How The Threat Of China Was Made In The USA

  • China is bad. At least, that's what even a glance of U.S. reporting on China tells us. It’s a way of reporting that follows a long history of constructing the Chinese - in news, popular culture and the halls of DC - as a threat. In the first episode of Backspace, a new media critique series from AJ+, Sana Saeed explores what China and the Chinese have looked like in the American imagination, how that impacts and is impacted by U.S. immigration and foreign policies, and ways we can retell that story.

same country that had a chinese ban and muslim ban under trump, weaponized suspect claims of a genocide that is supposedly occuring in china in the form of sanctions and unfriendly business policies. And unsurprisingly, in an echo chamber of incestuous amplification of said claim without rebuttal, americans comfortably bought into the notion that china is the most repressive country in the world. The irony is lost when america is drone striking afghan syrian and iraqi civilians without consequence meanwhile pointing fingers at china in a imaginary genocide where no death is occuring, with the said victim group shielded from the one child policy, doused with affirmative action policies to help said group with job placement, prioritized education and civic protection.

The same thing happened to Japan in the 70s.
When Japan's economic power was thought to threaten America's hegemony, there was a wave of anti-Japanese propaganda in the US. There were actually hate crime and murders of Asians in US because of it (just like the current Asian hate crime wave).
Keep in mind Japan was a "free and democratic" country in the 70s. Its only "fault" was that, during the height of it's bubble, it was becoming too economically successful, and that threatened America.

I imagine instead of "Uyghur Genocide", everybody would be talking about "Kashmir Genocide" right now, lol (even though in BOTH cases, there is absolutely 0 evidence that genocides are actually happening - draconian controls and personal freedom violations, yes in both cases. But neither even come close to "genocide" like the Native American Genocide, African American Genocide #BLM, or the Asian American Genocide #StopAsianHate)
Short term though, I think Russia would still be the #1 target for a long time if China doesn't exist. Russia already is the public enemy #2 right now.

Not mention about all riots happened in the world such as Hong Kong riot, Xinjiang riots, Tian An Men Protest etc. which organized by ARMerica , only talk about war. In 250 years of existence as a nation, the US has fought against 29 sovereign countries. (In Fact, since 1785, US have been involved, for 219 years, in some kind of war. And this wars, against all varieties of sovereign nations. From going against the Sultan of Morocco, to invading the tiny island of Grenada. Well, this means that in its entire history, it has only had 17 years of peace, and even fewer, cuz here the almost 5 years (1861-1865), of its Civil War of Secession are not counted (Union/Confederates), since this war was not with another country, but against US. And the wars against the Native Nations of America are not counted too, for the same reason). Anyway: US fought against 29 countries. It has "Grown" 711 times the size of its territory from the original 13 colonies. It has provoked with total impunity, Genocides, inside and outside its own borders, and assassinations of Gov’t. Leaders, Coups d'État and Economic Blockades in 6 UN member nations. (Between 1947 and 1989, the US tried to change other nations gov’ts. 73 times. It includes 66 covert Ops. And 7 overt ones. In Civil Wars: The US has taken advantage of and intervened without justification in the following Civil Wars: In Cuba (1898 and 1960). In Haiti (1813 and then 1915-1934). In Colombia (1899-1902 and 1948). In Mexico (1847 and 1914 and again in 1916). In Russia (1918). In the "Republic Banana Wars" of Central America (1912-1934). In Venezuela (1945 and again in 1948). In China (1857, and 1900, and again in 1945-1946-1949). In Korea (1950-1953). In Viet Nam (1959-1975). In Panama (1964 and again 1989). In Central Africa (1969-1974 and 1982-1988). In Nicaragua (1937 and 1985). In Bosnia (1995). In the Philippines (1898 and 1900)... In Kosovo, Libya, Lebanon, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Iraq, Iran, Yemen, Afghanistan, etc.). And more: US has almost 800 Military Bases scattered around the world; 93 of which are against China. On the other hand, China and N. Korea (The "Axis of Evil"), in 1,000 years of history have NEVER invaded anyone. These nations have fought their Civil Wars, defended themselves against foreign invasions, and secured their immediate borders, but they have never been meddling or aggressor countries. Do you know how many Military Bases China or N. Korea have outside their territory? None. Zero. Any. NADA! They do not have a single Base. These are verifiable facts. Neither China nor Korea will invade the world; US does... that's DONE, as US does in the Middle East. Iran also does not have a SINGLE MILITARY BASE outside its national territory, and it is surrounded by 16 US Bases, and it is US who call the Iranians Terrorists. Well, very good. You already know. Now, compare the Greatness of the US with the Greatness of China. The "Greatness" of the US is built on the foundations of Piracy, Slavery, Genocide, the Assassination of opponents, Opium Traffic, or Cocaine in its case, and is under the foundations of the weakness of other sovereign nations. LOL…..Chai from Malaysia.

