I’ve been crocheting for around 2 years now and i’ve been trying to learn to knit recently, this is the first video that actually really made sense to me. The way that you explained that you need to pull the yarn you’re pulling over the needle into the loop made everything click, thank you so much for this helpful tutorial!!
im so proud right now!! i've been a crocheter for over a year now and have never tried knitting and guess what? i just did my first 5x5 cm stockinette swatch! thank you so much for the great tutorial❤
i just started learning knitting and followed a tutorial from another youtuber, i m not judging their techique but they had me put the yarn over with my whole right hand. it makes so much sense to just do it with the left hand fingers now i m fast af ✌🏻
They were an English style knitter, holding the yarn in their right hand. I'm a continental knitter, holding it in my left. I agree that it's much more fluid of a motion with the yarn in my left hand. One's not better than the other, but I definitely prefer yarn in the left hand
@@TheBlueMouseKnits i just finished a looong scarf thanks to you, the beginning of it looks a bit weird but i think i got the stockinette stitch down ✌🏻 great tutorials, thank you for sharing your knowledge and expertise 🌸
i’ve made progress finally! continental makes so much more sense to me as a crocheter, which may explain why i gave up when learning knitting before. Gonna try and cast on a first project soon!
I'm so glad to be of help! I did nearly the same thing when I first started knitting, took me 5 years to realize I had been purling wrong the whole time. I had only ever been able to get garter, not stockinette.
I was just about to comment this same thing im a crocheter of 12 years now and an all around crafter. I started knitting in 2014 but could only knit st. Now i can finally do both thanks to this video. I think its because you do english throwing and most tutorials are beg us to switch to continental style knitting but thanks a billion cause i just knitted 2 swatches practicing switching back and forth im so happy
I am a crocheter and I've always found knitting really difficult and complicated and i just haven't been able to get the hang of it but this video was so easy to follow and i can now do this stitch. i think what helps is that the way you show us how to hold the yarn is very similar to how you hold it in crochet so i found it worked best for me. thank you for your video, it was really helpful!!😊
So glad to hear it finally clicked for you! I started out as a crocheter first so holding the yarn this way was a natural transition for me too. Happy knitting
I have legit been trying to knit for years and this actually helped me lol. I’ve been crocheting for a while and this is the best tutorial I’ve seen to knit
Thank you for this video. I’ve been knitting for a few years but only just realized I’ve been twisting my stitches. Your video helped me realize I was wrapping my yarn in the wrong direction. I’m grateful for your help!
Just beginning to knit and could not get the purl stitch after watching many videos. Yours is the only one that made sense to me. Clear and concise and i could follow exactly how the working yarn is pulled over the needle. I’m still struggling with how to hold to get the right tension with the yarn in front but can actually now purl a row without thinking I am going to give up! Thank you.
You got this! Think of the yarn tension as your hook, instead of hooking the yarn with the needle you’re pulling the yarn on the needle. Hope that helps!
I have been wanting to knit for YEARS and the purl stich was something that has always frustrated me. However, after watching this, I am OVERJOYED right now!! It was the way you held your yarn over your thumb for the purl that made it FINALLY click!!!! I've never seen anybody else do this in a tutorial video and when I tried it my needles were suddenly flying and all the stiches were coming out just right!!!! I'm so excited I could SCREAM!
Thank you so much you are a literal saint I’ve been trying to learn how to do this stuff for a while now and everyone else’s videos that I watched were unclear and your was amazing so thank you ❤
Thank u dear for a beautiful tutorial. Am a crocheteer n knitting seemed quite complicated. I wripped out many a times but now after seeing ur tutorial am clear on wch row to work the knits n where the purls gotta go. Extremely beautiful tip at the end. Thank u so much. Will look up to more of ur videos!
I'm a complete beginner, and I've been trying to learn this point for weeks. I watched several videos and couldn't understand how to do it. And how simple it is! I finally got it thanks to your video. Thank you very much!❤
I really appreciate the different continental methods you shared for the purl stitches. Thank you! As someone expanding from a life of crochet and a couple years of just knit stitches (it started with wanting bands for my crochet hats that stretched and kept shape better, became flat squares sewn closed for knit hats, and now I'm just in love and want to do it all), left handed yarn tension is more natural and I could immediately see how your thumb method would work for me. You did a great job explaining it!
Lucky me i was about to knit my first project then I clicked on the vid and realized i meed to learn thos stich for it so i came to watch this video and this is such and easy tutorial so easy and so simple
My mom taught me how to do this. Didn’t know what its called until now but as a beginner I forget which row I was knitting in which pattern so I kept messing it up. Now hopefully I can keep track with her method!
