As salaam alaikuum brother when you return, you should think about maybe doing dawah or classes for reverts in The Bronx or maybe becoming a imam there, I’m sure you will do amazing work with the permission of Allah SWT.

What a pleasure! i am a traditional muslim, and i feel like we are being replaced by god by new muslims who deserve this name more than us. Pray for us so that God accepts us despite what we have become. It may be more difficult to be a traditional Muslim in a Muslim society than to be a convert in a non-Muslim society. It's hard to explain in a few lines. But to sum up our state, I would say that we suffer from a dysfunction induced by the history of the decadence of Muslim civilization. I think a serious reading of Ibn Khaldoune's Mukaddima will shed some interesting light on this question. May God keep you firm on the straight path. Don't forget us in your prayers.

People who do not value an Imam, will realize sooner or later that they missing a guidance within their own community, and after they miss that in their community they will appreciate it more in the future. and for people who appreciate an Imam they really know the Value of an Imam from Islamic perspective.
Most of the time small noise like that within the community is from people who still ignorant about it, so just make Dua for them so that Insyaallah they will understand or if you bold enough then talk to them.
May Allah make it easy for our matter and in our shortcomings. Ameen.

I do not why but I feel like the word 'empowering' is icky to me. Because that word is heavily echoed by the Western value structure and its usage will cause the assumptions and characteristics (i.e. Individualism) that embody that word to osmose into our paradigm set out by Islam and thus contaminating not only our Islamic value structure, but also our intentions.
Or perhaps, I am being way too pedantic. Just my two cents.
