Russian Empire (1721-1917) Symphony "Fantaisie sur l'Hymne National Russe" (1886)

  • Charles Gounod's "fantasia" on Prince Alexei Lvov's original "God Save the Tsar". The original "God, save the Tsar" was the national anthem of the late Russian Empire. The anthem, written by violinist Prince Alexei Lvov to the words of the Romantic court poet Vasily Zhukovsky, was chosen from a competition held in 1833 and quickly became one of the symbols of the Empire, its' simple one-verse structure and stately music congenial to the Russian character. It remained the national anthem until the Russian Revolution of 1917. Over the years many Russian composers made use of the theme in their compositions, most notably Tchaikovsky who quoted it in the 1812 Overture and his Sinfonia on the Danish national anthem. Interestingly enough, the melody seems to have been adapted by foreign composers as well, in this particular, the French operatic composer, Charles Gounod.

Russian Empire or Russian Federation, your land is majestic, your people are diverse and talented and you have something I envy you for: love of country. True patriotism. A feeling of community and belonging. I would willingly fight for that. I am a descendant of the Boers in South Africa and we have a long memory. One thing we will never forget is how Russian volunteers came halfway around the world to help defend us against the British. For that, I am in awe of you. Even more so after I visited Russia. About the composition
The Fantaisie sur l’hymne national russe (Fantasy on the Russian National Anthem) dates from 1885. Completed towards mid-September, this paraphrase of Alexey L’vov’s anthem God Save the Tsar was premiered on 16 November at the Salons Érard in Paris by Lucie Palicot, its dedicatee, with the composer accompanying her on a standard piano. The orchestral version received its first performance under the direction of Édouard Colonne at the Théâtre du Châtelet on 23 February 1886. Someone not yet know what opportunity or reasons of friendship may have prompted Gounod to choose this theme.
In the 1880s, Gounod met the young Lucie Palicot whose virtuoso performance on the pedal grand piano kindled the enthusiasm of the nearly seventy-year-old master who in 1886 composed a grand orchestral piece based on the melody of the hymn in question and dedicated it to Lucie.
Also, it may be replaced pipe organ instead of piano pedalier (pedal grand piano) due to (a bit) similar features.