You maked it so easy to understand thank you so much. I tried it for the first time and it took me less than five minutes to learn it . ( and I did it with pencils 😅😂) even your verbal instructions are just perfect for me thanks once again 😊
Thank you so much for this I started three weeks ago watching TH-cam videos on learning how to knit ,! I’m working on another scarf on one net stitch I think that’s how you say it lol now I’m working on another scarf learning how to do this awesome stitch you are teaching in this video ! I am so excited I can’t wait to see how it turns out 🤗🤗🤗💕💕💕💕
I did a scarf 4 pearl 4 knit and it turned out amazing, though I kept messing up and my pattern is different in some places. I also did a few other mistakes, resulting in a few holes. But I think for the little time I've been knitting that is great
I’ll die, I just can’t use needles. It’s so hard, i don’t know but using the hook makes me enjoy knitting, while needles stress me out, specially because all your work can be thrown away if the yarn comes off the needles. I love how you make it look easy 😭
I agree with the other commenters, it does get easier. I think the material of your needles matters when starting, if you're having trouble sliding your stitches across your needle then try metal needles, but if you find they slip off too easily then I would suggest bamboo or plastic needles to prevent them from sliding around as much. It takes some practice, start small and I'm sure you'll have it with practice. You can also find local small yarn shops near your home that you can go into and they would be able to help you. Good luck! There are videos out there teaching people who learned to crochet first, how to knit. Those might be helpful for you
If you are a continental knitter, you can also try the Norwegian purl for the purl stirches. Especially in a pattern where you have to switch between knit & purl in the same row.
I’m a continental knitter, and I purl by having the yarn in the back, and going in front. Much easier and faster, but that’s how I was taught by my mom. Tho throwing the yarn looks fancier😝 And we don’t throw, but pick up the yarn with the right needle.
Could you share which yarn you use for Josefine Dyring's projects? (Lang yarn is highly difficult to get in the US) 😓I am a beginner and would love to start one of her crochet/knitting pattern.
This is the first tutorial I’ve seen where someone explained purling in a way that made any type of sense to me. Some people take so long to explain things and it makes it so confusing.
Hi it depends on the yarn that you want to use. If you choose a yarn it will come with a recommended needle size written on the yarn label. I typically like to use medium (also called #4 or worsted) with a US 8 needle (5mm). That’s my go to combo. Hope that helps!
You do what's called turning your work, which essentially is flipping your work so all the stitches are on your left hand needle and the yarn is attached to the stitch nearest the needle tip. Hope that helps
Adding an edging at the the edge will help with that. This stitch (stockinette) will always curl without some kind of edging. People will commonly use either garter or rib stitch at the bottom to prevent this. Garter is great because you just knit every stitch of every row until you’re done with the edging. Hope that helps!
Thanks for you quick response, that sound logical@@TheBlueMouseKnits! I am already quite a few rows/hours of work in does that mean I have to start allover? :)
Yep, you'll want to easily be able to slide the stitch around on the needle so that you can also fit another needle into it when knitting. If you cast on tightly it might make the first row impossible. Working the knit stitches near the tip of the needles helps if the CO stitches are a little tight, but you want to make sure the knit stitch you create is sized to fit on your needle, and is not too tight. Hope that helps
Are you left handed? I hold the working yarn in my right hand...I’m a beginner and cannot figure out how to do what you’re doing as it looks SO different.
I am right handed, it doesn't really matter which hand you hold it in as long as you wrap the yarn around the needle the correct direction. I knit continentally, and hold the yarn in my left hand even though I am right handed. You might have better luck looking up a tutorial for english style (throwing) knitting since a lot of them hold it in their right hand. Hope that helps
I have a few questions, 1. Is purl and garter the same? 2. For the stockinette stitch, the front looks like the nice loom bracelets and the back looks like the purl stitch, but the front is done the same way I do the garter stitch? 3. Is purl the same as garter but while garter uses front loop, purl uses the back loop? 4. Wait, doing purl on the back loop is just for stockinette stitch?