I am from Hong Kong and have become a Canadian like Sana. I worked in the mainstream media in the early days of my career and actually built a national Chinese language television station in Canada. That was a long time ago. When Hong Kong was handed back to China in 1997, I returned to my hometown to watch the historical event. I ended up getting a job in China and lived there for almost two decades. I have witnessed China's rise and I can share one of my experiences in a few words. I was utterly shocked by the complete disregard for factual reporting of China by Western journalists. I am almost ashamed to say that I started my television career in Canada working as a director for a news crew on the streets of Toronto. These so-called Western "journalists" willfully dissemble and dissimulate in their reports about China, and they twist everything about China with a negative narrative. It is their job to be dishonest about China and they're happy to make a living doing it. China is by no means a perfect society, and no one should lie about that, but why should we expect any human society to be perfect? Given that China is a huge country with a long and continuous civilization, having a large and complex population but with scant resources, which is in the process of recovering from a hundred years of incessant wars and colonial plunder, its government has at least helped its people improve their lives from extreme penury and with a very disadvantaged hand. What has our government done for us lately, except crushing the people under a mountain of debt to send the people's sons and daughters into endless wars, committing atrocities in our name, and buying lies from the mainstream media, so we can all blame China? Meanwhile all the money flows into the coffers of the 1%. Sana's well-researched documentary unequivocally reveals the role taken on by Western mainstream journalists and their media bosses as disseminators of misinformation and false narratives in almost all their reports about China. Unfortunately, lies and fabrications will not overcome truth and facts. Not only will the mainstream media destroy our trust in them, they will destroy themselves as well as our society. This is what happens when our society no longer has trust. One of the symptoms of our sickness is how we now have lying presidents and lying prime ministers and lying lawmakers, and how it is now normal for them to lie. The problem is not that they lie, but that they lie poorly, like America's last president. I have recently written a short post titled "The Blame China Song". Feel free to read for a laugh. I mean China had suffered from a.World War and was the only country to get Experimented Biologically, Chemically, Physically and Morally. Right after the WW2, China also suffered from Mao's ill policy which took the lives of 30-40 million Chinese People. At that time, US stopped essential goods imports not just fromtheir country, Europe but also from Soviet Union. Even Soviets could help as much as they would have liked to help because US was kind of usinh their currency, technology and economic power to coerce Soviets into not giving China any help. So, you see China suffered the worst from the famines, WW2 crimes and only in the 80's did China truly opened up with reforms and the rest is history. This year is special and from this year, China us advancing towards a Hyperpower state. The 2nd country to be able to reach this within the next 10 yrs.

The assumption that China is 'uncivilized' is astounding and reeks of ignorance given the fact that the Chinese civilization has existed for several thousands of years. What is really meant, however, is that China isn't bending to the will of Uncle Sam enough because it is different.... hence 'uncivilized'. And therein lies the heart of the entire problem.

LOL…..Chai from Malaysia..

