After lots of requests from our lovely subscribers - here is a video for those of you who want to knit but have never picked up knitting needles before! Or for anyone who hasn't knitted for a while and wants a wee refresher! Enjoy! Happy Knitting!
Dude thank you, you made it so easy for me to learn. After 2 hours of frustration and nearly quitting I learned how to knit in 10 minutes from you. THANK YOU!!!
I have tried to learn knitting for decades. TODAY I succeeded. Thank you for helping my dyslexic brain understand. I can't wait to try all of your techniques!
Same I do some crotcheting and have been wanting to learn to knit because I heard it's easier on the hands. Have looking at multiple videos and practically gave up for months. Out of all the videos I have watched this is by far the best video. I actually have gotten further in the first 15 minutes than I ever have.
Best knitting tutorial!!! I’ve watched several today and have gotten so frustrated. Wanted to quit but said let me watch one more. And the one more was this one and I got it! It’s the cross of the needles that makes it make more sense to me! Crossing them like a cross instead of like an X. Thank you thank you!!!
I do some crotcheting and have been wanting to learn to knit because, I heard it's easier on the hands. Have looking at multiple videos and practically gave up for months. Out of all the videos I have watched, this is by far the best video. I actually have gotten further in the first 15 minutes than I ever have before. Usually for me after the cast on it goes down hill. So thank you for making a video that I have been able to follow along with and understand. 10/10 will recommend. Thanks again.
I've been watching knitting videos for a month straight and was getting frustrated to the point of tears with each one. I don't know how I stumbled upon your channel, but I think it's gonna be the ONLY one I need! I definitely need much larger needles to start with, and definitely wooden ones, but I'm finally actually looking forward to coming back to this channel this weekend once I have more appropriate needles and yarn. Thank you for this clear, patient tutorial!!!
You’re the best instructor on TH-cam by far! I’ve watched several content creators instructional videos and I finally caught on because of your instructions. Thank you.
i couldn’t do it properly after watching the other knitters on this app but when i watched this i learned how to knit immediately! thank you so much for a good tutorial, very detailed and you really show where your going and telling us clearly
Well i have to say a huge thankyou for your video, I've tried to learn to knit lots of times but just couldn't do it, but watching your video showing each step slowly has made such a difference, I've just managed to knit several rows! Thankyou!
😮😮thank you so much I’ve been trying for two weeks and after seeing your video it all made perfect sense 😅 I’m so happy I’m finally getting somewhere 😊
I have been learning to knit and it has been extremely challenging. I have tried the simple cast on method with the thumb the first time around but I can’t recall what wasn’t working. To-day I have been trying a far more involved cast on method but I have clean stitches. However, when it came to actual knitting and creating knit stitches - it is an absolute nightmare. I am not sure what I am doing wrong because the motions and everything is so straight forward and simple and I am doing them step by step as taught. I did realize in watching your video, I am using cotton yarn and 8mm needles. The yarn calls for 4.5mm needles. I am wondering if that is perhaps a part of the struggle. I am going to redo my cast on by using the thumb method again and use smaller needles, I pray this will work! Thank you for the thorough yet simple video and tutorial!
Thanks for your comment! Sorry to hear you're struggling, it is really tricky when you first start out so don't give up. I think you may have been making it harder for yourself by using larger needles on thin yarn so try and super chunky yarn with those 8mm needles (that way you can see what you're doing more easily). Hope this helps!
Hello, I’ve probably watched 100 or more videos on youtube. This is (& thumb cast on) are the easiest ones I’ve found! Thank you! I am trying to re-teach myself. Your video is the closest thing to the way, my mom tried to teach me (I’m left handed & she’s right) we didn’t get very far. I’m trying to identify the lady’s dialect in this video, she doesn’t say her name (from Celtic knitting designs) ? Whoever you are , you’re fantastic! My mom is from Donegal , we live in Chicago. Anyway, keep making these they’re great! Thank you, Colleen
Ahh stick with it! Practice makes perfect! It took me sooooo long to get to grips with it. Try pausing the video and you can slow it down which may help! Best of luck!
Glad you're enjoying the video! Ah this is a great question, it's the 'tension' - how tightly you hold the ball end of the yarn which can either make your stitches too tight or too loose. With this one practice makes perfect, if you're really struggling on a specific project try using a larger size needle to cast on. Hope this helps! Happy knitting!
how do you keep the working yarn out of the way so you can go under the other loop to take it off. My working yarn keeps getting in the way & pops off. I'm having so much trouble with that. You make it look so easy.
Oooo good question, I had to actually look at how I knit and I seem to hold it in place between my middle finger and ring finger on my right hand but I’ve never actually noticed! See if that helps and keep trying! You can do it!
I am having trouble putting the needle down under the working yarn that I put around the needle to come under & bring off the stitch to the other needle. I never have enough room to get my needle over working yarn. I hope you understand what I'm saying. It's hard to explain. I've pulled it out at least 10 times so far.
Thank you so much because of watching your vidio i has asked my husband too get me a knitting starter kit may i please ask what are the best neddles too start off with.. bamboo or metle sorry too bother you thank you again Have a wonderful evening ❤
Wonderful! So there’s pros and cons to both - check out my knitting needle review video for more details! I go into the differences and what’s best for beginners etc in there. Have fun! Happy knitting xx
Thanks for your question. If your stitches are too tight it's the 'tension', which means how tightly you hold the ball end of the yarn which can either make your stitches too tight or too loose! With this one practice makes perfect, try holding the working yarn more loosely, and don't pull the yarn too tight after you've completed a knit stitch. If you're really struggling on a specific project try using a larger size needle to cast on. Hope this helps! Happy knitting!
I'm having trouble with the step before sliding off. Im struggling to get the needle back through with the loop. Is there another way to do that step? If i could just get the needle and thread and keep the needles touching so I can pull the needle through... Right now, the excitement of it is pulling off!!
Ah tricky one! Try ensuring the working yarn when you wrap round between the two needles almost 'clicks' into place and use your index finger of your right hand to hold the stitch in place. Hope this helps! Best of luck
Whenever I attempt to knit, there‘s always a large amount of yarn between the two needles. I never see anyone else get their‘s that long, and I don’t know what I‘m doing wrong. Can you give me ideas of what to change??
Great question, that's probably just your tension, how loosely or tightly you're holding the working yarn. Don't worry if you don't see it in the video, if I pulled my yarn loosely you would see the same thing. The most important thing is to be consistent in your tension, with this practice makes perfect. Hope this helps. Happy knitting!
Well my circular needles by Boye are size 10 and I think they're probably about one third the size, width, diameter whatever... I don't really speak Knittinese. Lol. I went and bought some needles and I am determined to knit today, right now, needles ready, and I am so happy about it, if I had a tail, I would wag it! Now, let's play monkey see, -> monkey do! I am ready! [Edit -> my needles are 5.75, so that's about like an I crochet hook, I'm thinkin'. ]
Ohhh they might be the old English size knitting needles, modern British ones are in MM and American ones are a different size too. If you google knitting needles sizes you should find comparison charts! Happy knitting xx
@@FlockAndFern Oh, dear, I couldn't care less about naming the size (but they are exactly 5.75mm)! Just from eyeballing it, they are the size I want for my project, which is about as medium as it gets. I don't need big sticks to begin, was my point. I don't see why big/chunky is a good way to learn. I don't keep track of sizes' names anyway. I look and see if the stick is the same size I want my stitch to be, and use that. Of course, my mind has already considered the yarn I'll use and how it will drape, which is why I've chosen the size of hook or needle that I have. I also don't read patterns, but I know how to make clothes, so I just crochet, or Tunisian, or knit the piece until it's shaped like it will go together as if I had cut it from a pattern. I still haven't learned knitting increase/decrease; like for arms/sleeves.. much can be hidden by a seam, after all, but, I will soon. I'm practicing my tension balance. I have watched tons of videos before and since this one, and have learned so much. I have discovered that the easiest way to knit is Eastern orientation Russian Continental. It's kind of cool doing a knit stitch on the back side of my needles and doing the exact same stitch movements on the front for my purl. I am going to learn Portuguese knitting next. There's a different way of doing stitches where you use your thumb to move the yarn where it needs to go, and may prove to be and even easier way to knit. I have tried lever knitting but I don't have a holster so it's a little difficult, but I took to it well.
My recommendation to new knitters is to 1.learn continental style 2. do your own double pointed needles from bamboo sticks 3.make a hook shape to one tip of the needle and sandpaper them to give them soft slipping surface 4.use hooktips for pulling the yarn. I wish I knew all these at the beginning. Low cost, no hand wrist pain and fast knitting! That is all
Oh nooo! Have you tried using larger size needles so you can knit them across easier? Keeping tension is honestly the hardest thing when you’re starting out, it takes a lot of practice. Best of luck! And happy knitting 🧶
I hate to tell you but this is not an accurate way to knit the thumb method - look how loose it is. To do it accurately you need to go into the wool on the thumb and loop it round so that it becomes a firm stitch. This is not meant kindly but hopefully to help you.
There are multiple ways to cast on. The method shown works effectively and is extremely easy. Just because you prefer some other way does mean the method shown is "not accurate".
My mom uses her thumb, too. There’s nothing inherently wrong with it. My mom’s (and this woman’s) knitting turns out beautiful and tight. Like crocheting, everyone has tweaks on the craft that work for them and still produce beautiful art.