Sure thing! 1.) Purl and garter are different. There are basically 2 types of stitches that make up all of knitting: Knit stitch and Purl stitch. For basic knitting stitch patterns you will use a combination of knits and purls. Garter is a stitch pattern where you only use knit stitches. For garter you knit every right side row, and also knit every wrong side row. If you were to purl every row it would look similar to garter, but the fabric would be tighter. Hope that clears things up. 2.) The front (right side row) of stockinette is the same as garter. In order to make stockinette into garter you would also work knit stitches on the back (wrong side row). Stockinette = >Right side rows: Knit across >Wrong side rows: Purl across Garter = >Right side rows: Knit across >Wrong side rows: Knit across 3.) Nope, hopefully my answer in 1.) clears this up, but garter and purl are not the same type of thing. A purl stitch is 1 of 2 stitches that are the foundation of knitting (the other being a knit stitch). And garter is stitch pattern which is a combination of knit stitches to create a fabric that looks a certain way. Stockinette is also a stitch pattern, so is garter. I think you are confusing right side rows and wrong side rows with front loops and back loops. Right side rows are just the side of the fabric that you want to show/display. And wrong side rows are the other side of your work that you don't want to display. Front loops and back loops make it more confusing, since there are more advanced stitches that use the loops in a different way. But, I think by front loop you mean the front side of your work (the right side)? 4.) Doing purl stitches on the back side/wrong side of your work creates stockinette stitch yes. Knitting across the right side (front side), and purling across the wrong side (back side). Hope that clears some things up for you
@@TheBlueMouseKnits this is such a great explanation! I picked up my needles after a 10 year hiatus and your videos refreshed my mind enough to get back in the rhythm. Thank you!
I always use Chiaogoo red lace needles. They are circular needles, but you can use them for knitting flat or in the round. I typically use a US 8 (5mm) needle when using worsted weight yarn which is what I think I’m using in this video.
Sanırım en düzgün görünen düz örgü şekli bu. Ben farklı şekilde ilmekleri alıp örüyordum ve düzgün görünmüyordu artık bu şekilde öreceğim. Teşekkürler emeğinize sağlık 👍👍👍
I've watched multiple tutorials, is it essentially just switching between a knit row and a purl row? Or is there some flipping that I'm still not understanding
Yep, you've got it! You alternate knit rows and purl rows. If your first row is a knit row your second row will be a purl row. And from there every Odd # row will be a knit row (because your 1st row was odd numbered and a knit row), and every even # row will be a purl row (since your 2nd row was even and a purl row). Hope that clarifies it a little more :)
Yep. Knitting is witchcraft. I figured it was but I thought I'd check out a video to make sure. This is definitely something I would never be able to do. Good job, all you knitters, with your wizardry! I remain in awe. But from afar.
im freaking out. the loops are inverted every time... when i turn it over to purl i have the v loop pointing in the opposite direction. I am doing it as in the vid. i really cant find what im doing wrong
I think it either has to be the way you’re inserting the needle into the stitch on the left hand needle. Or the way you’re wrapping the yarn. One of those two are causing the twisted stitches
That’s not wrong at all. It’s a personal preference thing. Some people hold it in their left and some in their right. If you want a tutorial shown held in the right, look up an English knitting tutorial. That’s what a lot of people call holding it in the right :)
Correct, it's just a different way. Not wrong, just different. Thats fairly common for english style knitting (often called throwing), and I knit continentally (most commonly held in the left hand)
Not weird at all, I'm guessing you are an english style knitter. Very common style of knitting, I just happen to be a continental knitter where I hold the yarn in my left hand. But, if you have found your hand cramps less by holding it in your left then thats fantastic! Happy knitting
That’s normal 👍🏻 you’ll need to add an edging on the top and bottom and/or the sides to prevent curling on all sides. Good edging’s are garter and seed stitch, they’re both easy to learn
I noticed that during the knit stitch, you’re winding the yarn around the needle in the opposite direction than most other tutorials I’ve watched. Why is that? Example: m.th-cam.com/video/Egp4NRhlMDg/w-d-xo.html&pp=ygUSSG93IHRvIGtuaXQgc3RpdGNo
Hi, the other tutorial you linked is knitting English style with the yarn held in the right hand. We’re both wrapping the yarn around the needle from front to back, it just looks different because the yarn is having to move around more when coming from the right hand.
im gonna be honest: no matter how many tutorials i watch and how meticulously i follow the instructions it always just looks like the purl stitch :( idk what im doing wrong maybe my brain is fried or something but idk how to make it work 😢
Hm I wonder what’s causing it. Are you alternating rows? First row of all knits and second row of all purls? If it looks like all purl stitches it sounds like you’re knitting every row

You can pick up and knit an edging on to the cast on edge if you’d like. That would fix the curling and allow you to not start over 👍🏻
Does the cast on stitch need to be loose I find once I've done the cast on and move onto the stockinette it's too tight

Stockinette =
>Right side rows: Knit across
>Wrong side rows: Purl across
Garter =
>Right side rows: Knit across
>Wrong side rows: Knit across
3.) Nope, hopefully my answer in 1.) clears this up, but garter and purl are not the same type of thing.
