Reckless U.S. Provocations Over Taiwan Risk War with China

  • As tensions heat up over Taiwan, everything the U.S. does is depicted as defensive while everything China does is framed as menacing, aggressive and authoritarian. But the island’s history has been totally left out of the coverage.
    How did Taiwan come to be? Is it part of China? How has the U.S. used Taiwan as a weapon against China both historically and today? Is there a similar situation with Tibet? With Xinjiang? With Hong Kong? Is this really about supporting self-determination and independence or part of a strategy by the U.S. to break up and weaken its greatest adversary?
    To discuss this, Rania Khalek was joined by Ken Hammond, Professor of East Asian and Global History at New Mexico State University and an activist with the organization Pivot to Peace.

I think she could draw in even more views while not sacrificing her content quality because these two are VERY knowledgeable about Taiwan history (Xiangyu esp. is Taiwanese) and they both did a splendid podcast series discussing about it, which could benefits from getting traction of viewers in return😃

      Probably not. As a Taiwanese, I'm happy to be independent/keep the status quo, and all polls show that this is what most taiwanese feel. If unification did occur, it would be because China invaded against our will, because we wouldnt vote to unify. So that's why we dont view the US as meddling, but rather protecting us and their own interest, whcih happens to align with our interests.

      Unfortunately this view is also one sided. As Ken thinks Taiwan believes the actually claim all of China. It says it in their constitution but do you really think the government and people believe it? Its the only country in the world that is forced to hold that stance because if they dare declare independence or say "republic of taiwan" that would immediately trigger a chinese military response.

    • @tweedy4sg
      @tweedy4sg 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@EHed-kv2wb How is his views biased? He is just stating facts as is known & documented. It's clear you only call it biased because it don't agree with your worldview or you simply don't to hear for that matter.
      And what do you mean Taiwan only country ? Taiwan is NOT even a country. Only 13 (or ~7%) of countries around the world or UN member states recognise it as a country. And they are are usually small insignifficant countries that no one cares about. And this is a fact. This is exactly what i mean... you can't accept the actual reality and live in an alternative reality.
      Lastly, it doesn't matter what the the "gov't" or people in Taiwan actually say or what they think about their constitution. It is a recognised & acknowledged fact around the world that Taiwan is a part of China and if they declare independence, China has every legal right to use all necessary means to reverse this. Look at what the US did when their southern states declared independence and created the Confederated States. I don't need to spell out the details, do I ??

    • @EHed-kv2wb
      @EHed-kv2wb 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@tweedy4sg the fact is irrelevant. Thats the point. Kent brings it up as if it matters when it simply doesn't. No one not even the government of taiwan or the people take the constitutions territorial claims seriously.
      Have you ever heard of de facto? De jure yes taiwan is not a country but de facto it is. It has its own military, its own economy, its own legislation, etc. De jure means mostly nothing in geopolitics because the reality (de facto) is that taiwan acts separately from China. Same with kosovo same with abkhazia and south ossetia.
      No one disputes what the constitution says, but no one takes it seriously either. To think what the people think as "doesn't matter" is to be ignorant. What the people of taiwan want to do with their island should be up to them, not China or the US. And what the majority want is the status quo. To be a de facto country operating separately from China.
      People in taiwan have every right to determine what they want to do. To say it doesnt matter what the people want is to just be a fascist.
      Also lmao u brought up the confederacy when they were the ones who attacked and tried to invade the North first But sure keep thinking they are equivalent 😆

    The core factor causing of the global issues is the US dollar dominance. Without any US military influences the Asian countries will be better off have their own trading currencies just like Euros. Unlike Europe, East-Asian countries remain a high production rate across the history due to its farming-based culture. Unlike the European predatory cultures (Colonizing and looting), The East Asia is a land of prosperity and it can feed the population by itself.

