Very informative video. Here in Colorado and other high-altitude areas, the oil companies screw us over by calling 85 octane "regular" gas and charging around 30 cents per gallon more for 87 octane REAL regular gas which they call "midgrade". Most cars specify at least 87 octane as the minimum, but most drivers here just buy whatever is cheapest, which means they are using 85 octane that is not good for their engine. I have always spent the extra money to put 87 octane in my cars, and this video vindicates me for doing that. Old cars with carburetors probably did OK with lower octane at high altitude, but I'm thinking that modern cars' engine computers reduce performance and mileage when compensating for the lower octane fuel.

Scotty...I have an Isuzu Trooper, 1987, with a C223 diesel engine, 4 cylinder: after watching you here, now I know that my truck is an indirect injection system. Since I leave in the Dominican Republic, we use deasil vehicle all the time. And here is the reason why I think the indirect injection engine is better. The direct injection doesn't accumulate so much dirt inside of the engine like the direct injection engine does. I think the best diesel engine ever make was the Toyota Hilux Diesel 1986. This indirect deasil engine run for ever. And while they consume more fuel than the direct one, what you spent in fuel you save in mechanical work. Too much dirt inside of the direct injection engine. As for my Trooper, I have seen some of these with 500,000 mile and more in Indonesia where there is a Trooper Club. There are not fast, but they are, super, super reliable.

Some places you do need anti gel for diesels. Around the south they usually ever get cold enough. But they have warming pads for the oil pan and battery. And you plug them in for overnight trickle charge. Engines are still cold. You need to let both engines warm up some. It’s hard on them I feel until the thermostat has moved let them warm up before jumping on the highway or interstate for travel or work. If you do don’t harf in it baby it. All the fluids are at the nights temp and don’t lube as well until it’s warmed. Engine oil is thicker. That is why manufacturers recommended 10/30 ten is 110 degrees and and the 30 is minus thirty degrees winter degrees the oil is still able to flow and lubricate your engine properly. If you have an old freezer go stick a quart and freeze it and pour it out after over night. Then pour up a bunch heat it up to 110 see what it does at 110 degrees is still lubricating?

Except he failed to explain that using a vehicle in hot deserts requires diurnal observance in that driving at night requires a winter grade oil and driving in the day rquires higher viscosity.

I typically see a 10% increase in mpg with premium fuel over midgrade. I often wondered if it's because the gas stations I tend to use have more additives or maybe have a lower ethanol content in their premium grade. I can also say that I get a large mpg increase if I use a mid-grade ethanol-free fuel, as much as 25%. I wish ethanol-free pumps were more prevalent. Corn-based ethanol isn't environmentally friendly anyway.

Still wake up screaming sometimes because of the issues with Diesel injectors getting loose (at 125 GBP a pop to reseat) on my prior Jeep Grand Cherokee. Apparently a typical Mercedes engine design flaw that only keeps it in place with 1 bolt on one side of the injector (contrary to e.g. BMW Diesels that I'm told keep the injectors in place with 2 bolts, 1 on each side). Also due to the partially unseated injectors air was being drawn into the cylinder, cause big black clouds of smoke behind the car, especially during acceleration.

Nice video. Here in Norway, we have 95 octane and 98 octane RON gasoline. I buy 98 octane for my cars because 95 octane contains ethanol (E10 - 10 %). Ethanol contains less energy than gasoline, meaning ten percent of the gasoline is less powerful. So the energy of 95 is in fact lower than 98 per liter or gallon. Further, the ethanol is hygroscopic, binding water from the atmosphere. Also, older cars have fuel lines made of a rubber that gets brittle from ethanol.

When I went on extended trips in my Corvettes, I'd use GOOD quality regular. The lack of 'need for speed' fuel caused NO change in cruising effort (under FAST at least). It was stressless savings. Tooling about town, I used high octane and it was fine and I never noticed any 'overhang' upon switching fuel.
