Chris Stuckmann reviews Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, starring Harrison Ford, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Mads Mikkelsen, Antonio Banderas, John Rhys-Davies, Toby Jones, Shaunette Renee Wilson, Thomas Kretschmann, Boyd Holbrook. Directed by James Mangold.
The biggest problem with the 214 BC stuff is they didn't spend enough time there. It seems like they must have cut stuff there. It seems like such a huge set piece so did they really do all that just for 5 minutes of the movie. I would have liked to have seen more of Indy's reaction to being there to build on the idea he wanted to stay behind. They spend the entire movie getting there & then it's barely touched on. They could have easily cut 15-20 minutes from the middle of the movie & spent some of that time in 214 BC.
It's a very good point. Them arriving in the past was the only exciting part for me.
Yes I would have liked to have seen the wonder in Indy's eyes as he takes it all in.. And then rather than Helena pinching him out he stars to circum to his injuries and then she realizes she has to take him back to save his life.
Rumor has it Indy stayed in the original cut.
Agree. They should have cut out the entire Tangier segment, we didn’t need another chase scene.
@@RJ-vy9ch I think they should've toned down the Tangier segment by 5 minutes, which would've helped the film by a little bit and help save it for the last "time loop" act. That would've been cool.
When Indy says at the end how it’s incredible, that he’s witnessing history gave me chills. That’s was a nice touch.
Me too. I think that moment landed most with people who love history. Other people were too busy rolling their eyes and groaning at time travel, while I had goosebumps because that is something that I have dreamed about seeing all my life, just like Indy. For all the talk about the length of the movie, I wish we had maybe three or four minutes more in Ancient Sicily.
He witnesssed World War II, even met Hitler himself, what can be bigger than that?
you're the kind of person that just accepts whatever garbage Hollywood shoves in your mouth. this movie was abosolute DOGSH*T.
@@caomhan84completely agree, especially since it was ancient Roman history they showed which is my personal favourite era
Weird how I was the same. Why is this? Our love of the character and lore?
In 'Raiders' Indy _actively_ saves the lives of Marion and himself by knowing not to look at the ghosts from the ark. I like that a lot. Without him and his knowledge they would both die.
That's a good point. He's captured but not helpless, and his knowledge still saves them in a potentially lethal situation.
Exactly. Chris is just 100% wrong about this one.
Exactly. Not doing anything is what saves him and Marion. He let the Nazis destroy themselves.
Indy using knowledge instead of just killing a big bad made him a very interesting adventure hero.
I get where’s he’s coming from as I prefer his more active role in last crusade. But I remember watching raiders as a kid & it feeling so intense that Indy was captive & had to be there for the opening of the ark like oh shit what’s he gonna do he’s literally caught by the enemy. & then I had to close my eyes with Indy because I was too scared to see what happened to the nazi’s. So it was kind of an interactive experience. Idk how it plays out for an older mind though, haven’t seen raiders since I was like 5
The most melancholic part of the movie for me was Sallah saying that he misses the desert and the sea… god damn I was choking up 🥺
All the homies love Sallah
Sallah should have been with Indy not that strong female lead no gives a crap about.
Especially when he got demoted to cabby!
My favorite line in the entire film!
@louispacetime1576 _Desert_ not dessert, my man. You're making it sound like he's missing his favourite ice cream.
Did they ever explain how Indy's not still wanted for murder at the end? It felt like a bit of an enormous plot hole as I left the theater.
No. Like Chris, try not to think to much when watching. You will start seeing a lot of plot holes.
In the post credits scene the NYPD arrest him.
He came back with the dial. Also there was a ton of evidence that it was the Neo-Nazis who committed the murders. Plus he had a Nazi bullet in him (while likely matched that of the ones in the murdered victims). Not to mention witness testimony from PWB.
Well the CIA realized that he was framed. They say it in the film.
I was thinking about that too and my dad told me the CIA probably sorted it out
Indi didn't fight with Mikkelsen's character, the same way he didn't fight with Belloq, Mola Ram, Donovan or Spalko. Those characters are ment to die by their own greed more than for actual fighting.
Technically, he did fight with Mola Ram on the collapsed bridge.
im honestly 90% sure most of the online whining came from people that have never seen the movies, and just watched a "recap" on youtube, and went with the popular consensus to shit on the movie just to sound smart.
it's and awful movie. Just because you like it doesn't mean everyone else is moaning. Clown
Yeah, but Indy did at least fight their henchmen. I was actually looking forward to how they would do 80-year old Harrison Ford fighting that 7 foot tall hulk nazi 😅.
@@daffasudaryono785 I know! I was figuring Indy would have to do some serious outsmarting/using the environment to pull that off, which would have been great to see. Instead, we get an offscreen drowning death handcuffed to a rusty grate by another character. Really left us shortchanged with the villain deaths, especially given all the civilians they killed.
I guess the real Dial of Destiny was the friends we made along the way

Don’t. just stop!

In a way, that’s basically the message of every Indiana Jones movie 😂

Karen Allen herself recently told Entertainment Weekly that she regrets how small Marion’s role is in this movie. She wishes Marion had a bigger role in the movie. She wishes Henry took Marion on his new adventure with him.
I’m kinda happy she wasn’t there. She felt sidelined in Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and not as prominently focused like she was in Raiders of the Lost Ark. However I love how she’s prominently mentioned in Dial of Destiny and how her reconciliation with Indy lines exactly how Raiders panned out. Felt like a journey of pain which was destined to reach a poetic mark. This is just me. I can understand Karren’s disappointment but I’m least happy she was in the ending seeing Indy and not finding his remains in a museum dated thousands of years ago.
It might have been interesting to have Indy and Marion lving the good ol life married...and BORED😅 then one day they both go on a trip but they cant resist exploring a local mystery and they get into adventures together. Howevr being older they arent as good kicking ass but they each have their own type of wisdom and wit!
Well of course she does. Everyone wishes their role was bigger. Especially an actress who doesn’t get big roles anymore. But she was given a large role in Crystal skull. They didn’t know what to do with her
we all wish that. instead we got capt 4th wave femenism.
