How to knit a coaster for beginners - Step by step tutorial

This is an easy knitting pattern for a square coaster and you can knit along with me. I'll show you how to start and finish this knitted coaster and it is the perfect project for beginners. At the end of this video, I'll also show you how to modify the basic pattern.
You start by casting on 19 stitches
Here's how to cast on stitches for beginners: nimble-needles...
And then you knit across the first row with knit stitches. Here's my full tutorial on the basic knit stitch: nimble-needles...
You will have to knit 30 rows. To check if your coaster is square, you can fold it into a triangle. If the edges meet, it's time to cast off.
Cast off, or bind off, is a simple technique to secure the stitches and prevent your project from unraveling. Learn all about it here: nimble-needles...
And once you bound off all stitches, you can cut the yarn leaving a tail of 8 inches for weaving in. Thread the tail on a tapestry needle and spear through the legs of the stitches between two rows. Go once in the other direction and cut off the rest of the tail. Do the same on the other side.
To even out the stitches and to get the knitted coaster into a perfect square shape, you can wash it gently and then pin it to a soft surface. Once it's dry, it will retain its shape. This process is called blocking.
To turn your coaster into a rug mug, simply add fringes with a crochet hook and some scrap yarn.
You can also adjust the pattern by "filling" the coaster with any other knitting stitch pattern you like. In this case, knit across the first four rows like you did before. But for the next 22 rows, only knit the first and last three stitches. The 13 stitches in between can be exchanged for any other repeat to practice knitting stitches. A knitted coaster will be a perfect gift, so why don't you knit a couple of them?

I love the finger dancing, so love that you aré constantly giving suggestions to make the knitting experience rewarding: different yarns work differently on needles made from various materials, so change yarns, change needles, be flexible. I've knitted for many years but I knit the English way. I'm a slow knitter and have been thinking about learning Continental knitting so more projects will get done :-). I have a tutorial here on youtube for super simple fingerless mittens. That could be a project you might look into and it's not very difficult either. Though, maybe a simple scarf in garter stitch using a nice chunky and warm yarn could also be a nice project - especally as it's virtually the same as knitting a coaster..just longer and wider :)

Bringing back memories; I learned knitting in Germany when I was 5 years old. I knit already 77 years and enjoy knitting every day. I love knitting Fishermen's pattern for scarves and caps. But knitting the Fishermen's pattern in the round does not work for me. What am I doing wrong ?
Hi again, Norman- I am back with my cotton yarns to make some serape coasters for my hacienda. My question is about how the coasters work. I live in Southern California, ice in every drink. Do I need to put a backing on these coasters? Will the coasters wick the “sweat” from an iced drink without staining the wood coffee table? I’ve looked at your double knitting, is two layers safer for my table? In that case, would it be better to sew two layers together and hide a plastic barrier between the knits? These are more functional questions rather than strictly knitting questions, I know, but I did want to tap into your immense knowledge!
Well, cotton soaks up quite a lot of moisture so you probably won't need any backing. I mean...at the end of the day you can just try it but i never had any issues. Then again, it's not that hot here in Germany :P

Ugh. When I tried to do this pattern, something went wrong. By the time I got to the 5th row, I somehow had four more stitches than I started with. I don't understand. Thanks for the tutorials though. I find you to be the most helpful content creator on TH-cam for knitting. Keep on being awesome.
When u turn ur work around , make sure that you dont accidentally wrap the yarn around the needle. That creates and extra loop.

Thx a lot! I used this video to try kniting for the first time. It was easy to follow step by step. It didn’t turn neat and surely it isn’t a square but it was fun! I just dont understand why from 19 stitches after few rows it became 35..😲🤨???
Probably when u turn around, u pull the stitch down or the yarn gets caught and that creates two loops.

The wool you have is 16 sticthes, 22 rows 10x10.
With that, you cast on 19 stitches and bind off at row 28
The one i have is 18 sticthes and 27 rows 10x10cm.
To follow their pattern, how many more stitches should I cast on /rows to knit ?
I am not sure I can follow your questions? Is this about gauge?
This is a little coaster for beginner, so size won't matter a lot. Also the gauge on a yarn label is typically in stockinette stitch and this is garter stitch, so you would probably be fine. And if your coaster ends up being a tiny bit larger...i mean, it doesn't really matter, does it? But you could just cast on one less stitch.
Dear Norman, I bought wool and it said on the label for 10cm 28 stitches and 39 rows on 2.5 or 3mm needles. BUT when I knitted my swatch it was 31 stitches and 56 rows with 3mm needles. I did seed stitch instead of knitstitch. Is that a normal deviation from the gauge on the label??
The gauge on the label is a non-information. Still, seedstitch is a k-p combination so it will have a drastically different gauge.
can i use way thicker needles? im a newbie and a friend said its better to use thick and big needles for a beginner.
I'd disagree. Forces you to adapt the wrong motions. The bigger the needle, the harder to handle. 4-6mm is ideal for most beginners
I need to learn how to purl continental style. I figured out how to knit this style, but I need to learn purling. I've knitted since I was 5 years old, and I just turned 74. My pointer finger middle knuckle is swollen and sore, and has been for a long time. I need to change.

according to my kitchen scale, you can. i needed around 11g per coaster.

for practise, sure. why not? :)
But be aware that acrylic doesn't really soak up a lot of water..so for entirely practical reasons, cotton might be a better choice.
Does the potholder have to be made of cotton? Or can it be acrylic?

Hmm..well, you'd need equally chunky yarn and the result would be closer to a blanket than a coaster

Hey Rachel, happy to hear you like my tutorial! It's a bit hard to tell what exactly you are doing wrong there but I'd try a different tensioning method. Maybe just wrap it around your pinky/index finger (whatever you do) once...or maybe just weave it through your fingers? Does this help?

@@R.Z_09 I see. Well it's really difficult to put this in words but you "only" need to relax. And that will come with practice. Most beginners grip their needles too tightly cuz their muscles and brain aren't used to the new motions yet.

it doesnt really matter. THis one is, i believe 4mm. But if yours is smaller, it won't matter.
Can you use barbecue skewers instead of Knitting needles?
Yeah you can but because there isn't an edge at the end of skewers when knitting needles do, it can be difficult. But it's doable and is a creative way around spending extra money :)

This coaster seems a bit thin for hot drinks. Can it be used for all types of drinks? Or should I knitt with 3 or 4 threads to make it thicker?
That will depend on the yarn you are using but the worsted cotton of this video is definitely thick enough. I mean, your hot drinks aren't 200° right? 😅😊

@@haranniumakanthan4 you should probably be able to follow my pattern to a word. I mean, your coaster will probably end up a tiny bit smaller so you could cast on 2 more stitches if that's something you are worried about (but that's hard to say because I don't know how tight or lose you knit).

Whenever I try to make a square it comes in the shape of something like a curved triangle or something. Do you know why?
Then you are not following the instructions..or you are judging too early...on the needles things may look a bit different

Hey Amanda, I picked this cast-on technique for a reason. It may seem a bit complicated at first, but it makes all the rest of the project so much nicer and easier.

It's much much easier but the first row will be very difficult to knit.