    What’s happening in Taiwan with news of US soldiers training their counterparts in that island, reflects the same scenario that happened in Afghanistan with the introduction of US limited military involvement , which later escalated to a full scale war against the Talibans. We all know the results of that 20 yrs. war in Afghanistan , where the US got defeated badly by the Talibans in their pickup trucks.! The US would get their latest war adventures in Taiwan no doubt about that, but would end up with the same results as they did in Afghanistan. !

      US leaders don't care about the outcome of war in Afghanistan, in defeat, only the American and Afghanistan general population bore the consequences. The US leaders win regardless, all they really cared about is that amount of missles and bombs expended so they can "legally" buy more and funnel capital into their pockets.

    22:32 Correction. The map of ROC is way bigger than PRC, due to the fact that PRC decided to accept the loss of territory since 1840s. The main exception are:
    1. 64 villages East of Heilongjiang river (similar to Russian transzeya region).
    2. Today's Mongolia, known as Outer Mongolia.
    3. Tannu Tuva, today's Tuva Republic.
    4. Huge portion of Gorno Badakshan, Tajikistan at the westernmost point of China.
    5. Small portion of Pakistani controlled Kashmir.
    6. Small portion of East Bhutan as per South Tibet claim(both China consider Simla Accord of 1914 illegal as it's not signed with the then Central Government)
    7. Northern Myanmar and certain bordering region. These were ceded to British Burma during the Qing Dynasty. They're most inhabited by mountain tribes.
    8. 11 dash instead of 9 dash. Besides, the PRC gave North Vietnam Bach Vi(Baiwei island) which is slightly closer to Vietnam than China's Hainan Province, as a sign of friendship.
    I'm stating this not for irredentist purpose but for many to understand. It's highly unlikely PRC would wanna cede or gain any lands

    It is truly ridiculous that Taipei claims all of China. However Rania, the hawkish pro-independence people are actually the most damaging attackers on the status quo. Declaring independance and abandoning the claim over China would violate the one China principle and could lead Beijing to bring all options onto the table. If we continue to see the Republic of China when we imagine Taipei's perspective, the status quo there is preserved and crisis potential is minimised

    • @edukid1984
      @edukid1984 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Taipei is SUPPOSED to claim all of China - it's very legitimacy as the Republic of _China_ rests upon proclaiming its sovereignty over the whole of China (even though it has not de facto been able to exercise that sovereignty since 1949). What infuriates China the most is ROC's current attempt to formally go it alone as an independent country with only Taiwan as its territory, which of course will spell the end of any hope for peaceful reunification and will force Beijing's hand.

    • @alantan9863
      @alantan9863 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      That's right. They have basically screwed up the pro reunification camp by brainwashing Taiwanese youth with Taiwanese not Chinese history (ie: downplaying Chinese past by calling Ming and Qing settlers Colonial settlers and powers, while calling Japanese Colonial period as Japanese administration period). Actually the red line is actually crossed when US Marine Corps were stationed in AIT several years ago, while the recent troop presence is a more flagrant. Not sure when will Mainland China act based on anti secessionist law.

    Monasteries in Tibet are like slave master centers, and lower class lama are forced into monk hood to work as slaves within the monastery while the elite class Tibetan are given the top master lama role to control the lower class lamas and they have control over the serf who lives on monastery lands.
    Also their rebelling failed during 1959 was primary because they could only get few peasants to join their cause, and most are forced into this rebellion force by their masters, however as soon as their masters were killed in the battle, these peasants surrender! There are a story written by Anna L Strong who say that two PLA was able to over come a force of 200+ Tibetan rebellion force, all because one of the top lama in the group died, the other lama just decided they want to surrender to TWO PLA soldiers. These two PLA soldiers told these "rebels" to wait on the scene for a full day before other PLA was able to come and arrest them. Eventually they were all released and that top lama who surrendered where given like 200 yuan for peaceful surrendering basically encouraging other rebels to surrender peacefully - this worked for most of rebels. This just shows how the DL rebellion movement has no actual support from the peasants of Tibet, as it's only supported by the elite 5% of Tibetan.