It ASTOUNDS me how the US and North America as a whole perceives China. I am not saying that China doesn't have it's issues, it isn't the greatest country out there but it's nowhere near what Americans are taught from media. I have been there several times in my lifetime, both for work, studies and tourism. I lived there for years and when I say my life was much better in China I mean that. The portrayal of China in western media is heinous, wrong and dangerous. I've met several North Americans in China who thought China was literal hell on Earth until they went there. But the thing is, many other foreigners I met there from Europe, Africa, Australia and even South America never had these askew thoughts about China. Many of them actually perceived the USA as worse than China in terms of crime, racism, inequality, and overall "badness". NA is taught that China = bad and while China has issues in it's political systems, I'd say many of the Chinese people I met were rather happy and proud of their country. Many of my Chinese friends here in Canada still have much love for their country and visit when they can. Western media just LOVES to paint China as a monster and the people gobble it up and in turn teach their children all these lies and literally what for? It's disgraceful.

The reason why US wants democracy to spread to other countries is a strategy known as "keeping the enemy divided and busy with themselves". This isn't to say that the US views everyone as enemies, but it's in their best interest to remain the hegemon while all other nations are small and divided without a powerful centralized government that can challenge US.
As of now the EU is having talks of forming a more centralized nation similar to the US, and the US government is watching it very closely because a united EU will definitely pose a new challenge to US.

For Dutch speakers in the comments, two docu-series by the same journalist that are worth watching, are "Langs de Oevers van de Yangtzee" and "De Wereld van de Chinezen". While it still has a Western (Dutch) perspective, it covers topics in a human-centric way and tries to cover different sides of a topic by interviewing Chinese citizens (and those of other countries) in their own language. Topics range from political to cultural, and where the former covers Chinese people in different parts of China, the later is about Chinese and native citizens in countries affected by China's economic growth.
I don't think there's a version with subtitles for English speakers, unfortunately.

My father was a businessman and (partially) owned a restaurant in HK in the 80s, 90s so I already had a perception about China which was a poor agrarian uncivilized society before going to mainland China in person for the first time in 2015. It is so crazy that he lived so near to the mainland China but still so "uninformed" about it. China impressed me with almost everything they have(systems, cultures, landscape, food etc+ even POLITICS). Literally blew my mind.
Thing is the American media and the American Style journalism heavily influence every other news outlet all over the world so the portrayal of BAD CHINA is a global issue now. Anybody saying otherwise are tagged as "paid" or "brainwashed" and it is so fascinating that people who has no real connection to China are so obsessed with bad China & ready to jump on anyone who doesn't agree with MSM media narrative!

I once thought the Americans were brilliant, smart and intelligence people who can discern and are not easily indoctrinated. Then as I grow older and until now, I realised the majority of Americans are naive, ignorant and, worst, arrogant. That has given me and my cohort the confidence that the American, are not that intelligence, afterall. Their perception of countries or people outside the US is, surprisingly, atrocious and misconceived. Now, many around the world know that the US media are the main culprit in brainwashing its own people to believe in falsehood. There is no longer true journalism except fake and false narratives of any country or people that the US dislike, as prelude to seek consensus to create war or to invade. This is bad for America as a whole, the death of journalism. In fact, the country is now controlled by the oligarchs and the plutocrats, the 1% rich. The rest of Americans have been dude and eroded of decency and righteousness. And particularly the so called educated middle class which are shrinking fast in the country's economic heirarchy. About China, the US may have successfully influence the misconception of the American people, thus the Asian hatred. This does not augur well for the US, as it has made the US appearing and becoming more like a rogue country. Imagine a conflict between the extreme left and the extreme right causing tremendous political conflict causing horrendous social unrest and destruction. Generally, the US is moving in the wrong direction and back pedalling the whole world. There are, fortunately, good men and women around to address and show concern for the distortion that have been perpetuated and insinuated by the US administration and the main stream media, including some social media.

