That is a great first image, Johnny, especially for a faint target. I can definitely relate to this video. It took me months to photograph my first galaxy, M81. Its amazing to know that you've collected light from millions of light-years away. Now that you have all that gear, we're waiting to see your next target (:
I got the same feeling, when after lots of research, and trying, I kept improving and improving, step by step. First, seeing the Moon's craters peaking above its "edge"... It was amazing. For all my life the Moon always looked 2D... and a bit unreal. But that moment it became real. Later I managed to see Jupiter, its 4 Galilean moons, its Great Red Spot, Saturn's rings, its gigantic moon, Titan... Seeing them move in real time, with my eyes... Changes everything. And this is just a beginning... I'll begin astrophotography soon :)
@@Sameer-sm4hu Well, a telescope, and some lenses :D In my case, for start I bought a relatively cheap Skywatcher 900/114 EQ, a 10 mm and 25 mm E-Plössl ocular, a 2x Barlow Lense, and a finder scope. If you are aiming for easy targets, like those mentioned above, you don't even have to use the telescope as equitorial mounts should be used. I bought an EQ, because in the long run, it will save a lot of time and hassle, when I'll finally learn how to use it well :) 1. You just place the telescope at a good place, 2. Put the barlow in the hole, then the 10 mm ocular into the barlow 3. Move the tube with hand, and aim the finder scope at Jupiter, etc 4. Have a look into your telescope, and if you have a good sight, you can already enjoy the view of Jupiter and its 4 Galilean moons :) This procedure could take 5-15 minutes, which depends on whether you've calibrated your finder scope or not: If you've calibrated the finder scope well, it's easy as a pie: you just put together the telescope, aim the finder, and voilá. 5 minutes or less. (Trust me, it's worth calibrating it, and it isn't hard, just google it) If you haven't (like I did for the first few times) you have to aim the finder at the target, and then fiddle for 5-10 minutes, while only moving the telescope a little at a time. After a while, you'll be lucky, and the target will appear in the view. Hope I could help! :)

I love this video. The "graph" of your journey with the dip, fog and how the beginning was the same "height" as the end reminds me of the Dunning-Kruger effect. As for those who don't know about the Dunning-Kruger effect, its wikipedia article defines it as "a cognitive bias in which people with low ability at a task overestimate their ability. It is related to the cognitive bias of illusory superiority and comes from the inability of people to recognize their lack of ability. Without the self-awareness of metacognition, people cannot objectively evaluate their competence or incompetence."
Dude! You’re a real inspiration. Definitely one of my favourite documentary producers. Amazing story teller, Photogtapher and producer. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 thanks man I sincerely appreciate your work. 🙌🏽
As someone who went through the process of getting a PhD, this resonated so much with me! I suffered a lot through a moment that I know recognise as the bottom of the cliff, and the feeling when things start clicking together after so much time and work! This is the typical learning process, for pretty much anything. But the harder the problem the longer it takes, the more time you expend in the bottom of the cliff, and the more hopeless it seems. But also, the more satisfaction you get once you get to learn what you wanted to learn :)
Hah. Um. Yeah. He did note that there's an entire community of amateur astronomers doing exactly this, and they've ah, been doing this for decades. Like literally since your grandfather's time. Longer actually.

I recognize the pattern of this process in my own life. We all have our versions of this.
Your picture and this journey are incredible! Following the story then seeing your final image actually made me say wow! I loved this video, thank you!

People who know the basics of astrophotography and know that most of his story is complete bs - its super easy to take pictures of galaxies... you can see dozens of them through binoculars under dark skies, and you dont have to buy 6000$ worth of equipment neither. He said it took him MONTHS just to align his mount - thats completly rediculous, it takes 2 minutes even for an absolute beginner...

Moral of the story: Mac is underpowered, PC gets the job done Whenever someone tells me Mac is better this is my argument, I get that Mac can be convenient but for the same price or less you can get a PC that will crush the job way better
It's tempting to say that, but I'd say the conclusion on the whole Mac vs PC debate is to pick the right tool for the right job. Obviously he's going to ham up his nvidia pc experience a little because of the sponsor. Also it seems a large aspect of performance increase was due to optimization of whatever his astronomy software is for Windows and lackthereof for Mac (He might have even needed to virtualize windows, and we don't know his Mac specs). There are many programs that are heavily optimized on Macs and outperform windows machines with better hardware. My main problems with Apple are as a company, specifically their stance on third party repairing. That being said, they can make good products.
@@Drkbowers1 Mac can be good and optimized, I've had a whole mass of apple products enjoy my mbp for jobs that it's more so designed to tackle. I can't stand when people buy into the misconception that Mac is better "because it's a Mac" I've worked on jobs where people show up with "the top of the line MacBook pro" and the job ends up taking exponentially longer, one time I told the guy I could literally go grab my desktop, and bring it back and the job would be done before the Mac could finish (and It could) Not ment as a flex, just can't stand how Mac can be priced so high yet perform so low
@@Supercon57 Yeah I'll never subscribe to the belief of one being better than the other. As a programmer, it's nice to have a Macbook for the ability to dev for every platform in a nicely built, mobile system. For gaming or for a particularly powerful job, I've got my beefy PC. But if I could only have one computer, I'd probably still choose a windows machine (laptop or otherwise) mostly for gaming. I think for an average consumer who doesn't play games, the newest macbook airs are decently priced a deliver a lot that the average person would want for their one computer.
John Lee Mac is great for many things. Windows can be better in many things. It mostly comes down to personal preferences and the software you use on a daily basis. Of you are a producer using Logic or a video editor using Final cut pro mac is the obvious option. If you want the most power for your money a custom built pc is the best option. If money isn’t a main concern and you want a great laptop Macbooks are a great option. If you don’t like mac there a many great Windows options or you could even buy a chromebook. If you already have a iPhone a mac could be great if you don’t like the apple eco system windows is the best option. Comes down to personal preferences and needs.
During this entire video I asked myself: 'Is this a thing Iz is used to?' Like does she know "Oh it's another one of his random new passions he is going to disapear into! It's just a thing!" x-D ? No criticism, on the contrary I think individual interests are a key ingredient to a sustainable relationship. Just wondering ;-)