Karen Allen isn't a big star like Phoebe Waller-Bridge. She was fortunate to be in the film at all. They could just as well have killed her off in Vietnam like Mutt.
I think this movie has one of my favourite very minor character:
The pilot in the third act.
Like this guy (who has no name) is asleep in his own plane, completely unaware that some N4zis stole an older WW2 plane in the runway and are flying it, then some kid starts flying his own plane to chase after it.
Not long after he's waking up, he ends up in Ancient Rome where the Romans are attacking in Sicily (in a huge battle told in history books mind you) while his plane is also attacked because everyone thinks it's a dragon.
Then his plane lands, he sees Archimedes talking to some other folks you've never seen before, but apparently the kid does knows, one of them punches the other, and you all have to fly away to that weird portal again in the sky again in order to get back home.
And the best part is: No one will believe him. Like what do you do after all of that mess is over with and you end up back in your own time frame? Write a book? Tell your friends?
I was so unsure about the time traveling stuff at first, but the more I thought about it I realised how it really actually fit the character of Indy. What professor of arkeology and history wouldn't want to go back in time and see it with their own eyes? He already kinda got a taste of it when he met the knight in the last crusade. And I bet a lot of fans of history would agree.
But I get if people didn't like that aspect.
I agree, I feel like from a plot standpoint in a random movie it could be corny, but for Indiana’s perspective it’s cool and understandable to put in the final film. (I just think they could’ve done more with it. And personal opinion, the historical setting they chose was more boring to me but if it was in ancient Egypt it would’ve been cooler and more of a Raiders tone.)
100%! I actually thought that Indy would die in the past and I thought that was a beautiful ending for the character
Agree, I do feel like Indy’s development as a character in the ending was amazing and wholesome, any arqueologist would have that dream of seeing history unfold by himself, I just watched the movie, and believed it was a really good one
It really is crazy how divisive this movie is, for every person who likes it it seems like there’s the exact same amount of people who hate it
Online or IRL?
I definitely did not like it.. I found it boring and annoying.
Some people want quality, some people will accept anything you shove in their face.
I saw it. Thought it was fine.
@@dr.eldontyrell-rosen926 The "anti-Disney" crowd have declared it "woke" online and turned that schtick into an apparently very successful cottage industry on TH-cam, and I think THAT has effected the real life response to this.
I can understand some people not enjoying this final outing, but the outright rage makes no sense.
For the ending, I'm more surprised how they shot Indy who is an 80 year old man and then he just stayed like that for like 30 minutes, THEN Helena punches him unconscious, THEN he goes all the way back to the present and to a hospital without dying. At the same time, a CIA agent in her prime years gets shot at pretty much the same place and dies in like a single minute.
He got shot in the shoulder. She got shot in the chest.
I predicted how they’d write out Shia LaBeouf’s character for this movie and it was almost exactly what we got. And not only that, but you do genuinely feel bad for Indy and how it negatively impacted his marriage with Marion and what he wanted to do once he had the complete Dial. It also makes his reasoning for wanting to stay behind in Ancient Sicily understandable but at the same time, Helena was absolutely right to knock him out and get him back to his own time.
Outrageous that Shia LaBeouf is written out of the films like this. But now Can one still make a Vietnam War movie like Hamburger Hill but just Lieutenant Marine Mutt.
*Ancient Sicily
@@akosleoszilagyi2529 Right, thanks for the clarification!
Could not disagree more, it took away his agency. If anything, Archimedes should have convinced Indy that he should return to his own time. It would be like if his dad knocked him out instead of convincing him not to take the Grail in Last Crusade, it would have zero meaning to it!
Real talk: The best character in this movie was Sallah, and it isn't even close. His jovial and fun energy was such a welcome note whenever he was on screen.
In a movie that wants to bash you with how old and sad Indy is now, it was so nice to see a returning character doing well for themselves and loving life.
I was so disappointed he didn't come along
It was so lame the he is living in America.
I think the real reason why Raiders final act works with a captive Indiana Jones is because the story was building up to a point where Indiana has to surrender to forces beyond his control. It's a very powerful scene because of it.
I also have no problems with Indy being captured in the last of Dial of Destiny. I saw Indy in this movie as taking on the role of Marion from Raiders. In your other video you mentioned the reprisal of the "what doesn't hurt" scene from Raiders, but it's important to note that Indy was saying Marion's lines, not his own. Indy was also the one forcing Helena to bring him along, just like Marion did after the bar fight in Nepal. When you read Helena's character as being an analog of the roguish Indiana from Raiders and Temple, you start to notice how the film has completely reversed Indiana Jones role with Marion's. Similarly, Indiana shows Helena that there are things more important in life than fame and fortune, just the same way Marion did.
I also found a lot of the action scenes, though well directed, we're still a little too VFX heavy. There were a few times where I was like "They had a huge stunt team and budget, did that vehicle crash have to be CGI?"
Yeah I had the same problem too. The train sequence at the beginning also relies too much on CGI in my opinion especially when you compare it to the third film where they also did one and that looks way better without.
This is a big problem with James Mangold when it comes to big action spectacles he did with Knight and Day, The Wolverine, Logan (a little bit) and now this.
@@MrXabungle I guess the problem is, that because more and more CGI is being used, less and less stunt experts remain, since the demand for them is less and less, so less new blood as old people retire from stunt work. which in turn make using stunt more expensive.
Every modern movie today relies too much on heavy CGI one of the main things that doesn't pull me into a movie or even make it realistic, look back on the first 3 indy movies, real locations, great set peices and using real vehicles for one mainly thinkin of last crusade the tank scene, the bike chase scene, directors are either lazy or they don't have the passion or want to invest meaningful money into a project like its previous films to even come close to them.Alot come out looking too cartoony for me just my opinion.
@@raistitill though the first 20 minutes is excellent other than the the old Harrison Ford voice on young indy, the body double is a bit jarring too, doesn't really move like Harrison Ford.