I wasn’t really getting the casting movement with two needles, but using my thumb made it totally click!! Thank you for sharing this :)

Hi. Great video. Any available which help you on correcting mistakes (like dropping stitches)?
Hey Lesley, so glad you liked the video. Thanks for the great suggestion, we could certainly do a video for that. Watch this space!
Great vid - very clear explanation. Thanks
Thanks so much
Great learning tutorial !
Great tutorial

How do I not make my cast on too tight? It's hard for me to get the needle between the yarn
It sounds like you're putting too much tension on the string. Relax your hand with the working yarn.
I just can’t get the stitches on to the empty needle😞

Oh no! I can't crochet! Need to give it another go. Have fun!
I give up it is so hard I can't use 2 sticks all at once😢
Oh no try and stick with it! It does take a lot of practice at the beginning! Good luck!

This is the easiest way to knit!😂
I hate to tell you but this is not an accurate way to knit the thumb method - look how loose it is. To do it accurately you need to go into the wool on the thumb and loop it round so that it becomes a firm stitch. This is not meant kindly but hopefully to help you.

Hey that’s interesting. I was taught this method from a lovely lady in her 80’s from my knitting club about 10 years ago
Hmmm
My mom uses her thumb, too. There’s nothing inherently wrong with it. My mom’s (and this woman’s) knitting turns out beautiful and tight. Like crocheting, everyone has tweaks on the craft that work for them and still produce beautiful art.
Thank you so MUCH I finally learned how to knit!!!!❤❤❤🥹🥹