Hope that clears some things up for you
@@TheBlueMouseKnits yes, this does! Thank you!!!
@@TheBlueMouseKnits this is such a great explanation! I picked up my needles after a 10 year hiatus and your videos refreshed my mind enough to get back in the rhythm. Thank you!
What type of needle do you use and how many mm is it?
I always use Chiaogoo red lace needles. They are circular needles, but you can use them for knitting flat or in the round. I typically use a US 8 (5mm) needle when using worsted weight yarn which is what I think I’m using in this video.
Sanırım en düzgün görünen düz örgü şekli bu. Ben farklı şekilde ilmekleri alıp örüyordum ve düzgün görünmüyordu artık bu şekilde öreceğim. Teşekkürler emeğinize sağlık 👍👍👍
I'm glad it was helpful for you
@@TheBlueMouseKnits Thank you 🤗🤗🤗
Very helpful
I've watched multiple tutorials, is it essentially just switching between a knit row and a purl row? Or is there some flipping that I'm still not understanding
Yep, you've got it! You alternate knit rows and purl rows. If your first row is a knit row your second row will be a purl row. And from there every Odd # row will be a knit row (because your 1st row was odd numbered and a knit row), and every even # row will be a purl row (since your 2nd row was even and a purl row). Hope that clarifies it a little more :)
I have been struggling with English style knitting which my local lys insisted on me learning. I guess I’m continental now
Thank you just learned it in seaconds
I'm so glad, happy knitting
Hey looks great. quick question are you left-handed? just for reference
Nope, I’m right handed. I do hold the yarn in my left hand though.
I DID IT 😊😊😊😊
Congrats!!! Thats a huge accomplishment, welcome to the world of knitting
Thank you!
omggg thank u so much!
How do you know where you left off?
The bumpy side is a wrong side/purl row. And the flatter side is a right side/knit row. Hope that helps!
Yep. Knitting is witchcraft. I figured it was but I thought I'd check out a video to make sure. This is definitely something I would never be able to do. Good job, all you knitters, with your wizardry! I remain in awe. But from afar.
Hi what needle size are you using?
Most likely a US 8 or US 7
omg thank u so much!
:)
im freaking out. the loops are inverted every time...
when i turn it over to purl i have the v loop pointing in the opposite direction. I am doing it as in the vid. i really cant find what im doing wrong
Are you wrapping the yarn around your needle from front to back? That could be causing it
@@TheBlueMouseKnits im wrapping it as shown in the vid as far as i can tell. ill keep an eye open for that.
thanks
I think it either has to be the way you’re inserting the needle into the stitch on the left hand needle. Or the way you’re wrapping the yarn. One of those two are causing the twisted stitches
it works again. i went clockwise through the yarn in the back🤦♂️
I am so confused because she's holding the yarn in her left hand... I always hold it in my right hand. Is that wrong?
That’s not wrong at all. It’s a personal preference thing. Some people hold it in their left and some in their right. If you want a tutorial shown held in the right, look up an English knitting tutorial. That’s what a lot of people call holding it in the right :)
tysm, very helpfull video
Glad it helped!
🤔I hold the loose end of yarn on my right hand, not left! It’s just a different way?
Correct, it's just a different way. Not wrong, just different. Thats fairly common for english style knitting (often called throwing), and I knit continentally (most commonly held in the left hand)
Cast on step??
I JUST realized I’m weird by holding tension in the yarn always with my right hand?? No wonder my pinky finger keeps cramping haha
Not weird at all, I'm guessing you are an english style knitter. Very common style of knitting, I just happen to be a continental knitter where I hold the yarn in my left hand. But, if you have found your hand cramps less by holding it in your left then thats fantastic! Happy knitting

One is normal the other is reverse ☺️

Why is mine curling?😢
That’s normal 👍🏻 you’ll need to add an edging on the top and bottom and/or the sides to prevent curling on all sides. Good edging’s are garter and seed stitch, they’re both easy to learn
@TheBlueMouseKnits thank you!
I can finally do it, thank you!! 🥹😭
Yay! Congrats!
Whoever you are, Jesus loves you
I noticed that during the knit stitch, you’re winding the yarn around the needle in the opposite direction than most other tutorials I’ve watched.
@@TheBlueMouseKnits i did alternate rows, which is what shocked me the most, ill try again later today maybe