It wasn’t a complete mess like most reviews are saying it is. And I’m glad you’re open and honest about this film. I liked a lot of this movie, but I also disliked some moments and decisions they made. It wasn’t a Perfect film, but man you gotta love Indiana Jones and he got a perfect ending to his last adventure.
He got the perfect ending in 1989.
As a Crystal Skull fan, I'm not happy at all that they killed off Mutt, they built this happy ending and threw it away just for making this sequel, but I have to admit this tragedy works to justify Indy's current state, when he remembers Mutt, all that sadness and pain that Harrison crudely expresses made me cry, I love Mutt, so those of us who love this character feel the same pain as Indy.
He finds out he had a son this whole time just to lose it couple years later.
Thats a Lucasfilm move alright
Hot take: the first half and final five minutes of Crystal Skull were better than this latest outing.
@@WillieHoule About a decade later. The last film took place in 1957. Vietnam really got going in 1965.
Yeah, I've always loved Crystal Skull and Mutt Williams so I really felt the loss of his character and how they woved it into the story. I thought it was a great idea.
I get why it happened though. Shia Labeouf kept getting into trouble with the law and is currently being charged with domestic abuse. It's no different to say Justin Roiland getting kicked off Rick & Morty for similar reasons. It wouldn't be a good look to hire him in the midst of all this controversy.
The big difference with Indy being tied up at the end of Raiders and being tied up for most of the finale in this movie, is that he didn’t rely on any sidekick to come and rescue him. In Raiders, he was still able to be the hero and work out what needed doing in order to save himself and Marion. So no, it’s not an accurate comparison
The final scene in Raiders was a spiritual battle that didn’t need physical action to be saved. All he needed was cumulative experience, and brain power to save themselves. There is also a running theme with God’s light through out the movie.
Plus he was still written to be smart in that scene, he knew to shut his eyes, and he saved Marion's life. But he's definitely sidelined at the end of dod
I was theorizing during the finale when Indy and Jurgen Voller would go back to 1939 Germany, older Indy would come across younger Indy (Like a Back to the future part 2 scenario) and they both have to stop Voller's plan from coming to fruition. But then I read James Mangold didn't want to do that because it would be too predictable. Understandable. I couldn't predict where the film would go near the end, but I'm so happy it ended on a better note than Erasing Indiana Jones from every timeline.
It was also wonderful to hear that Theme one final time in the theater.
you're the kind of person that just accepts whatever garbage Hollywood shoves in your mouth. this movie was abosolute DOGSH*T.
Big agree. As the movie went on and on, I realized that the movie was about chasing the dial and that, like Raiders of the Lost Ark, the at i fact wouldn’t come into play until the end.
Also -SPOILERS-the way things were handled, Indiana’s presence in 214 BCE didn’t manipulate the timeline other than Archimedes getting Voller’s watch.
If he thought that was gonna be too predictable then don’t do time travel at all. They could’ve done something like the first 20 minutes where Indy has to search for a lost treasure stolen by the Nazi’s during World War 2 which ends up with him fighting against retired Nazi’s and maybe Russians who looted the Nazi’s treasure post war. They also should’ve brought back Shortround or recast Mutt instead of introducing Wombat who really holds back the film.
@@tallerwarrior1256 They done a lot of things but I liked the film. Can’t please everybody. I liked it better than Crystal Skull. I agree that Wombat was a third wheel. ShortRound would have been nice but he went on and won an Oscar in another movie so good for him. Perhaps Sallah could have been there even though two old men would have been much.
All they needed was someone to SPOILER fly that second plane. Otherwise he was a drag.
@@cooltalktalks4944 yeah If Marion didn’t return, what life would Indy go back to in the atomic Age?
Depression, retirement? He loves archeology so much that having him stay in the past like you said wouldn’t affect anything. However if Indy remained in the past would that mean items like the Ark and the Holy grail would fall into the Nazis hands?
It’s that old time travel effect if you die as old man in the past, your younger self in the future disappears?
Maybe it’s because I’m a history nerd but I LOVED the Ancient Greece stuff. I had the goofiest grin the whole time during that scene.

Top Gun: Maverick brought back a great character in Pete Mitchell and put him in a world where he’s perceived to be outdated but he fights against that. I wish this film did the same with Indy’s character.
But Maverick wasnt almost 90 lol
That's exactly what is happening when he is the only one whom can read that golden tablet thing.
And Pete Mitchell walking into the ladies room just to get some ass in the 1986 film,.deosnt make me feel he's some sort of "real great character',..LoL
Hes a flawed, asshole, loner with daddy issues in top gun and as a US Navy Vet I can tell you Fighter Pilots aint "loners" the military stresses teamwork. Especially in combat arms occupations like fighter pilot.
Harrison wanted to do this movie to confront age. Top Gun was more about trusting the next generation to save your ass
This movie was about admiring your past and accepting your age.
Whether it accomplishes its theme well is debatable lol
Yep. I hate the “old, depressed man schtick”
It's honestly one of the things I also liked about Die Hard 4. The villain even says "you're a Timex watch in a digital age."
I had to put myself together after the film. We forget that Indy has dedicated his life to the preservation of history. And here we get to see him see what it was really like. He was able to meet one of his heroes. And he wanted to stay. He’s like “you know what? This wouldn’t be such a bad death” The end with Marion as well. This was the most emotional I’ve gotten in an Indiana Jones.
So yeah, I was difficult to talk to for 20 minutes
I don't care how old Harrison is I'm always up to see him play this charecter
I agree having Indy tied up for the majority of the finale is a let down, but it's worth it for the strength of the story. We need Indy there to build the incredible tension "i dont know where we're going but it sure as hell aint 1939" is exhilarating. The look on the Villan's face as he realises Indy is right is priceless. We couldnt have had this moment had Indy not being helplessly tied up. Having said that he didnt have to be shot to be captured. And he could have escaped to battle the Villans in the plane once in Anicent Greece, causing them to crash and Indy to make daring rescue and escape before plane exploded. But i still love the ending. Biggest surprise ive had in cinema since Infinity War.
if i had a nickel for every time a lucasfilm movie made a harrison ford father character a sad depressed old man who lost his son and wife, I would have two nickels. which isnt a lot but its weird it happened twice
If you remove the lucasfilm stipulation it's thrice. Bladerunner 2049 basically does the same, just with a replicant and daughter
What are your thoughts on Mads' character having his head smacked by a sign when he's hanging on the side of a fast moving train at the start of the film?