As someone living in Southeast Asia, we have been fed so much negativity about China that until today many think the country is the same as the 70s. In short, we don't know so much about our neighbor which is literally living in the future now. It is great that with the internet, many Southeast Asians are discovering China through C-dramas very much the same way as we learned about SK thru K-Drama. Thru these viewing platforms (WeTV, IQIYI, VIKI etc) that are even free for certain series, we get a glimpse how their society really looks like today, the technology they use, their everyday lives, their culture, and even things like their healthcare, their police, their celebrities. And I learned they are not any different. More importantly I learned their history as told by the Chinese (this requires supplemental reading as historical dramas are fictionized) and not by the west. It gives you a glimpse of the Chinese consciousness and here they are coming from when they behave the way they do which western reporting completely ignores. It's crazy to think I am learning more from their C-dramas than I would from the media.

I would like to point out that some of these allegations against China were also used by the U.S. media describing Japan when Japan was preceived as a threat to the U.S. dominance in 1980s (e.g., intellectual property thefts, cultural invasion, unfair trade practices...etc.). I am pretty sure if India became the second largest economy and threatened to overtake the U.S., we will find all sorts of negative coverages on India's "caste system," their discrimatory policies against minorities and their territorial aggression against their neighbors.

The Americans are not disappointed because China is not becoming like the America, but because China is not staying always low and poor and just being the cheap labour for the Americans. Obama said it's impossible for the Chinese and Africans to live the same good life as the Americans! What the F! And Chinese will tell the world: we deserve, and we can, and we will live a better life, and people in Africa or other poor countries will, too! But let's be honest:
Anti Chinese sentiments have been around for a very long time. The CCP has very little to do with it. It was there at least as early as the Qing Dynasty, if not as far back as the Ming dynasty.
And it is not uniquely a phenomenon against Chinese. Every civilization suffers a certain degree of discrimination based upon what they look like on the outside and the actions of others belonging to the same group.
We simply live in a world filled with hate, and it's about time we all get honest about it. Some people hide it better than others. But at the end of the day, we're all different, and not everyone likes it that others are different to them.
We've all got our pride. We've all got our ideas about what's right and what's wrong. We all get offended and we all offend each other.
I'm not here to say anyone is more or less under fire than anyone else. Millions of Chinese were hugely fond of the US but are much less so because of the way the US is treating their country, including by sending aircraft carriers near China’s coast. This is extremely provocative and dangerous. People here should ask themselves whether they are ready to be drawn into a WWIII solely due to paranoia and hysteria by their media and government. Today there are 2 million people in concentration camps. China didn't lift 800 million people out of poverty, the government made those people poor in the first place & then to meet the goal of poverty elevation they lower the poverty line, so most people in China are still under the poverty line that the rest of the world goes by. Our current government, in order to create an image of unanimous voice against China, any pro-China voices on TV or air were suspended, prominent pro-China citizens are charged with dubious claims and put them in judicial running mill and are not allowed to go abroad. Now only bad news about China go on air with exaggeration or distortion. They even revise history textbooks in a way that treats China as a foreign nation avoid showing the links, and reduce Chinese-language classes, encourage teachers to speak a local dialect instead of official Mandarin Chinese.

Peoples' Republic of China= China (PRC)
      Republic of China=Taiwan (ROC)
This confusion started after WWII when a general Chiang Kai-shek who lost the power battle with Mao fled to Taiwan from China with his troop, took power and tried to make the island, which was previously colonized by Japan, become a "new subsitute China, subsitute hometown" for him. His idea was to move his "regime" from China to Taiwan.
"China" was called "Republic of China" before that general lost to Mao and moved/escaped to Taiwan. After Mao took over, the offical name of China had changed to " People's Republic of China".
That's why Taiwan is also called "Republic of China" (not People's Republic of China)- the name brought by that fled general, Chiang Kai-shek.
After the general Chiang died, Taiwan has gradually stopped being the subsitute dream homeland of Chiang, but back to her own, Taiwan. However, China had grown very powerful and threatened Taiwan against being just "Taiwan".
The important fact is that, People's Republic of China (China) has never ruled Taiwan, even for one day. However, the funny name "Republic of China" given by a general who "moved to Taiwan" has been confusing all the world .

It's not too different than what Russia did in the US during the 2016 election. Taiwan is a Democracy and is susceptible to these kinds of attacks.