Iz: that's crazy
The hole analogy is an absolutely perfect way to describe learning a programming language.
Yes! Agreed!
I'm currently on this path, it has just begun.
As a . Net architect I can tell you there are multiple abyss in that journey ;)
But, focus on smaller goals, remember to celebrate each one of them. And ensure that you enjoy the process.
All the best!!
I am looking at somebody else's code with noone to explain 🤯
This is Netflix worthy. Subbed.
its better than netflix worthy. just a reminder how shit that samurai "documentary" of theirs was!
That is a great first image, Johnny, especially for a faint target. I can definitely relate to this video. It took me months to photograph my first galaxy, M81. Its amazing to know that you've collected light from millions of light-years away. Now that you have all that gear, we're waiting to see your next target (:
Doubt he'll post more of this though.
What are the instruments you need to see this?
@@Sameer-sm4hu Well, a telescope, and some lenses :D In my case, for start I bought a relatively cheap Skywatcher 900/114 EQ, a 10 mm and 25 mm E-Plössl ocular, a 2x Barlow Lense, and a finder scope.
If you are aiming for easy targets, like those mentioned above, you don't even have to use the telescope as equitorial mounts should be used. I bought an EQ, because in the long run, it will save a lot of time and hassle, when I'll finally learn how to use it well :)
1. You just place the telescope at a good place,
2. Put the barlow in the hole, then the 10 mm ocular into the barlow
3. Move the tube with hand, and aim the finder scope at Jupiter, etc
4. Have a look into your telescope, and if you have a good sight, you can already enjoy the view of Jupiter and its 4 Galilean moons :)
This procedure could take 5-15 minutes, which depends on whether you've calibrated your finder scope or not:
If you've calibrated the finder scope well, it's easy as a pie: you just put together the telescope, aim the finder, and voilá. 5 minutes or less. (Trust me, it's worth calibrating it, and it isn't hard, just google it)
If you haven't (like I did for the first few times) you have to aim the finder at the target, and then fiddle for 5-10 minutes, while only moving the telescope a little at a time. After a while, you'll be lucky, and the target will appear in the view.
Hope I could help! :)
@@Tudvari Thanks for sharing your knowledge man :)
@@Noname-hc3lw No problem, glad I could help :)
This is literally the peak of storytelling.
Brilliantly done :)
Wow. Just wow. Awesome editing, great video premise, intriguing story. A galaxy is like the most awesome thing you can map out!
Man, the editing, the structure of the videos and especially the veriety of the topics.... This channel is one of the best channels on TH-cam... You're really doing a great job
Good luck man 👏
Wow, your dedication is impressive. Thank you for doing the hard part for all of us that would love to take this on. The computer made the difference but you brought it all together. i think HP needs to re think who they hire to spot light their products. Honestly you sold me on it. You really are a star yourself and they should recognize this.
"All that stands between that goal is a descent and a rise through this abyss".. Perfectly put.. Thanks for sharing your experience.. Really inspiring..
Johnny, Big Big Big Fan from India. Have seen every single one of your video and super inspired by your work.
16.02 is that your house? It ia beautiful!
I'm also from India!!