No kidding! My buddies and I thought that there would be some kind of face reveal, like half of his face was missing and he had a mask or something. But nope, he's completely fine. Then again, with him looking like nothing happened, it made me wonder if he had already gone back in time. I think if he had already "won" by getting the FULL dial in 1945, and then Indy had to right the wrong of that past, it would have made for a much more interesting third act. Instead of going back in time to the Romans, he finds the scattered pieces of the dial that have been hidden from the Nazis and goes back to the train ride as old Indy and stops Mads Mickelson. Maybe then there would be a theme to the movie, like rewriting history is never a good thing or something like that.
@@christopherpalanuk584 yeah when a character can survive something like this, I can't take the film seriously.
It becomes like a cartoon rather than a movie with any realism
@@wausjackbauer128 ah yes, because someone reaching their hand into your chest, and taking your heart out as well as 800 year old crusader are just typical stuff that happens daily
I'll admit, I was half expecting him to show up in the 60s with a missing eye, a scar, or a mechanical arm.
@fujipotato2452 At least there was mystique around the rituals and events that are fantastical in nature within the previous movies, such as "calima". But the suspension of disbelief gets difficult when something as relatable as a fall or being struck doesn't have any weight or realism behind it.
I doubt you've ever met someone who actively practices an ancient religion in the congos, but you've hit your head on a cabinet door or ceiling.
To be honest, I'm totally fine with how the ending turned out because, one of my biggest worries about how the film could have ended involving time travel was that he was going to die and that Helena would take up the Indie mantle.
I really hated Helena as a character and that would have been completely unearned to me so I'm glad it didn't go that way.
At least they were smart to not pass the torch and reconcile with Indy. This film is going to get over-hated unfortunately, when it's not that bad.
@@Spider-Man2099MCU Disney and Darth Kennedy have burned fans too many times.
I loved the time fissure contrast between dark/rainy, to sunny and clear
What about Indy’s looming murder charge? His blood soaked prints on that phone? Fleeing the country as he’s on the news everywhere being the main suspect in the faculty’s murder. It’s never brought up again and that drives me NUTS!!
Exactly like crystal skull where the FBI say ‘we are keeping a close eye on you’… never brought up again.
I actually just watched the Young Indiana Jones Chronicles that was about Indy coming home from Paris after WWI had ended, and there was a bit of drama involving how Indy didn’t even tell his father that he went to go fight in the war, most likely a purposeful way of irritating Henry Jones Sr.
The fact history repeats itself with Mutt but ends with him dying instead of returning home like Indy did break my heart. I feel like if you take that into account, you could interpret there being a bit of survivor’s guilt on Indy’s part.
I'm amazed how poorly this movie is doing financially considering how big the previous four were, but I guess the landscape of blockbuster cinema has changed even more dramatically since 2008 than it had between 1989 and 2008. When Kingdom of the Crystal Skull came out, the MCU was in its cradle and The Dark Knight wasn't even out yet. Crazy how Disney's own MCU has played a part in the shift that doomed movies like this and Solo. It's like the company is cannibalizing itself.
Think the bigger culprit was how panned the last one was, then there was bad word of mouth a month before the thing came out, giving lots of time for word to spread. Fact is, most people didn't have any desire to see another Indiana Jones movie. Ford is too old, fan base is too old too, thing was DOA from the get go, a bad idea poorly executed. I'm surprised anybody thought this was gonna be a success, frankly.
@@alexanderforbes1452 Surely if something was successful the first four times it will be a fifth, right? I haven't seen the movie and I haven't seen Crystal Skull in ages, but truth be told there was like no hype for this movie. It's weird in a way how people were acting like no one asked for a new Avatar, and now here this movie is performing like something no one asked for.
A lot of movies aren't doing as well as expected right now. I think covid really changed the landscape. People aren't just automatically gonna pop into a movie theater for anything anymore. Also a lot of smaller theaters and some larger ones are downsizing. Where I used to live there was a Regal right down the street from me. I would go to a movie almost every weekend and being a regal member ypu could get a couple free here and there. Last time I was in the area- pretty recently- I saw that that theater had closed. Idk. Its harder to make money i feel off many of these films when people know you can stream it in a few months. I definitely will see this but on stream.
I think the issue is how bloated the budget is. It’d easily make its money back if it was a $100 million instead of $250-300 million.
Disney had plenty of opportunity to redeem themselves and they blew it again. That's why nobody wants to see this.
Spoilers… I really enjoyed how Indy’s description of losing Mutt and how it affected him and Marion was turned on its head when Marion showed up. When she said that she heard he was back from Salah. His adventure gave him back a bit of his spark.
This fifth installment (which shouldn't exist btw) wrote one of the greatest protagonists in cinema history into a pathetic, sad, broken and miserable man. Reminds me of old man Luke.
Killing Mutt was dumb.
How is an 80 year old Indy going to win a fight with that massive German guy? That would just be absurd.
About the ending of 'Raiders':
Indy had to be tied with Marion because he wouldn´t blow the Ark in the previous scene with the bazooka (as the archaeologyst he is, he wasn't supposed to be). What we see is the full power of the Ark getting rid of the n4zis. So, Indy was wise enough to tell Marion no to look, but we as the audience could watch it (without dying). Very nice writing, Indy didn´t only phisically fight a lot of them, but was clever enough to survive at the end.
Yes. This.

At least in raiders Indy has the will power to not look knowing something bad is going to happen.. he also made a choice there, the ending of raiders is amazing too that way
Duchess Waller-Bridge was cast in this movie for three reasons:
1. her aristocratic British mother.
2. her famous director husband.
3. her rich businessman father.
And that narcissistic moron got the reception she deserved from the audience.
..........so what?
