In 1970, at age 18, I made my first trip to Europe. On a warm, sunny Sunday afternoon in June, the London Philharmonic Orchestra played the entire suite in Hyde Park, with actual cannons. There's no one like the British when it comes to pomp and circumstance, and boy, did they! There was some sort of a Royal Guard on horseback, parading around the Park. The sad part is that this piece was never truly performed according to the sheets until the mid 20th Century. Tchaikovsky was commissioned to make this celebratory piece for the grand opening of Moscow’s Cathedral, which was erected in honor of the victory during the Napoleonic Wars, it had been in construction for a long time and was finally ready for the grand opening. Cannons were set to fire to signify the Battle of Borodino, and then the Russian Victory, as church bells all over Moscow were to play following the piece. Sadly, shortly before the event Tzar Alexander was assassinated, and so all events were called off, so the piece did not premiere. In 1881 Tchaikovsky was invited to direct this piece at the Carnegie Hall in New York, but no cannons, and no church bells were used. Tchaikovsky died without ever hearing a propper performance of this piece. This however never bothered him. He never actually liked it, regarding it as noisy and exaggerated, not as refined and ellegant as he’d like.
It's crazy to think about that Tchaikovsky never heard the version he wrote on paper. It's also a bit sad, becuase there was so much preparation for than moment and it never happened. He liked it though, so I guess there was really no problem.
- Did u hear? Several people died at the last Tchaikovsky concert! - No way! What happened? - I heard one of the 'musicians' turned out to be a loose cannon...
I just recently started learning cannon, its very precise and intricate instrument to play. Update: I will be playing Cannon in the London symphony last friday😀
Oh, yeah!!!!!!! As a lib-tard from Boston-GO cannon. I have a great picture of the USS Constitution firing it's guns on July 4. Maybe 1 sec after firing. Blank charge(black chunk), firing plume, and all. What a great scene, and picture.
It wasn't until 74 years after this piece was first composed that the cannon fire and church bells were played in sync to the rest of the music. Since it was almost impossible to sync up cannons firing and church bells with the rest of the orchestra. In 1954, composer Antal Doráti mixed a studio recording with the sounds of cannons and bells properly synced up the way the piece finally intended. It was the first time since the writing of this piece that the music was finally heard as it was intended to. The reason it was so difficult to do it live was because so many factors like fuse length, type of fuse, where the fuse is lit from, amount of powder in the cannon etc. that determines the delay from lighting to firing a cannon, and church bells are on very long, but variably long ropes and the bells are of different sizes, different types, have different ringing mechanisms and there are different techniques to ringing a church bell which makes it extremely difficult to ring church bells or fire cannons with the precision needed for an orchestra. It was written in 1880, but no one heard how it was supposed to sound until 1954. It's unfortunate that Tchaikovsky wasn't able to hear it, but apparently he hated the 1812 overture.
That’s probably why he hated it then, if it was never played as intended until he was long gone then he never heard his composition, just a mixture of loud noises
Yes. It was to be performed with cannons at its debut in 1881 but Tzar Alexander II was assassinated and plans were changed. They were meant to use the bells of the new cathedral and an electric switchboard to sync the cannons but after the Tzars death, construction of the cathedral was postponed and the performance was delayed until 1882. In 1882 at the performance, the electric switchboard had not been installed as they could not secure the cannons, the brass band was cancelled and the cathedral was not finished, which did not allow for the bells to be used either. Tchaikovsky was not a fan of the piece to begin with and was annoyed that he had been chosen to compose it and was even more annoyed when some of the most important aspects of it were not present.
He always heard it. In his mind, all sounds existed in perfect synchrony as he had envisioned, regardless of the materialization of them. It was us who never really got to truly hear them. Right now we might have an aproximation of his vision, but nothing more :)
In the mid 90's at Ft. Hood, Texas, I was at the July 4th celebration at the sports stadium on post. They used M109 self-propelled artillery during the cannon portion of the Overture. It deafened us and set off every car alarm within 300 yards. Magnificent!

the first major use of bass boost/overdrive in recorded history, from what I can tell. the cannons are so loud that they create a distortion effect in the audio. he might be memed for it a bunch, but Tchaikovsky was doing what the modern producers do, long before it was considered cool, and somehow managed to be more famous than 99% of them to this day. absolute legend.

It's EXTREMELY difficult to perform this well with cannons. The guns have to be pretty far away from the orchestra and audience to not damage everyone's hearing. The speed of sound is ridiculously slow so the gun will have to be fired a second or two before the conductor signals the beat it's supposed to land on. When I performed it, they had three guns and the artillery crews were able to hit every one of the blasts which was very impressive, but they were not really as on beat as would be ideal.
We performed this once too at the Queens, New York street orchestra and one of our cannon players accidently hit someone in the crowd. I think he forgot we were supposed to have blanks for this piece, which has a slightly flattened tune.

The war ends and the man returns triumphant to the cheers of his people and his wife. It ends with his joy of returning to his son and how that is the greatest honor.

Tchaikovsky: ''Is cannon an instrument?''
Sounds like something zoidberg would say
bro
When the 1812 overture is written in 1880 and finally gets played as intended in 1950
That’s probably why he hated it then, if it was never played as intended until he was long gone then he never heard his composition, just a mixture of loud noises
Of course it had to be a Hungarian fella. God bless him for that!

When you see more than fff that’s when you know that they really want you to...as if you’re yelling at the people that put ads in the middle of a song fuuuu

Easiest way I could think of is using precalculated programs to get some embedded controller fire the cannons or tell the gunner when to fire them.