Amazing video, Most people likes to show off the success skipping the hard work, frustration, and failure, but you not only you showed how hard and arduous that journey was, but explained that learning curve wonderfully
Thanks man, I really need this now. Learning stuff is hard, and we need stories like this to tell the truth, then shine some light.
This made me realize how easily one can forget this curve.
I've been an Astrophotographer for 2 years now, and this really made me understand how i take my knowledge for granted.
So....whats your next target? :)
yeah same i was like well im bored of doing galaxies now its galaxy season but the happiness on his face shows it all wish i had that still
Insane video. Loved the editing, and thanks for being such an inspiration. I feel like getting into this stuff now. Have a nice day!
10:10 "I'm really excited about this new hobby of mine..." Lol. You have my respect for all your hard work and dedication.
No one:
Literally no one:
Johnny Harris: "Is it possible to take a picture of another galaxy"
Hah. Um. Yeah.
He did note that there's an entire community of amateur astronomers doing exactly this, and they've ah, been doing this for decades. Like literally since your grandfather's time. Longer actually.
Astronomers, both professionals and amateurs, ask this question at some moment in their lives.
No one, but also everyone.
Yeah no one has ever thought of this let alone tried this before...
Hi Harris, I love how you tell us about self-taught and your effort, I really in the same position as you right now, but at different skill set (more into IT as a developer, my bg is psychology).
And seeing you struggle was seeing myself right now.
Good luck for both of us !!
Dude... I've been struggling with a process when it comes to shading my art. This is so inspiring to me.... I didn't know i needed this video. Thank you.
Learning something new is incredibly hard.
I love this ad. It is about actually attainable hardware and instead of listing a boring spec list (i know computers really well and most people just use stupid buzz words) you just said "hey, this is a good gpu in a good laptop and it can help you create things easier" and im grateful for that
Great work, Johnny.
Interesting maps to see th-cam.com/video/F30OVrScax4/w-d-xo.html
On 14:55 Johnny Harris became John Green.
AHAHAHAHAH YES
@@jelenamitrovic1265 do you even know John Green he was the TH-camr who created crash course world history.😐
This is incredibly inspiring as an astrophotographer. Also, I'm going to show this video when I teach a class. :D
I needed to see this today. I've been struggling deeply with a new goal. And this has given me new strength. Thank you so much.
the sense of pride I felt when he showed the galaxy is insane
You are really doing great! Just love your videos! So inspiring and a visual treat! Hope you hit 1 million soon! Love from India!
"I'm really enjoying this new hobby of mine..." oh man, I felt that in my soul.
I don't wanna be snarky or anything but that's a neat way of describing the Dunning-Kruger effect
This is the most overlycomplicated yet satisfying ad for NVIDIA and HP. Well done!
This is my journey to learn english. I just watched this video 100 days ago then i jumped into this hability. I read, wrote and listening to english every day since then no matter if sunday or holiday and now im able to understand this video without subtitle. Still loads of work to do but im very pround of my evolution in this short period of time! Thx for the tips Johnny! now im going to develop another skill with the same concept.
You better not skip any ADs on any of this mans videos
I recognize the pattern of this process in my own life. Sometimes it's been required professionally, sometimes to learn something needed to meet the special needs of various family members, other times just to create new pathways in my life without the tools, role models, or funds to begin with. We all have our versions of this.
This guy deserves more than he's getting. How about he gets a job with Nat Geo so he can take his work to another step? My best wishes Johnny.
I don't think Nat Geo wants someone who needs a month to polar align.
Your picture and this journey are incredible! Following the story then seeing your final image actually made me say wow! I loved this video, thank you!
This video was very relatable. As a fellow astrophotographer, I understand the struggles and challenges of taking pictures of the night sky. Seen this from the point of view of an absolute beginner is very encouraging to see how far I have come in my journey as well. This was a fantastic video and inspiration to keep learning and not to give up. Thank you👍
Who in the world can dislike this. 🤦♂️
Flatearthers. knowledge deniers.

@@Channel-yr4jc 😂
Radeon graphics.
So I was listening to this video on my google speaker and when Johnny Said ‘Hey Alexa’, my Alexa went off lol.
Ironic in a way but still a great video.
😂
I am a you-tuber from China, and I want to make beautiful videos like you, you are my inspiration bro.
As an avid space enthusiast, this is one of my best videos I have ever seen on the whole wide internet. This is so good. Keep it up. This deserves an award. Amazing , Inspiring and all the words related to this out there. SOOOOOO GOOOOOD !!!
Bro this is absolutely amazing! not only the actual images but the perseverance to achieve your goal...just totally inspiring on so many levels.
Moral of the story: Mac is underpowered, PC gets the job done
Whenever someone tells me Mac is better this is my argument, I get that Mac can be convenient but for the same price or less you can get a PC that will crush the job way better
I can't stand when people buy into the misconception that Mac is better "because it's a Mac" I've worked on jobs where people show up with "the top of the line MacBook pro" and the job ends up taking exponentially longer, one time I told the guy I could literally go grab my desktop, and bring it back and the job would be done before the Mac could finish (and It could)
Not ment as a flex, just can't stand how Mac can be priced so high yet perform so low
moral of story, buy a desktop if you want power
During this entire video I asked myself: 'Is this a thing Iz is used to?'
Like does she know "Oh it's another one of his random new passions he is going to disapear into! It's just a thing!" x-D ?
No criticism, on the contrary I think individual interests are a key ingredient to a sustainable relationship. Just wondering ;-)
johnny and outer space got both things i love at once
The reveal for the image was breathtaking, absolutely amazing work capturing not only the galaxy, but the feeling of the journey along the way. Thank you
That moment when you first see some detail in an extremely distant galaxy, or nebula is unforgettable. It is what has kept my passion for astrophotography alive, and the drive to get better and better. Great Video!
Johnny takin picture of a freakin galaxy
Me: give up at part 2 of "how to solve rubics cube"
“stacking” your images is like long exposure ! man that’s kinda cool.... dUDE THIS IS SO COOL
What Telescope did you use
