First Robinson Crusoe, then Mageknight, and now Pathfinder... I end up purchasing every reaallly long board game video series you do. You remain the best reviewer around Mr. Royal.
I bought the game, played it 3 times and traded it away. I just couldn't get into it. For me the choices were obvious, dice rolls too random, and there wasn't a lasting penalty for losing. I gave it a go though. I traded for a dominion expansion, so it wasn't a total loss. I'm still looking for a good travel solo game that I can take to the coffee shop and relax with, right now Theseus the dark orbit is scratching the itch, but I'd like something a little more compact.
Good intro. I really like yer perspective on RPG vs. BG mindsets. It was a hump I had to get over, but it's totally worth it. Heck, a lot of the time, deciding how to interpret a card's rules based on the situation is very fun. I've been playing the heck out of this game, and can never get enough vids. It really is a holy grail for those of us who can't get the old gaming group together long enough nor devote enough time and effort to run RPGs anymore. I'm in love with this game.
I just learned about your channel today and Pathfinder is the series that drew me in. I hope you will continue playing the game as new adventures come out. This was a great intro.
I'm so glad that you have Pathfinder both the base set and the character add-on deck. Take your time in making the video. Looking forward in the next one.
My daughter and I have had a great time playing this game! We are already done with the first 2 adventures and waiting for the third to arrive on our doorstep.
Glad to see you do this one Ricky. I am just finishing the last of the basic adventures today and then onto the new burnt offerings path. It's a fantastic game and good solid family fun, especially like building up my character and collecting new goodies. Anyhow, hope you get these out quickly ;0)
About 25% of the rules questions are due to a poorly written rulebook/ambiguous or errors in wording on the cards. Another 25% is due to the rulebook lacking a detailed turn summary (thankfully that's been fixed on BGG go download that everyone). The remaining 50% are people just not reading the cards/over-thinking things. The game isn't that hard to play. And what an OP group you chose, Ricky. Those are the strongest 3 characters in the game. Glad you're doing this. Fun game.
Fantastic - thanks so much for doing this series of vids! I am itching to get my hands on the Pathfinder Card Game already but am going to finish watching your series on this first (hopefully! 😉) I've played the Lord of the Rings LCG and this looks like it will satisfy my solo RPG itch much better.
Thanks everyone ! You'll have to forgive my indulgence in making the kind of video I do.. I know some folks would prefer I dived straight into game-play. But I wanted to do something different from the other kind of videos out there... and something for people completely new to the game. I like to keep my videos around 10-15 mins too, as 40min plus is too unwieldy for my hardware and software :( So forgive my self-indulgence and be warned, we won't start exploring until Episode 3 ! Thank you :)
Hey Ricky. Great videos! I was wondering what the music is that you have at the start and end of these pathfinder videos. Thanks! Keep up the good work!
Also on RPG's the DM/GM is there to make sure the players have a good time, not necessarily "kill" them. On a board game the win or lose could mean the killing of players.
I saw the first 6 minutes and i have to say that this "problem" about rules may accure, but it also is the beauty about board games! I would add videogames to this comparison and do it again. Videogames are fix, you can't change the outcome (for the most cases), than there are boardgames with "fix" rules that show you how the mechanics work. These rules in boardgames can be tweaked in the way the playgroup is fine about it and than there are rpgs where the "fix" rules are meant to be used and tweaked by the gm. So the difference is more who has the power to change the rules! Videogames = Programmers via patches, rpgs = gm via storytelling and boardgames = the playgroup. Houserules are common and as long as the group has fun with it, you have the freedom! That is why i love boardgames. Have fun!
Oh and tweaking the rules of a boardgame is not cheating, that are "houserules"! :) For my understanding cheating in boardgames is when one player does something with purpose secretly, which the other players do not welcome. Don't get me wrong, losing in a game is perfectly fine. The goal is to have fun, and when there is a point in a game where we do not know better, we will decide what is logically, instead of taking a brake of the gameflow to ask the rulebook.
Great insight... thanks! I agree with the "cheating" sentiment. I saw a comment on a forum where someone was sad they got a rule wrong and said they were "cheating". A board game, like a film or a work of art, is meant to promot emotion, and if you get joy from a game then you are "playing" and having fun. "Cheating" is when you purposely try to deceive other people. And you certainly cannot "cheat" playing solitaire, unless you brag about you misrepresented exploits to other people :)
card checking: when you get a skill or fear etc., some say for example: Strength +1 BOX +2 BOX +3 BOX....do they stack or do you follow the number they are box at highest? Now is that different or the same for powers, etc. that say Power X (+1 BOX) (+2 BOX) there are some in parentheses and some that aren't...
one thing im unsure about is CHECK TO DEFEAT (no specific check) If I'm using Seoni the mage, what do I use to fight the beast if I don't have a spell? and don't use her 'power to discard to make an arcane' test? Basically what Im asking is, if it says check to defeat X bane...and I dont have an appropriate card that allows me to use X best skill, what roll do I make 'vanilla' wise to defeat X Bane?
another question, sorry, but you seem to be answering rather quickly lol... The rewards for all the scenarios for the pathfinder adventure game seem rather well balanced...until you get to 'approach to thistletop'. I noticed this when...I am playing a sorceress and my girlfriend is playing the cleric. Needless to say-- she benefits from the reward, "Each Character draws a random weapon from the box." I than looked at my girlfriend in dismay...how does that help ME? The sorceress? I get no weapons...in fact...1 out of the 7 heroes from the base set cannot benefit from this at all. Out of the character-add on deck, 2 out of the 4, cannot benefit from this scenario reward. Is there a specific reason behind this? Is there a reason why the card doesn't say, "All players draw a random preferred card type." instead?
ah well, this is a co-op. The rewards benefit the group as a whole, not necessarily individuals, so two weapon draws means two new weapons for the group. That's my best explanation :)
And Skinshaw Murders comes out next week (Oct. 21-26) if you subscribe on Paizo.com or the 29th in stores. They are bi-monthly so one will be out around Christmas too. All are 110 cards and have 5 scenarios.
You are supposed to turn all the cards around cept for the character/campaign/villian/henchmen so you do not see which items/spells/etc you're putting in.. ;)
So: after 1 scenario, of an adventure, from the adventure path...our group acquires new cards from that scenario. We may: rebuild our decks by passing between players, the cards we've collected. Each new constructed deck must conform to the list we have originally started out with as long as they match the number of type we original had. 15 cards total: x number of blessings, items etc...so if I had originally 5 blessings but after X Scenario my blessings counts are 7... I may choose between the ones have have, mix and match but they must equal 5...so maybe for example 4 blessings of the gods and 1 blessings of anashtu. And perhaps the group has pooled other blessings I may find better to replace the other BOG cards...all legal as long as it equals my starting umber of blessings and never over my deck size. Right?
yes... perfect !! to qualify: you cannot take any cards from the box unless there are gaps in your final deck. Only then can you take from the box (e.g. you have 1 item missing and no other players have a spare item) and you must take a BASIC card. Have fun!
Ricky Royal awesome thanks. yeah, it seems if there are gaps you kind of have a boon because you can choose any card from the box to fill the gap, IE choose an awesome card lol
Stay with me, lol; Page 10, encountering a card paragraph 3. It seems that, as long as the original character attempts 1 check...another character at the location may do one of the checks. So for example. X monster says roll divine or X monster is +2. Player Bob drew the balance so he must choose 1 check...the divine check or the combat check to defeat. Since there are 2 checks on this card. Bob makes the divine check and has Sally helps with the second check which is combat. The original player made at least one of the checks and therefor it is legal. OR Bob can do all the checks...he fails them all...but Sally may attempt to do the checks as well...slaying the monster because she made all the checks. Therefor the monster is defeated...even though bob failed....Sally succeeded.
The situation, of other characters helping, only applies to the checks to defeat and only in the situation where there is a THEN between two checks to defeat (e.g. ripnugget). And the group can only attempt each check once. i.e. you cannot attempt a check, fail, and then have someone else attempt the same check. Does this answer ? best wishes, Rick
nothing else... a tripod is all. I have a mac which came with iMovie. You can see what it does here, but it is an old version now, and there is so much more. i want to do but can't (e.g. overlaying images, more freedom adding text and photos, special effects). I have lots of ideas but am limited by my tech.
Well there is enough "rule lawyers" who will stictly abide rules in the rpg and can for hours discuss how two rules interact (and i am probably one of them) :)