I feel that the main issue in this movie, aside from the points you mentioned, is that there is too much fat and it is not that well handled. Teddy and Mason (the CIA agent) were afterthoughts in terms of character use and development but the film still spends a good combined 15 to 20 minutes with them. Such time could have either been cut for a better paced movie or realocated to focus on Helena and Indy. Their relationship had too many "tell don't show moments" and that is a shame because they are both good characters.
Exactly. Helena and Teddy could have been fleshed out more and Mason definitely should have had a larger presence in the story. Heck, I think it could have even worked better if she was Indy's travel companion in this one because it ties in well with the 60s theme, she has personal stakes to it, and it would have helped resolved the Indy being framed for murder storyline more cleanly and clearly too.
More time spent with Indy dealing with the loss of his son would have made the ending better
it was the perfect amount.

Marion says at the end, "I heard you were back." I took that to mean the part of Jones that was Indy died when Mutt was killed in Vietnam. She thought she lost Indy forever.
I think a lot of the people who hate this film went into it already hating it because of feelings they have towards the Lucasfilm management and modern blockbuster distaste. I really enjoyed the film and found it to be much better than the last one. The time-travel climax was well written and the final scenes were well acted.
I went in wanting to like the movie and thought it was meh
Some people have standards.
In RotLA, he may have been tied up but he used his wits to actively close his eyes & tell Marion to do the same. That's not passive. That's him overcoming what otherwise would have surely been evisceration by either the Germans or the force of the Ark
To be fair he saves Helena and himself by grabbing the shute before the plane crashes
There is also the theme of God’s light, and playing with fire that runs through the movie.
Thoroughly enjoyed Dial but my criticisms were pretty similar to yours.
Side note: Time travel is the LEAST weird thing Indy has gone through. Bro, he saw dinosaurs in one of the novels.
Yeah but let's be real the novels don't matter at all in the context of this failure of a film. People know the movies in the first place, and in context of the movies it's pretty whacky.

I think it was a vise choise to not show too much of the time traveling. I was afraid there would have been a lot of traveling back and forth, and that might have been too much for people. Nice touching end scenes where he meets Marion again and his hat is hanging on the balchony. The movie could have ended right there, and it would have been fine, but the reaching for it does fit aswell.
It was a great idea for Indy’s final scene, but it would have been SO MUCH MORE POWERFUL if he actually chose it.
As many others have said, the thing I didn't like about the movie was the whole Mutt dying situation because it feels too similar to Han Solo in TFA. I feel like there were other ways to write him and Marion off without having to Poochie him 😂
It also doesn’t end the series on a happy note either. Sure Indy and Marion get back together, but their son is still dead. I’m glad Mangold took some swings with this movie, but at the end of the day it is still an Indiana Jones movie. I loved the film, but it was definitely a more depressing adventure than I was hoping for. It was definitely missing that Lucas and Spielberg magic as well, most notably in the pacing and action sequences
Han Solo was at his best in The Force Awakens.
You know what movie nearly ruined Han Solo? Return of the Jedi
Who cares about mutt williams lol
@@dawsynasay4841 and Indy is still wanted for murder of federal agents.
People need to stop comparing the films. Harrison Ford is much better in the Indiana Jones movies than star wars. Plus, Indy being all alone and losing his son makes sense. The man has essentially been a lone wolf since the beginning and he's never been unhappy with that. Sure he had a couple of close friends and some casual hook-ups but he never lived the traditional family life, and part of that is due to the complicated relationship with his dad. When you think about it, the creators never intended for him to be a "kept man." His true love was always "adventure."
The female protagonist is frustratingly cringe and insufferable to watch. If she wasn’t in it, and if you ignore the glaring plot holes, this movie would actually be somewhat decent.
But if Indy wasn't tied up, would else would he be doing? It's not like there was a lot Indy could do during the final battle anyways.
He got one last crack at Vollar before jumping out of the plane.
The conversation between him and Vollar about how his calculations were wrong was entertaining enough that I didn't really mind that he was tied up.
Indy does save Wombat with the parachute. He also gives here the “coordinates” to get back to the fissure. How else would a professor save the day but with math?
Just a weird nitpick, but I don't think Indy is supposed to be 80. Harrison Ford is, but not the character. Indy was a teenager in 1912, when the prologue of Crusade happens, so in 1969, he's about 70. This fits well with his retirement too.
Just look around. This film is getting HATE, deserved hate. I'm not trusting anymore any Stuckmann review, because he was fairly mild in his non-spoiler review, and him being a lifetime Indiana Jones fan and a film critic of previous credibility, it's obvious he's now part of the shill media. He's clearly not voicing his real opinion. This movie deserved a D- or a hilariocity review.
He’s a shill for disagreeing with you
@@ModerateLeftist89 not as simple as a matter of disagreeing opinions. All I'm gonna say is if you're a true Indy fan (and we all know Chris is), you'll full force hate this movie. Simple as that. It's like asking any original Jurassic Park fan what they think of JW Dominion or Fallen Kingdom. There's no way a true fan would ever defend that POS. Same here for Indy 5. There's this thing called "not expressing your real thoughts while you expect to be granted favours from other people", you know?
@MarcioNapoliphotography Now you're insisting he's being paid to say he enjoyed himself? Regardless of what you think of the film, you have to remember Chris is just reviewing from his own perspective, just because he liked a movie doesn't mean you have to agree. I'm sure he won't miss you anyway.
@@thegeeksage7149 I'm not saying he's been paid. But he's a filmmaker now, don't discount the fact he doesn't want to close doors in Hollywood. When you have loose ends is one thing, but when you don't, it's entirely a different game. He must please, or at least don't conflict, with third parties he might be asking favours in the future. Look, Crystall Skull was as bad (or even better depending on your POV) than DOD. And Chris DESTROYED with passion Crystall Skull. Said soooooo many bad things I wouldn't be able to count. Right there you had a man (a fan) voicing his true opinions, he wasn't connected in the film industry at that point. Right now, just remember he can't step on important people feet.
@ Super valid honestly, sort of forgot about that element of his channel. I apologize for the cynicism.
