
And no crime for drug abuse has worked really well in Portugal. They made all drugs legal and rerouted all the money to rehabilitation and education and the result has been the lowest rate of drug abuse in Europe.
People can recover from drug addiction and that shouldn’t mean they can never use a firearm for protection. Then people that live in rough neighborhoods have to buy an illegal weapon and risk doing real time.