... and his video and editing quality, all those close up shots. That must take hours of production

Glad to see you covering Pathfinder Adventure Card Game! This game has been getting tons of plays at our house. Really enjoying it.
This game is very addictive. You get a real sense of character progression and the Pathfinder lore suits a scenario based format. Great choice Ricky!
I'm so glad that you have Pathfinder both the base set and the character add-on deck. Take your time in making the video. Looking forward in the next one.
My daughter and I have had a great time playing this game! We are already done with the first 2 adventures and waiting for the third to arrive on our doorstep.
I love that intro/outro music you use. Its fantastic.
Glad to see you do this one Ricky. I am just finishing the last of the basic adventures today and then onto the new burnt offerings path. It's a fantastic game and good solid family fun, especially like building up my character and collecting new goodies. Anyhow, hope you get these out quickly ;0)
great video. suggestions on updating your cards and stuff per the errata? has anybody actually written the corrections on their cards?
OH! Thanks for reminding me about Project Aon! I'm in between books right now and would love to give the series a try.

I would probably play this with a Dwarf Fortress mindset. "You're all dead. Try again and try not to die."
Hey Ricky. Great videos! I was wondering what the music is that you have at the start and end of these pathfinder videos. Thanks! Keep up the good work!
Nice introduction, I held of from buying this game but something tells me I might be picking it up now! I look forward to the continuation.

I love all your videos! Thanks a million for you amazing "job".
Good game, btw.

It looks so fun I have to play it now.
Hey Ricky, again loved the video. I have a feeling I will be spending money on this game as well thanks to you!
OMG, why no gameplay ?!
Can't wait for it!!!
Looking forward to this playthrough! Thanks for this, Ricky.

just the highest, no stacking
Ricky Royal thanks

you fight using your Strength or Melee (imagine you are fighting with just your fists) die. Good question! Best wishes, Rick
Ricky Royal gotcha thanks
Been waiting for you to play this one. Although it has some flaws it's a lot fun.
Is this game possible without heals?
Yes! Watch the whole series and you will see :)

just the cards with " basic" on them..which are cards you could have picked at the beginning of the game anyway :)
Ricky Royal oh ok...so you can only take a 'basic' card to fill in gaps...not scenario that your currently in?
that's correct...basic only. Anything else has to be won during the adventure.
Great Job, Ricky! Well explained and: take your time! :)

This game, Thunderstone adv or Lord of the ring the card game? in terms of complexity, competitiveness and fun repeats.

valeros sounds a lot like madmartigan from willow lol
It does say "adventure card game" not "RPG card game"
thank you muchly!!
Well there is enough "rule lawyers" who will stictly abide rules in the rpg and can for hours discuss how two rules interact (and i am probably one of them) :)
Not a bad thing amongst like-minded folks. I can accuse myself of enjoying a good "rulebook read" !!

Yup, it was never my expectation it would be otherwise, but its marketing and word-of-mouth has been..shall we say...a little overkeen.
Well said. A boardgame based on an RPG world, yes. An RPG...far from it.