One reason that may explain is sin Ford's lack of action in the third act is due to the fact that he is literally 80 and he is in good health better than any most people in that age can hope to be but people get older and they aren't as sharp as they used to be
People tend to forget that.
@@Mrtfarrugia It's why the last one didn't work for me. His punches were so slow and it made the character of Indy almost seem like a joke because we root for him as a suave badass who is smart and sometimes just gets plain lucky. Destiny brings him down to earth and he tries to block and throw punches unsuccessfully. He moves slow and is tired. If Indy had had to fight that huge dude, he would have had to have electrocuted him or shoot him or something. I think Chris is wrong to say he would have like 80 year old Indy to fight that huge young villain. It would have been like watching his son swing with monkeys. I wish we had gotten actual trains and stunts more than green screen, which is what helps make the original trilogy so timeless, but this was a good story. Much better than Crystal Skull. That ending is terrific.
I expected Indy to fight more and he only fought a couple times like in the casino scene. His punches are few, but he still runs and goes on chases and climbs up mountains and ventures in caves, shoots, and even uses his brain to solve ancient mysteries which is awesome
That of course is a good reason not to have done the film at all.
So a skinny woman fighting fully fit bad guys isn't at all strange? We can forgive that since its a movie or perhaps a better choreography is needed to make suspension of disbelief to be so egregious.
Mutt: I have to go now my country needs me

Good plan... Jeremy doesn't make movies so he's not scared to criticize when something is a piece of sh*t.
@@greggibson33 True, we lost Chris
The amount of copium in these comments is crazy, i dont know how a real Indiana Jones fan can say they liked this movie that essentially butchered his character and made him a depressed old man that no one respects and the finale is Indy giving in to death just to be saved mary sue who is just awful the whole movie
You lost me at ''copium".
you had me at copium. all the people praising this film are unbelievable...
the whole "male hero whoes depressed and miserable but is saved by the spunk young woman who needs to get him out of it whoes p much better than him/is a complete bitch to him" shit needs to end. its getting tiring and honestly is kinda just disempowering our childhood heroes just cause its what the popular thing is now (thx last jedi)
I also was “sure” Indy was going to fight that giant guy. I thought he’d pop back in with a broken thumb or something even.
I was sure the big guy would appear with the grate hanging off his handcuffed arm, and that it would get caught on a door way as they escaped and he's get crushed by some trap.
Her having to hit him over the head to get him back as opposed to his father just convincing him to "let go" just makes sense.
Last Crusade saw himstill very hopeful for life and everything else in the beginning, middle, and end. He still had something worth going home for.
Dial of Destiny on the other hand saw a beaten and mostly defeated Indy, between his marriage being in shambles, son dead in the war, retirement from teaching, and a world changing around him to the point of being unrecognizable, of course it would take an extreme measure to get him to leave actual history to go back home.
Kennedy is on a mission to make every iconic white male character look weak and broken.
I think she had to knock him out because he didn't think he had anything to go back to... she did.. Marion
I didn't like how rushed and anticlimactic the ending was. For this supposedly being the final film of the Indiana Jones Saga, I was under the impression that they were gonna have him killed. Along with that and the plot hole of him being suspected of murdering his coworkers, it felt really off at the end.
Did anyone else think that in the 3rd act, they would actually end up back in 1944 and have a big fight-off? And maybe even spot their younger selves? I was expecting Helena's arc to have a full-circle moment to spot her Dad and that would give her some closure (Kinda like Indy & his dad in The Last Crusade). I was even looking out in the opening sequence for any sort of hint that their past and future selves might cross paths or have some kind of butterfly effect. Just a thought.
Yes! I really think that should have been the direction they went. The irony of Indy trying to stop the guy who is trying to kill Hitler would have been fascinating. I felt like what we got was anticlimactic
I can’t put into words how grateful I am that my favorite film series of all time is ending on a B+ movie when for 15 years I thought it was ending on a C- movie.
As someone who was not a fan of the time travel aspect, I still liked it. I agree with what you said in the non-spoiler vid where it seems like you either have to love something or hate something these days and that there's no room for nuance. I didn't think this movie was perfect by any means, I had plenty of issues with it. I still found it very enjoyable and would gladly go see it again.
So are you going to review sound of freedom or follow the media coverage blackout of the film?
I'll be back for the review for the next movie:
Indiana Jones and the Search for More Money
I felt also the lack of "punch" in the third act. But yet again, I also understood that he's 80 years old! What else can he do? I liked the movie a lot. Tried to not pay too much attention to the de-aging FX and the movie worked for me. Perfect? nop. But definately 7.5-8 out of 10.
Yea the most anti climactic ending lol. Indy really didn't do anything in this movie, he was just along for the ride. The beginning was cool tho
you're not paying attention to the story either, maybe that's why you liked this movie
The boat scene was ripe for a climactic physical victory. Old man love throwing people off of yachts.
so why bother everyone want harrison ford going back into fifth film, despite he already grown older and older? even he also had enough being han solo and rather he's character die already
@@laxman6223 How old are you?
NGL. I really didn't like this movie.
I just think it's sad Hollywood would rather spend $250 M to fund a legacy franchise with an 80 year old actor, than take a risk & fund new IP.
Nothing wrong with old actors - Eastwood's " Grand Torino" was amazing. This movie felt so meh. Like it was made by a committee to play it safe, save on marketing costs by sticking to a legacy IP, & familiar beats.
No wonder folks are ditching movies for less stale entertainment.
For me the movie unfortunately failed to find any valid or let alone artistic reason to re-open the story of Indiana Jones. Mangold and the team try their best and deliver decently, but the movie ultimately just demonstrates through contrast the genius of Spielberg and his outrageously well directed blockbuster magic. Barely anything in this felt as focused and organic as the moments Spielberg brought to life in the original trilogy. A pure studio mandated sequel that can't come up with a reason for its own existence. At least Harrison Ford seemed to have enjoyed his time.
Who wants to bet he’s not gonna review the sound of freedom
I still believe that the best sequels are probably Cobra Kai, they pay homage to the previous stories, they respect character development and the films that came before, and most importantly, they respect the lore and implement flashbacks in a meaningful way. If Hollywood took some pointers from Cora Kai and used this in all of their 'sequel/passing of the torch' films like the Star Wars sequels, the Matrix Resurrections, Indiana Jones, etc. Fans would be pleased, but most of the time, they end in such a drab, anti-climactic, and dull way that fans walk away from a beloved series with a bad taste in their mouth.
I'd add to the list Top Gun Maverick
The Star Wars Sequels, Matrix Resurrections and Dial of Destiny are ALL better than each of the movies that were released directly prior in their own franchises
@@saetainlatin lmao 🤣 no buttercup , fake military star wars doesnt make the list 🙄 for Christ's sake! People need to stop having old white conservative boners over this film.
@@SDfan2002 Interesting point that I actually agree with. However, I would also say that none of the directly prior films should’ve been made either.
The Matrix should never have had ANY sequels at all, they were all cash grabs.
The Star Wars prequels should have been written/directed by someone who hadn’t taken a 20 year hiatus from writing/directing.
And no one asked for any Indiana Jones movie after The Last Crusade. It was the perfect ending to a near perfect trilogy.
The latest offerings are just more of the same garbage.
Edit: And these latest offerings weren’t good movies, they were just less terrible.
I completly disagree with the star wars sequel, they might have better special effect and overall acting, but everything else is a huge downgrade, the story, the world, the art desing, the action, the characters, continuity, the music, etc...

Yes ok
Helena didn’t give Indy the choice to come back
However you could argue that Indy BELIEVES he has nothing to go back to, a conclusion that is SEVERELY flawed. He has Helena who has changed before him, he complained she was self titled and looking out for herself but she’s begging HIM to come cause she needs him too, and there is his friend Sallah and his children and now his grandchildren..and of course there’s Marion, estranged as they believe themselves to be, in the end they still thought of each other. And for Indy to make that selfish closed minded old age choice would’ve robbed these wonderful people.
It’s like
Getting a second opinion for a doctor. In this case a Dr Jones.
Yes, Indy thinking he had nothing to live for in the present is a very real, very humanizing thing for a 70s character who's lost his only child and is estranged from his wife. He also assumes he's dying. Makes perfect sense that he'd be "wrong" for wanting to stay and witness some of history in his final days. I don't get why people think that's a terrible flaw of the movie. Helena, with a new perspective on people and purpose (shown to her by Indy throughout the film) returns the favor and brings him back to the present. It all tied in so well.
I got so choked up when they called back to the boat scene in Raiders of the Lost Ark, I nearly cried, it was so sweet.
you're the kind of person that just accepts whatever garbage Hollywood shoves in your mouth. this movie was abosolute DOGSH*T.
it was cute yeah, but its a Nostalgic Bait
I loved the ending. Indy needs to live his life with Marion. I speak as an older person. I get it. Maybe younger people may have a problem with this but Helena is right. If he stayed he would have changed history. We each have our time. BTW Phoebe Waller-Bridge was marvelous. It's great to see a female taking care of herself without magic powers (although this doesn't discount that we others sometimes).
Trash movie.
Didn't exactly care for the grandfather paradox they used to show how the dial was created, but thought it was interesting that Voller assumes he can change time, but finding Archimedes' grave proves that the timeline is set and they can only go through the motions of what's already happened.
My problem with the movie is it follows this current trend of making childhood heroes into these broken, beaten down men. They did it with Luke, mostly did it with Han Solo, and now they've done it to Indy. Sometimes I wish the heroes could simply remain heroes. Indy's always had a joy for what he does, but it's barely visible in this one, except for the ending. The reliance on CGI for pretty much everything is also a bit of a bummer. It also felt needlessly harsh in how it just killed off people (not in terms of brutality), but that's not terribly uncommon in the Indy franchise
Well there’s good thematic reasons to explore these themes surrounding the ultra macho movie hero through the modern lens. There’s not much else they can explore with these old characters. I’m not opposed to portraying the harmful effects of the old action hero masculinity, it’s just as you mentioned with Luke though, rarely do these characters feel the same after many years cause of new writing or ignorance to source material. So instead of feeling like a breakdown of their original macho hero character it just feels like a complete dismantling of the character.
I agree, this trend is annoying and old.
@@pantsmcgee4997 There's an agenda in Hollywood, If Weaver came back as Ellen Ripley, they would never write her as a broken miserable loser that gets disrespected and mocked by a younger male character and they sure wouldn't have him punch her in the face.
Disney needs to understand they don’t have to tear down and/or change prolific characters (usually men) in order to cultivate and uplift new ones.
They don’t care about that cause most of the people in charge now are women at Disney and Lucasfilm
I love how this movie reflects on what Indy has done in the previous 4 movies, whether it’s through a callback of an action moment or the callback to a particular character. This was a movie not just about the passage/weight/effect of time but also a resurgence by finally doing something he never really was able to do previously. Which was to literally make your mark on history/mythology/religion. I also noticed through each different action they are showing a different element of what makes Indiana Jones the man he is. From mounting that horse in an Apollo 11/Anti-Vietnam parade to the final shot where he snags that fedora. He may be a man out of time but through the eyes of people like Helena, Sallah, and Marian he is needed more than ever. Theres a lot of good in this movie. It may not feel as black/white like the original trilogy but I think that’s the point. It’s an effective coda to the overarching character study for Indy beginning in “Raiders of the Lost Ark”
Thats a lot of cope you are huffing there
Or maybe he just sees something you do.

The little kid knowing how to fly a plane in a thunderstorm and following in the trail of the first plane Was quite a FANTASTICALFEAT. I could not suspend my belief
Agreed! I mean, there was literally a pilot in the plane! So it would have made more sense if he just pointed a gun at the pilot and told him to follow the nazi plane!

Thank you for still make reviews! You are amazing 😊
Just saw the movie--I actually didn't mind him being tied up for the finale all that much, surprisingly. The villain thinks he'll force Jones to watch him win, but instead, Jones figures out before he does that they're screwed, and he gets to sit there and watch them flail around and panic. I really enjoyed that, honestly! haha

@@TrollyDodger09 what are you talking about? Like? Lol
James Mangold made this 78-year old dude realistic by not having him fight a big guy or fight mad Mickelson at the end. He most likely would have been tied up and shot as an old dude
My biggest complaint is that there wasn't any resolution to the "Indy is wanted for murder" thing.
Just saw the film tonight. My dad and I really enjoyed it! James Mangold is quickly becoming a favorite director of mine. This and Ford V Ferrari are awesome!
You and your dad need to lay off the pipe.
It wasn’t specifically when she knocks him out to bring him back to the future that annoyed me, it was more Wombat’s character writing throughout the whole movie. Her character is so wildly unlikable and there’s really no reason for them to be at odds the whole movie, and her character choices don’t feel earned, they felt pretty random and cheap. The other thing was how Indy didn’t hardly even react when his friend died right in front of him due to his own actions. They just moved on from that so quickly. Overall it wasn’t a bad film tho, I enjoyed it in theaters.
you're the kind of person that just accepts whatever garbage Hollywood shoves in your mouth. this movie was abosolute DOGSH*T.
There were other things they could have done with Marion and Mutt: She could have been visiting relatives or working at some kind of mission or whatever; Mutt could have simply been living his life in another state, or he could have still enlisted against his parents' wishes (much as Indy did in WWI), but still be off fighting, with his future uncertain.
Speaking of Young Indiana Jones Chronicles, remember when he got off the front lines of WWI to be a spy largely because he spoke perfect German? It seems like the filmmakers don't know this, because he NEVER speaks German in any of these films, despite many times it would be very useful! I wondered if Ford just couldn't be bothered to learn lines in a foreign language, but this movie shows him speaking ancient Greek, so...
If Lucasfilm treats the adherence to canon for Indiana jones the same way they do Star Wars, then the films are the only real canon and anything else, even a tv show can be retconned or contradicted
so..
you're the kind of person that just accepts whatever garbage Hollywood shoves in your mouth. this movie was abosolute DOGSH*T.
I feel like the pandemic has convinced so many people that they're film critics now because they've spent so much time online and absorbed all of the worst cynicism and impulses like dismissing a film before it comes out, bandwagonning on one particular aspect rather than the whole film, and assuming every new entry in a franchise is a lazy cashgrab while neglecting the clear passion and talent put into many of them. The mental gymnastics needed to justify that "The Snyder Cut is exactly the same", that "Tenet is stupid," or that "Turning Red is woke" really shows how terrible the state of audiences is right now. The fact that all you said was that "it's not a classic but it's still good" and have rational explanations for why you think that yet have this many dislikes just for not bashing it like they want you to is pathetic.
I didn’t have the issue with Indy being tied up on the plane. The villains in the Indy movies usually die from their own machinations and miscalculations. Indy doesn’t usually kill them. In the case of this movie, the audience needs to know why the Nazi plan fails and why they end up in the time period. It’s Indy, the scientist and historian that sees the crates moving around on the plane and it triggers the idea of continental drift. Indy knows the villain is going to fail. He knew the Nazis in Raiders were doomed. He knew the Nazis picked the wrong cup in Grail. And in this movie, he knows that the coordinates have shifted and were not compensated for because Archimedes did not know about continental drift. The film needs Indy in that plane as an observer.
It felt more like Indiana Jones and Helena Shaw and The Dial of Destiny.
yo at this point they should have straight up hire Angelina Jolie as Lara Croft if they wanted a female indiana jones lol. Indiana Jones and Croft as a team would have been a cool movie back in 2001.
It would have worked if a more likeable actress took the role of Helena. Emily Blunt would have been a good choice.
I think the worst part of the movie is how they handle Helena's character. She is an unlikeable character who only cares about money and then when Indy sort of "exposed" her true intentions that she isn't doing it for the money, the movie never address that again.
And given that she was played and written by Waller-Bridge, the cancer... I mean the problem is Phoebe Waller-Bridge
Actually, that's a bit of a play. When Indy really presses her on why she memorized her father's diary, she gives BS answer. Indy shakes his head and says, "Nobody does that just for money." ... or something like that... implying that while she does do things for money, there is a heart in her that he sees. It's one of the moments that comes and goes so quickly that it's really easy to miss. It's why in my review I really leaned in on how many problems could have easily been solved with just a little more conversation that wasn't shouted out between chase scenes. Some small fine tuning would have made this a vastly different film.

Finally caught up and watched this movie. I thought it was great. Yes, some plot holes. But tons of fun, and clearly respectful to the franchise's history and the characters.
I loved the movie, but I was pretty disappointed on how they handled Mutt and Marion. Mutt isn’t the best character but he had room to grow, and I think just getting rid of him to serve the story wasn’t exactly necessary. I just think they could’ve found another explanation as to why Indy is down instead of what they did. The movie wasn’t exactly a happy ending unlike LC and Crystal Skull
I don't know, I think him dying put a lot of emotional weight on the story which I liked.
hollywood seems to have forgotten a concept called "Re-casting"
Just saw it a few days ago. Really enjoyed it! Also loved that Marion was there in the end.
I totally get your main criticism, but personally I don’t mind it as although Indy may not have beat Voller with his brawn, he beat him with his brain, as he had that whole “gotcha” moment of explaining that the calculations were wrong due to continental drift.
Glad you mostly enjoyed the film tho Chris! There are too many people just trashing this movie, and while it may not be as good as the OT, I’m a big fan of it!
I still don't see the point in killing Mutt off. They should have had him live and take over for his dad instead of Phoebe Waller-Bridge.
I understand that they weren't gonna use Mutt, so having him take over wasn't a option.
But they also shouldn't have killed him off. I'd rather just have Indy say that he's off in another country following in Oxley's footsteps.
James Mangold recently told Variety Magazine that Mutt getting written off from this movie had nothing to do with Steven Spielberg’s petty feud with Shia LaBeouf or his comments. James had the option to bring back Mutt Williams. He decided to go back to basics. He paired up Indiana Jones with another woman for his latest adventure. I wanted to see what James could do in order to see Indiana’s relationship with his son evolve.
